experience, whether at the track or watching the live stream or on broadcast TV through SBS.
We extend a warm welcome to all, spectators, riders, race teams and industry supporters. Who’s ready for racing???
We know our sport is one of the most spectacular, challenging and extreme sports out there today and we want it to grow for the benefit of teams, riders and spectators alike.
We are looking forward to a great year of racing ahead, as we know you all are, off the back of last year. It’s still going to be a challenge getting the series away in ’21 but with Motorcycling Australia’s organisation and the support of the race teams and industry we think ’21 will be better than ever. When we were first approached by MA to get involved this year, we jumped at the chance to support the series. For AMX, we’ve always lived and breathed MX. From our beginnings in 2008 selling clearance MX gear out of a shed in Bayswater, Victoria, to today with stores across 4 states and an ever-growing team, MX is in our blood. The sport provides the opportunity for everyone to enjoy MX, from spectators to riders to industry sponsors like us, we just love getting involved and having some fun. We also see our support of the ’21 ProMX as a small contribution to ensure MX racing gets back to what it should be, a well-managed sport viewed by as many spectators as possible who have a quality
We’ll be at all rounds, so come and talk to our team about anything MX. We enjoy getting along to these events, it’s what being involved in this industry is all about and we’re privileged to be here to support racing and just talk bikes for a weekend! And by the way, if you pass by our trade stand you can pick yourself up some goodies at special ProMX pricing as well. We’ll also have team bikes at selected rounds and our Project 125 race bike build that we’re giving away at the end of the series! So plenty to entertain you between races there. From team AMX to you, we hope you enjoy the season ’21 Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores, now let’s go racing! Rob Farrimond Business Manager AMX Superstores

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS WHAT IS MX1? The Thor MX1 class is the elite category in the ProMX Championship and fields factory backed teams from all major Japanese and European OEM manufacturers. Riders compete mainly on state of the art 450cc four stroke machines (and some privately entered 255cc and over two stroke machines.)
The current superstars of the Thor MX1 class include three time champion Dean Ferris, former MXGP and AMA competitor and your 2019 Champion Todd Waters, Australian icon Brett Metcalfe who returned to the series in 2016 following over a decade competing on the international circuit, just to name a few.
If you have made it to the Thor MX1 you are simply competing with the best riders in the nation, along with many international riders who will compete in one off rounds or entire championships, further boosting the depth and star power in Thor MX1.
Thor MX1 has the most talent, the best funded team programs and the fastest bikes in an on track display of raw speed and intensity that is sure to excite casual fans and industry members alike!
WHAT IS MX2? The Pirelli MX2 class is the official transition into the professional classes in the ProMX Championship and allows riders at 15 years old to compete on 122cc to 150cc 2-Stroke & 200cc to 250cc 4-Stroke machines. Although the smaller bore class to Thor MX1, the Pirelli MX2 category often provides the most exhilarating racing of the series with young professional riders making their
debut eager to impress the manufacturers and forge their futures in the sport. Recent graduates of this class that have gone on to have international success in 2020 in the MXGP series are former Pirelli MX2 champions Jed Beaton and Wilson Todd, along with Nathan Crawford and Bailey Malkiewicz also debuting on the international stage.
WHAT IS MX3? The Maxxis MX3 class provides a safe and competitive environment for juniors to graduate into the senior ranks at a National level. The class age structure is for riders from 14 to under 18 to compete on 122cc to 150cc 2-Stroke & 200cc to 250cc 4-Stroke capacity machines. The new MX3 class structure also allows unique opportunities for riders with exceptional talent and speed to then graduate early into the Pirelli MX2 category at 15, to be more in line with FIM international age groupings.
Formerly known as “MXD”, this development class in fundamentally a way for both privateer racers and manufacturer backed team riders to enter the ProMX series and learn the style of racing, schedules and track conditions of the professional racing circuit. The goal of the Maxxis MX3 class is to prepare riders for a successful transition and career into the Pirelli MX2 and Thor MX1 pro classes, or for an accelerated departure via Pirelli MX2 to the international stage.
17
MX1 CLASS The Thor MX1 class has earned a reputation as being one of the premier domestic championships in the world. Over the years the class has attracted not only Australia’s best, but international stars from Europe and America and has seen many great Champions and contenders go on to launch international careers overseas. Flashing back to the most recent championship battle in 2019, it was Todd Waters vs Luke Clout and the inclusion of Hayden Mellross prior to an ACL injury removing him from the championship battle with a few rounds remaining. The final rounds of the season at Coolum decided who would take the #1 plate and Waters was simply too strong in the sand, defeating Clout over the weekend taking the title. Many Championship runs have led to the final rounds and even last motos in the Thor MX1 class and you will see this as a pattern throughout the brief history outlined in this article. In 2016 the class saw the return of Dean Ferris and Todd Waters from their multi-year MXGP campaigns. It was the perfect storm where career rivals Ferris and Waters would square off against 2015 champion Kirk Gibbs. In one of the most hotly contested series in history, the trio battled it out trading round wins, red plates and leaving it all on the table until the final gate drop of the season at Coolum. If that wasn’t enough, the trio ran in the top three spots from the gate drop of the final moto and in a dramatic moto win and finish, Dean Ferris would win the title by six points over Kirk Gibbs and Todd Waters.
