Tiguan heralds a new era for SUVs
V
olkswagen have now been in South Africa for 65 years and they are a well known, well-loved brand. Volkswagen have built up this brand image with marketing campaigns that capture hearts and minds by telling beautiful stories. Many will remember Volkswagen adverts, examples such as Lucky, Memories and the father and son Touareg journey immediately come to mind. They have then backed this up with great product. One such example is the Tiguan, although often under rated, it has enjoyed reasonable success in the medium SUV market. The first Tiguan was launched in 2008 and received a facelift in 2011. The car is now 53 kilograms lighter, 6cm longer, 3cm wider and has a 7,7cm longer wheelbase. The Tiguan is the first SUV to be based on Volkswagens MQB platform, which has set standards in design, comfort and convenience. This also means that it benefits from the latest available technology and shares underpinnings with successful models such as the Golf and Passat. The Golf is a great car and a leader in the hatch segment, using the same platform catapults the Tiguan from mommy mobile to an eye-catching desirable SUV, with all the necessary technology on board. With the Tiguan, Volkswagen is introducing a completely new design character for its SUVs, which combines striking proportions with a clear commitment to sophistication and authority. The attitude is backed up by details such as the horizontally aligned unit formed by the radiator grille and headlights, and the higher waist line compared to the previous model. Prominent wheelarches add to the rugged
looks, the muscular stance creating the illusion that the car is much wider than what it is. A first for an SUV is the fitment of dual LED headlights. The LED basic headlights deliver 10 percent better lighting performance compared to halogen headlights and the light has a much whiter appearance than with the basic H7 headlights. On top of this, the all LED headlight with lens and reflector, adds another highlight, being more powerful than a bi-xenon headlight. All models can be equipped with the R-line package, which gives the car a sportier look and great road presence thanks to sportier front and rear bumpers and alloy wheels. The R-line package will retail for R18 000. The Tiguan remains capable off-road, with a rugged 4MOTION all-wheel drive system that includes premium class technology for use on and off road.A spacious interior is complimented by new generation seats, improved interior and boot space, which now boasts 520 litres of space and can be expanded to 1655 litres when the seats fold down in a 40/20/40 fashion. The rear offers 29mm more knee room and the sliding rear bench can also move 180 mm, maximising either legroom or boot space, depending on the requirements. Manual air-conditioning, electric front and rear windows, cruise control, front fog lights, leather multi-function steering wheel, connectivity package and roof rails are among the many standard-fit features on all models in the range. Some of the technology features include Adaptive Cruise control with front assist, active information display, heads up display, 3-zone climatronic and
an electric tailgate. Safety features include multi collision brake, pre-crash, driver and front passenger airbags, an airbag curtain system, front seat side impact airbags, electronic stability control, XDS transverse differential lock, fatigue detection, and an active bonnet for increased pedestrian safety. The active bonnet reduces the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists. When contact is made with the bumper, a sensor strip triggers a pyrotechnic actuator that lifts the rear edge of the bonnet by around 50mm within 22 milliseconds. This increases the distance between the hard engine components and the relatively flexible bonnet. The active info display works in combination with the display of the radio or navigation system to create a virtual, flexible human-machine interface whose displays compliment one another. Six different views are available for the optional 12.3 inch Active Info Display. Also interesting is an off-road display profile with steering angle indicator and compass that was specifically designed for the car. When navigation is activated the large central
3
display can be selected, as in the Passat. 3D navigation is shown directly in the Active Info Display, in addition to the infotainment screen. Navigation is also supported by the optional retractable heads-up display that is integrated into the Tiguan’s dashboard and boasts laser-etched texturing. Information such as driving speed, speed limit, direction arrows for navigation and indicators for driver assistance systems are projected into the driver’s line of sight. The Tiguan is equipped with the latest generation of infotainment systems. There is a choice of three different radios, and they are now Apple Car play functional and Android Auto ready. At launch, the new Tiguan will be offered with two 1.4 TSI engines boasting 92kW and 110kW. The 2.0 TDI engines with 81kW, 105kW and 130kW as well as the range topping 2.0TSI with 162kW will be introduced in the last quarter of 2016. The high powered engines will be offered with 4MOTION as standard, while there will be the choice of Trendline, Comfortline and Highline equipment levels.
