olkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) has adopted and localised key elements of the global strategic partnership between Volkswagen Group and BP/Castrol Global. The agreement includes cooperation between the two companies in the main areas such as; joint technology work on lubricants and fuels; preferred supplier status for BP/Castrol in the first fill fuels and lubricants and in industrial lubricants and greases; brand association including a global recommendation for Castrol branded products in the aftermarket; and the development of the aftermarket through the franchise network to ensure the customer is always offered the oil recommended by Volkswagen Group.

Currently, Castrol lubricants are recommended globally in handbooks and manuals of the Volkswagen Group vehicles. Oil filler caps are also Castrol branded, giving quality assurance to Volkswagen, Audi, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles drivers. VWSA now offers Volkswagen Genuine Oil, filled by Castrol, in different pack sizes. Volkswagen Genuine Oil fulfils all the manufacturer’s specific technical requirements, demonstrating locally Castrol’s proven ability to tailor its product to set specifications. In South Africa, VWSA and Castrol South Africa have formally localised the global strategic agreement by identifying opportunities of synergies between the two companies.

“VWSA is excited to have formalised the global working relationship with Castrol in South Africa and is looking forward to working together to expand opportunity in Sub-Saharan Africa as well. Synergies will be exploited in all markets to guarantee excellent service to our mutual customers,” said Stefan Mecha, Director: Sales and Marketing, Volkswagen Group South Africa. David Bouet, Managing Director for Castrol South Africa, said: “Castrol values its long-standing global partnership with the Volkswagen Group and is pleased to see that relationship now being established locally. We look forward to building on that relationship and developing new synergies as our relationship evolves.”

New Civic ticks all the boxes

N

ow in its tenth generation the Honda Civic has managed to continuously evolve to meet the changing needs of customers around the world. It is has consistently set the bar for fuel efficiency, driving performance, build quality and owner satisfaction, so it is no surprise that the Civic has been Hondas most popular model with 23-million units sold to date. The charismatic design offers tremendous depth of appeal, which is supported by the car’s technology and performance, allowing the Civic to remain true to its heritage and that of the Honda brand. With the focus on comfort, Honda incorporated advanced equipment developed for an era that demands new levels of integration between people, smartphones and the vehicle, while also increasing the Civic’s comfort, safety and quality standards. The exterior design was a challenge for Honda engineers as they needed to combine a sleek and aerodynamic exterior with D-segment levels of spaciousness and comfort. The Civics styling reflects a revolutionary silhouette for a fourdoor sedan, creating the overall impression of a sleek sports coupé. The result is a clean, sculpted body shape, that is reinforced by a lower, wider stance, along with a longer bonnet and short front overhang. Advanced full LED headlights and LED daytime running lights are fitted to the 1,5-litre Turbo models for the first time, with the remaining models in the range equipped with halogen units. LED daytime running lights are standard on all models. At the rear, the new Civic’s character-

istic bracketed tail light design has been re-interpreted with eye-catching LED light bars on either side. The interior embodies Honda’s ‘Daring ACE Design’ concept that combines high-quality materials with an ergonomically intuitive centre console and a sporty yet comfortable driving position. The uncluttered design features extensive use of attractive softtouch and accent materials that heighten the sense of premium quality. Driving comfort has been significantly bolstered through the fitment of sleek seat designs featuring a broader range of adjustability. Leather seats are standard on all but the entry-level model, and the steering wheel offers tilt and telescopic adjustment. Rear seat knee space has increased by 55mm along with further gains in shoulder room for the rear occupants. In the centre console is an advanced interface comprising of a seven-inch LCD display. The expansive display uses IPS technology, meaning that it can be viewed from both the driver and passenger seats. The air-conditioning can also be operated on the display panel, while the system allows connection with numerous smartphone functions including maps. A switch on the steering wheel can perform alphabet searches and switching of content. Under the bonnet is an all new 1.5 litre VTEC turbocharged engine featuring Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology’ which utilises the companys next generation of technological advancements for driving performance and fuel efficiency. This first ever VTEC Turbocharged engine produces

127kW from 5 500rpm and 220Nm from 1 700rpm. Honda claims that these outputs are comparable to a 2.4 litre naturally aspirated engine, but offer the equivelant fuel economy of a Honda Jazz. The variable valve timing control delivers a superb combination of output and responsiveness, while also ensuring efficiency to the benefit of fuel consumption across a broad range of operating parameters. The Civic is also available with a refined and updated version of the 1.8 litre SOHC i-VTEC naturally aspirated engine, which produces 104kW at 6 500rpm and 174Nm at 4 300rpm. Both engines are paired with a new series of CVT gearboxes as standard, this ensures powerful and smooth performance with the added benefit of maximum efficiency. Many people don’t like the driving style of a CVT gearbox, but I must say this unit is definitely the best of all the CVT gearboxes currently available in the marketplace. The whine and high revving characteristics has been sig-

