For many years Penrite have supported the series as a main team sponsor along with various round sponsorships and privateer support services. It gives us great pleasure to partner with Motorcycling Australia in developing a truly worldclass Motocross experience for 2021 and beyond. At Penrite, bikes are definitely something that’s part of our DNA, we have always worked hard to support the bike scene and develop our products alongside the involvement with its the riders. This year we are also working hard with MA to getting bigger crowds back to the rounds and enabling them to experience the series up close and personal. Along with this we are also heavily committed to assisting local clubs and giving them the support they need and to riders, spectators and other series sponsors. Another great aspect of the new look Penrite ProMX Championship is the televised component enabling the riders to be showcased on an even larger format and hopefully the next generation, complimented with greater inclusions of other catergories such as juniors, women and vets ensuring that as a competitor and spectator there is something for everyone.

This is our second year as the ‘presented by’ partner for ProMX, and we are thrilled to be on board again this year. For AMX, we’ve always lived and breathed MX. From our beginnings in 2008 selling clearance MX gear out of a shed in Bayswater, Victoria, to today with stores across 4 states and an ever-growing team, MX is in our blood. The sport provides the opportunity for everyone to enjoy MX, from spectators to riders to industry sponsors like us, we just love getting involved and having some fun. We also see our support of ProMX as a small contribution to ensure MX stays where it should be, a well-managed sport viewed by as many spectators as possible who have a quality experience, whether at the track or watching the live stream or on broadcast TV through SBS. We know our sport is one of the most spectacular, challenging and extreme sports out there today and we want it to grow for the benefit of teams, riders and spectators alike. We’ll be at all rounds, so come and talk to our team about anything MX. We enjoy getting along to these events, it’s what being involved in this industry is all about and we’re privileged to be here to support racing and just talk bikes for a weekend! And by the way, if you pass by our trade stand you can pick yourself up some goodies at special ProMX pricing as well.

The Penrite team will be on hand at all upcoming rounds of the ProMX , we hope you’ll come by and give us some feedback on what you’d like to see be included or added to the series and hopefully look to trying out Penrite’s Australian made and owned products. In closing, I would like to wish a safe and memorable season to the fans, competitors, sponsors and also the volunteers that are donating their time into making the inaguaral season of the Penrite ProMX a great success. Thank you for being part of the journey Jarrod

We are looking forward to a great year of racing ahead, as we know you all are, after yet another interrupted season in ‘21. With Motorcycling Australia’s organisation and the support of the race teams and industry we think this year will be the best yet.

Open to riders sixteen years of age and over competing in an open class structure on 125cc machines and up, the MXW class has seen many great champions emerge over recent years and go on to international success with the likes of Meghan Rutledge, Maddy Brown and Jess Moore all enjoying long standing careers in the EZILIFT MXW class. Formerly known as “MXD”, this development class is fundamentally a way for both privateer racers and manufacturer backed team riders to enter the ProMX series and learn the style of racing, schedules and track conditions of the professional racing circuit. The goal of the Maxxis MX3 class is to prepare riders for a successful transition and career into the Pirelli MX2 and THOR MX1 pro classes, or for an accelerated.

The three round Championship concludes this weekend at Coolum after visiting Wonthaggi and Gilman throughout the year.

WHAT IS MAXXIS MX3?

The THOR MX1 class is the elite category in the ProMX Championship and sees factory-backed teams fielded by all major Japanese and European OEM manufacturers. Riders compete mainly on state of the art 450cc four stroke machines (and some privately entered 255cc and over two stroke machines.) If you have made it to the THOR MX1, you are simply competing with the best riders in the nation- alongside many international riders who may compete in one off rounds or entire championships, further boosting the depth and star power in THOR MX1.

WHAT ARE THE VETS CLASSES?

WHAT IS EZILIFT MXW?

WHAT IS THOR MX1?

The vets are a wily bunch. Where others have hung up their helmets, this crew have continued to train and race and kept the dream- and fun alive. They are as cunning as they are talented- able to race at their peak while avoiding too many issues and crashes that would otherwise end their extended racing careers.

The Maxxis MX3 class provides a safe and competitive environment for juniors to graduate into the senior ranks at a National level. The class age structure is for riders from 14 to under 18 to compete on 122cc to 150cc 2-Stroke & 200cc to 250cc 4-Stroke capacity machines. The new MX3 class structure also allows unique opportunities for riders with exceptional talent and speed to then graduate early into the Pirelli MX2 category at 15, to be more in line with FIM international age groupings.

ROUND ONE - WONTHAGGI, VICTORIA THOR MX1

A huge crowd of 5000 spectators lined the fences to witness the incredible THOR MX1 class action at the sandy Wonthaggi track in Victoria, for the opening round of the Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores.