The 1.4-litre TSI with 92kW has up to 200Nm of torque while the 110 kW delivers up to 250Nm of torque. The latter variant has cylinder deactivation technology which is available for the first time on a Volkswagen in South Africa. This technology temporarily shuts off the second and third cylinder, which in turn reduces the fuel consumption. The 92kW version will be available with a six-speed manual transmission while buyers of the 110kW will have a choice between the manual and a sixspeed DSG transmission. Both engines feature BlueMotion technology, including Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems to enhance fuel economy and reduce emissions. With vast improvements in the styling and technology departments, it is interesting to note that the pricing of the Tiguan has not increased substantially. The entry level 1.4 TSI Trendline Manual retails for R378 000, making the Tiguan a great value for money offering in a market that sees new competitors launched almost on a monthly basis. – Reuben van Niekerk

Macan Turbo gets added performance
A
s the sports car of the compact SUV segment, the Macan has been setting standards in terms of driving dynamics since its debut and now Porsche is upping the ante once again. Equipped with the Performance Package, the Macan Turbo now tops off the model line, impressing with enhanced driving properties, increased agility and an even greater emotional appeal. After the performance enhancement, the twin-turbocharged, 3.6-litre V6 engine
delivers 324 kW. With 30 kW more than the Macan Turbo, this figure places the new variant firmly in the top spot of this model line. The car now accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds (a reduction of 0.4 seconds), and achieves a new top speed of 272 km/h (an increase of 6 km/h). The maximum torque has also risen to 600 Nm (an increase of 50 Nm) and is available to the driver across a broad rev range of between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm. This also increases the tractive force:
In Sport Plus mode, the time taken to accelerate from 80 km/h to 120 km/h has dropped to 2.9 seconds (a reduction of 0.2 seconds). Depending on the tyres, fuel consumption (in line with the NEDC) for the new top-of-the-range Macan model is between 9.4 l/100 km and 9.7 l/100 km. However, it is not just the engine power that is given a boost in the Macan Turbo equipped with the Performance Package – a newly developed brake system, lowered body, controlled sports chassis, Sport
Chrono Package and sports exhaust system are all fitted as standard. The front axle features grooved brake discs with a diameter of 390 millimetres, which are 30 millimetres larger than the brake discs fitted on the non-Performance Package variant of the Macan Turbo. The discs are gripped by six-piston brake callipers completed with a red paint finish. Available at the push of a button, the optimally tuned Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) delivers an exceptionally sporty posi-
tion on the road with vehicle lowered by 15 millimetres. Air suspension with self-levelling function and height adjustment, lowered by ten millimetres, is also available as an option. With the Sport Chrono Package, drivers can ramp up the performance of the Macan Turbo even further. In Sport Plus mode, this package ensures the chassis, engine and transmission are tuned to sporty effect – accompanied by an even more emotional sound from the sports exhaust system. The seven-speed PDK double-clutch transmission is now designed to deliver extremely short response times, optimum switching points and increased torque during gear changes for maximum acceleration. To customise the Macan Turbo with Performance Package, a range of tailored equipment options are available, such as the Turbo Exterior Package. Features available with this package include 21-inch wheels in the 911 Turbo design with lateral spokes painted in highgloss black, LED main headlights equipped with PDLS Plus and numerous other elements finished in black. The Turbo Interior Package delivers a black leather interior with lavish Alcantara elements, colour appliqué in numerous areas and carbon elements such as the door entry guards with the model logo lit up in white.

