CLASS DESCRIPTIONS WHAT IS THOR MX1? The THOR MX1 class is the elite category in the ProMX Championship and sees factory-backed teams fielded by all major Japanese and European OEM manufacturers. Riders compete mainly on state of the art 450cc four stroke machines (and some privately entered 255cc and over two stroke machines.) If you have made it to the THOR MX1, you are simply competing with the best riders in the nation- alongside many international riders who may compete in one off rounds or entire championships, further boosting the depth and star power in THOR MX1.
The current superstars of the THOR MX1 class includes reigning 2021 THOR MX1 Champion Luke Clout, the return of former three time champion Dean Ferris, former MXGP and AMA competitor and your 2019 Champion Todd Waters, Pirelli MX2 Champion Kyle Webster who debuts in the THOR MX1 class for 2022 along with Australian Motocross legend Brett Metcalfe, young guns Aaron Tant and Hayden Mellrossi, former 2015 Champion Kirk Gibbs and a whole lot more! THOR MX1 has the most talent, the best funded team programs and the fastest bikes in anon track in a display of raw speed and intensity that is sure to excite casual fans and industry members alike!
WHAT IS PIRELLI MX2? The Pirelli MX2 class is the official transition into the professional classes in the ProMX Championship and allows riders at 15 years old to compete on 122cc to 150cc 2-Stroke & 200cc to 250cc 4-Stroke machines. Although the smaller bore class to THOR MX1, the Pirelli MX2 category often provides the most exhilarating racing of the series with young professional riders making their
debut- and eager to impress the manufacturers and to forge their futures in the sport. Former class Champion Wilson Todd returns to the class and domestic racing after his MXGP international run and will square off against old rivals Nathan Crawford, Jesse Dobson and Maxxis MX3 graduating Champion Blake Fox.
WHAT IS MAXXIS MX3? The Maxxis MX3 class provides a safe and competitive environment for juniors to graduate into the senior ranks at a National level. The class age structure is for riders from 14 to under 18 to compete on 122cc to 150cc 2-Stroke & 200cc to 250cc 4-Stroke capacity machines. The new MX3 class structure also allows unique opportunities for riders with exceptional talent and speed to then graduate early into the Pirelli MX2 category at 15, to be more in line with FIM international age groupings.
Formerly known as “MXD”, this development class is fundamentally a way for both privateer racers and manufacturer backed team riders to enter the ProMX series and learn the style of racing, schedules and track conditions of the professional racing circuit. The goal of the Maxxis MX3 class is to prepare riders for a successful transition and career into the Pirelli MX2 and THOR MX1 pro classes, or for an accelerated.
WHAT IS EZILIFT MXW? EZILIFT MXW is the official Women’s Senior National Motocross competition class in Australia. Open to riders sixteen years of age and over competing in an open class structure on 125cc machines and up, the MXW class has seen many great champions emerge over recent years and go on to international success with the likes of Meghan Rutledge, Maddy Brown and Jess Moore all enjoying long standing careers in the EZILIFT MXW class.
The 2022 Pro MX Championship Women’s division will be hotly contested this year, with 16-year-old female motocross sensation, Charli Cannon joining Rhys Budd and Alex Larwood on the Yamalube Yamaha Racing Team and contest the Women’s division during the 2022 Pro MX Championship. The three round championship scheduled for Wonthaggi, Gilman and Coolum throughout the year.