Kirk Gibbs If 2016 was one of the closest battles in Thor MX1 history, then 2017 would be compared as the complete opposite. This was the era of Dean Ferris, who after winning in 2016, would go on to win every overall in the championship except for one round in a dominating run to the #1 plate. Kirk Gibbs would place second and Todd Waters third. In 2018, the Ferris domination era continued, with Ferris winning every round of the series. After winning the last 7 motos of 2017, Ferris went on to win the first 9 motos of 2018. (16 motos straight without losing.) His worst finish of 2018 was second place and he finished the year with 14 moto wins and six second place finishes. Mitch Evans would finish second in the championship in his rookie year, resulting in his departure for the beginning of his MXGP career, where he is now a teammate to current MX1 World Champion Tim Gasjey on HRC Honda.
Jay Marmont 18
MX1 CLASS Prior to the Ferris era, in 2015, Kirk Gibbs beat Adam Monea for the title, with Luke Styke (fresh back from his MXGP campaign) , Lawson bopping and Daniel Reardon finishing fourth and fifth respectively. 2014 saw Matt Moss close out the second of his back to back titles, the first of which came in 2013 where Moss beat out Todd Waters and Scottish rider Billy Mackenzie for the title. Although Moss did not match Ferris’ three time repeat, he was arguably as dominant over his two year tenure as Thor MX1 champion. The 2012 season saw New Zealander Josh Coppins and Todd Waters stand head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Coppins would ultimately win the title by 11 points over Waters, with a huge margin of 100 points back to New Zealander Cody Cooper and Englishman Brad Anderson, who would tie on points, with Cooper claiming third overall on countback.
Todd Waters There is only one dynasty that could challenge the dominance of Dean Ferris’ three consecutive championships and that came in the form of Jay Marmont. In 2011. Jay Marmont would won his incredible fourth straight MX1 title after championship #1 plates in 2008, 2009 and 2010 along with 2011. The 2011 crown was perhaps his most hard fought, with Marmont not taking an overall round win until round six of the series. Josh Coppins and Billy Mackenzie taking second and third respectively.

MX2 CLASS The Pirelli MX2 class has a long established history as a proving ground for many great Champions of the sport both domestically and for those who have gone on to international success. The list of past champions of the class shows how important the Pirelli MX2 Championship can be to the future of a riders career. For riders with international aspirations for either MXGP or AMA Motocross and Supercross, a Pirelli MX2 Class championship (or being a championship contender) is a minimum requisite that many teams will require before signing a rider to an international team and championship. Most recently past champions and title contenders such as Jed Beaton, Luke Clout and Mitch Evans have gone onto international success and factory rides upon graduating from the MX2 class.
The 2016 MX2 Class was stacked full of young talent, but Jed Beaton came away with the Championship over Caleb Ward by 13 Points. Beaton then moved to Europe in 2017 to compete in the EMX250 Class and select rounds of the MX2 World Championship, where he scored his first podium with fellow Australian Hunter Lawerence (AMA Supercross WInner) at the MXGP of Pays de Montbeliard in France.
The Pirelli MX2 class title is currently vacant and up for grabs. Due to defending back to back Champion Wilson Todd racing in the MXGP series. Todd took the first of his two MX2 titles in 2018 after battling early with team mate Nathan Crawford. Crawford wouldn’t finish the season after an injury at round 4. New Zealand’s Hamish Harwood would step up and fight with Todd for the remainder of the season, but it wasn’t enough as Wilson would go on and win the championship in pretty convincing fashion. Todd isn’t the only two time MX2 champion, the 2011 season saw a young Matt Moss take his JDR Motorex KTM to the top of the table and claim his second MX2 Championship. Moss took his first MX2 title years prior in 2009. Moss edged out future MX1 Champion Kirk Gibbs by 10 points, followed by american Phil Nicoletti. The 2012 season was stacked with big names, such as 3 time E1 AORC defending champion Luke Styke, Josh Cachia, Kirk Gibbs and Cheyne Boyd, but it was Honda’s Ford Dale who would come away with his only professional championship win. Styke improved on his 2nd place finish in 2012 to take the title in 2013 over class newcomer Kale Makeham. This was preceded by an early season battle with Luke Clout. Behind Styke and Makeham, would see Brock Winston, Ryan Marmont and Dylan Long round out the top five. Luke Clout has challenged in the MX1 class as well as the West Coast 250 class in the AMA Supercross championship in recent years, but in 2014 he rode his way to the MX2 title here in Australia. 2015 showed a big changing of the guard in the class, as Clout would have to settle for 2nd in the championship to Jay Wilson. However the bigger news were the names coming up through the ranks. Japan’s Takeshi Katsuya finished third, but it was youngsters Jed Beaton, Caleb Ward and Nathan Crawford who finished 4th, 5th and 6th who showed where the class was heading in the coming years.