Thrills aplenty at Kyalami festival
T
he inaugural South African Festival of Motoring, held at the iconic Kyalami racetrack, got the adrenalin pumping as it ushered in a new era of global interactive motor shows. Reuben van Niekerk reports With the demise of the Johannesburg International Motor Show, organisers decided to develop a new platform that would be tailor-made for the city’s rejuvenated Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. Based on the successful Goodwood Festival of Speed, South Africa’s Festival of Motoring aimed to concentrate vehicle activities on the racetrack, while also showcasing new models and introducing food, fashion, music and other attractions to the automotive mix. The event took place over five days last month and attracted more than 50 000 visitors. The show’s new concept, backed by the RMI, meant visitors could interact with latest automotive technology in a much more tangible way than just looking at cars or sitting in them, as was the case with JIMS. They could now experience the machines in action around the racetrack. Queues of willing passengers waiting to go for a hot lap bore testimony to the new format’s popularity. Mercedes-Benz opened the event by inviting former F1 ace, David Coulthard, to chauffeur selected guests around the track at high speed in an AMG GT3 sports car, while many well-known local drivers performed a similar service for excited visitors for the full duration of the show. Toyota used the event to showcase its latest Dakar Rally contender, the mid-engined Hilux Evo. The company also launched its Etios Sprint and announced subtle changes to
models in the Hilux and Fortuner ranges. Through video footage, visitors also got a glimpse of the brand’s C-HR, a new hatchback that features a 1,2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 84kW and 185Nm. The model is due for launch in the first quarter of next year. BMW showcased a number of special models including the 760Li, M3 30 Jahre and the M4 GTS. There are only 700 units of the latter model worldwide and all 23 allocated to South Africa have been sold. Performance figures of 3,8 seconds to 100km/h thanks to 368kW and 600Nm bear testament to the thrills the show car produced on the track. I was afforded an opportunity to take the M4 GTS around Kyalami in a sunrise session and the car really impressed. A combination of less weight, extra power and performance brakes and suspension transform the car into a serious track weapon, but also one that is easy to drive fast. The steering is so much better than that of the standard M4, with the car having been set up so that it turns in effortlessly. Also on display was the BMW 760Li with its V12 engine, producing 448kW and 800Nm, and X-drive system allowing this 7-series to get to 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds. Equipped with a very high level of specification this model will sell for R2.6 million when it goes on sale locally next year. BMW also hosted Schubert Motorsport, which runs a M6 GT3 in international GT events, the model at Kyalami having recently won the 24 hours of Spa. In the hands of BMW works driver Jens Klingmann, the vehicle set the fastest time for GT cars at the local circuit – 1:41.
I was privileged to go around the circuit with Klingmann and the levels of grip, acceleration and stopping power of the M6 was mind blowing, the driver and car surpassing any benchmarks that I have previously experienced around the track. The big star on the Volkswagen stand was the new Tiguan, which represents a completely new design character for the brand’s SUVs. Striking proportions combined with a clear commitment to sophistication and authority are apparent in details such as the horizontal alignment of radiator grille and headlights, and the higher waist line compared to the previous model. The Tiguan is currently available with a choice of 1,4-litre turbocharged engines while 2,0-litre petrol and diesel derivatives will be added to the line-up in 2017. Land Rover unveiled its Evoque Convertible, the model combining bold design with a comprehensive level of luxury specification and a sophisticated folding roof to create a no compromise, all-seasons convertible. At sister brand Jaguar, the covers were lifted on an F-Type SVR, billed as the company’s fastest and most powerful series production road car. The model is powered by 5,0-litre supercharged V8 and delivers power and torque ratings of 423kW and 700Nm. Along with a host of Skyline heritage models, Nissan showcased its latest GT-R. The new model offers a range of styling, mechanical, luxury and performance upgrades that make it an accomplished, everyday supercar, with more power on tap at mid- and high engine speeds. It, too, drew crowds of visitors for thrilling, round the track rides.