2022 SEASON SO FAR ... Season 2022 of the Penrite ProMX Championship, presented by AMX Superstores (ProMX) has thrown up some interesting and difficult scenarios. With 2021 THOR MX1 champion Luke Clout (CDR Yamaha) out for the season, it appeared that Honda’s Kyle Webster was in the box seat, only to have him out injured after a training accident post round two. To look forward, let’s first look back on the season to date…
ROUND ONE - WONTHAGGI, VICTORIA
Webster would mount an inedible charge through the field to close up to the rear of race leader Clout, but with two laps to go, Webster would push the front wheel in a turn leaving Luke clout clear to take the moto win ahead of Kyle Webster in 2nd, Arron Tanti in 3rd, Todd Waters 4th and Brett Metcalfe in 5th. Moto 2 would again see blistering pace from Kyle Webster throughout the opening laps, as Arron Tanti ran 2nd followed by a fierce battle of Metcalfe, Factory KTM’s Kirk Gibbs and Todd Waters rounding out the top 5 spots.
THOR MX1 A huge crowd of 5000 spectators lined the fences to witness the incredible THOR MX1 class action at the sandy Wonthaggi track in Victoria, for the opening round of the Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores. The highly anticipated debut of Team HRC Honda Racing’s Kyle Webster did not disappoint, as Webster would set a blistering time in THOR MX1 qualifying, backing that up with setting the fastest time in the AMX Superstores Top 10 Pole Shootout. With pole position, Webster would holeshot moto one and lead early, before going down and handing the lead to the defending champion, Luke Clout on his CDR Yamaha Monster Energy machine. CDR teammate Aaron Tanti would move to 2nd, with Todd Waters in 3rd aboard the Husqvarna Australia FC450.

As the race progressed, Clout would charge from outside the top 5 through to 2nd and take advantage of a late race crash by Kyle Webster to take maximum points from Round 1 with the second moto win. Tanti would finish 2nd, Waters
2022 SEASON SO FAR ... In MX2 moto 1, it was Team HRC Honda Racing’s Wilson Todd who would find his way to the lead after early race leader, Gas Gas mounted Noah Ferguson would crash out of proceedings early. Todd would extend a small lead early, only to be challenged for the entire moto by Yamalube Yamaha Racing’s Alex Larwood. Larwood would match the pace of Todd but remain several bike lengths behind throughout the moto, as the pair would finish 1st and 2nd at the flag. Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson rode a constant moto to finish 3rd, with his team mate Bailey Malkiewic in 4th and Haruki Yokohama rounding out the top 5 on his Empire Kawasaki. 3rd, with Kirk Gibbs in 4th and Kyle Webster remounting to finish 5th. Pirelli MX2 The Pirelli MX2 Class had seen much pre-season hype and speculation over who would lead the charge in the 2022 Penrite ProMx Championship (ProMX) presented by AMX Superstores. The riders did not take long to show this was hype justified with incredible on track action in front of a sold out crowd and perfect racing conditions at the sandy Wonthaggi track.
Moto 2 was a familiar affair, with Wilson Todd leading from the early stages and Alex Larwood charging from a poor start to close in and match the lap times of the leader in second, trailing the previous MX2 champion for multiple laps around the sandy Wonthaggi track. Late in the moto, Todd was too strong and would take the chequered flag, ahead of Larwood in 2nd and Bailey Malkiewicz in 3rd, Jesse Dobson 4th and Ryder Kingsford 5th. 2022 SEASON SO FAR ... Maxxis MX3 An incredible 80 Maxxis MX3 riders entered for the opening round of the 2022 Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores. With two groups of qualifying, the riders were trimmed to an elite gate of 40 ready to do battle on the fast and sandy Wonthaggi track in Victoria. With tremendous weather throughout the weekend and a large crowd lining the fences, it was Ride Red Honda’s Cambell Williams who would dominate proceedings with 1-1 Moto scores on his way to taking out the opening round overall.
ROUND TWO – GUM VALLEY (MACKAY), QUEENSLAND THOR MX1 A spectacular Mackay Gum Valley track presented riders, teams and a huge crowd attendance from the region with an incredible location for Round 2 of the Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores (ProMX)
Moto 1 would see Williams lead from the front, as Gas Gas Australia mounted Byron Dennis would finish 2nd with WA young gun and KTM Australia mounted Kayden Minear in 3rd.
In THOR MX1, it did not take long for the hype and anticipation that followed Round 1 of the Championship, to ignite onto the Gum Valley race track. In what can only be described as a frantic opening moto, it would be Factory Honda Racing Australia’s Dean Ferris who would lead the pack from the gate drop, only to fall before the conclusion of lap 1.
Moto 2 again saw Williams dominate from the front, as Brock Flynn would charge through the pack to 2nd on his Husqvarna Australia ride. Jack Mather would round out the top 3 in the second Maxxis MX3 class moto. The overall podium for Wonthaggi from Maxxis MX3 •