3

nificantly reduced resulting in smooth linear acceleration, from the word go. Both engines feature Honda’s ECON mode, which optimises the engine and transmission for maximum fuel economy while Eco Assist helps the driver achieve the most efficient driving style by means of a colour changing indication on the instrument cluster. Vehicle stability is standard on all models, incorporating Hill Start Assist, along with ABS and EBD. If that doesn’t save you, all models are equipped with dual front, side and curtain airbags. The Civic is comfortable to

drive with the feeling of being in the car rather than on top of it. This is a hallmark, of Hondas through the generations, that has thankfully been retained. The Civic does everything that it needs to do and without any complications. It is well thought out in all departments, which will make it a great car to live with on a daily basis. There is no denying the reliability and longevity of previous generations of the Honda Civic, with many still doing duty on South African roads, and I have no doubt that this model will continue the legacy. – Reuben van Niekerk

New Model

The most intelligent executive saloon

F

ollowing the recent introduction of the all new E-Class, Mercedes-Benz is adding two additional models to the lineup – E 250 and E 400 4MATIC. The stylish new executive sedan with its distinct, emotive design and high-grade, exclusive interior, was successfully launched in the E 200, E 220 d and E 350 d guise. The new EClass has numerous technical innovations that enable comfortable, safe driving on a new level plus a new dimension in driver assistance. The vehicle comes complete with infotainment and control systems offering an all-new experience. In conjunction with lightweight construction and optimum aerodynamic figures, the new E-Class sets the benchmark. An optional new multi-chamber air suspension system additionally ensures outstanding ride comfort together with first-class driving dynamics. The latest innovations, including the Active Lane-change Assistant which allows the driver to effortlessly steer into the selected lane, makes the E-Class the most intelligent saloon in the executive class. At launch, the E 200 model of the new E-Class was introduced with a four-cylinder petrol engine while the E 220 d is powered by an all-new four-cylinder diesel engine. The E 350 d with six-cylinder diesel is also available. Further newcomers are the E 300 rated at 180 kW with a torque of 370 Nm as well as the E 400 4MATIC, whose

six-cylinder petrol engine delivers 245 kW with a torque of 480 Nm. All engines for the new E-Class are equipped with the ECO start/stop function. The petrol engines meet the requirements of the EU 6 emissions standard, while the new OM 654 four-cylinder diesel engine is already configured with future RDE limits in mind. All models available at market launch are equipped as standard with the new 9GTRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission. It enables fast gear changes and allows low engine revs, which has a particularly beneficial effect on efficiency and noise levels. This will be the first time Mercedes-Benz is offering a 4MATIC model in the E-Class range here in South Africa. The E 400 4MATIC is offered with 4MATIC as standard in the E 400 With the combination of 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive and 9G-TRONIC: the single-stage transfer case is flange-connected to the 9G-TRONIC as its own system. With the new add-on solution, it has been possible to combine the advantages of both designs and enhance performance. The torque continues to be distributed to the axles in a ratio of 31% to 69% in the case of right-hand drive vehicles. The suspension on the new E-Class offers agile driving pleasure on twisting roads as well as the highest level of ride comfort in this segment. The sedan comes with steel suspen-

sion as standard. Three suspensions with selective damping are available in conjunction with this system including Agility Control suspension with comfort tuning, Agility Control suspension, lowered by 15 millimetres included in Avantgarde Exterior and Dynamic Body Control, a sporty suspension with adaptive damping adjustment, lowered by 15 millimetres, which replaces the classic sports suspension. Alternatively the new E-Class can be equipped with multi-chamber air suspension all round – the only car in its segment to offer this option. Advantages of this system: three chambers of different size in the spring struts of the rear axle and two in the spring struts of the front axle make it possible to control, in three stages, how stiffly the suspension reacts. In this way, the occupants enjoy soft basic suspension, and the secure feeling of good handling stability as the speed increases. Furthermore, the highly sensitive and fast-responding Air Body Control multi-chamber air suspension features allround self-levelling for excellent ride comfort even with the vehicle loaded. It controls the ride height automatically depending on the speed and reduces fuel consumption on the motorway, for example, by lowering the vehicle. When driving on rough roads or access roads, the ground clearance can also be increased at the push of a button using the ride height adjustment switch. The multi-chamber air

5

suspension is augmented by a continuously operative, electronically controlled adaptive damping system. The damping at each individual wheel is adjusted fully automatically to suit the current driving situation and the condition of the road – such as in the case of evasive manoeuvres or on rough tracks. The system therefore delivers good road roar and tyre vibration characteristics, excellent ride comfort, and outstanding driving dynamics. What’s more, a Dynamic Select switch in the cockpit enables the driver to select from four Air Body Control modes: “Comfort”, “ECO”, “Sport” and “Sport +”. The additional “Individual” option allows drivers to configure their vehicle to suit their own preferences. Mercedes-Benz’s new as-

sistance and safety systems enhance safety, comfort and driver assistance to new levels. Active Brake Assist is fitted as standard. It is able to warn the driver of impending collisions, provide optimum support with emergency braking and if necessary also autonomously apply the brakes. In addition to slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles, it can also detect pedestrians crossing the danger zone ahead of the vehicle. Likewise included as standard are Attention Assist with adjustable sensitivity, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness, and Crosswind Assist, which can assist the driver by substantially reducing the effects of strong crosswinds to prevent the vehicle from drifting too far off track.

