Fourth generation Kia Sportage set to impress
T
he new Kia Sportage builds comprehensively on the success of the outgoing model, offering an innovative and sophisticated package to buyers in an increasingly competitive compact SUV market. The completely redesigned interior features high quality materials and design integrity, as well as great practicality and a range of technologies to improve comfort, convenience, connectivity and safety. The fourth-generation Kia Sportage features a bold new look, with the vehicle’s designers creating a sense of sporty and powerful energy from every angle. The attractive ‘face’ of the Sportage features the biggest change to the car’s design over the outgoing model, with Kia’s hallmark ‘tiger-nose’ grille and the car’s headlamps separated for the new model. The headlamps are now positioned higher, sweeping back along the outer edges of the sharply-detailed bonnet. A lower, wider grille – enlarged to support greater engine cooling – adds more volume to the lower half of the Sportage’s face. The result is a more imposing appearance and a more stable-looking stance, despite the new model retaining the same width as its predecessor. GT Line models develop the exterior look further, featuring new ‘ice-cube’ LED fog lamps and aluminium-effect skid plates. At the rear, the new Sportage features more horizontal forms and clearly defined features lines, with smooth bodywork on the tailgate, emphasizing the car’s width and giving the compact SUV a more stable appearance. The Kia Sportage GT Line also features dual exhaust mufflers and metal-effect rear underbody diffuser for a sportier appearance. The Sportage boasts an all-
new interior, representing one of the most significant improvements over the third-generation car. The cabin boasts a high standard of material quality, with a far greater proportion of soft-touch materials and the use of cloth, leather and stitching creating a more luxurious ambience. The fourth-generation model is set to be the most practical Sportage yet thanks to increased exterior and interior dimensions, with the vehicle’s development teams realising greater space and comfort for all passengers. Safety, as always, is a top priority for Kia, and the Sportage builds on the brand’s reputation for offering the highest standards in occupant and pedestrian crash safety. The fourth-generation of Kia’s best-seller has been engineered to meet the toughest and most demanding crash safety tests, thanks to an even stronger bodyshell, a wide array of passive safety equipment and the latest active safety and autonomous hazard avoidance technologies and scored a maximum possible five-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash performance tests. A total of six airbags are standard, further improving passive safety for occupants, with airbags for driver and front passenger, first row side airbags, and first and second row curtain airbags. Kia’s Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system helps ensure stability under braking and cornering through careful management of the vehicle’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and electric motor-driven power steering. Both systems come into play as soon as the Sportage’s many sensors detect a loss of traction, helping the driver to remain safely in control of the vehicle. Buyers of the new Sportage GT Line will also benefit from Blind Spot Detection with Lane
Change Assist. As before, the Sportage continues to be offered with a choice of front- and all-wheel drive, with the revisions to suspension and steering, and the latest electronic driver aids, providing stable handling and high levels of grip in all conditions. A first for any car in the C-SUV segment, the new Sportage will be available with a new wireless charger for mobile devices, as Kia looks to meet the increasing demand for new convenience technologies from car buyers. Located at the base of the central instrument stack, the wireless charger enables users to charge their smart phones without a wire connection, for a cleaner appearance. With ‘foreign object detection’, the 5W charging system activates when a compatible device is placed on the pad, and warns car security-conscious owners when they’ve left a phone on the charger when they leave the vehicle. The Sportage also features two USB charging points, one in the front and one in the rear, to allow all occupants to charge their mobile devices while on the move. High specification models in the Sportage range are also equipped with a 7-inch colour touchscreen with integrated satellite navigation as standard. These models also feature a rear-view parking camera, with dynamic parking lines displayed on the larger screen to assist when reversing into or out of a parking space. Kia’s Smart Power Tailgate, which opens the tailgate automatically when the key is ‘sensed’ in close proximity to the tailgate, is also standard on higher specification models, and a new Smart Welcome function, which turns on interior and door handle lamps and unfolds the door mirrors once the smart key fob is located within 1,3 to
3
1,7 metres of the door handle adds extra convenience. All of the aforementioned features are model dependent. When developing the new Sportage, a major focus for engineers was balancing the need for greater efficiency with the level of driving performance that buyers would expect from the new vehicle’s various petrol and diesel power units. The fourth-generation model carries over some of the engines found in the current vehicle, and most benefit from a broad range of modifications to improve fuel efficiency, NVH and power delivery. Additionally, the Sportage range has been expanded yet simplified, offering different engine and specification level combinations in order to give customers greater choice. At the entry point of the range is the Sportage Ignite, powered by Kia’s familiar 2.0-litre ‘Nu’ MPI engine, producing 114 kW at 6 200 r/min and 192 Nm torque at 4 000 r/min. While the engine is carried over from the third-generation Sportage, it has been significantly revised to improve efficiency, including the addition of advanced continuous variable valve timing (CVVT) and a new variable induction system, carefully balancing the intake of petrol and air into the combustion chamber for optimal efficiency. The Sportage Ignite is offered as a front-wheel drive model only, with a six-speed manual transmission. Moving up in the range, Kia is offering an EX specification, front wheel drive model powered by a significantly improved version of Kia’s durable and popular 2.0-litre ‘R’ turbodiesel engine, which produces 130 kW of power at 4 000 r/min and 400 Nm of torque between 1 750 and 2 750 r/min. The Sportage 2.0 CRDI EX is only available as a front-wheel drive model, and mated to a six-
speed automatic transmission. Builiding on the high specification and refinement levels of the Sportage EX, two additional SX models are up next. Most notably, both SX models gain all-wheel drive capability, in addition to a number of other features, and are available with a choice between diesel and petrol power, the former being the same 130 kW, 400 Nm 2.0-litre ‘R’ turbodiesel engine. New to the Sportage range is the 2.4 GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) SX AWD model. While Kia’s familiar ‘Theta’ engine is not new, it is the first time it has been utilized in the Sportage range, which means it has also undergone a series of modifications to improve performance and fuel efficiency, with fine-tuning to its CVVT system and higher-pressure injectors, as well as the adoption of a variable induction system to more carefully manage the intake of air. The 2,4-litre engine produces 135 kW of power at 6 000 r/min and peak torque of 237 Nm at 4 000 r/min. Both SX models are paired with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission and Dynamax on-demand all-wheel drive, and feature the 7-inch colour touchscreen with integrated satellite navigation as standard. At the top of the line-up is the all-new Sportage 1.6 T-GDi GT Line, which features a number of exclusive interior and exterior design features, such as unique machine finished alloy wheels, quad LED ‘ice cube’ front fog lights, silver metal skid plates front and rear, as well as twotone interior options. It is powered by a refined version of Kia’s 1.6 turbocharged GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine, which develops 130 kW of power at 5 500 r/min, and 265 Nm of torque between 1 500 and 4 500 r/min. This engine is mated to KIA’s new seven-speed DCT, Dual Clutch Transmission.

