2022 SEASON SO FAR ... Season 2022 of the Penrite ProMX Championship, presented by AMX Superstores (ProMX) has thrown up some interesting and difficult scenarios. Through the year, two old rules have shown they still apply: you have to be fast, and you have to stay upright. We’ve seen leading contenders drop out of contention, wise old riders well in the hunt for the title and itis all going to come down to the final few rounds...
Australia FC450.
However, to look forward, let’s first look back on the season to date…
Moto two would again see blistering pace from Kyle Webster throughout the opening laps, as Aaron Tanti ran second followed by a fierce battle between Metcalfe, Factory KTM’s Kirk Gibbs and
ROUND ONE - WONTHAGGI, VICTORIA
Webster would mount an incredible charge through the field to close up to the rear of race leader Clout, but with two laps to go, Webster would push the front wheel in a turn leaving Luke Clout clear to take the moto win ahead of Kyle Webster in second, Arron Tanti in third, Todd Waters fourth and Brett Metcalfe in fifth.
THOR MX1 A huge crowd of 5000 spectators lined the fences to witness the incredible THOR MX1 class action at the sandy Wonthaggi track in Victoria, for the opening round of the Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores. The highly anticipated debut of Team HRC Honda Racing’s Kyle Webster did not disappoint, as Webster would set a blistering time in THOR MX1 qualifying, backing that up with setting the fastest time in the AMX Superstores Top 10 Pole Shootout. With pole position, Webster would holeshot moto one and lead early, before going down and handing the lead to the defending champion Luke Clout on his CDR Yamaha Monster Energy machine. In MX2 Moto one, it was Team HRC Honda Racing’s Wilson Todd who would find his way to the lead after early race leader, Gas Gas mounted Noah Ferguson would crash out of proceedings early. Larwood would match the pace of Todd but remain several bike lengths behind throughout, and the pair would finish first and second at the chequered flag. Pirelli MX2 The Pirelli MX2 Class had seen much pre-season hype and speculation over who would lead the charge in the 2022 Penrite ProMX Championship (ProMX) presented by AMX Superstores. The riders did not take long to show this was hype justified with incredible on-track action in front of a sold-out crowd and perfect racing conditions at the sandy Wonthaggi track.
Moto two was a familiar affair, with Wilson Todd leading from the early stages and Alex Larwood charging from a poor start to close in and match the lap times of the leader in second, trailing the previous MX2 champion for multiple laps around the sandy Wonthaggi track. Late in the moto, Todd was too strong and would take the chequered flag, ahead of Larwood in second and Bailey Malkiewicz in third, Jesse Dobson fourth and Ryder Kingsford fifth. 2022 SEASON SO FAR ... Maxxis MX3
The EZILIFT MXW
An incredible 80 Maxxis MX3 riders entered for the opening round of the 2022 Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores. With two groups of qualifying, the riders were trimmed to a final gate of 40 ready to battle on the fast and sandy Wonthaggi track in Victoria.
The EZILIFT MXW class and women’s national Motocross racing made a spectacular return at Wonthaggi round one to the Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores.
With near-perfect racing weather throughout the weekend and a large crowd lining the fences, it was Ride Red Honda’s Cambell Williams who would dominate proceedings with 1-1 Moto scores on his way to taking out the opening round overall. Moto one would see Williams lead from the front, as Gas Gas Australia mounted Byron Dennis would finish second with WA young gun and KTM Australia mounted Kayden Minear in third. With competitors coming from all over the country to reignite the national women’s elite competition, all eyes were on the stars of the sport to witness the next generation of talent take on the established competitors in the MXW field.
Moto two again saw Williams dominate from the front, while Brock Flynn would charge through the pack to second on his Husqvarna Australia ride. Jack Mather would round out the top three in the second Maxxis MX3 class moto.
Ride Red Honda’s Emma Millesevic took the qualifying pole position in EZILIFT MXW and set the pace early, becoming the one to beat heading into the races during the day. Moto one saw new Factory Yamaha signing and Yamalube team rider Charli Cannon take the holeshot and stretch a lead from the front. First lap chaos ensued behind Cannon with several contenders going down in the first section of the track including Maddy Healey and Ebony Harris. Cannon would take the moto win, ahead of Millesevic in second and Ride Red Honda teammate Maddy Brown in third. Moto two would see Cannon again lead early, however this time Millesevic and Brown would

