Jarrod Harding Brand Manager Penrite OilAMX Superstores is proud to continue our partnership with the 2023 Australian ProMX Championship. We extend a warm welcome to all, spectators, riders, race teams and industry supporters.
We are looking forward to another great year of racing ahead, as we know you all are, after an outstanding ’22 season which saw some of the best racing in recent memory.
This is our third year as the ‘presented by’ partner for ProMX, and we are thrilled to be onboard again this year. For AMX, we’ve always lived and breathed MX. From our beginnings in 2008 selling clearance MX gear out of a shed in Bayswater, Victoria, to today with stores across 5 states and an ever-growing team, MX is in our blood. The sport provides the opportunity for everyone to enjoy MX, from spectators to riders to industry sponsors like us, we just love getting involved and having some fun.
We also see our support of ProMX as a small contribution to ensure MX stays where it should be, a well-managed
sport viewed by as many spectators as possible who have a quality experience, whether at the track or watching the live stream or on broadcast TV through SBS. We know our sport is one of the most spectacular, challenging and extreme sports out there today and we want it to grow for the benefit of teams, riders and spectators alike.
We’ll be at all rounds, so come and talk to our team about anything MX. We enjoy getting along to these events, it’s what being involved in this industry is all about and we’re privileged to be here to support racing and just talk bikes for a weekend! And by the way, if you pass by our trade stand, you can pick yourself up some goodies at special ProMX pricing as well.
From team AMX to you, we hope you enjoy the season ’23 Penrite ProMX Championship presented by AMX Superstores, now let’s go racing!
Rob Farrimond Business Manager AMX SuperstoresThe picturesque hills of Toowoomba’s Echo Valley played host to round six of the 2023 Penrite ProMX Championship, presented by AMX Superstores, with a host of unique kits present as teams embraced ‘retro’ round, paying homage to some of the sport’s most iconic looks throughout the years.
In the Thor MX1 Class, it was Brisbane Motorcycles
Yamaha rider Dean Ferris who stamped his authority on the field with a dominant 1-1 performance; KTM Racing Team’s Nathan Crawford clawed back valuable points with the Pirelli MX2 overall win over class leader Wilson Todd (Terrafirma Honda Racing); and in Maxxis MX3 GasGas-mounted Byron Dennis’ two second places saw him extend his championship lead.
Qualifying for the Thor MX1 class was topped by Ferris, who produced a blazing 1m48:548s lap to secure the AMX Top 10 Pole Shootout honours. Second place belonged to KTM Racing Team’s Kirk Gibbs, who was 0.5sec off Ferris’ time, with Aaron Tanti (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy) and Boost Mobile Honda Racing duo Jed Beaton and Kyle Webster rounding out the top five.
The multiple Aussie champion crossed the finish line with a 14-second margin over Beaton, who clawed his way back through the field after a poor start. Third was Raceline Berry Sweet Husqvarna Racing’s Todd Waters in a stirring return to championship form, with Gibbs and Tanti rounding out the top five.
Moto one saw Ferris come out swinging: he claimed the holeshot and that’s the last the competition would see of the #111 machine as he delivered a masterclass in rut technique and line selection.
Moto two began in a similar fashion, as Ferris launched out of the gates – but this time defending champion Tanti, galvanised after a late crash in race one cost him valuable points, latched onto the back of the leader. But Tanti couldn’t sustain the pressure, and Ferris cruised to a 15-second victory to bring up his third maximum-point outing in six rounds.
Ferris’ peerless performance in Toowoomba was ominous: he’d “changed his whole program” after a trying previous outing at Gillman, and it obviously hit the mark as he moved back into the championship lead over Beaton (221pts to 214), with Tanti (201pts) remaining in third.
Qualifying for the Pirelli MX2 class belonged to the in-form Crawford, who posted a time just 0.101sec faster than arch-rival, Todd. In third was GasGas Racing’s Noah Fergusson, followed by Rhys Budd (Serco Yamaha) and Kaleb Barham (Yamalube Yamaha Racing).
brawl ensued between Connolly and Fergusson at the head of the field, while Crawford charged from the back of the pack to wind up on the rear end of the duo by the midpoint.
This season’s racing has been nothing short of explosive and, with Polyflor Honda Racing’s Brodie Connolly storming to the moto one holeshot, it was apparent this trend was set to continue. An all-out
Crawford then made light work of the leaders, and he stormed to victor over Fergusson, Todd, Budd and Victorian privateer Liam Andrews (Honda).
Moto two featured another Todd versus Crawford epic, as the duo would battle for the entire 25-minute affair. However, it was Todd who eventually got the upperhand to win by five seconds, while Fergusson put in a strong ride for third. Connolly and Budd added to their consistent outings with fourth and fifth place respectively.
Crawford made points on Todd in Toowoomba, though probably not as many as he’d have liked, as the defending champion remained atop the
leaderboard with a comfortable 35pts in hand. Crawford remained in second on 207pts, while New Zealand sensation Connolly continued to stand strong in third with 18
Entering the Echo Valley round with the championship leader’s red plate, Dennis showed poise on the technical red clay circuit, posting consistent 2-2 results which landed him the top step of the podium. However, chaos would ensue around him throughout the day as his championship contenders showed immense speed but also fell victim to the rutted surface at various stages.
Yamaha’s Jake Cannon took victory in the final moto, though an 11th to start the day meant that he only notched fourth place, while Empire Kawasaki’s Cambell Williams finished fifth after 4-8 results.
Husqvarna rider and championship hopeful Jack Mather finished second overall despite a fall while leading in moto two – he finished fifth after a win in the opener.
Dennis extended his points lead to 25 (230 to 205) over Mather in second, while Cannon is in third on 176.