Unlimited opening times with C-Class cabriolet
M
ercedes-Benz is launching into the open-air season with the first cabriolet based on the C-Class, thereby rounding off its range of cabriolets with a classic fabric soft top. The new cabriolet’s design interprets modern luxury with a youthful touch. Featuring plenty of high-quality details, its distinctive character is most apparent when the top is down. The cabriolet features as standard, the Aircap automatic draught stop system and optional Airscarf neck-level heating – for exceptional comfort during open-top driving 365 days a year. With its top up, the profile of the new two-door cabriolet resembles that of the CClass Coupé with virtually identical basic dimensions: with a striking front end featuring a diamond radiator grille, LED High Performance headlamps, long bonnet and high beltline. Its tightly stretched soft top with glass window transitions harmoniously into the distinctly styled rear end, which has a highly sporty look with its wide shoulders and flat LED tail lights. With a capacity of 360 litres (285 litres with the roof open), the boot is capable of holding an exceptional amount of luggage for a cabriolet, thus offering high everyday practicality. Thanks to its 15 millimetre lower suspension as standard compared with the sedan, the vehicle already gives a sporty impression with its 17-inch standard tyres, underlining the sporty character of the Cabriolet, which excels aerodynamically with a cd value of 0.28. The same dropping line is taken up by the new Mercedes-AMG C 43 4Matic Cabriolet which, however, has an even sportier look with its distinct AMG design and specific light-alloy wheels.
With the roof open, the meticulously coordinated harmony between exterior and interior design becomes apparent. High-grade details include chrome trim on Apillar and windscreen as well as a beltline moulding, which extends as far as the soft-top compartment, which it borders with a broad chrome trim. The fully automatic classic cabriolet fabric soft top comes in black in the basic variant or is optionally available with a multi-layer acoustic soft top in dark brown, dark blue, dark red or black and significantly reduces the wind/driving noise. This soft top roof can be opened and closed in less than 20 seconds and up to a speed of 50 km/h. After opening, it folds down quietly and carefully and is stored in the soft-top compartment in the boot. In terms of its shape and colour, the cover of the soft-top compartment is an integral part of the interior and is made of the same material as the beltline. Especially high-grade materials and build quality give the interior a modern feel of sportiness and lifestyle. The equipment includes heat-reflecting leather in a variety of colour shades (optional) as well as a curved switch in matt silver chrome in the centre console for opening and closing the fully automatic cabriolet soft top. Based on the Coupé, the sport seats feature an integral look with muscular side bolsters and organically integrated head restraints as well as optional Airscarf neck-level heating. The rear seats are in the form of individual seats. Their backrests offer a through-loading feature, can be split 50:50 for high everyday practicality and can be completely folded down. The interior of the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4Matic Cabriolet reinforces the consistently
dynamic bias of the performance brand with numerous specially designed details. Ideal for a committed driving style, the multifunction sports steering wheel in black leather features a flattened bottom section and red contrasting topstitching, and sits perfectly in the hand. The Cabriolet already comes as standard with a high equipment specification, which is augmented by a wide range of individualisation options. The AMG Line is available as an alternative to underline the dynamism of the Cabriolet. It differs by virtue of exterior features such as special bumpers and sills with AMG bodystyling, a diamond radiator grille with pins in chrome and 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels. In the interior, the AMG Line comes with sporty, exclusive highlights, including a multifunction sports steering wheel with flattened bottom section as well as AMG sports pedals. At the market launch an Edition 1 will be available for a limited time. With a host of perfectly com-ordinated equipment lines, it combines sportiness with lifestyle, thus perfectly fitting with the sporty-modern look of the new cabriolet. Inconspicuously integrated into the roof frame, the electric Aircap draught stop system was specially developed for Mercedes-Benz cabriolets and is coupled to an electric draught stop behind the rear seats, which reduces the interior turbulence also for the rear passengers at the press of a button. Aircap is part of the Cabriolet Comfort package, which also includes Airscarf neck-level heating for the driver and front passenger. The combination of these two systems extends the open-top season to the entire year.