THOR MX1
CDR Yamaha Monster Energy and THOR MX1 Red Plate Holder Luke Clout would assume the lead position, where it appeared to be business as usual as Clout began to put together solid laps at the front of the field. However, things would soon take a drastic turn for Clout, as a dramatic crash on the backside of the racetrack would see the defending Champion post a DNF and end his day at Mackay (and title hopes) after a trip to the RaceSafe medical unit and from there being transported to a local Hospital by Ambulance for further evaluation.
A spectacular Mackay Gum Valley track presented riders, teams, and a huge crowd attendance from the region with an incredible location for round two of the Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores (ProMX)
It would be Aaron Tanti on the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy YZ450f who would inherit the lead position from teammate Clout’s misfortune. Tanti sprinted at the front of the field but would eventually succumb to the charge of class Rookie Kyle Webster on the Factory Honda Racing machine, securing the lead position with nine minutes to go. In THOR MX1, it did not take long for the hype and anticipation that followed round one of the Championship, to ignite onto the Gum Valley racetrack. At the chequered flag for moto one, it would be Webster taking the win from Tanti in second, whilst a freight train of veteran experience battled for the final podium spot. Todd Waters finished in third on the Husqvarna Racing Australia machine, fending off charges from both GO24 KTM’s Brett Metcalfe who would finish fourth and Dean Ferris who claimed fifth position.

2022 SEASON SO FAR ... Moto two saw multi-time THOR MX1 Champion Dean Ferris take a clear holeshot ahead of Aaron Tanti, Kirk Gibbs, Brett Metcalfe and Kyle Webster as the field battled for track position early. Kyle Webster began his charge to the front, first passing Metcalfe for fourth and then a mistake from Gibbs opened the door for Webster to move into third. As the moto continued, it was Dean Ferris who used the 25 minutes plus one lap moto to return to race winning form after just his fourth gate drop back from retirement. Ferris was simply too strong maintaining track position and his trademark strong riding style to take the moto
charge to attempt to stay with Todd in second position early. A cluster of riders battling for third position early would include WBR Bulk Nutrients Yamaha’s Brodie Connolly, Husqvarna Racing Australia’s Dylan Wills and Gas Gas Australia’s Noah Ferguson. As the laps continued, it would be Yamalube Yamaha’s Alex Larwood who would mount a charge to the front of the field, first passing Wills for third, then teammate Budd for second. At the finish, Todd would take the win, followed by Larwood in second and Rhys Budd in third. Dylan Wills and Noah Ferguson would round out fourth and fifth positions, respectively. In moto two, Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson would rebound after a fall in moto one to holeshot the
win, ahead of teammate Webster in second. PIRELLI MX2 In Pirelli MX2, Honda Racing Australia’s and class Red Plate holder Wilson Todd would pick up where he left off at Wonthaggi, executing a perfect holeshot and establishing great track position to pull away from the field in the opening laps. Yamalube Yamaha’s Rhys Budd would mount a

Wilson Todd assumed the lead position, with Serco Yamaha’s Bailey Malkiewicz securing second position from Dylan Wills and Alex Larwood. Jesse Dobson would rebound to charge through the field, coming back to third by the latter stages of the moto. At the chequered flag, it was Wilson Todd maintaining his perfect streak in Pirelli MX2 with another moto win, with the Serco Yamaha teammates of Bailey Malkiewicz and Jesse Dobson battling on the final laps, with Dobson returning the favour from round one and edging out his team mate to take second position, ahead of Malkiewicz in third.