Matt Moss Mitch Evans finished 3rd in the 2017 MX2 Championship behind Egan Mastin and Wilson Todd after a hotly contested season. Mastin stepped away from racing after the 2018 season and Todd would go on to win the first of his back to back MX2 titles. Evans moved into the MX1 class in 2018, then in 2019 moved to the Honda team to compete in the MX2 World Championship. Evans will once again race the MXGP class for HRC Honda in 2021.
After over a year without racing, 2021 is heating up to a tightly contested championship in the MX2 class with contenders such as past champions Jay Wilson on his GYTR Yamaha, and past title contenders such as Serco Yamaha’s Nathan Crawford. Mix in the young talent of Honda Racings Kyle Webster, Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson to name a few and it is clear to see that the Pirelli MX2 class is anyones for the taking when the gate drops at Wonthaggi for round one on April 11th.

MX3 CLASS The Maxxis MX3 class holds a special place in the ProMX series and the industry itself. As the graduating class from the junior ranks, the class sees a permanent rotating roster of graduating talent, where Australian Junior Motocross Champions and contenders face off against second year veterans of the class, all chasing their racing dreams of a Maxxis MX3 Championship and professional racing contract in the Pirelli MX2 class.
Wilson Todd laid the foundations to be a two time MX2 class Champion in the 2015 season, finishing on the podium 16 out of 19 motos including 7 moto wins. Jayden Rykers took second and Connor Tierney third.
Formerly known as “MXD”, this development class is now fundamentally a way for both privateer racers and manufacturer backed team riders to enter the ProMX series and learn the style of racing, schedules and track conditions of the professional racing circuit. The class age structure has been modified to riders from 14 to under 18 to be able to compete on 122cc to 150cc 2-Stroke & 200cc to 250cc 4-Stroke capacity machines. The new MX3 class structure also allows unique opportunities for riders with exceptional talent and speed to then graduate early into the Pirelli MX2 category at 15, to be more in line with FIM international age groupings. In the latest running of the series in 2019 it was a two man battle for the title as Regan Duffy would square off against wild New Zealander Maximus Purvis. Purvis would provide nothing short of incredible speed and excitement every time he was on track, however down the stretch Duffy was too strong and stayed calm to win his first championship as a senior rider. Perhaps a strong indicator of the raw speed of this class is the fact that Regan Duffy was selected as the MX3 open class representative for Australia at the Motocross of Nations that same year. An incredibly strong showing from Duffy at this event has led to a pathway to the MXGP series whenever the youngster is ready. In 2018 it was a WBR Yamaha dominating year as Bailey Malkiewicz and Hugh Mckay from Tasmania would finish first and second in the championship respectively. Malkiewicz would also win the Junior World Motocross Championship in the same year that would eventually lead to a MXGP campaign in 2020 in the MX2 class. 2017 saw Victorian Cody Dyce battle hard against Jy Roberts. Perhaps the most iconic moment of this battle came at Murray Bridge where Roberts and Dyce clashed battling for the lead, with Dyce coming off second best and being ejected from his bike and the track. Ultimately this battle was over prematurely when Roberts was injured in practice at the final round, handing Dyce the title in what would have been a massive battle to the series title over the last two gate drops.
Wilson Todd One of the most stacked graduating classes of talent came in the 2014 season. Egan Mastin, Nathan Crawford and Jack Simpson would all trade wins on their way to swapping red plates at the beginning of the season. Mastin and Crawford would also pull wild card rounds in MX2 and Crawford even landed on the podium in the MX2 class, illustrating how fast these young riders were going in 2014. Egan Mastin would win the title over Crawford, Simpson would finish third ahead of Wilson Todd, Jayden Rykers, Jed Beaton, Aaron Tanti and Kyle Webster. This was one fast group of riders graduating from juniors and destined for professional success. In 2013 New Zealander Hamish Harwood would claim the MX3 crown from Jay WIlson and Jack SImpson. 2012 saw another New Zealander Kayne Lamont win the title over Dylan Long and Tasmanian Dylan Leary. Jay Wilson would finish fourth ahead of Kale Makeham.
The 2016 Championship was clinched by Mitch Evans over Western Australia’s Connor Tierney, Cooper Pozniak and Tasmanian Wade Kirkland. 27 points separated the top 4 in the championship in this closely contested series.

After a pretty tricky 2020 we are certainly happy to be back trackside this year and supporting the inaugural Penrite ProMX Championship, in partnership with Motorcycling Australia and of course the wider bike community.
While we have always endeavoured to support all demographics of motorsport and we have various higher end sponsorships arrangements through our Supercars, ASBK, jet boats programs as well as our factory motorcycle partnerships of previous years, we have always remained true to the privateers and the community support that underpins the motorcycling scene.
AUSTRALIAN
With an Australian family-owned business that spans nearly 100 years we have a huge wealth of experience in the Australian racing scene, our products have greatly developed over the years and have benefitted from decades of not just laboratory analysis but real world testing with our many brand ambassadors and community based partners right across Australia and New Zealand. Over the past decade especially we have heavily invested in ensuring we are delivering the best products suited for local conditions. This has led to the extensive Penrite motorcycle range that covers both 2 stroke and 4 stroke applications, road and race offerings, classic bike oils as well as maintenance and performance products.