6
Next door, Datsun expanded its model range by unveiling Go Plus and Go Plus panel van derivatives. One of the features of this inaugural Festival of Motoring was the celebration of 120 years since the first motor car arrived in South Africa. To this end there were more than 100 exotic supercars and collectable classic models on show. With the main circuit, dynamic handling circuit and 4x4
track operating at full capacity there was no shortage of exciting opportunities for visitors while a beer garden with live music contributed to the festival atmosphere and was a welcome respite for tired feet and adrenaline drained bodies. Mark your calendar for 30 August - 3 September 2017 when the event returns to Kyalami under a new Days on Wheels banner. – Reuben van Niekerk

All hail the best Nissan GT-R yet
T
he new Nissan GT-R arrived in South Africa just in time for the 2016 Festival of Motoring. The new model offers a range of styling, mechanical, luxury and performance upgrades that makes it a more accomplished everyday supercar, with a major improvement in its everyday driveability and more power on tap at mid- and high engine speeds. In terms of styling the GT-R has received a new bonnet, bumpers, grille and side sills along with new 20 inch forged alloy wheels. The 2017 GT-R features the most comprehensive styling upgrades to date, with all features offering a performance benefit as well. Viewed from the front, the new GT-R is fitted with a wider, deeper V-motion grille with new matte chrome trim and a redesigned mesh grille pattern. Apart from the more aggressive look, this new design improves air flow to the engine for enhanced cooling. The grille is fitted between a new front bumper and redesigned bonnet. The bonnet has deeper character lines, which have been designed to work in unison with the new front bumper and bottom lip and the wider side sills for improved air flow and greater stability at very high speeds. Rounding off the new design is a new rear bumper with functional air vents. This new bumper also aids high-speed air flow for improved drag on the rear wing and greater downforce at high speeds and on the track. The GT-R’s drag
coefficient remains a low 0.26. The 2017 GT-R features a brand new interior, replete with hand-selected nappa leather and real carbon fibre. The dashboard has been redesigned to be more elegant and simple, with the number of buttons in view of the driver reduced from 27 to 11. This was made possible by moving many of the control functions to the new, larger 8 inch capacitive touch screen with Nissan’s proprietary Display Command system. The dashboard itself is upholstered in a large, single piece of hand-selected soft nappa leather. The slight increase in weight of this leather cladding is more than offset by a new type of cushioning material, which is lighter than the material previously used. The new GT-R now features steering wheel mounted paddle shifts for the dual-clutch gearbox. The new set-up allows for easier mid-turn gearshifts. Both the gear shift paddles and air vent controls have been re-engineered for a more positive tactile feel. The seats are also upholstered in nappa leather and feature a new carbon fibre chassis for an additional weight reduction, while new sound dampening and an acoustic glass windshield keep unwanted road and wind noise from the cabin. The hand-built VR38DETT V6 engine remains the heart of the 2017 R35, but it has been further refined and improved for this model. The engine benefits from greater boost from the turbo
chargers, which are similar to those featured in the GT-R GT3 racing car. It also receives individualised timing control on each cylinder for more power and torque and significantly improved engine performance in the mid- and high-rev ranges. The VR38DETT torque delivery now peaks at 632 Nm (up from 628 Nm) at a wider band from 3 300 rpm to 5 800 rpm. Kilowatt has increased from 397 kW to 408 kW at 6 800 rpm. A key ingredient in the 2017 GT-R’s blistering 0-100 km/h run is its launch control system and an improved gearbox. The six-speed dual clutch automatically actuated gearbox remains fitted above the rear axle and is connected to the engine with a carbon fibre
7
shaft, but the shifting has been refined to be smoother and less audible. The GT-R also features a new titanium exhaust system that has been tuned for improved performance and a more appealing mechanical sound. This is enhanced through Nissan’s Active Sound Enhancement system. The GT-R is equipped with new 20 inch forged alloy wheels that are shod with Dunlop SP Sport 600 DSST ultra-high performance tyres. These tyres were developed in partnership with Nissan for the GT-R and feature RunOnFlat technology. Upgrades to the suspension and a more rigid suspension structure mean that the GT-R now exhibits even better stability and grip through quick
lateral transitions, such as on a fast switchback or hairpin on a race track. Along with these dynamic improvements, the engineers at Nissan have spent considerable resources and time on making the GT-R an even better performer at everyday speeds. In doing so, they have ensured that the 2017 GT-R exhibits none of the quirks that makes other super cars a taxing drive on everyday commutes. The new GT-R will be available from September at Nissan High Performance Centres. The first consignment of vehicles has already been sold, but order books are open. Priced at R1 950 000 for Premium Edition, R2 050 000 for the Black Edition the GT-R remains a great value for money supercar.