The suspension on the Cabriolet, which is 15 millimetres lower in comparison with the Saloon, comes as standard with steel springs with a selective damping system. An optional sports suspension with firmer springing and damping, including the Sports Direct-Steer system, makes for even more agile handling. Powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines with ECO start/stop function and an extensive 4MATIC range make for sporty performance and driving pleasure all year round. Three petrol engines are available for the Cabriolet. The range of outputs extends from the 2-litre four-cylinder unit in the C 200 rated at 135 kW to the 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine in the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Cabriolet. The diesel model is powered by a four-cylinder engine delivering 125 kW in the C 220 d and is equipped with eco-friendly SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction) for exhaust aftertreatment. The new 9G-Tronic automatic transmission is standard on all engine variants and optional on the C 200. The model line-up at a glance: The engineers adapted the bodyshell at the front end and on the floor to meet the particular needs of the Cabriolet. Consequently, this model, features an exemplary stiff design of the kind required for high driving dynamics. There are many safety and assistance systems based on the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive concept to choose from Attention Assist with adjustable sensitivity, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness, is included as standard. Further standard equipment includes Collision Prevention Assist Plus. In addition to a visual proximity warning and
an additional audible collision warning, it includes Adaptive Brake Assist, which can help prevent collisions by boosting the brake pressure to suit the situation. When a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 200 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stationary vehicles or, in the best-case scenario, even avoiding a collision altogether. At speeds of up to 50 km/h, the system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles and is thus able to help prevent rear-end collisions at up to 40 km/h. In an accident, optimal protection is afforded by the high structural safety of the body as well as by the restraint systems, especially the comprehensive complement of airbags. The roll-over protection system is specific to the Cabriolet. It consists of two cartridges that are fully retracted behind the rear seats and therefore invisible. If a roll-over is imminent, these cartridges are pyrotechnically fired, whereupon they shoot out to provide a survival space together with the A-pillar. Specially developed for cabriolets, the climate control system responds to whether the vehicle is being driven with the roof up or down. With the roof closed, the system performs in the same way as in the Coupé. With the soft top down, the climate control system adapts by, for example, blowing warmer air onto the driver’s hands on the steering wheel and deactivating the air recirculation function. The special adjustments for open-top driving make allowance for whether cooling or heating is required and respond sensitively to the transition zones in between.

Volvo S60 Polestar now available in SA
T
he latest version of the Volvo S60 Polestar is now available in South Africa in a limited run of just 45 units. Updated for the 2017 model year, the quickest road-going Volvo ever now sports a completely new drivetrain for enhanced performance and efficiency. Following in the footsteps of the original 3.0-litre version, of which only 28 were ever imported into South Africa, the new S60 Polestar acts as a halo model in the Volvo range. Engineered by Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance arm, the new S60 Polestar shares even more of its DNA with the company’s racing cars. The new 2.0-litre Drive-E turbocharged and supercharged petrol engine has been developed alongside a 1.6-litre version of the same engine which currently powers the Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 racing cars, which are piloted by Thed Björk and Robert Dahlgren in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). Furthermore, the S60 polestar also shares its base chassis and engineering philosophy with the racing version. With 270 kW at 6 000 rpm and 470 Nm of torque available between 3 100 and 5 000 rpm, the Volvo S60 Polestar’s performance has been improved and remains impressive – 0-100 km/h is now achieved
in just 4.7 seconds and top speed remains electronically limited to 250 km/h. A vast increase in responsiveness has been achieved by the fitment of a new 8-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox which has been performance-optimised. A BorgWarner all-wheel drive system manages power output to all four wheels. Extra responsiveness can be easily unleashed, along with more volume from the sonorous twin-exit exhausts, by selecting the Sport driving mode. Coupled to launch control, which unleashes the car’s full potential with rapid acceleration and punchier gear changes, the new S60 Polestar easily exploits its new Drive-E power. The performance and output gains have been achieved thanks to a bigger turbo, new conrods, new camshafts, a larger intake and a higher-capacity fuel pump, compared to the same engine in a standard S60 T6 AWD. Naturally, an improvement in efficiency is most notable with the switch to a Drive-E powertrain. Average fuel economy on the combined cycle has been reduced to 7.8-litres per 100 km, and carbon emissions have come down to 179 g/km – a significant reduction of 22.5 per cent. On top of this new performance-optimised equipment,
Polestar has also reduced the car’s weight. The Volvo S60 Polestar is now 24 kg lighter over the front axle and 20 kg lighter in total compared to the previous model. Other new features on the car include new 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels, Polestar-calibrated electro-assisted power steering and new slotted front brake discs, measuring 371 mm in diameter. Brake callipers are by Polestar/Brembo and feature six pistons up front and four at the rear, and the suspension continues to feature adjustable Öhlins dampers for the track enthusiast who really wants to get into finer detail with their car. Most impressive however, is that the new S60 Polestar, as with the original version, is available with all available options fitted as standard. Naturally, this Volvo also features a complete arsenal of safety equipment as standard, including six airbags, ABS, EBA, BAS, HAS, ESC and IntelliSafe, which besides City Safety (AEB) includes the likes of Lane Departure Warning, Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Information System, Cross Traffic Alert, Road Sign Information and a Driver Alert system. The new Volvo S60 Polestar retails in South Africa for a recommended R749 500

Kia upgrades Cerato hatch and sedan
W
ith more than 3 million units sold globally over three generations since 2004, KIA Motors has introduced an upgraded version of its highly successful Cerato range. With a strikingly refreshed exterior design, a tangibly upgraded interior as well as a spattering of innovative new features, the enhanced KIA Cerato range is poised to continue the success of its predecessors. Manufactured at KIA’s Hwasung facility in Korea and launched in South Africa in May 2013, the current, third-generation KIA Cerato quickly established itself as a high-quality offering in the C-segment, as evidenced by the high ratings the model has received from its owners. Originally created at KIA’s USA Design Centre in Irvine, California, the updated Cerato benefits from a new, more modern look that emphasizes the dynamic muscularity of the car while retaining its