MAXXIS MX3 The next generation of Australian Motocross talent put on a fantastic display of speed and skill in Maxxis MX3. In Moto one, it was KTM mounted Ryan Alexanderson who would execute a holeshot and a perfect race, leading every lap on his way to claiming the chequered flag. KTM Racing Australia’s Kayden Minear would battle with Connor Towill and Maxxis MX3 red plate holder Cambell Williams on his Honda Racing Australia CRF250r to secure second place. Late race falls from Towill and Williams would match with a late charge from Jack Mather who would claim third place at the flag.
In THOR MX1, Round three felt like the time for the challengers to assert dominance over the field. Following the unprecedented turn of events that saw both round one Red Plate holder, CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Luke Clout and Round 2 Red Plate holder, HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Kyle Webster, both exit the Championship with injuries within the same week, the Championship was now thrown wide open. CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Aaron Tanti would answer the call first thing, setting the fastest time in the THOR MX1 qualifying session. But it would be Kirk Gibbs, riding for the KTM Australia Racing Team, who would claim the top spot and set the fastest time in the AMX Superstores Top Ten Pole Shootout.
Moto two would see a dominant display from Kayden Minear, who would maintain a small margin over Miles Gilmore at the finish as the pair claimed first and second in the moto. Cambell Williams would ride to a consistent third in the moto. MAXXIS MX3 Overall Podium • • •

2022 SEASON SO FAR ... In the opening THOR MX1 moto, HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Dean Ferris would assert himself early on lap one at the front of the field. The first lap would also see Kirk Gibbs crash out of contention with Aaron Tanti colliding with the downed KTM rider’s bike, leaving both riders on the floor and at the back of the pack. Husqvarna Racing Australia’s Todd Waters latched onto the back of Ferris and the pair ran in their all too familiar first and second positions that we have seen so many times before. To make things even more interesting, GO24 KTM’s Brett Metcalfe joined the veteran freight train out front, the trio moving away from the rest of the field. Waters would pass Ferris- albeit temporarily - eight minutes in, but Ferris would return the favour in exactly the same spot just five minutes later. Ferris would then lead the trio of Australian Motocross legends to the chequered flag in an epic last lap battle, with Todd Waters in second, Brett Metcalfe in third, Gas Gas Australia’s Hayden Mellross fourth and a hard charging Aaron Tanti in fifth. For the first time in the 2022 ProMX Championship, the back-to-back motos factored into race day proceedings for THOR MX1 in the afternoon. In back-to-back part one, Ferris would execute the holeshot with Metcalfe in second, Tanti in third and Gibbs in fourth. The short moto format would see the riders stay in this formation until late in the moto when Metcalfe would cross rut and crash following the first turn area, leaving the door open for Tanti and Gibbs to move forward. At the chequered flag it was Ferris taking the win from Tanti in second and Gibbs in third. Todd Waters put on an incredible charge from a first turn crash all the way back to fifth in the short back-to-back moto format. In the second moto, it was again Ferris who executed a perfect holeshot. Aaron Tanti pushed his way to the lead spot for the majority of the moto, however down the stretch Ferris was too strong, passing Tanti back with a few minutes to go. At the chequered flag it was Ferris claiming a perfect day with another first, with Tanti in second, Waters in third, Metcalfe fourth and Mellross fifth.

Dean Ferris would close up a huge points margin to just 11 points out of the Championship lead with the THOR MX1 overall victory at Wodonga. New Red Plate holder Todd Waters was second overall and Aaron Tanti was third overall, sitting just one point behind the Red Plate.