When closed it provides high standards of refinement with a layer of acoustic insulation ensuring interior comfort on a par with five-door Evoque. In addition, the position of the roof doesn’t affect loadspace, with a generous 251-litre boot offering unrivalled practicality for a convertible. At the heart of the high-class cabin is an all-new, high-resolution 10.2-inch touchscreen with Jaguar Land Rover’s next-generation InControl Touch Pro infotainment system, which debuts in a Land Rover. Raising the standard of connectivity for the brand, the highly responsive and super-fast InControl Touch Pro offers seamless smartphone
integration, door-to-door navigation, a premium sound system, as well as wireless and 3G connectivity. Evoque Convertible is underpinned by Land Rover’s world-class all-terrain capability, using the same advanced technologies as Evoque five-
door and Coupé derivatives. A customary choice of four-wheel drive powertrains combines with Land Rover’s nine-speed automatic transmission, Terrain Response system, Wade Sensing and All-Terrain Progress Control to ensure Evoque is a convertible for all seasons. The New Range Rover Evoque Convertible goes on sale in mid October 2016, with prices starting at R1 002 400.

Giulietta to make SA debut shortly
T
he Alfa Romeo brand continues to revitalise itself with the planned introduction of a number of new models. The eagerly anticipated Giulia makes its South African debut shortly reigniting the Alfisti passion in the country once again. But apart from this there are also a couple of other stylish Italian introductions that South Africans can look forward to. Following the international launch of the Giulia, the New Alfa Romeo Giulietta will be launched locally on 1 October
2016. The new unmistakable Alfa Romeo family design convention is definitely evident in the Giulietta. This is the new Alfa Romeo paradigm and ultimate expression of the meccanica delle emozioni – or mechanics of emotions – concept. The bold and sporty design is enhanced and embodied by several exterior style elements, such as the one-of-a-kind honeycomb grille and the new front bumper which recalls the shape of the legendary front trefoil.
Similarly, the lettering of the name “Giulietta” and its position on the back wink to those of the Giulia. The new model also sports the refreshed logo, which has been modernised preserving the distinctive style elements which have made it an emblem known and cherished worldwide. Burnished headlights, new bumper inserts, one-of-a-kind alloy rims and new oblique tailpipes complete the new look. The line-up has been rationalised and now features three trim levels - Giulietta,
Giulietta Super and Giulietta Veloce. The Giulietta Veloce trim level – the sportiest of the lineup – is even bolder featuring new sports bumpers with Alfa Red profiles, new carbon look headlights, glossy anthracite accents on the mirrors, door handles and on the grille and fog light surrounds. The exclusive sporty outfit is mirrored by an exclusive interior design ambience packed with premium quality accents. On the inside, the Giulietta Veloce trim level has new leather and Alcantara sports seats with integrated head restraints embellished with contrasting red stitching and “Alfa Romeo” written on the head restraints. Also standard are the contoured leather steering wheel with contrasting red stitching and the carbon look finish dashboard surround and door panels, all complemented by specific matte grey inserts. The sporty characterisation is equally strong on the Giulietta and Giulietta Super versions. The first has grey and black fabric seats, a one-of-a-kind matte black dashboard, leather steering wheel and new black inserts on the tunnel and door pulls. The Super trim level is even
bolder with new Alfa Romeo trademark grey and black fabric “cannelloni” seats. Premium leather seats are available on both trim levels as optional. Also debuting on New Giulietta is Alfa Performance, the exclusive service specifically created to enhance the driving experience. Using an array of digital gauges and instruments, drivers can control the main parameters of the car, measure their performance using special timers and see driving statistics on their smartphone. The engine line-up of New Giulietta now features three turbo petrol engines - the 1.4 Turbo Petrol, the 1.4 Turbo MultiAir TCT and the 1750 Turbo Petrol TCT. Staying true to Alfa Romeo spirit, the Giulietta is light and efficient courtesy of lightweight materials and the perfect weight-to-power ratio. Furthermore, it offers a balanced weight distribution, an evolved suspension system, and a responsive steering. The new model also features a slew of features developed by Magneti Marelli ranging from exhaust systems, suspension, and powertrains, to lighting devices. Another confirmation of how the right collaborations create the best designs.