Mahindra launches new generation Scorpio S10 SUV

M

ahindra South Africa has launched a completely redesigned Scorpio S10 SUV. The newcomer features an all-new platform, a thoroughly modern look with dual projector headlights and LED daytime running lights, and an extensive list of advanced technologies. The Scorpio S10 SUV is powered by Mahindra’s highly regarded mHawk 2,2-litre turbodiesel engine, linked to a new, slick-shifting five-speed manual gearbox. The interior represents a huge leap forward, featuring a series of advanced features that include a six-inch touchscreen display, integrated satellite navigation, and Intellipark reverse assistance. The interior execution continues the new Scorpio’s contemporary theme with a dual-shaded dashboard and smart, blue-grey upholstery. A cutting-edge instrument cluster features a three-dimensional display, and includes a comprehensive information readout. The new-generation Mahindra Scorpio S10 SUV features a head-turning, thoroughly modern appearance, with more than a touch of aggression to suit its robust character and all-terrain capability. The front view is bold and assertive, with a sculpted execution that links the prominent, chrome-accented grille to the eye-catching, dual projector-style headlights. The headlights are fitted with curved LED daytime running lights, and advanced static bending technology for illumination in bends. A striking bonnet scoop feeds air to the engine’s intercooler for optimised performance, while silver-accented bezels

on either side provide a home for the indicator repeaters, and confirm the presence of the mHawk engine under the bonnet. Fog lamps are recessed into the lower, integrated bumper, while a silver-finished scuff plate underscores the Scorpio’s tough character. In profile, elements such as the accentuated wheel arch profiles, the side cladding, roof rails finished in contrasting black, and side steps are further proof of the new Scorpio’s go-anywhere intentions, as are the 17-inch alloy wheels shod with all-terrain rubber. The rear features bold LED tail light clusters, an integrated roof spoiler with LED brake light , and a tailgate that opens to bumper level, while the rear bumper features a neatly integrated design and is colour-coded. The rear screen is masked in contrasting black for further visual interest. The new Mahindra Scorpio S10 SUV isn’t just a crowd-puller in styling terms: it also features a raft of advanced technologies. Arguably the most visible expression of the newcomer’s sophistication is the centrally mounted six-inch touch-screen display, which provides an intuitive interface with the Scorpio’s infotainment system. The full-colour touch screen provides the gateway to a host of features and functions, including integrated satellite navigation, CD and DVD playback, as well as USB and auxiliary inputs. The screen also shows key vehicle information at the push of a button. The new Scorpio employs a voice-based warning system to provide audible alerts when a door is left ajar, a seat belt is

not utilised, brake fluid level is low or the fuel tank’s reserve is reached. In addition, the new Scorpio S10 SUV features sensor-activated automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, while a sophisticated tyre pressure monitoring system provides real-time information on the exact tyre pressure in each tyre. The system provides a warning if a tyre starts losing pressure. The Scorpio’s climate control system features fully automatic temperature control without the need to adjust temperature settings or fan speeds. An intelligent parking system dubbed Intellipark employs four rear bumper-mounted sensors that alert the driver about obstacles when reversing. The interior of the new Mahindra Scorpio S10 SUV mixes space and versatility to luxury, comprehensive equipment levels and more than a touch of class. The cabin features new blue/ grey upholstery and a two-tone dashboard with dark upper surfaces, while chrome-accented air-conditioning vents emphasise an overall air of style and quality. The futuristic instrument cluster boasts an innovative 3D effect design with eye-catching light blue backlighting. In addition to a speedometer and rev counter, the cluster’s digital readout can display a variety of vehicle information, including a trip meter, odometer, gear position, fuel level and engine temperature. A new, sporty multifunction steering wheel features switchgear for the cruise control and the audio system, allowing drivers to operate these without having to take their hands off the wheel. A new, ergonom-

7

ically shaped centre console is provided, as are strategically placed bottle and cup holders. Standard equipment levels are comprehensive and include a height-adjustable driver seat, tilt-adjustable steering, front seat arm rests, electrically operated windows and exterior mirrors, 12V charging points, remote central locking, and a remote fuel filler flap. The new Scorpio S10 SUV is available as an eight-seater featuring two bucket seats upfront, centre three-seater bench with 60/40 split and fore and aft slide adjustment, and a rear bench that can also seat three and that is removable to free up more packing space. Dual front airbags are standard, as are ABS anti-lock brakes with EBD, and panic brake warning flashers. All models feature a collapsible steering column, crash protection crumple zones, side impact protection bars, digital engine immobiliser and anti-theft alarm system. Mahindra’s highly regarded mHawk 2,2-litre four-cylinder intercooled turbodiesel engine has been retained for the Scorpio S10 SUV. The advanced 16-valve unit employs common-rail injection, a variable geometry turbocharger and an intercooler to produce a healthy maximum power output of 88 kW at 4 000 r/min, with an accompanying torque peak of 280 Nm between 1 800 and 2 800 r/ min. In the Scorpio, it’s linked to an all-new, slick-shifting fivespeed manual gearbox with a ratio set designed to offer both responsive acceleration and refined open-road cruising. The four-wheel drive model