PIRELLI MX2 In Pirelli MX2, it appeared to be business as usual after HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Wilson Todd jumped to the front of the field early in lap one, passing holeshot Husqvarna Australia’s Dylan Wills. However, on lap three, Todd would uncharacteristically crash out of the lead, passing the number one spot to Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson. A procession of Yamaha’s battled for the podium placings throughout the moto with Yamalube Yamaha’s Rhys Budd, Serco Yamaha’s Bailey Malkiewicz and WBR Bulk Nutrients Yamaha’s Ryder Kingsford all in tow. At the end of moto one, it was Malkiewicz who emerged victorious, ahead of Ryder Kingsford and Rhys Budd. Wilson Todd would charge from fourth back to fourth and Jesse Dobson would crash out sustaining a dislocated shoulder at the mid-point of the race.
2022 SEASON SO FAR ... Moto two was more of a familiar affair, with Todd holeshotting and after a brief battle with Gas Gas Australia’s Noah Ferguson, before enacting his trademark plan of inching away from the field of Pirelli MX2 riders. Malkiewicz and Larwood would battle for second position with Larwood eventually gapping his bLU cRU counterpart. In what can only be described as a rider’s dream racetrack, the rain leading into the event combined with the sandy surface to create incredible conditions, allowing close battles and amazing on track action.
THOR MX1 Once again, the THOR MX1 field came into Round four with everything to play for with just one point separating the Red Plate holder of Husqvarna Australia’s Todd Waters and CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Aaron Tanti. Tanti would send a message to the field in the morning after claiming the fastest time in the AMX Superstores Top Ten Pole Shootout.
position out front, Ferris and Metcalfe would run in formation for 15 minutes with Metcalfe mounting attack after attack on Ferris without success. With just six minutes to go, Metcalfe would finally make the pass stick on Ferris and move into second and immediately set sail after leader Aaron Tanti. A lap later Kirk Gibbs made a pass on Ferris into third and joined the battle for the lead. A game of cat and mouse would ensue in the final two laps as Metcalfe would attack Tanti and then Gibbs would try to counter Metcalfe. At the finish line it was Tanti whose flawless ride was rewarded, having not cracked the under relentless pressure to take the win with Metcalfe in second and Gibbs in third. Dean Ferris and Todd Waters rounded out the top five positions. Aaron Tanti took the overall win for the Round with 2-1 Moto scores and the coveted THOR MX1 Red Plate. Brett Metcalfe would match points with Tanti but claim second overall on the count back with Kirk Gibbs in third overall. THOR MX1 Overall Podium •

Pirelli MX2
In the opening THOR MX1 Moto, it was South Australian Motocross legend Brett Metcalfe on the GO24 KTM who took the holeshot to the delight of the hometown fans. Dean Ferris on the HRC Honda Factory Racing machine would quickly mount an attack passing into the lead in turn three of the opening lap. As the field settled into track position, Metcalfe made his intentions to the hometown crowd clear, passing Ferris back for first place. Metcalfe would proceed to shift up another gear and check out from the THOR MX1 field. Ferris would begin to shuffle back through the field, with Tanti moving to second, KTM Australia’s Kirk Gibbs moving to third and setting his sights on Tanti. The cluster of THOR MX1 superstars would stay in this procession with Ferris in fourth and Waters in fifth for the majority of the opening moto. Towards the end, Waters would pass Ferris for fourth as Metcalfe took the win at the chequered flag, with Tanti second and Gibbs in third. Dean Ferris rocketed out of the gate to the holeshot in Moto two before Aaron Tanti would pass for the lead in the opening lap. As Tanti established a strong track

Wilson Todd had a point to prove at Gillman after his first loss of the season at the previous Round in Wodonga and it was evident from the very first time Pirelli MX2 hit the track that he was not there to muck about after taking out the fastest qualifying time in the Pirelli MX2 qualifying session, Todd would then capitalise on great track position in Moto 1 to dominate every lap of the moto en route to the chequered flag and a dominan victory. Behind Todd, Empire Kawasaki’s Haruki Yokoyama would battle up front early after Serco Yamaha’s Bailey Malkiewicz crashed out of the moto at the end of lap one in unfortunate, but spectacular fashion. The Yamalube Yamaha mounted teammates of Alex Larwood and Rhys Budd moved steadily towards the front, with SA local Larwood in second and Budd in third at the finish. Ride Red Honda’s Liam Andrews rode to another impressive performance in fourth position with the WBR Bulk Nutrients Yamaha Rider Ryder Kingsford charging from a bad start back to fifth position. Moto two would see Yokoyama Holeshot and lead on lap one before a freight train of Rhys Budd and Gas Gas Australia’s Noah Ferguson would battle past Yokoyama, as the pair fought hard for the lead position in the opening laps. Wilson Todd mounted a clinical attack on the Pirelli MX2 field, clawing through from a bad start to pass all ahead of him all the way into the lead position at the halfway point. As the race progressed, Todd would
2022 SEASON SO FAR ... demoralise the field by extending a huge lead by the chequered flag. Rhys Budd and Noah Ferguson would continue their epic battle all the way to the finish, with Budd just pinching second position at the flag. Ferguson would finish third, with Ryder Kingsford in fourth and Jesse Dobson on the Serco Yamaha in fifth.
In the overall standings, Minear took the overall win and made up a huge 20 points margin in the Championship to close within just one point of Championship Red Plate holder Cambell Williams.
In the overall standings, Wilson Todd would take maximum points to the overall win with Rhys Budd in second and Ryder Kingsford in third, who would capitalise on a chain issue for Alex Larwood in the closing laps to lock in the final podium overall spot.