low, coupe-like roofline, sleek silhouette and cab-forward styling. For sedan and hatchback models, the front of the car gets updated black or gloss black trim for KIA’s signature ‘tiger-nose’ grille, as well as newly-designed headlamps, a new front bumper and fog-lamps, as well as a reprofiled hood. Sedan models also receive a new rear bumper and tail-light design, complemented by new, sportier alloy wheel designs. All models now feature electric folding side mirrors. The Cerato sedan’s dimensions are unchanged (4560 mm long with 2700 mm wheelbase, 1780 mm wide, and 1445 mm high), offering buyers ample interior space, high levels of practicality, and the same sporty appearance. Every model in the upgraded KIA Cerato line-up has received a range of updates to the interior to create a more premium ambience. KIA’s interior designers have, for example,
introduced new materials to the dashboard and door trims, as well as to the centre fascia and console hood, while silver and piano black trim add a more sophisticated ambience to the cabin. The gear-shift lever has also been redesigned for a higher quality look and feel, as well as improving comfort when actuating shifts. However, upgrades to the KIA Cerato go beyond visual modifications: in the automatic models, to enhance driver engagement, drivers have a new Drive Mode Select (DMS) system at their disposal with three selectable modes – Normal, Sport and Comfort – which alter the effort required to turn the steering wheel, depending on driver preference. The enhanced KIA Cerato range is still available with a choice of highly-efficient four-cylinder engines and six-speed transmissions, each channeling power through the front wheels. At the entry point, Cerato is powered by

expected of a SUV. Front and rear bumper garnishes, roof rails and 16-inch wheels are key visual elements, while the striking front grille, with its bold, chrome-embellished cross-bar, prominent Honda logo and streamlined headlights, endow the BR-V with a distinctive personality that is unmistakably Honda. Inside, the cabin’s roomy dimensions allow the introduction of a third seating row, boosting the BR-V’s occupant
seating capacity to seven. Access to all seating positions is easy and convenient, thanks to split seat rows that can be tumbled forward at the pull of a lever. The fold and tumble convenience of the middle and rear seating rows also provides exceptional versatility, allowing BR-V owners to configure the vehicle in different ways, depending on the seating capacity and luggage space required. he Toyota Auris remains a truly classy hatch, featuring a well-proportioned shape with that characteristic hatchback profile. The sloping bonnet line terminates in a prominent chrome ‘brow’, which elegantly integrates the sharp headlamp design, incorporating projector technology, with a large Toyota ellipse in the centre. The lower air-dam echoes the sweeping shape of the grille, with piano black ‘fins’ emphasising a strong horizontal line. Moving to the rear, the lamps feature a striking bitone design with clear indicator elements and distinctive dual-edged light guides, which lend the Auris a unique nocturnal visual signature. 16-inch ‘turbine-inspired’ alloy wheels shod with 205/55R16 rubber round off the exterior package. The interior of the Auris provides occupants a supremely comfortable space to interact with. The steering wheel is a delight to “behold”, featuring a leather-wrapped rim and perfectly positioned steering controls – giving the driver full command of the audio and multi-information display systems and integrated Bluetooth functionality. The multi-information display includes on-board computer readouts, relaying vehicle vitals to the driver. The Auris cabin projects a feeling of quality and solidity, which is further bolstered by
touches such as the leather gear knob and chrome detailing around the instrument cluster. The dashboard facia features a high-tech ‘carbon tread-plate’ motif, which separates the contrast stitched “leather” upper, from the spacious lower glove compartment. Rear seat passengers are catered for with a centre rear arm rest, incorporating convenient cup holders that are further complimented by large bottle holders in the door pockets – making long journeys an easy affair. On the in-car entertainment front, the Auris Xi boasts a large centrally-mounted screen with cool blue illumination, and provides users the option to choose between AM/FM, CD, USB and Bluetooth media sources. The blue illumination theme is carried throughout the interior, creating a sense of unity and serenity. One of the first things you’re likely to note about the Auris, is its quiet cabin and overall refinement. The vehicle makes light work of both city and long-distance commutes, with minimal road and wind noise intruding into the cabin resulting in an easy-to-drive feeling. The chassis offers a great balance between comfort and ‘sportiness’, with McPherson strut configuration up front, and a well-tuned torsion beam design in the rear. The ride quality in particular is excel-
lent, well damped and allows for smooth progress over a variety of surfaces. The Auris is, of course, based on the world’s most loved car – the Corolla – and is in fact badged as the Corolla hatch in some markets, endowing it with an impressive pedigree. The Auris Xi utilises Toyota’s proven 1.6 litre normally-aspirated petrol engine, which features VVTi (Variable Valve Timing intelligent) and Valvematic (electronically controlled valve lift in lieu of a conventional throttle), to promote excellent combustion efficiency and smooth, linear power delivery. The four-pot mill churns out 97 kW and 160 Nm of torque. The rev-happy nature of the engine is well suited to the sixspeed manual transmission, with a tall sixth gear promoting low fuel consumption and a
9
low cruising rpm. An interesting aspect to note with this engine is the flat fuel consumption curve. Whilst some engines may boast impressive ‘cruising’ economy figures, their fuel usage increases exponentially when driven with more ‘gusto’. Contrastingly the Auris’ 1.6-litre engine manages to deliver a good median fuel economy figure - even when pressing on. Playing the numbers game sees the combined cycle figure register at 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres. As a nod to convenience and practicality, the Auris features a spacious interior with room for five adults. The traditional hatchback profile affords the car excellent packaging, with efficient use of space. A large luggage compartment features shopping hooks conveniently placed on either side to secure
items, with a low loading-sill allowing easy movement of cargo. On the safety front, Auris comes fully decked out with Driver + Passenger + Side airbags whilst active safety is looked after by an alphabet soup of ABS+BAS+EBD. The obligatory ISOFIX seat anchor system is naturally part of the specification array. In a world where opulence, indulgence and extravagance seem to have become the new norm – the Auris Xi is a solid, yet utterly capable vehicle, rooted in the foundation of Toyota Quality, Dependability and Reliability. Offering a well-balanced package, with all of the ‘key’ features one requires, Auris proves that simple can be charming – and what’s more – fun, stylish transport needn’t break the bank.