gets a low-range transfer case, auto-locking hubs and shift-onthe-fly from rear-wheel drive to four-wheel drive at speeds of up to 100 km/h. The mHawk turbodiesel engine’s control system uses micro-hybrid technology that switches the engine to standby mode when not in use, for instance when stationary at a red traffic light. This reduces both fuel consumption and emissions, saving fuel costs and benefiting the environment. Considering that the new Sorpio S10 SUV weighs in at over 2,5 tons gross vehicle mass, the fuel consumption in the combined cycle of 7,2 l/100km is quite remarkable. A completely new suspension ensures significant gains in overall ride refinement and handling. The new Scorpio features an independent front suspension configuration with dual wishbones, coil springs and hydraulic dampers up front, while the rear set-up is a multilink design augmented by coil springs and an anti-roll bar. Suspension travel is 195 mm front and rear. In the redesign of the chassis, Mahindra’s engineers utilized hydroformed modular ladder frame technology, widened the chassis track for enhanced stability and adopted anti-roll technology for improved ride and handling. Power steering and a 10,8 metre turning circle allow agile handling and tremendous manoeuvrability, both onroad, and in more challenging off-road conditions. Attractive 6,5 J x 17 alloy wheels shod with 235/65 R17 all-terrain types and a ground clearance of 180 mm further support the new Scorpio S10 SUV off-road credentials.

Renault Captur gets diesel powerplant

T

he arrival of Renault’s fun and funky Captur Sunset Limited Edition Dynamique spearheads the introduction of a 1.5 dCi 66kW Turbo Diesel engine option to the range. The diesel-powered Dynamique is the perfect complement to its three petrol-powered siblings in the range: the Dynamique EDC featuring Renault’s new generation 1.2 litre 88kW EDC Turbo power plant, the Dynamique 66kW Turbo and Expression 66kW Turbo. An easy-to-drive, multi-functional and -faceted crossover that strikes the ideal balance between design and practicality, Renault Captur’s popularity and performance has resulted in the vehicle consistently maintaining second place in South Africa’s popular and highly contested B-segment small utility vehicle (SUV) crossover category. Launched in May 2015, sales to date exceed 4 500 units. The 1.5dCi turbo diesel is Renault’s most-sold engine worldwide. It boasts significantly reduced fuel consumption and CO² emission levels of up to 35% and is also the power plant behind Renault’s very popular Duster 1.5dCi Dynamique SUV introduced to the SA market in September 2013. The 1.5 dCi powering Renault Captur’s latest offering underscores these engineering skills and coupled with a manual 5-speed gearbox, this power plant affords unparalleled driving pleasure thanks to its extreme responsiveness in all conditions. Its turbo architecture has a specific and innovative design that simplifies air admission for a higher output. The high-tech surface treatment of its engine components, Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating on pistons skirts for example, improves engine

reliability, reduces friction and results in improved fuel efficiency. The 1.5 dCi turbo diesel engine delivers maximum output of 66kW @ 4 000rpm and peak torque of 220Nm @ 1 750 r/min. At 3.6 litres/100km in the combined cycle, fuel efficiency is phenomenal while at 95gm/km, CO² emissions are eco-friendly. Renault Captur 1.5dCi drivers are able to travel greater distances secure in the knowledge that impact on the environment is greatly reduced. While the beautifully practical Renault Captur crossover has the attributes of a standard passenger car, it embodies so much more. Combining the personality of a SUV and the spaciousness of an MPV with the dynamism of a hatch, Captur has proven itself to be ultimate all-in-one compact crossover package. And now with just a limited number of the trendy and exclusive Captur Sunset models available, who can resist? Its trendy and distinctive colour customisation elements make the Captur Sunset instantly recognisable and set it apart from the pack. The outside paint scheme is Diamond Black and is accentuated by roof and mirrors plus stylish front, rear and side streamline trim in Sunset Orange. Sunset Orange is used to striking effect on the inside of the Renault Captur Sunset Limited Edition serving to accentuate the vent, MediaNav console and door speaker surrounds and also parts of the steering wheel. Carbon black and the Sunset Orange zip collection seat covers provide the final complement to the customised interior. In addition to the front-end LED daytime running lights, the Renault Captur 1.5 litre

dCi also features cornering fog light activation (under specific conditions). 17” alloy rims come standard. Captur’s interior is spacious as is the boot area - which houses hidden, yet easy-to-access storage space. The boot floor is reversible: smooth on one side with an anti-slide surface on the other. Super-smart, like its siblings, the Captur Dynamique diesel derivative offers Bluetooth® connectivity which enables safe, convenient and hands-free telephony and music streaming from external devices when on the go. Renault’s MediaNav integrated on-board multimedia system with 7” touchscreen is standard. Satellite navigation and radio plus USB port are included in the price tag with every feature easily accessed via fingertip controls conveniently located alongside the steering column. ECO mode function is available at the push of a button and electronically modifies the engine’s response to automatically optimise fuel consumption (by up to -10%). Hands-free key card, electric side mirrors and electric win-