Maxxis MX3 In Maxxis MX3, the next generation of Australian Motocross talent again put on a display of speed and youthful intensity on the sandy Gillman track. In Moto one it was Connor Towill on the KTM Newcastle machine who would holeshot and lead the first half of the race, however a small error while passing a lapped rider would allow KTM Australia mounted youngster Kayden Minear to take the lead. At the same time, Maxxis MX3 Red Plate holder Cambell Williams on the HRC Honda Racing Australia would crash while battling with Jack Mather and fall outside the top three. At the chequered flag it would be Minear in first, with Towill rebounding for second and Jack Mather in third.

EziLift MXW The EziLift MXW class returned for the second Round of their season at Gillman to the delight of the South Australian fans. It was Yamalube Yamaha’s Charli Cannon who picked up right where she left off at Wonthaggi for round one, absolutely dominating the field from the very first laps on the track, setting the fastest time in EziLift
MXW qualifying. In Moto one, Cannon would holeshot and begin to pull ground on the field. Ride Red Honda’s Emma Milesevic would try her best to keep Cannon in sight whilst riding well in second. Taylor Thompson rode in third until the very last lap of Moto one, falling from position and handing Ride Red Honda’s Maddy Brown the last podium spot. Moto two would see a repeat with Cannon and Milesevic running first and second to the chequered flag, with Maddy Brown a strong third.
Moto two would again see Minear lead early and establish a strong track position ahead of the rest of the Maxxis MX3 field. The Husqvarna-mounted duo of Jack Mather and Brock Flynn would battle early in for top three spots as Ride Red Honda mounted rider Ty Kean mounted a tremendous charge through to second position by the end of the moto, with Minear taking out a perfect 1-1 day and Jack Mather rounding out third position in the moto.
After just two rounds, it was now apparent that Cannon was and is on her way to the 2022 title, barring disaster. EziLift MXW Overall Podium •

2022 SEASON SO FAR ... ROUND FIVE – MAITLAND NEW SOUTH WALES A passionate crowd welcomed ProMX back to the Maitland track in the Lower Hunter Valley region of NSW. A fast and technical track presented riders with contrasting terrain that encouraged close racing and intense battles throughout the day!
THOR MX1 OThe GO24 KTM mounted veteran, Brett Metcalfe rocketed out of the gate to claim a huge holeshot in the opening THOR MX1 Moto. A furious first lap ensued, with all the major title contenders trading plastic and placings early in the opening turns. At the conclusion of lap one, it was BBR 102 Motorsports rider, Matt Moss, who continued his momentum as the fastest qualifier, taking the lead from Metcalfe. Moss’ lead was short lived, as KTM Australia’s Kirk Gibbs mounted an attack to claim first position on the following lap. Moss was then shuffled back by CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Aaron Tanti for second, and Brett Metcalfe who moved back into third. A freight train of Gibbs, Tanti and Metcalfe proceeded to tick off laps in close proximity until the midway through the first moto, when Red Plate holder Tanti pulled the trigger, passing Gibbs for the lead.
would never be separated by more than a few bike lengths around the Maitland racetrack. With the afternoon sun low in the sky and a hard packed track, passing opportunities and time recovery was in limited supply, and the trio played a game of cat and mouse that stretched all the way to the chequered flag. Tanti played the game best to score a second moto win and take the overall, further stretching his points lead and move into title favouritism. Moss retained second in moto two and overall, in a season-best outcome for the former champion. A frustrated Ferris would settle for third in the Moto, with Todd Waters riding to yet another incredibly consistent day, with fourth in Moto Two and third overall for the day. THOR MX1 Overall Podium •