Chevrolet revises value for money Trailblazer
C
hevrolet has come out swinging in the seven-seater SUV market once again, with a revised Trailblazer line-up that represents even better value for money and gives buyers more options in terms of drivetrains and specification. The 2017 model year range now comprises five manual and automatic versions of the rearwheel-drive 2.5-litre LT, rear and four-wheel-drive auto and manual versions of the 2.8 LTZ and a new flagship in the shape of the Z71, which is based on the LTZ 4x4. The price band is from R464 000 to R623 200 for the Z71, which pays homage to Chevrolet’s rich ‘Zee’ car performance heritage. Chevrolet Trailblazer buyers can now opt for an uprated 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine (VGT – Variable Geometry Turbo) with a six-speed automatic transmission in the LT trim level. This 132kW/440Nm combination is unique to models equipped with automatic transmissions and gives it impressive punch exactly where it is needed, irrespective of load. Combined fuel consumption for the 2.5L Automatic models is rated at 8.6 l/100 km with 226 g/km of CO2 emissions. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 11.0 seconds with a top speed limited to 180 km/h. A ‘gradient braking’ function assists drivers with maintaining speed on difficult down hills – an especially useful safety benefit when towing. A fast-acting limited slip differential is ideal in this regard too (and also when driving on low traction surfaces), and remains a feature of all models. The familiar 2.5L Duramax four-cylinder turbo-diesel (FGT – Fixed Geometry Turbo) engine continues to do duty in the 2.5 LT when matched with the six speed manual transmission. Power is rated at 120 kW, with 380 Nm of torque. Combined fuel consumption is 7.6 l/100 km, CO2 198 g/km. Accelera-
tion form 0 to 100 km/h takes 11.8 seconds with a top speed limited to 180 km/h. Top of the range models come equipped with the proven 2.8 litre Duramax Turbo-diesel (VGT) engine which boasts 144 kW, and a class leading 500 Nm of torque. No other bodyon-frame SUV on the market can match this proven powerplant when it comes to torque output, which makes tackling even the toughest on-road as well as off-road challenges a walk in the park for the Trailblazer. The combined fuel consumption figure for models with this engine is 9.5 l/100 km, CO2 is 249 g/km. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 10.4 seconds with a top speed limited to 180 km/h. Buyers have a choice of either a six speed automatic transmission with manual selection mode and grade braking or a six speed manual. LTZ models are available with optional four wheel drive with low range, which is the default set-up on the Z71. Changing between the two-high, fourhigh, and four-low drive modes is just a turn of a dial away. Brakes are equipped with four channel ABS with electronic Brake Force Distribution on all models. Brakes are 300 mm ventilated discs in front and 295 mm discs at the rear. The new Trailblazer is now fitted with an all new Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system. The new EPS system features Active Pull and Smooth Road Shake Compensation which all add to a smoother more refined driving experience. Active Pull Compensation constantly measures steering wheel torque being applied by the driver to maintain the vehicle’s path. When the software detects extra effort being used, the steering assist motor adds torque in the proper direction to prevent the driver from having to make corrections to keep the vehicle on course. The
torque assistance makes steering easier thus reducing driver fatigue and effort. Smooth Road Shake Compensation reduces steering wheel vibration caused an imbalance from the front wheels. The rotational vibration transmitted to the steering wheel is referred to as Smooth Road Shake and is a phenomenon that occurs only at highway speeds and on smooth roads. The Trailblazers power steering control module employs active controls to sense and reduce the periodic torque component applied to the steering wheel caused by front wheel imbalance. This software feature will compensate for a specific range of imbalance. If the imbalance is above a certain level, the power steering control module will disable the smooth road shake compensation software feature. The Chevrolet face has become a familiar one on South African roads and the Trailblazer’s genes are very much apparent. The trademark ‘bowtie bar’ is now wider. Upper and lower grille sections now run the full width of the nose and have a series of bolder, horizontal, slats. Maximum visibility is ensured thanks to daylight running lights - which are of the powerful light-emitting diode (LED) type in the case of the LTZ. The new bonnet has sleeker contours on the leading edge. Wider tyres (255mm width compared to 245 previously) on new 17-inch wheels are fitted to LT derivatives and give it a more purposeful stance, while LTZ versions remain on 18inch wheels with a glossy black design for the Z71. Tyre size is unchanged at 265/60. Inside, the trailblazer boasts a newly designed dashboard and front console with a contemporary upmarket feel, enhanced by soft-touch materials and contrast stitching. The Trailblazer is well suited to both the urban commute
10