8

dows (front and rear) plus automatic climate control (with one touch, quick demist function plus air quality management system) are standard features while rear parking sensors with rear camera, automatic headlights and rain sensitive front wipers are standard across the diesel range. A tyre pressure sensor is standard on all Dynamique models. Smart technology that crosses over into the safety arena is the cruise control + speed limiter. To ensure a more comfortable and safer drive on highways and open roads, the system electronically maintains a steady speed as set by the driver. Safety is synonymous with the Renault brand and all models in the Captur range have prestigious 5-Star Euro NCAP rating status. The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) coupled with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) kicks in and automatically applies maximum brake pressure when an emergency braking situation is detected and is able to shorten braking distance by up to nine metres. The Electronic Stability

Program (ESP) ensures vehicle stability and assists the driver to avoid possible loss of control resulting from excessive speed or slippery road conditions. It detects and reduces loss of traction, reduces engine power and brakes on independent wheels in the event of loss of control. Hill Start Assist (HSA) is automatically activated (upon complete stop) as soon as an incline of at least 10% is detected. The system is engaged by stepping firmly on the brake and prevents any backward movement long enough for pull off without requiring the use of the handbrake. When stepping off the brake, the car will hold for approximately three seconds to allow pull off with no roll-back. Standard passive safety features include high-efficiency front airbags, head/chest side bags, seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters (front seats), anti-submarining front seats, anti-whiplash head rests and force limiter function (rear side seats). Three ISOFIX 3-point child seat anchor seat attachments are fitted to the front passenger and rear side seats.

New Model

Updated Volvo V40 now in South Africa

H

aving launched in South Africa as the world’s safest-ever hatchback in 2012, the Volvo V40 has been updated for the 2017 model year with a more premium, classier look, and a renewed sense of character. V40 Cross Country models also receive design tweaks, the results of which add an even more adventurous feel to the range. Designed in line with new and future Volvo cars, including the all-new Volvo XC90 and the forthcoming S90, the signature ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED daytime lights now feature on some models and the new Volvo iron mark takes pride of place inside and out. The updated Volvo V40 places emphasis on the individuality and unique personality of the driver in every respect. The Swedish design and uniquely Scandinavian approach to life means the Volvo V40 is different – much like the individuals to which it appeals. ‘It’s your journey’ is the creative campaign developed by Volvo Cars to signify this distinctiveness. While the timeless designs of the V40 and V40 Cross Country remain largely unchanged – and still incorporate a subtle nod to the iconic Volvo P1800 Coupe of the 1960s – the mid-cycle facelift incorporates a number of subtle design tweaks to keep the compact hatchback up-to-date. Available as standard on certain models and as a cost-effective option on others, new allLED headlights which feature Volvo’s new ‘Thor’s Hammer’ light signature give the V40 range an injection of class and luxury – and bring it in line with other new Volvos like the all-new XC90 and forthcoming S90. New grille treatments for all derivatives enhance the visage further, with the grilles now featuring vertical bars. R-De-

sign derivatives also receive a new grille treatment in line with their sportier personalities. Naturally, the new Volvo iron mark, which was first seen on the all-new XC90, takes pride of place up front. New badging for Inscription and R-Design models now also adorns the tailgate, as well as front door sills. New wheel designs enhance the side profile, with a vast array of elegant and sporty options available for V40 and V40 Cross Country derivatives. At the rear, the contemporary Volvo design, which harks back to the cheeky C30 and even the 1972 1800 ES Shooting Brake, remains unchanged. On the inside, Swedish luxury takes on a new meaning in the compact hatch. Uprated materials like soft leather and soft-touch finishes continue to feature, with new floating centre stack decor panels available for a more modern feel. The familiar digital instrument cluster remains available, with its crisp graphics and excellent responsiveness maintaining a smart ambience in the cabin. Charcoal, blond or amber interior colour schemes are available, alongside a new, timelessly trendy City Weave arrangement – inspired by the elegant Volvo Concept Estate. City Weave sees a blond/charcoal interior matched with a unique tweed-like textile pattern on the seats, and a twotone blond/charcoal steering wheel – the ultimate expression of trend-setting retro design. A new set of contemporary colours are also available, with the likes of striking Bursting Blue, dapper Denim Blue, pastel Amazon Blue, glowing Luminous Sand and the S90 signature Mussel Blue available for the first time on the V40. While the Volvo V40 exudes class and style in every direction, the Cross Country versions bestow the range