12 Season 2022 of the Penrite ProMX Championship, presented by AMX Superstores (ProMX) has thrown up some interesting and difficult scenarios. Through the year, two old rules have shown they still apply: you have to be fast, and you have to stay upright. We’ve seen leading contenders drop out of contention, wise old riders well in the hunt for the title and itis all going to come down to the final few rounds... However, to look forward, let’s first look back on the season to date…

The highly anticipated debut of Team HRC Honda Racing’s Kyle Webster did not disappoint, as Webster would set a blistering time in THOR MX1 qualifying, backing that up with setting the fastest time in the AMX Superstores Top 10 Pole WithShootout.poleposition, Webster would holeshot moto one and lead early, before going down and handing the lead to the defending champion Luke Clout on his CDR Yamaha Monster Energy machine. CDR teammate Aaron Tanti would move to second, with Todd Waters in third aboard the Husqvarna Australia FC450. Webster would mount an incredible charge through the field to close up to the rear of race leader Clout, but with two laps to go, Webster would push the front wheel in a turn leaving Luke Clout clear to take the moto win ahead of Kyle Webster in second, Arron Tanti in third, Todd Waters fourth and Brett Metcalfe in fifth. Moto two would again see blistering pace from Kyle Webster throughout the opening laps, as Aaron Tanti ran second followed by a fierce battle between Metcalfe, Factory KTM’s Kirk Gibbs and Todd Waters who rounded out the top five spots. As the race progressed, Clout would charge from outside the top five through to second and take advantage of a late race crash by Kyle Webster to take maximum points from round one with

In MX2 Moto one, it was Team HRC Honda Racing’s Wilson Todd who would find his way to the lead after early race leader, Gas Gas mounted Noah Ferguson would crash out of proceedings early. Todd would eke out a small lead early, only to be challenged for the rest of the moto by Yamalube Yamaha Racing’s Alex Larwood. Larwood would match the pace of Todd but remain several bike lengths behind throughout, and the pair would finish first and second at the chequered flag.

Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson rode a consistent moto to finish third, with his team-mate Bailey Malkiewic in fourth and Haruki Yokohama rounding out the top five on his Empire Kawasaki. Moto two was a familiar affair, with Wilson Todd leading from the early stages and Alex Larwood charging from a poor start to close in and match the lap times of the leader in second, trailing the previous MX2 champion for multiple laps around the sandy Wonthaggi track. Late in the moto, Todd was too strong and would take the chequered flag, ahead of Larwood in second and Bailey Malkiewicz in third, Jesse Dobson fourth and Ryder Kingsford fifth.

An incredible 80 Maxxis MX3 riders entered for the opening round of the 2022 Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores. With two groups of qualifying, the riders were trimmed to a final gate of 40 ready to battle on the fast and sandy Wonthaggi track in Victoria. With near-perfect racing weather throughout the weekend and a large crowd lining the fences, it was Ride Red Honda’s Cambell Williams who would dominate proceedings with 1-1 Moto scores on his way to taking out the opening round overall. Moto one would see Williams lead from the front, as Gas Gas Australia mounted Byron Dennis would finish second with WA young gun and KTM Australia mounted Kayden Minear in third. Moto two again saw Williams dominate from the front, while Brock Flynn would charge through the pack to second on his Husqvarna Australia ride. The EZILIFT MXW class and women’s national Motocross racing made a spectacular return at Wonthaggi round one to the Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores. With competitors coming from all over the country to reignite the national women’s elite competition, all eyes were on the stars of the sport to witness the next generation of talent take on the established competitors in the MXW field.

Ride Red Honda’s Emma Millesevic took the qualifying pole position in EZILIFT MXW and set the pace early, becoming the one to beat heading into the races during the day. Moto one saw new Factory Yamaha signing and Yamalube team rider Charli Cannon take the holeshot and stretch a lead from the front. First lap chaos ensued behind Cannon with several contenders going down in the first section of the track including Maddy Healey and Ebony Harris. Cannon would take the moto win, ahead of Millesevic in second and Ride Red Honda teammate Maddy Brown in third. Moto two would see Cannon again lead early, however this time Millesevic and Brown would battle late in the race, with Cannon taking the moto win and Millesevic maintaining second to the flag ahead of Brown in third.

In THOR MX1, it did not take long for the hype and anticipation that followed round one of the Championship, to ignite onto the Gum Valley racetrack. In what can only be described as a frantic opening moto, it would be Factory Honda Racing Australia’s Dean Ferris who would lead the pack from the gate drop, only to fall before the conclusion of lap one.