•

Pirelli MX2 In the opening Pirelli MX2 Moto, it was Husqvarna Australia’s Dylan Wills who took the holeshot, with HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Wilson Todd and Empire Kawasaki’s Haruki Yokoyama following close behind in second and third respectively. Wills set the pace early in the Moto, keeping Red Plate holder Todd a few bike lengths behind throughout the opening ten minutes. Elsewhere, the Serco Yamaha duo of Bailey Malkiewicz and Jesse Dobson battled for fifth, with Dobson catching fire and moving through the field, first passing Yokoyama for third and then capitalising on the misfortune of Wills, who fell while fending off the attacks from Todd for the lead midway through Moto One.
As Tanti began to ride away and establish a strong track position, Moss regrouped to pass Metcalfe for third and then Gibbs for second. Gibbs fell late in the moto coming out of the split section, and in doing so dropped from podium contention. At the chequered flag, it was Tanti first, Moss second, Metcalfe third, Todd Waters on the Husqvarna Australia in fourth and Kirk Gibbs in fifth. HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Dean Ferris had a point to prove in Moto Two after a mechanical issue saw him fade back to seventh in Moto One. Ferris took a massive holeshot at the gate drop of Moto Two, but it was short-lived as Metcalfe made the pass for the lead on the opening lap. Tanti was next to mount an audacious attack one lap later, passing both Ferris and Metcalfe to move into first with Moss close in tow. From here, the trio of Tanti, Moss and Ferris

Down the stretch, Todd was too strong and would maintain solid track position and a modest lead over Dobson in second to take the win, with Yokoyama claiming third after Wills and Gas Gas Australia’s Noah Ferguson came together before the final lap. Malkiewicz and Noah Ferguson rounded out the top five in Moto One. In what has become all too familiar, Todd executed a perfect holeshot and maintained lead track position through the opening turns. Behind Todd, a second turn pile up held up many of the heavy hitters in the class such as Yamalube Yamaha’s Rhys Budd, Gas Gas Australia’s Blake Fox
2022 SEASON SO FAR ... and Yokoyama. This cleared room for Husqvarna mounted Kaleb Barham and Yamaha mounted Jayce Cosford to battle for podium positions. As Wills exited from podium contention with a mechanical issue, it was Jesse Dobson who mounted an incredible charge through to second with Empire Kawasaki’s Jai Constantinou riding to a season best third place. As Todd took the chequered flag in dominant fashion, Noah Ferguson retained fifth in Moto Two and onto the overall podium in third, with Dobson second and Todd first. Pirelli MX2 Overall Podium •

Maxxis MX3 In Maxxis MX3, the next generation of Australian It was a resurgent MX3 Red Plate holder Cambell Williams on the HRC Honda Racing Australia machine who took the holeshot in Moto One, however, it was short lived as hometown favourite Connor Towill on the KTM Newcastle machine, rocketed past Williams during lap one, never looking back. From there, Towill extended an eight second lead by the halfway point and manage the race from the front.
As the battle for second heated up, Williams was quickly shuffled to sixth, feeling the effects of some lingering injuries. KTM Australia’s Kayden Minear began his charge to the front from ninth position early in the Moto, while the Husqvarna Australia duo of Jack Mather and Brock Flynn battled for the podium alongside Ride Red Honda’s Ty Kean. Towill lived up to the hometown favourite status taking a dominant Moto win, with Ty Kean taking a strong second place and Minear making multiple passes late in the Moto to secure third position at the chequered flag. Moto Two saw a repeat start from Williams who launched out of the gate to the holeshot, but ultimately his race ended one turn later with what appeared to be a mechanical issue. From there, Towill led, as Minear manhandled his KTM Australia machine after losing both feet from the footpegs in the first jump section, somehow managing to remount without crashing.
It was Towill’s Moto to lead- and win- until just before the halfway mark, where a fall in the back split section promoted Jack Mather to the lead, with Yamaha Junior Racing’s Seth Burchell in second and Kean in third. As the Moto progressed, Kean manoeuvred his way through to first and never looked back, taking the win ahead of Burchell in second, Mather in third, and KTM duo of Towill and Minear battling furiously over fourth position to the chequered flag, with Towill just edging Minear at the finish. MX1 CLASS The THOR MX1 class has earned a reputation as being one of the premier domestic championships in the world. Over the years the class has attracted not only Australia’s best, but international stars from Europe and America and has seen many great Champions and contenders go on to launch international careers overseas. The last two years have been interrupted seasons with events cancelled and seasons severely curtailed. In 2021, just four motos decided the title with Luke Clout taking the number one spot narrowly over Regan Duffy with Todd Waters also close second- and the title! The full effect of the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020,with no Championship rounds completed. The last full season was in 2019, and it was Todd Waters vs Luke Clout plus Hayden Mellross (prior to an ACL injury removing him from the championship battle with a few rounds remaining!)
AARON TANTI
The final rounds of the season at Coolum decided who would take the #1 plate and Waters was simply too strong in the sand, defeating Clout over the weekend taking the title. Many Championship runs have led to the final rounds and even last motos in the THOR MX1 class and you will see this as a pattern throughout the brief history outlined in this article.