with cheeky and adventurous alternatives for those who like to express their more audacious personalities. Featuring a raised ride height (up by 12 mm to 145 mm), roof rails, black bumper cladding and slightly bolder nose treatment, the V40 Cross Country makes no bones about its business as a lifestyle enabler – especially with the availability of all-wheel drive in the range-topping T5 AWD derivative. On the inside, contrasting stitching and a different lighting scheme reiterates the difference in character. Available with all engine and gearbox combinations on standard V40 models, the R-Design upgrade releases a truly energetic look and feel. A sportier body kit with aggressive front and rear bumpers, large (functional) exhaust tips, bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels, sports seats and a more expressive interior ambience are included in R-Design models – turning any ordinary V40 into a spirited, muscular sports hatch. Introduced during the first half of the V40’s life cycle, Volvo’s Drive-E engines power each and every V40 and V40 Cross Country derivative. Engi-

12

neered and built by Volvo Cars, the modular engines, all turbocharged and available in petrol or diesel guise, bestow the V40 range with industry-leading efficiency potential – as well as great performance. With the exception of the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol Drive-E engine in the V40 T3 automatic model, the entire line-up is powered by new-generation 2.0-litre Drive-E engines. From the 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel which powers the V40 D2 – which can consume as little as 3.4-litres per 100 km and emit just 89 g/km of CO2 – to the powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit in the V40 Cross Country T5 AWD, which puts out as much as 180 kW and 350 Nm, the entire range of engines ensures an optimal balance between driveability and efficiency. The gearbox range continues to include six speed manual, sixspeed Geartronic (automatic) and eight-speed Geartronic transmissions. Despite having originally appeared in 2012, the Volvo V40 remains one of the best-performing cars in the world in Euro NCAP safety tests, and it

remains the leader in its premium segment. Its five-star safety rating was made possible not only by Volvo Cars’ relentless development of safety technology, but also by its supplemental safety assistance systems. They helped the car achieve a 100% score in the Safety Assist category – an accolade the V40 shares with the all-new XC90. Standard safety equipment naturally continues to include seven airbags, ABD, EBD and ESC (stability and traction control), and the world’s only pedestrian airbag is still available as an optional extra. City Safety is still fitted as standard to all variants, which uses autonomous emergency braking to avoid collisions with vehicles travelling ahead. In addition, the optional Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA), Driver Alert System, Lane Keeping Aid, collision warning with full auto brake and pedestrian and cyclist detection, and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems are available as optional safety extras which further elevate the V40’s safety assistance arsenal – while making driving easier at the same time.

Harley-Davidson upgrades Touring range

M

ore power. More comfort. More control. Harley-Davidson redefined touring by unveiling the all-new Milwaukee-Eight engine, plus all-new front and rear suspension for its Model Year 2017 Touring motorcycle lineup. The new Milwaukee-Eight engine, the ninth Big Twin design in the company’s storied lineage, is a clean-sheet design that combines the classic look, sound and feel of Harley-Davidson Big Twin engines with improvements in every aspect of engine performance. The Milwaukee-Eight engine, ninth in the lineage of the company’s iconic Big Twin engines, delivers more power and an improved motorcycling experience for riders and passengers while retaining the iconic look, sound and feel of its predecessors. An all-new design, the Milwaukee-Eight engine offers quicker throttle response, more passing power, purer sound, better fuel economy, a smoother ride and more of the feeling riders want from a Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycle engine. New Milwaukee-Eight engines will power every 2017 Harley-Davidson Touring and Trike motorcycle model. Milwaukee-Eight engines will be offered in two displacements and three variations: Milwaukee-Eight 107, 1745cc featuring precision oil-cooled cylinder heads for the Street Glide Special, Road Glide Special, Road King/Road King Classic and Freewheeler models. Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 107, 1745cc featuring liquid-cooled cylinder heads for the Ultra Limited/Ultra

Limited Low, Road Glide Ultra and Tri Glide Ultra models. Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 114, 1870cc featuring liquid-cooled cylinder heads for the CVO Limited and CVO Street Glide models. Each Milwaukee-Eight engine produces up to 11 percent more torque than the engine it replaces in Touring models. In addition to increased displacement, the Milwaukee-Eight engine features a higher compression ratio and four-valve cylinder heads with 50 percent more intake and exhaust flow capacity. The valve train requires no adjustment as the design of the rocker arms enables valve lash to be set at the factory for life. Dual spark plugs for each cylinder contribute to more-efficient combustion. A single chain-driven camshaft is lighter, mechanically less complex and creates less friction and noise. The engine weighs the same as the engines it replaces, so all of its extra power contributes directly to improved acceleration performance and accelerates 11 percent quicker 0-100 km/h, equal to a two to three bike length improvement. Efficiency gained in Milwaukee-Eight engine air flow and combustion, including the use of dual spark plugs per cylinder, delivers better fuel economy, depending on displacement and model, and a corresponding increase in range. The Milwaukee-Eight engine offers improved rider and passenger thermal comfort due to reduced heat absorption, increased heat rejection and a redesigned exhaust system. Each Milwaukee-Eight engine features a precision cooling