ROUND TWO – GUM VALLEY (MACKAY), QUEENSLAND

THOR MX1 A spectacular Mackay Gum Valley track presented riders, teams, and a huge crowd attendance from the region with an incredible location for round two of the Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores (ProMX)

CDR Yamaha Monster Energy and THOR MX1 Red Plate Holder Luke Clout would assume the lead position, where it appeared to be business as usual as Clout began to put together solid laps at the front of the field. However, things would soon take a drastic turn for Clout, as a dramatic crash on the backside of the racetrack would see the defending Champion post a DNF and end his day at Mackay (and title hopes) after a trip to the RaceSafe medical unit and from there being transported to a local Hospital by Ambulance for further evaluation. It would be Aaron Tanti on the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy YZ450f who would inherit the lead position from teammate Clout’s misfortune. Tanti sprinted at the front of the field but would eventually succumb to the charge of class Rookie Kyle Webster on the Factory Honda Racing machine, securing the lead position with nine minutes to go. At the chequered flag for moto one, it would be Webster taking the win from Tanti in second, whilst a freight train of veteran experience battled for the final podium spot. Todd Waters finished in third on the Husqvarna Racing Australia machine, fending off charges from both GO24 KTM’s Brett Metcalfe who would finish fourth and Dean Ferris who claimed fifth position.

Moto two saw multi-time THOR MX1 Champion Dean Ferris take a clear holeshot ahead of Aaron Tanti, Kirk Gibbs, Brett Metcalfe and Kyle Webster as the field battled for track position early. Kyle Webster began his charge to the front, first passing Metcalfe for fourth and then a mistake from Gibbs opened the door for Webster to move into third. As the moto continued, it was Dean Ferris who used the 25 minutes plus one lap moto to return to race winning form after just his fourth gate drop back from retirement. Ferris was simply too strong maintaining track position and his trademark strong riding style to take the moto win, ahead of teammate Webster in second. A late moto charge from KTM Racing Australia’s Kirk Gibbs moved him past Tanti into third, as Todd Waters and Brett Metcalfe would also shuffle Tanti back in the final lap, with Waters claiming fourth and Brett Metcalfe a close fifth position. In moto two, Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson would rebound after a fall in moto one to holeshot the start and lead early. Dobson showed great speed after being fastest qualifier in the morning session but would again fall mid-turn early in the moto.

• 3rd – Todd Waters PIRELLI MX2 In Pirelli MX2, Honda Racing Australia’s and class Red Plate holder Wilson Todd would pick up where he left off at Wonthaggi, executing a perfect holeshot and establishing great track position to pull away from the field in the opening laps. Yamaha’s Rhys Budd would mount a charge to attempt to stay with Todd in second position early. A cluster of riders battling for third position early would include WBR Bulk Nutrients Yamaha’s Brodie Connolly, Husqvarna Racing Australia’s Dylan Wills and Gas Gas Australia’s Noah Ferguson. As the laps continued, it would be Yamalube Yamaha’s Alex Larwood who would mount a charge to the front of the field, first passing Wills for third, then teammate Budd for second. At the finish, Todd would take the win, followed by Larwood in second and Rhys Budd in third. Dylan Wills and Noah Ferguson would round out fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

KTM Racing Australia’s Kayden Minear would battle with Connor Towill and Maxxis MX3 red plate holder Cambell Williams on his Honda Racing Australia CRF250r to secure second place. Late race falls from Towill and Williams would match with a late charge from Jack Mather who would claim third place at the flag. 2022 SEASON SO FAR ...

In the opening THOR MX1 moto, HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Dean Ferris would assert himself early on lap one at the front of the field. The first lap would also see Kirk Gibbs crash out of contention with Aaron Tanti colliding with the downed KTM rider’s bike, leaving both riders on the floor and at the back of the pack. Husqvarna Racing Australia’s Todd Waters latched onto the back of Ferris and the pair ran in their all too familiar first and second positions that we have seen so many times before. To make things even more interesting, GO24 KTM’s Brett Metcalfe joined the veteran freight train out front, the trio moving away from the rest of the field. Waters would pass Ferris- albeit temporarily - eight minutes in, but Ferris would return the favour in exactly the same spot just five minutes later. Ferris would then lead the trio of Australian Motocross legends to the chequered flag in an epic last lap battle, with Todd Waters in second, Brett Metcalfe in third, Gas Gas Australia’s Hayden Mellross fourth and a hard charging Aaron Tanti in Forfifth.the first time in the 2022 ProMX Championship, the back-to-back motos factored into race day proceedings for THOR MX1 in the afternoon. The short moto format would see the riders stay in this formation until late in the moto when Metcalfe would cross rut and crash following the first turn area, leaving the door open for Tanti and Gibbs to move forward. At the chequered flag it was Ferris taking the win from Tanti in second and Gibbs in third. Todd Waters put on an incredible charge from a first turn crash all the way back to fifth in the short back-to-back moto format. In the second moto, it was again Ferris who executed a perfect holeshot. Aaron Tanti pushed his way to the lead spot for the majority of the moto, however down the stretch Ferris was too strong, passing Tanti back with a few minutes to go. At the chequered flag it was Ferris claiming a perfect day with another first, with Tanti in second, Waters in third, Metcalfe fourth and Mellross fifth.