322km/h Jaguar F-Type roars into SA
T
he New Jaguar F-Type SVR is now available in South Africa. The first Jaguar to wear the SVR badge made its local debut at the South African Festival of Motoring, at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Johannesburg. The F-Type SVR is the fastest and most powerful Jaguar ever to be sold in the country has been developed to fully exploit the lightweight aluminium
sports car’s full potential while retaining its inherent tractability and day-to-day usability. More powerful, lighter, and benefiting from an enhanced chassis and driveline and active aerodynamics, the all-wheel drive F-Type SVR Coupé delivers supercar performance and unrivalled driver engagement and reward. “The purity of the F-Type ’s form is something truly spe-
cial, but in designing the new F-Type SVR we had the opportunity to create something even more dramatic. Every additional form, line or component is there for a reason, and contributes to the car’s increased performance as well as its presence,” says Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar. “Cutting-edge aerodynamics have always been fundamental to Jaguar design, and every-
thing from the enlarged air intakes to the active rear wing is essential to the new F-TYPE SVR’s dramatic looks and 322km/h potential.” The F-Type R is already a benchmark in the sports car segment but this model represented the starting point for development of the F-Type SVR. Everything which contributes to performance and vehicle dynamics has been meticulously re-evaluated, re-engineered and optimised still further. Exceptional Ssraight-line performance was unlocked by raising the output of Jaguar’s supercharged 5.0-litre V8 to 423km and 700Nm, enabling the F-Type SVR to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 322km/h. Thanks to the fundamental capability engineered in to the F-Type from day one, Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division had the ideal platform to develop Jaguar’s fastest and most powerful series production road car. Additional SVR engineering developments includes bespoke, uprated rear suspension components to deal with higher lateral forces during cornering. The F-Type SVR also receives
unique suspension tuning and calibration of its Intelligent Driveline Dynamics All-Wheel Drive system. Rounding out the package is Jaguar’s Carbon Ceramic Matrix braking system, which saves up to 21kg when specified, while drivers can enjoy the thrilling soundtrack of the SVR’s supercharged V8 thanks to a lightweight titanium and Inconel exhaust system. “Our objective was to take everything that our customers love about F-Type – the performance, the handling, the sound, the design – and take it to a whole new level. This is what the new F-Type SVR delivers: it’s a 322km/h all-weather supercar,” says John Edwards, Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations. “With 423km, less weight, an uprated chassis and bespoke calibrations for the transmission and all-wheel drive system, performance is even more accessible and exploitable. This is a car that SVO has developed for true enthusiasts but it’s one that can be enjoyed every day.” The Jaguar F-Type SVR is now available in South Africa, with pricing starting at R2 286 300.
Foton launches special edition Tunland
T
he one ton pick-up has been part of the South African motoring scene for many years, but the fact that more and more people are buying these vehicles for both business and pleasure means that there is a rapidly growing market for accessorising them. Foton South Africa, backed by Imperial Holdings, which markets light commercials, has now developed a special edition of its 4x2 Tunland Luxury dou-
ble cab premium bakkie which has plenty of show. Known as the Granite it has been fitted with black accessories that change the exterior appearance significantly. Colour options for the Granite are white and silver. Importantly it is very competitively priced at R329 995 when one considers the cost of the extra equipment, especially the specialised rims and tyres. It is covered by a 5-year/
150 000km warranty and joins the existing Tunland range on September 1. The changes start with impressive-looking, black Hazzard alloy wheels fitted with 16 inch Cooper all-terrain tyres. Then there is a black roll-over bar and black nudge bar, as well as some special exterior black finishes. The interior is individualised with the model name Granite stitched into the covers of
10