Get the holeshot on the Honda CRF450R

T

he Honda CRF450R has been a benchmark since its introduction in 2002. It has defined the art of balance, with an engine that produces hard-hitting, useable power and a chassis that allows riders of all experience levels to put every drop of that power to good use. From a rider’s perspective whether amateur enthusiast or pro-racer - it’s always been a machine that offers total control, together with the durability and longevity that Honda has long been famed for. And of course, the CRF450R has constantly evolved, with every upgrade drawing on lessons learned in the white heat of Honda’s moto-cross racing programmes throughout the world. Over the last eight years the CRF450R has been honed into one of the most complete race-ready rides. Now for 2017, revolution has replaced evolution. Europe’s favourite open-class moto-crosser is effectively brand new, wielding a major power boost from its new engine, plus increased grip and drive from a redrawn chassis. It looks different, feels different and delivers a whole new experience trackside. In plain and simple terms, it’s faster. Much faster. The 2017 CRF450R has been developed - with direct input from Honda’s AMA and MX GP teams - to be first out of the gate, first into turn 1 and to punch a blistering lap time. With a new engine packing an 11% increase in peak power matched to a chassis that can truly make full use of it, the 2017 CRF450R is stronger, sharper and more focused. And as MX1-class machines are all about competition, both 16YM and 17YM machines were raced back to back by

HRC in a series of start simulations. The power and drive of the new bike saw it gain a significant advantage. 0-10m took 1.53s, 6.4% less time than the outgoing machine. The new power unit uses innovative engineering on both intake and exhaust side. On the intake, straight passageways reduce air resistance significantly for improved combustion efficiency. On the exhaust side, the twin pipes divide close to the engine, facilitating the increase in compression ratio from 12.5 to 13.5, a key element in the greater power output. A 49mm Showa USD fork - steel sprung and developed from a race-ready factory item supplied to MX race teams in the Japanese championship - replaces the KYB air fork. The aluminium frame’s main spars are now tapered for more front-end stability and traction, and the 17YM CRF450R has completely revised geometry; it’s shorter in wheelbase, with a more compact swingarm and adjusted rake and trail. It also has a lower centre of gravity thanks to details like a lightweight titanium fuel tank and lower upper shock mount. Brand new plastics create ultra-efficient aerodynamic performance, and a smooth, ‘organic’ shape to give the rider ultimate freedom to move. They also feature film insert graphics, which deliver sharp visuals and a durable finish. For the first time, electric start is now available as an option. The CRF450R’s 449cc engine now makes a full 11% more top end power than the outgoing model. Overlaid, the power and torque curves of the 16YM and 17YM graphically display the performance gain of the new design: it’s stronger everywhere but especially through the midrange torque area and at the top end, with a major

increase in rpm, peak power and over-rev. To produce this gain in output every aspect of the engine’s performance was painstakingly developed together with HRC’s engineers. The cylinder head features a completely redesigned Unicam four-valve head. The rider controls and displays are now rationalised together and sited on the left handlebar: engine stop button, EFI warning, plus EMSB mode button and LED indicator. And Honda’s EMSB (Engine Mode Select Button) is the key that puts instant engine character adaptability at the rider’s command. With the machine stopped, and engine at idle, a simple press and hold of the button for just under a second selects the next map in sequence. The LED built into the button signals the map in use with a quick press and number of subsequent flashes (1 flash for Mode 1, etc). If a new map is selected the choice is also confirmed to the rider. Mode 1 uses the standard combination of ignition and fuelling maps to present a balanced power and torque delivery. Mode 2 is more mellow in nature, giving easyto-manage throttle feel. Mode 3 hits sharply, with aggressive and responsive power. Mode 2 and 3 can be further tailored via the existing HRC setting tool for mapping hardware and software. For the first time, an electric starter is now available as an optional accessory for the CRF450R. The completely redesigned chassis gives the rider absolute control of the CRF450R’s new power-up engine. The goals for this seventh generation of CRF aluminium beam frame were clear: to improve turn-

14

ing performance, front-end stability and traction, plus rear wheel drive with elevated levels of rider feedback and predictability. The major visual change is in the dual main spars, which are now tapered, giving greater front end stability, traction and feel. Torsional stiffness is 6.8% less - with the same lateral stiffness - to improve turning ability and feel. 270g has been shaved. Now an extruded (rather than forged) part, the rear subframe also saves 225g. The 2017 CRF450R is a slimmer, more compact machine that’s even easier to manage thanks to the lower centre of gravity. The new geometry loads the rear tyre harder to dig for drive, matching the front end’s enhanced grip level and feel for traction at the limit. The new CRF450R now wears a fully adjustable 49mm Showa USD coil spring fork, a version of the Showa ‘factory’ fork supplied to MX race teams in the Japanese championship.