as well as long cross country adventures. It has all the comfort and convenience features expected from a luxury SUV of this size including no fewer than five points for charging devices and eight cup holders. A unique feature of the Trailblazer is the provision of adjustable air conditioning for passengers in all three rows. Fold-flat third row seating is also a key defining feature of this thoughtfully-designed family SUV. The new Trailblazer offers a more hushed ambience in the cabin thanks to a revised sound-deadening package and a more premium look and feel has been achieved with more widespread use of soft-touch materials and updated satellite controls on the leather-rimmed steering wheel. Leather upholstery is fitted as standard irrespective of the model. Another unique feature available on all models fitted with automatic transmissions is Remote Vehicle Start. Luggage capacity ranges from 205 litres with all 3 rows upright, 1229 litres with the 3rd row down, to 1830 litres with the 2nd and 3rd row seats folded flat. The centrepiece of the Trailblazer’s cabin is the seven-inch touch screen. The second generation MyLink system is now Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatible which
will enable consumers to use smartphones and associated applications effortlessly and seamlessly once connected via USB. Normal Bluetooth connectively remains however, even if the device is not paired in this way. This will mean that on LT versions phone-based navigation systems such as Google Maps can be displayed on the screen, while LTZ already have a fully-integrated satellite navigation system. Safety equipment across the range still includes ABS with EBD, PBA (Panic Brake Assist), HBFA (Hydraulic Brake Fade Assist), seven airbags (including full-length curtain airbags) - the Trailblazer also picks up a driver’s knee airbag for added protection, pre-tensioning seatbelts, ISOFIX child seat anchors and front park assist. LTZ models benefit from the addition of Stabilitrak electronic stability/traction control, HDC (Hill Descent Control), and TSC (Trailer Sway Control). A rear mounted camera parking assistance system with cross traffic alert is also fitted. Technology added to LTZ models for the 2017 model year are forward collision alert, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert and tyre pressure monitoring; giving it one of the most comprehensive driver aid packages available at this level.

Porsche 911 GT3 Cup ready to race
B
oasting a completely redeveloped drive, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup will take to the starting line on the world’s race tracks from 2017. The rear of the world’s most-produced GT racing car now houses a 4-litre, six-cylinder flat engine for even more drive. Thanks to thoroughbred motorsport technology, the compact engine with direct fuel injection delivers peak performance of 485 hp (357 kW). A range of innovative details also improve efficiency in addition to engine performance, ensuring even better durability of the naturally aspirated engine in racing mode and reduced maintenance costs. A valve drive with rigidly mounted rocker arms and a central oil feed is being used for the very first time. What’s more, an integrated oil cen-trifuge is used to optimise oil defoaming in the engine. A crankshaft with significantly increased rigidity has also been installed. A new front apron and a new rear end improve the downforce of the new 911 GT3 Cup and therefore enhance traction and performance. The prominent 184-centimetre wide rear wing has been retained from the previous model, whilst wheel dimensions are also unchanged: One-piece 18-inch racing rims with a central locking mechanism are combined
with 270-millimetre Michelin racing slicks on the front axle, and a 310-millimetre tread on the rear axle. The intelligent aluminium-steel composite construction ensures maximum rigidity and a lightweight body. Weighing in at just 1200 kilograms, the new 911 GT3 Cup is ready to race. The engineers have also once again focused specifically on driver safety during development. The driver is protected by a solid safety cage and an innovative, bucket-style racing seat that is moulded particularly heavily around the head and shoulder area. The enlarged rescue hatch in the roof, in line with the latest FIA standard, makes it easier to provide initial treatment and recovery following an accident. Porsche manufactures the 911 GT3 Cup on the same production line as the 911 road car in its plant at Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. The basic race tuning is performed at the Weissach motorsport centre, where vehicles are also thoroughly tested by a professional race driver prior to delivery to the customer. Some 3031 units of the 911 GT3 Cup have been built in the 996, 997 and 991 model lines since 1998, making the Stuttgart based manufacturer’s cup racing car the most-produced and most-sold GT racing model in the world.
The new 911 GT3 Cup will be used in the 2017 race season, initially exclusively in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, which is held alongside the Formula 1 races, and in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, as
12
well as in North America. As of 2018, the car will also be available for the other brand cups. In total, Porsche is organising 20 of these race series for customer teams around the world. The 911 GT3 Cup is now avail-
able for order via the Porsche Motorsport department in Weissach to customers participating in a Porsche race series, including the 2017/18 winter season GT3 Challenge Cup Middle East.