CDR Yamaha Monster Energy and THOR MX1 Red Plate Holder Luke Clout would assume the lead position, where it appeared to be business as usual as Clout began to put together solid laps at the front of the field. However things would soon take a drastic turn for Clout, as a dramatic crash on the backside of the race track would see the defending Champion post a DNF and end his day at Mackay after a trip to the RaceSafe medical unit and subsequently being transported to local Hospital by Ambulance for further evaluation. It would be Aaron Tanti on the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy YZ450f who would inherit the lead position from team mate Clout’s misfortune. Tanti sprinted at the front of the field but would eventually succumb to the charge of class Rookie Kyle Webster on the Factory Honda Racing

from Gibbs opened the door for Webster to move into 3rd.
At the chequered flag for Moto 1, it would be Webster taking the win from Tanti in 2nd, whilst a freight train of veteran experience battled for the final podium spot. Todd Waters finished in 3rd on the Husqvarna Racing Australia machine, fending off charges from both GO24 KTM’s Brett Metcalfe who would finish 4th and Dean Ferris who claimed 5th position.
As the moto continued, it was Dean Ferris who used the 25 minutes plus one lap moto to return to race winning form after just his fourth gate drop back from retirement. Ferris was simply too strong maintaining track position and his trademark strong riding style to take the moto win, ahead of team mate Webster in 2nd. A late moto charge from KTM Racing Australia’s Kirk Gibbs moved him past Tanti into 3rd, as Todd Waters and Brett Metcalfe would also shuffle Tanti back in the final lap, with Waters claiming 4th and Brett Metcalfe a close 5th position. In Pirelli MX2, Honda Racing Australia’s and class Red Plate holder Wilson Todd would pick up where he left off at Wonthaggi, executing a perfect holeshot and establishing great track position to spring away from the field in the opening laps. MAXXIS MX3 The next generation of Australian Motocross talent put on a fantastic display of speed and skill in Maxxis MX3. In Moto1, it was KTM mounted Ryan Alexanderson who would execute a holeshot and a perfect race, leading every lap on his way to claiming the chequered flag. KTM Racing Australia’s Kayden Minear would battle with Connor Towill and Maxxis MX3 red plate holder Campbell Williams on his Honda Racing Australia CRF250r to secure 2nd place. Late race falls from Towill and Williams would match with a late charge from Jack Mather who would claim 3rd place at the flag. Moto 2 would see a dominant display from Kayden Minear, who would maintain a small margin over Miles Gilmore at the finish as the pair claimed 1st
In Moto 2, Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson would rebound after a fall in moto 1 to holeshot and lead early. Waters would pass Ferris temporarily 8 minutes in, however Ferris would return the favour in exactly the same spot 5 minutes later. Ferris would lead the trio of Australian Motocross legends to the chequered flag in an epic last lap battle, with Todd Waters in 2nd, Brett Metcalfe in 3rd, GAS GAS Australia’s Hayden Mellross 4th and a hard charging Aaron Tanti in 5th.
In THOR MX1, it was time for the challengers to assert dominance over the field. Following the unprecedented turn of events that saw both Round 1 Red Plate holder, CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Luke Clout and Round 2 Red Plate holder, HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Kyle Webster, both exit the Championship with injuries within the same week, the Championship was now thrown wide open. CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Aaron Tanti would answer the call first thing, setting the fastest time in the THOR MX1 qualifying session. However it was Kirk Gibbs, riding for the KTM Australia Racing Team that would claim the top spot and set the fastest time in the AMX Superstores Top Ten Pole Shootout. In the opening THOR MX1 moto, HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Dean Ferris would assert himself early on lap 1 to the front of the field. The first lap would also see Kirk Gibbs crash out of contention with Aaron Tanti colliding with the downed KTM rider’s bike, leaving both riders on the floor and at the back of the pack. Husqvarna Racing Australia’s Todd Waters latched onto the back of Ferris and the pair ran in their all too familiar 1st and 2nd positions that we have seen so many times before. To make things even more interesting, GO24 KTM’s Brett Metcalfe joined the veteran freight train out front, the trio sprinting away from the rest of the
For the first time in the 2022 ProMX Championship, the back to back motos factored into race day proceedings for THOR MX1 in the afternoon. In back to back part 1, Ferris would execute the holeshot with Metcalfe in 2nd, Tanti in 3rd and Gibbs in 4th. The short moto format would see the riders stay in this formation until late in the moto when Metcalfe would cross rut and crash following the first turn area, leaving the door open for Tanti and Gibbs to move forward.