PIRELLI MX2 In Pirelli MX2, it appeared to be business as usual after HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Wilson Todd jumped to the front of the field early in lap one, passing holeshot Husqvarna Australia’s Dylan Wills. However, on lap three, Todd would uncharacteristically crash out of the lead, passing the number one spot to Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson. A procession of Yamaha’s battled for the podium placings throughout the moto with Yamalube Yamaha’s Rhys Budd, Serco Yamaha’s Bailey Malkiewicz and WBR Bulk Nutrients Yamaha’s Ryder Kingsford all in tow. At the end of moto one, it was Malkiewicz who emerged victorious, ahead of Ryder Kingsford and Rhys Budd. Over the years the class has attracted not only Australia’s best, but international stars from Europe and America and has seen many great Champions and contenders go on to launch international careers overseas.

The final rounds of the season at Coolum decided who would take the #1 plate and Waters was simply too strong in the sand, defeating Clout over the weekend taking the title. Many Championship runs have led to the final rounds and even last motos in the THOR MX1 class and you will see this as a pattern throughout the brief history outlined in this article.

The full effect of the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020,with no Championship rounds completed. The last full season was in 2019, and it was Todd Waters vs Luke Clout plus Hayden Mellross (prior to an ACL injury removing him from the championship battle with a few rounds remaining!)

42 MX1 CLASS

The THOR MX1 class has earned a reputation as being one of the premier domestic championships in the world.

The last two years have been interrupted seasons with events cancelled and seasons severely curtailed. In 2021, just four motos decided the title with Luke Clout taking the number one spot narrowly over Regan Duffy with Todd Waters also close second- and the title!

55 MX3 CLASS

Ultimately this battle was over prematurely when Roberts was injured in practice at the final round, handing Dyce the title in what would have been a massive battle to the series title over the last two gate drops. The 2016 Championship was clinched by Mitch Evans over Western Australia’s Connor Tierney, Cooper Pozniak and Tasmanian Wade.

The Maxxis MX3 class holds a special place in the ProMX series - and the industry itself. As the graduating class from the junior ranks, the class sees a permanent rotating roster of graduating talent, where Australian Junior Motocross Champions and contenders face off against second year veterans of the class, all chasing their racing dreams of a Maxxis MX3 Championship and professional racing contract in the Pirelli MX2 class. Formerly known as “MXD”, this development class is now fundamentally a way for both privateer racers and manufacturer backed team riders to enter the ProMX series and learn the style of racing, schedules and track conditions of the professional racing circuit.

The class age structure has been modified to riders from 14 to under 18 to be able to compete on 122cc to 150cc 2-Stroke & 200cc to 250cc 4-Stroke capacity machines. The new MX3 class structure also allows unique opportunities for riders with exceptional talent and speed to then graduate early into the Pirelli MX2 category at 15, to be more in line with FIM international age groupings. In 2021, the heavily curtailed season would see Blake Fox take the title after a dominant and consistently brilliant season. Ryder Kingsford did everything he could to stay in touch with the leader, but fell short in what was a heavily reduced season. Kayden Minear was third aboard a KTM. In 2020, no races were run. In the last full season of the series 2019 it was a two man battle for the title as Regan Duffy would square off against wild New Zealander Maximus Purvis. Purvis would provide nothing short of incredible speed and excitement every time he was on track, however down the stretch Duffy was too strong and stayed calm to win his first championship as a senior rider. Perhaps a strong indicator of the raw speed of this class is the fact that Regan Duffy was selected as the MX3 open class representative for Australia at the Motocross of Nations that same year. In 2018 it was a WBR Yamaha dominating year as Bailey Malkiewicz and Hugh Mckay from Tasmania would finish first and second in the championship respectively. Malkiewicz would also win the Junior World Motocross Championship in the same year that would eventually lead to a MXGP campaign in 2020 in the MX2 class. 2017 saw Victorian Cody Dyce battle hard against Jy Roberts. Perhaps the most iconic moment of this battle came at Murray Bridge where Roberts and Dyce clashed battling for the lead, with Dyce coming off second best and being ejected from his bike and the track.

For the first time in 2022, we will be joined by the Vets classes at Coolum, Queensland for the finale of the Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores. The racing we will see at the Coolum track will comprise of two classes racing at once; 30-39s and 40+. The riders race modern machinery, and we will see them race twice on Saturday: Moto 1 – 25 minutes and Moto 2 – 20 minutes The vets are a wily bunch. Where others have hung up their helmets, this crew have continued to train and race and kept the dream- and fun alive. They are as cunning as they are talented- able to race at their peak while avoiding too many issues and crashes that would otherwise end their extended racing careers.