BMW Motorrad expand heritage lineup
T
he new BMW R nineT Racer and R nineT Pure provide a purist roadster feeling and athletic dynamic performance based on classic concepts. For a lot of motorcycle fans, less is very often more – which is why they opt for “pure motorcycling” and the kind of motorbike that credibly and authentically embodies this approach. BMW Motorrad responded to this trend with the R nineT in 2013 – a model that has enjoyed ongoing success and popularity ever since. This was a good reason for the BMW Motorrad team to follow up with the R nineT Scrambler in 2015, another fascinating specimen of classic motorcycle design which once again received enthusiastic feedback. Motivated by this positive response, BMW Motorrad have unveiled the R nine T Racer and R nineT Pure – two motorcycles that add two exciting new facets to the BMW Motorrad Heritage world of experience: the roadster reduced to the essentials and the classic, old-school half-faired sports motorcycle. These are both concepts that were popular in the 1960s and 1970s and continue to inspire nostalgia among many motorcycle enthusiasts to this day. Both the new BMW Heritage models feature the potent, air/ oil-cooled boxer engine with a capacity of 1 170 cc and an output of 81 kW (110 hp) combined with a 6-speed transmission. They are both designed to meet the requirements of
the EU4 pollutant class. The design of the exhaust system in stainless steel with the rear silencer positioned on the left reflects classic styling. On the suspension side, the R nineT Racer and R nineT Pure make use of the modular steel tubular space frame familiar from the R nineT Scrambler consisting of the three components front main frame, rear main frame and removable passenger frame. The latter provides flexibility to change the appearance and character of the two BMW boxer models according to preference, for example by adding different seats from the range of original BMW Motorrad accessories. Front wheel control is taken care of by a conventional telescopic fork while at the rear the BMW Paralever comes into use in conjunction with a monoshock. The five-spoke light alloy cast wheels in the sizes 3.5 x 17” at the front and 5.5 x 17” at the rear have tyres in the dimensions 120/70 ZR 17 and 180/55 ZR 17 respectively. Four-piston brake calipers at the front along with floating brake discs with a diameter of 320 millimetres and ABS ensure secure deceleration. In order to prevent the rear wheel from spinning on slippery roads, there is an ASC (Automatic Stability Control) available as an option. Wire-spoked wheels are an option that further emphasise the classic appearance. The R nineT Pure embodies the essence of the purist,
classic roadster – authentically designed, without frills and reduced to the absolute essentials. The design draws on a blend of both classic and modern stylistic elements of motorcycle construction combined with high-end details such as footrests and fork bridges in forged aluminium with a clear anodised finish. The fuel tank and front mudguard of the BMW R nineT Pure are finished Catalano Grey non-metallic. In combination with black for the suspension and drivetrain, this colour emphasises the purist character of the R nineT Pure as a roadster for dynamic, classic riding pleasure on country roads. The R nineT Racer deliberately arouses memories of the sports motorcycles popular in the early 1970s. Crouched, compact and elongated, it conveys a sense of old-school sporty aspiration with its strikingly short half-fairing, hump seat, stub handlebars and set-back footrests, combining this overall impression with modern technology. In Lightwhite non-metallic combined with decor that is reminiscent of past BMW Motorsport colours, the R nineT Racer is particularly light and athletic in appearance. The frame finished in Aluminium Silver prominently presents an architectural contrast with the black drivetrain, underscoring the standing of the R nineT Racer as an old-school sports motorcycle designed for dynamic riding fun on winding roads.

70 years of selling the best
A
ndy Reid loves beautiful things. He admires quality and he’s not afraid to admit it. He’s also brutally honest, fearlessly assertive and, on most days, can be seen zipping through Joburg traffic on his shined-to-perfection grey Vespa. More than most managing directors, he lives his brand. And so he should, after bravely going where no Scotsman had gone before and single-handedly introducing the world’s most iconic two-wheeler to the South African market. Now that you’ve heard it, you’ve seen more Vespas on SA roads, haven’t you? You’d be right. Vespa is celebrating their international 70th birthday this month but in Mzanzi, they’re just a few years into their meteoric rise in popularity. To celebrate 70 years of style, Reid takes a zip down memory lane: Q: Anyone who knows you, knows you’re a master salesman. What’s your business background? A: I’m a Scotsman. I’m
stubborn. And I can’t resist a challenge. After moving to SA, I started my own chemical analysis equipment business, Swiss Lab, at the age of 25. I sold it to the Ellerine Brothers in 2001 and retired at 40. But I was bored with retirement and began looking for a new challenge. I fell in love with Vespa while travelling Europe and after returning to South Africa, wanted to buy one – and subsequently realised modern Vespas weren’t available here. So I hopped on a plane, headed for Piaggio headquarters in Pontedera, Italy, to secure exclusive distribution rights for Vespa in Southern Africa. In 2002, I founded Vespa South Africa. I’m the majority shareholder and MD of Vespa SA, with six retail outlets and sixty staff members across the country. I’m actively involved in sales and marketing, and have a passion for customer interaction. I believe in empowering my staff without limits, and enjoy mentoring and develop-
ing talent Q: Vespa has been the stylish mode of transport for Italians for decades. What do you think it is about the brand that stands out? A: The original Vespa was designed and manufactured by Piaggio (who originally manufactured aircraft and trains during World War II). After the war was over and Europe was devastated by the effects of the war and economically in the worst depression in history, the founders at Piaggio shifted their focus to building Europe up again. So they set out to design the Vespa as an affordable mode of transport to get Europe moving and working again. In 1946, the first Vespa was born and 70 years later Vespa is still an icon for similar yet modern ideologies. It gives you agility and freedom. It looks amazing. It’s conscious of your budget and the environment. And it’s just downright practical. Q: How did you see Vespa being accepted into the South African market and what was
the reason to bring it into this territory? A: I saw a gap. Vespa wasn’t available in South Africa and I set out to fill the gap. Initially, uptake was slow. Vespas are fully imported, high quality, luxury vehicles with a premium price tag. Also, the landscape in South Africa is unique. Things are more spread out, there are more cars travelling at high speeds and safety is a concern. With years of persistence, deep strategic marketing and on-going education, consumers have become more informed about the brand and its unique features. The ever-increasing challenge of congestion has also helped. Locally, Vespa has excellent brand equity and is known for quality engineering, safety, fuel saving and low emissions, commuting and parking convenience and longevity. Q: How has Vespa performed in South Africa? A: The Vespa population on our roads is increasing year on year. At times we can’t keep
up with the demand. When we bring in a limited edition model, such as the Emporio Armani colab edition, customers fight over the bikes. We’ve gone from one showroom to six and have plans for many more. Most South Africans know the brand now and most adults want one (even if they don’t admit it to their spouses). Q: Italian design is celebrated the world over. What about Italian design makes it the standard for you? A: For a long time, Italians have been renowned for being leaders in industrial, fashion, furniture and architectural design. I think Italian design is discernible by its minimal form, always as important as function. I think Italians exalt in beauty that’s stripped down and pure with quality at its core. Italians would rather own a few quality items than lots of cheap stuff. And when it comes to Vespa, they’ve discovered the alchemy of style, beauty, ergonomics, engineering, technology, quality and safety. Q: What’s been your career highlight so far? A: Growing the Vespa population from zero to seeing Vespas in most South African cityscapes, in just under a decade. And it’s only going to become a bigger force as it reaches its tipping point. Already more South African commuters want to enjoy the style, freedom and pure enjoyment of hopping on a Vespa. Q: What’s next for Andy Reid and Vespa SA? A: I want to change the way South Africans commute. I want to change policy. I want to make Vespas ubiquitous, with a showroom on every corner, special bike lanes for enhanced safety, and incentives for conscious commuters who switch from gas guzzling cars to quiet, safe and efficient two-wheels. I want to see more Vespas on the roads than cars. Think it’s impossible? Watch this space.