2022 SEASON SO FAR ... At the chequered flag it was Ferris taking the win from Tanti in 2nd and Gibbs in 3rd. Todd Waters put on an incredible charge from a first turn crash all the way back to 5th in the short back to back moto format. In the 2nd back to back moto, it was again Ferris who executed a perfect holeshot. Aaron Tanti pushed his way to the lead spot for the majority of the moto, however down the stretch Ferris was too strong, passing Tanti back with a few minutes to go. At the chequered flag it was Ferris claiming a perfect day with another 1st, with Tanti in 2nd, Waters in 3rd, Metcalfe 4th and Mellross 5th.
Moto 2 was more of a familiar affair, with Todd holeshotting and after a brief battle with GAS GAS Australia’s Noah Ferguson, beginning his trademark inching away from the field of Pirelli MX2 riders. Malkiewicz and Larwood would battle for 2nd position with Larwood eventually pulling away from his bLU cRU counterpart. At the chequered flag, it was Todd taking 1st with Larwood in 2nd and Malkiewicz in 3rd. Liam Andrews on the Ride Red Honda would place a season best 4th with Ryder Kingsford placing 6th.
Dean Ferris would close up a huge points margin to just 11 points out of the Championship lead with the THOR MX1 overall victory at Wodonga. New Red Plate holder Todd Waters was 2nd overall and Aaron Tanti was 3rd overall, sitting just 1 point out of the Red Plate. THOR MX1 Overall Podium •

PIRELLI MX2 In Pirelli MX2, it appeared to be business as usual after HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Wilson Todd jumped to the front of the field early in lap 1, passing holeshot winner Husqvarna Australia’s Dylan Wills. However on lap 3, Todd would uncharacteristically crash out of the lead, passing the number 1 spot to Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson. A procession of Yamaha’s battled for the podium placings throughout the moto with Yamalube Yamaha’s Rhys Budd, Serco Yamaha’s Bailey Malkiewicz and WBR Bulk Nutrients Yamaha’s Ryder Kingsford all in tow. At the end of moto 1, it was Malkiewicz who emerged victorious, ahead of Ryder Kingsford and Rhys Budd. Wilson Todd would charge from 14th back to 4th and Jesse Dobson would crash out sustaining a dislocated shoulder at the mid point of the race.

Moto 1 saw new Factory Yamaha signing and Yamalube team rider Charli Cannon take the holeshot and stretch a lead from the front. MX1 CLASS The THOR MX1 class has earned a reputation as being one of the premier domestic championships in the world. Over the years the class has attracted not only Australia’s best, but international stars from Europe and America and has seen many great Champions and contenders go on to launch international careers overseas. The last two years have been interrupted seasons with events cancelled and seasons severely curtailed. In 2021, just four motos decided the title with Luke Clout taking the number one spot narrowly over Regan Duffy with Todd Waters also close second- and the title! The full effect of the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020,with no Championship rounds completed. The last full season was in 2019, and it was Todd Waters vs Luke Clout plus Hayden Mellross (prior to an ACL injury removing him from the championship battle with a few rounds remaining!)
AARON TANTI
The final rounds of the season at Coolum decided who would take the #1 plate and Waters was simply too strong in the sand, defeating Clout over the weekend taking the title. Many Championship runs have led to the final rounds and even last motos in the THOR MX1 class and you will see this as a pattern throughout the brief history outlined in this article.