the front head restraints. The Granite nomenclature also appears on the bottom of the front doors and boldly on the tailgate. Furthermore, the Granite also boasts leather upholstery and Bluetooth phone connectivity. “We believe that Granite is an excellent name for this special edition as we believe this bakkie measures up to the tough, rugged and alluring nature of this very hard rock,” explained Mike Scarth, General Manager Foton SA, who is responsible for marketing Foton light commercials in South Africa. The Tunland, which was developed for international markets, was launched in South Africa initially only as a double cab 4x4 in 2012. Subsequently a 4x2 double cab followed. The Tunland not only matches up or beats its premium range rivals in terms of its overall performance, but it also has one of the most spacious interiors, especially rear seating leg room, in the premium one-ton pick-up market. Its load box dimensions are very competitive too. Towing capacity of the Foton Tunland double cab range is a tireless 2,5 tons. The Cummins ISF engine, which powers all the Tunland models, develops 120kW of power and 360N.m of torque
and is also one of the few power units fitted to a pick-up in SA which complies with Euro IV emission regulations. The Cummins ISF engine is economical on fuel with a combined cycle figure of 8,3l/100km, while their emission rating is only 219gm/km. The Tunland is equipped with all the safety, convenience and security features required at the top end of the one-ton pick-up market in SA. The Luxury model comes standard with side steps and a tonneau cover for the loadbox besides the special features on the Granite special edition. The Tunland is made at Foton’s ultra-modern, multi-function manufacturing plant in Beijing and exported in builtup form to many global destinations. The Tunland is sold and serviced by a healthy Foton dealer network countrywide (including Namibia and Swaziland) and besides the robust 5-year/150 000km warranty, it carries a three-year corrosion warranty and roadside assistance. The 4x2 double cabs also have the benefit of a 2-year/40 000km service plan included in the retail price. The service interval of 10 000km means that less costly and abundantly available 500ppm diesel fuel may be used.

Enduro machine from the red team
H
onda has an all-new, genuine competition-ready enduro machine in its off-road line up – the CRF450RX. And it uses the engine and chassis package of the 17YM CRF450R as its base – Honda’s first totally new 450cc moto-crosser in eight years. The Honda CRF450R has been a benchmark since its introduction in 2002. It has defined the art of balance, with an engine that produces hard-hitting, useable power and a chassis that allows the rider to put every drop of that power to good use. It has always been a machine that offers total control, together with the stability and durability that Honda has long been famed for. This makes it the perfect platform on which to build an enduro machine, giving the CRF450RX both the pure moto-cross DNA to deal with any special enduro stage and the confidence-inspiring competence to handle flat-out trails, challenging climbs and tight, tricky sections with ease. The CRF450RX is something truly special, not just for Honda, but for the enduro world to ride and race. It looks different and feels different to the rest of the pack. And, just like the new CRF450R, it is compellingly fast. The new CRF450R has been built from the wheels up based on direct input from AMA and European MX teams, and
packs a power to weight ratio 11% better than the outgoing design. The CRF450RX is identical in almost every area, but has some crucial changes to create an uncompromising enduro focus. Both front and rear suspension are less firm, with lighter compression damping and a lower spring rate for the shock. It uses an enduro-standard 18in rear wheel, and sidestand and 8.5L fuel tank was also added for practicality and extended range. The CRF450RX’s PGM-FI ignition timing map produces softer power and torque delivery than the CRF450R to aid traction feel in awkward conditions. As on the CRF450R, the EMSB (Engine Mode Select Button) provides the rider with 3 distinct choices: Mode 1 equals all-round smooth performance, Mode 2 gives the most easy-to-manage throttle feel, and Mode 3 delivers the power in the most aggressive, responsive way. Electric start is fitted as standard. The CRF450RX’s 449cc engine shares the specification of the new CRF450R engine, which has received an 11% boost in top-end power for 2017, while still offering its trademark progressive, usable power and torque delivery throughout the range. Compression ratio is set at 13.5:1 with bore and stroke of 96mm x 62.1mm. All five gear ratios are the
same as the CRF450R, but with final drive handled by 13- and 50-tooth sprockets (as opposed to 13/49). The rider controls and displays are rationalised together and sited on the left handlebar; EFI warning, plus EMSB mode button, LED indicator and engine stop/start button for the standard-fitment electric starter, which makes restarting a stalled engine much easier, especially on tracks with rocky, uneven surfaces. Honda’s EMSB puts instant engine character adaptability at the rider’s command. With the machine stopped, and engine at idle, a simple press and hold of the button for just under a second selects the next map in sequence. The LED built into the button signals the map in use with a quick press and number of subsequent flashes (1 flash for Mode 1, etc). If a new map is selected the choice is also confirmed to the rider. Mode 1 is the base map and provides the most linearity in throttle response, making the engine’s power much more usable in a wide range of conditions. Mode 2 tones down engine performance (especially useful for a tired rider) while Mode 3 delivers the power in the most responsive way – with a delivery similar to the standard mapping (Mode 1) of the CRF450R. This is a full competition engine and needs regular