Honda goes lighter and faster with CBR
I
n 1992 something new stunned the motorcycling world. Radical thinking from Honda focused on the ratio between power and weight and the CBR900RR Fireblade arrived fully formed at the perfect balance point between the two. Physically smaller and much more agile than the larger capacity competition, its four-cylinder engine also packed real punch. The Fireblade reset expectations of just what an open-class sports bike should be, and what it could do in an era when outright horsepower and straight-line speed had long held centre stage. Over the following 25 years the Fireblade has seen many changes and been through many evolutions – each underpinned by the concept of Total Control. Each generation has built on the legacy of the original Fireblade, providing a superbly balanced package that works incredibly well on track and, even more importantly, is both exhilarating and uniquely rewarding to ride out on the open road. The fact the Fireblade is so good when actually raced on real roads – at the Isle of Man TT, for instance, where it is the most successful 1000cc machine ever with 23 wins to its name – is testament to its speed, handling and ability to perform in the most testing and extreme of ‘real world’ conditions.
2017, and the 25th anniversary of the Fireblade sees the introduction of a new CBR1000RR Fireblade SP. Honda’s engineers have remained true to the first principles of the original project – power to weight – with the focus on cornering, acceleration and braking. Thus the 17YM Fireblade SP is significantly lighter than the outgoing model, makes more power and is fully loaded with a cutting edge electronics package that underpins the project’s development concept of Next Stage Total Control. It is everything that a Fireblade should be, and more. Three factors are key to the essence of the new Fireblade SP; less weight, more power and electronics to help the rider wherever and however they’re riding. The new electronic control system provides constant, selectable and fine-tunable rider support. Central to the system is the 5-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), which measures exactly what the machine is doing, in every plane. It works the Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) that precisely manages rear wheel traction via the FI-ECU and Throttle By Wire (TBW). The new ABS (also managed by the IMU) offers Rear Lift Control (RLC) and the ability for hard, safe trail braking into corners. Any difference measured between the front and rear wheel
speeds engages Wheelie Control, depending on settings. It also works with the Ohlins Objective Based Tuning Interface to adjust both the compression and rebound damping force of the semi-active Öhlins Electronic Control (S-EC) front fork and rear shock. For the rider this means access to a whole new level of handling ability, with suspension reaction – whether working through pre-sets or manual input – that delivers exactly the right amount of control in every situation. It functions as well on the road as it does the track, and for Honda a new era begins. At the same time as the S-EC is working the suspension, the Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) is precisely managing rear wheel traction through the IMU, FI-ECU and Throttle By Wire (TBW). It also delivers a Wheelie Control function. Three standard display modes – Street, Circuit and Mechanic – provide all the information required for the rider relevant to the type of riding. The information displayed can be fine-tuned and adjusted while riding by using the left hand switch gear and TFT liquid crystal display, just as on the RC213V-S, Honda’s road going version of its RC213V MotoGP machine. While the electronic control is very much a new departure for the Fireblade, the combination of the other two factors
15
draws faithfully on the philosophy of the original 1992 machine: the optimal balance of power and weight. The engine revs harder and higher, with a much higher compression ratio and revised cam timing, and uses the TBW (a first for an inline four-cylinder Honda) and Acceleration Position Sensor (APS) which have been inspired by the technology developed for the RC213V-S Bottom end torque and power are improved, with a significant increase in top-end power – up 8kW to 141kW @13,000rpm and 3 modes of engine output character can be chosen from. A Quickshifter is fitted as standard, as is Downshift Assist (with autoblipper) and new assist slipper clutch Thanks to the use of magnesium and careful assessment and lightening of individual parts the engine also carries 2kg less. The new titanium exhaust muffler saves further weight and aids mass central-
isation, as does the titanium petrol tank. Overall the Fireblade SP is 15kg lighter than the outgoing model, with a wet weight of 195kg. The twin-spar aluminium frame’s rigidity balance has been finely adjusted, and the swingarm is stiffer to match. A new rear subframe is lighter as are the redesigned wheels, while Brembo monobloc four-piston front brake calipers use high-performance trackready brake pads. The Fireblade SP ’s bodywork outlines an aggressive, functional minimalism, and the machine is slimmer and much more compact with a single seat unit fitted as standard. All lighting is LED and the stunning Tri-Colour paintwork – on a red base – harks back to Honda racing history. Honda Motor Southern Africa will introduce the CBR1000RR Fireblade SP to their line up in the first quarter of 2017.