Call it a throwback, call it a tribute, or just call it a classic. This ’04 Limited Edition graphic has not lost an ounce of style. All the vibe of ’04 and all the performance of ’22 in one package.
MX2 CLASS The Pirelli MX2 class has a long established history as a proving ground for many great Champions of the sport both domestically and for those who have gone on to international success. The list of past champions of the class shows how important the Pirelli MX2 Championship can be to the future of a riders career. For riders with international aspirations for either MXGP or AMA Motocross and Supercross, a Pirelli MX2 Class championship (or being a championship contender) is a minimum requisite that many teams will require before signing a rider to an international team and championship. Most recently past champions and title contenders such as Jed Beaton, Luke Clout and Mitch Evans have gone onto international success and factory rides upon graduating from the MX2 class. The Pirelli MX2 class title Honda Factory Racing’s Kyle Webster was crowned the 2021 Pirelli MX2 class Champion in the Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores (ProMX), after a dominant display of riding that saw Webster finish off the #1 position in only one race throughout the season. Behind Webster, the Yamaha duo of Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson would finish 2nd overall in the Championship with Yamalube Yamaha’s Rhys Budd in 3rd.
JESSE DOBSON
With Webster looking ahead towards his transition to 450 machinery, the 2022 crown will be up for grabs.

MX3 CLASS The Maxxis MX3 class holds a special place in the ProMX series - and the industry itself. As the graduating class from the junior ranks, the class sees a permanent rotating roster of graduating talent, where Australian Junior Motocross Champions and contenders face off against second year veterans of the class, all chasing their racing dreams of a Maxxis MX3 Championship and professional racing contract in the Pirelli MX2 class. Formerly known as “MXD”, this development class is now fundamentally a way for both privateer racers and manufacturer backed team riders to enter the ProMX series and learn the style of racing, schedules and track conditions of the professional racing circuit.
In the last full season of the series 2019 it was a two man battle for the title as Regan Duffy would square off against wild New Zealander Maximus Purvis.
Purvis would provide nothing short of incredible speed and excitement every time he was on track, however down the stretch Duffy was too strong and stayed calm to win his first championship as a senior rider. Perhaps a strong indicator of the raw speed of this class is the fact that Regan Duffy was selected as the MX3 open class representative for Australia at the Motocross of Nations that same year.
The class age structure has been modified to riders from 14 to under 18 to be able to compete on 122cc to 150cc 2-Stroke & 200cc to 250cc 4-Stroke capacity machines. The new MX3 class structure also allows unique opportunities for riders with exceptional talent and speed to then graduate early into the Pirelli MX2 category at 15, to be more in line with FIM international age groupings. In 2021, the heavily curtailed season would see Blake Fox take the title after a dominant and consistently brilliant season. Ryder Kingsford did everything he could to stay in touch with the leader, but fell short in what was a heavily reduced season. Kayden Minear was third aboard a KTM. In 2020, no races were run.
In 2018 it was a WBR Yamaha dominating year as Bailey Malkiewicz and Hugh Mckay from Tasmania would finish first and second in the championship respectively. Malkiewicz would also win the Junior World Motocross Championship in the same year that would eventually lead to a MXGP campaign in 2020 in the MX2 class. 2017 saw Victorian Cody Dyce battle hard against Jy Roberts. Perhaps the most iconic moment of this battle came at Murray Bridge where Roberts and Dyce clashed battling for the lead, with Dyce coming off second best and being ejected from his bike and the track. Ultimately this battle was over prematurely when Roberts was injured in practice at the final round, handing Dyce the title in what would have been a massive battle to the series title over the last two gate drops. The 2016 Championship was clinched by Mitch Evans over Western Australia’s Connor Tierney, Cooper Pozniak and Tasmanian Wade.