MX2 CLASS The Pirelli MX2 class has a long established history as a proving ground for many great Champions of the sport both domestically and for those who have gone on to international success. The list of past champions of the class shows how important the Pirelli MX2 Championship can be to the future of a riders career. For riders with international aspirations for either MXGP or AMA Motocross and Supercross, a Pirelli MX2 Class championship (or being a championship contender) is a minimum requisite that many teams will require before signing a rider to an international team and championship. Most recently past champions and title contenders such as Jed Beaton, Luke Clout and Mitch Evans have gone onto international success and factory rides upon graduating from the MX2 class. The Pirelli MX2 class title Honda Factory Racing’s Kyle Webster was crowned the 2021 Pirelli MX2 class Champion in the Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores (ProMX), after a dominant display of riding that saw Webster finish off the #1 position in only one race throughout the season. Behind Webster, the Yamaha duo of Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson would finish 2nd overall in the Championship with Yamalube Yamaha’s Rhys Budd in 3rd.
JESSE DOBSON
With Webster looking ahead towards his transition to 450 machinery, the 2022 crown will be up for grabs.

MX3 CLASS The Maxxis MX3 class holds a special place in the ProMX series - and the industry itself. As the graduating class from the junior ranks, the class sees a permanent rotating roster of graduating talent, where Australian Junior Motocross Champions and contenders face off against second year veterans of the class, all chasing their racing dreams of a Maxxis MX3 Championship and professional racing contract in the Pirelli MX2 class. Formerly known as “MXD”, this development class is now fundamentally a way for both privateer racers and manufacturer backed team riders to enter the ProMX series and learn the style of racing, schedules and track conditions of the professional racing circuit.
In the last full season of the series 2019 it was a two man battle for the title as Regan Duffy would square off against wild New Zealander Maximus Purvis.
Purvis would provide nothing short of incredible speed and excitement every time he was on track, however down the stretch Duffy was too strong and stayed calm to win his first championship as a senior rider. Perhaps a strong indicator of the raw speed of this class is the fact that Regan Duffy was selected as the MX3 open class representative for Australia at the Motocross of Nations that same year.
The class age structure has been modified to riders from 14 to under 18 to be able to compete on 122cc to 150cc 2-Stroke & 200cc to 250cc 4-Stroke capacity machines. The new MX3 class structure also allows unique opportunities for riders with exceptional talent and speed to then graduate early into the Pirelli MX2 category at 15, to be more in line with FIM international age groupings. In 2021, the heavily curtailed season would see Blake Fox take the title after a dominant and consistently brilliant season. Ryder Kingsford did everything he could to stay in touch with the leader, but fell short in what was a heavily reduced season. Kayden Minear was third aboard a KTM. In 2020, no races were run.
In 2018 it was a WBR Yamaha dominating year as Bailey Malkiewicz and Hugh Mckay from Tasmania would finish first and second in the championship respectively. Malkiewicz would also win the Junior World Motocross Championship in the same year that would eventually lead to a MXGP campaign in 2020 in the MX2 class. 2017 saw Victorian Cody Dyce battle hard against Jy Roberts. Perhaps the most iconic moment of this battle came at Murray Bridge where Roberts and Dyce clashed battling for the lead, with Dyce coming off second best and being ejected from his bike and the track. Ultimately this battle was over prematurely when Roberts was injured in practice at the final round, handing Dyce the title in what would have been a massive battle to the series title over the last two gate drops. The 2016 Championship was clinched by Mitch Evans over Western Australia’s Connor Tierney, Cooper Pozniak and Tasmanian Wade.