It is not an evolution of the 48mm item last fitted to the 14YM, with which it differs in every dimension: the cylinder has a 25mm diameter as opposed to 24mm, the rod 14mm (12.5mm) with the compression piston 39mm (37mm). As you’d expect from what is effectively race-spec suspension, out of the crate the fork action is supple, smooth and fully in control. The fully adjustable Showa rear shock’s top mount is 39mm lower and the shock itself is mounted on the centerline of the machine (it was 5mm offset before), improving mass centralisation and high-speed stability. At 599mm in length the aluminium swingarm is 18mm shorter, with thinner shaping (in cross section) for the arms. It’s 220g lighter. A 260mm wave-pattern disc delivers effective heat dissipation, power and feel from the two-piston brake caliper working it; a matching 240mm wave-pattern disc and single-piston caliper is at the rear. Lightweight aluminium rims, with directly attached spoke pattern layout reduce unsprung weight; the front is a 21 x 1.6in, the rear an 19 x 2.15in. Fitted as standard equipment are Dunlop’s MX3SF and MX3S soft terrain tyres. The new CRF450R now uses a 6.3L titanium fuel tank, which weighs 513g less than the plastic design it replaces. The loss of half a kilo high on the machine contributes significantly to the lower centre of gravity. The smooth external lines of the new plastics help the rider move easily, and the frontal area is also narrower - the width of the radiator/ tank shrouds has been reduced by 30mm while a redesigned front mudguard directs a more efficient funnel of air to the radiator. The bodywork also uses durable film inset graphics that cover a wide area with scratch-resistant style.

GTC signals new era for SA motorsport

T

he inaugural Sasol Global Touring Car (GTC) Championship flagged off in style, thrilling the massive crowd of motorsport fans who packed into the Zwartkops Raceway under clear, sunny skies, fans who have waited patiently for the new era in South African motorsport to roll onto the track. Michael Stephen, the multiple Production Car Champion, will go down in history as the first winner of a GTC race, tak-

ing his Engen Extreme Audi A3 GTC to a pair of victories, starting from pole position in each heat. It didn’t take long for the action to start when Simon Moss, in the second Engen Audi A3, spun out in Turn 1 during qualifying, parking his pristine machine in the barriers. After the red-flagged session restarted, the top four qualifiers were within a second of each other, with Mathew Hodges setting the second-fastest time

in his Volkswagen Motorsport Jetta GTC, followed by the Sasol GTC BMWs of Gennaro Bonafede and Hennie Groenewald. Graeme Nathan qualified his VW Jetta GTC 5th with Simon Moss bringing up the rear of the grid. The Terry Moss-run Audi team put in a huge effort to straighten the badly bent car and to their credit got it race ready. The first race saw Stephen bolt into the lead, leaving his

15

rivals staring at the bootlid of the black Audi. Hodges hung on gamely in 2nd place, falling away a tad as Bonafede kept him honest. Behind the leading trio, Groenewald dropped back with a misfire, allowing Nathan to close and pass the Sasol driver. Midrace, Nathan spun in Turn 6, allowing Groenewald back into 4th place. As the race wore on, Nathan again hunted Groenewald down, taking his position as the race neared its end. Moss circulated slowly at rear of the field, passed by several of the front-wheel drive GTC Production Car competitors. The Sasol GTC Team withdrew Groenewald’s car from Race 2 as the team ran out of time trying to rectify the misfire that plagued him in Race 1. Race 2 saw Stephen, again from pole position, make another great start and led the field from lights to flag. Nathan slotted his Jetta GTC into second place, followed by Bonafede and Hodges. Positions remained static for the most part, until Bonafede, on the final lap, dropped a wheel onto the dirt in Turn 6, which promptly put the BMW into an elegant pirouette. Hodges flashed past into 3rd place, but pitted before the chequered flag fell, allowing Bonafede to reclaim his 3rd place. The front-wheel drive GTC Production class provided a

pair of exciting races: Shaun Duminy (Ford Focus ST) held off a race-long effort to unseat his lead by the Volkswagen Motorsport Golf GTi twins, Daniel Rowe and Mandla Mdakane, who raced nose-to–tail throughout. Race 2 saw a reversal of fortunes as Rowe triumphed ahead of Duminy and Charl Smalberger (VW Genuine parts Golf GTi). Series co-founder Vic Maharaj said: “Mission accomplished. GTC positions circuit racing as a premier class and is appealing to spectators who loved the look and sound of the cars. The GTC pit area was swamped with people all day as they wanted a closer look at the future of circuit racing. The important components were mechanically reliable and the series is already a hit with the public and drivers”. Head of Marketing & Public Affairs for Sasol Energy, which is the GTC series sponsors, Christopher Kabosha said: the management and staff of Sasol Energy would like to thank all the participating teams, corporate sponsors and the GTC management for the excellent team work and investment made in getting the 2016 Sasol GTC series off to a resounding successful start”. wThe 2nd round of the Sasol GTC Championship takes place at the Aldo Scribante circuit in Port Elizabeth on 10th September.