13
maintenance. Service intervals are straightforward however with oil/filter changes and valve clearance checks every 15 hours. The engine does not need to be totally stripped and rebuilt after a certain number of hours’ use. The CRF450RX uses the seventh generation CRF aluminium beam frame with improved turning performance, frontend stability and traction. It also delivers greater rear wheel drive with elevated levels of rider feedback and predictability. Several subtle changes to the geometry and dynamic parameters have been made compared to the outgoing CRF450R, all of which give considerable benefits to both
moto-cross and enduro riders. The centre of gravity height is 2.7mm lower. The wheelbase is 1482mm. Distance between the front wheel axle and swingarm pivot is 913mm, with distance from swingarm pivot to rear axle only 569mm. This geometry transfers more weight to the rear wheel for outstanding traction. Seat height is 959mm. Rake and trail are set at 27.4°/116mm. Total wet weight is 118kg. The CRF450RX is a slim, compact machine that’s easy to manage thanks to the low centre of gravity. Its rear tyre is loaded hard to dig for drive, matching the front end’s grip level and feel for traction at the limit.

Toyota Gazoo reveal 2017 Dakar challenger
W
ith Dakar 2017 less than six months away, Toyota Gazoo Racing SA unveiled the all-new Toyota Hilux Evo that will compete in South America, come January 2017. The new vehicle represents a revolution for the team, as it is an entirely new concept, utilising two-wheeldrive rather than the fourwheel-drive systems of the past. Opting for two-wheel-drive allows for a set of rules with more freedom than is afforded to four-wheel-drive vehicles. “We are very excited about this new direction,” says Toyota SA Motors’ Glenn Crompton. “At its core this is very much still a true Toyota Hilux, but at the same time we firmly believe it offers us new opportunities for Dakar 2017 and beyond.” The new vehicle conforms to all the rules as set out by the FIA, and used by the Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), organisers of the Dakar Rally. This means the vehicle sports a significantly lower overall weight of 1,300 kg as a target, versus the 1,915 kg of the 4x4 version of the Toyota Hilux. It also features larger wheels and tyres of 940 mm (in diameter) versus 805 mm for 4x4, significantly greater suspension travel and an onboard tyre inflation/ deflation system. “Essentially, this is our take on what a two-wheel-drive Dakar challenger should be,” says Toyota Gazoo Racing SA Team Principal, Glyn Hall. “We’ve taken all the testing and real-world experience we gained with the four-wheeldrive Toyota Hilux over the past five years, and repackaged it in the lighter, faster Toyota Hilux Evo.” Under its skin, the Toyota Hilux Evo features an innovative
layout that sees all essential components – the engine and transmission – housed between the two axles. This gives the vehicle an advantage over its competitors in terms of weight distribution, and with all the heaviest components placed near the bottom of the vehicle, the centre of gravity is lower than ever before. More freedom in the regulations allowed the engineers to explore new ideas and avenues. “The important thing for us was to retain as much as possible from the previous vehicle in terms of suspension setup and engine tech,” continues Hall. “With this in mind we’ve stayed with the same proven, state-ofthe-art V8 engine, and used all our knowledge when designing and setting up the suspension.” For the 2017 edition of the Dakar the ASO have announced the average altitude for the race is above 2000 metres. This means that the normally aspirated V8 will enjoy a 38 mm restrictor for the first time, allowing the modern Toyota engine to breathe more efficiently. It will also be the first time that Toyota, MINI and Peugeot will be using the same size restrictor, as previous years saw our competitors sport either a 1 mm or 2mm advantage. ‘‘This is good news indeed,” concludes Crompton. “The new car, along with the bigger restrictor, will place us in a strong position, giving our drivers a platform to work from when starting the race in January.’’ The new vehicle will now undergo rigorous testing and refinement, before being shipped off to South America at the end of the year, in time to take on the world’s most grueling motor sports event – the Dakar Rally.
