Benjamin Chiri, Associate Principal, Mounds View High School

Ben is a proud member of the Mounds View community, with three children of his own in the school district and a passion for bringing people together After 13 years as a Biology teacher in Minneapolis, Ben started as a school administrator at Highview Middle School and is now in his third year at Mounds View High School. Ben works closely with the Math, Science, and Career & Tech Ed Departments and is the lead on building operations In his free time, Ben enjoys reading, mountain biking, yard work, and exploring places with his family

Gretchen has been part of the Mounds View District for the past 25 years She started as a physical education and health teacher at Mounds View High School, moved to the district office in the curriculum and instruction department and is now in her second year as Associate Principal. Gretchen works closely with English, Social Studies, Fine Arts, Physical Education and Health and is the lead on student registration and scheduling. In her free time, Gretchen enjoys spending time with her family, waterskiing, and finding time to be outside

Matt is a highly skilled and passionate educator. He began his career with Mounds View Schools in 2012 as a math teacher at Irondale High School During his time at Irondale, Matt built positive relationships with students as both a teacher and a coach While in his first year at Mounds View as the Admin Intern, Matt works directly with students to promote consistent attendance, has helped to implement the new digital hall pass system, and implementing increased structures to ReFLECT days. Matt lives in Ham Lake with his wife Christina and their sons Rocco and Enzo In his free time, Matt enjoys spending time with his family at the cabin, watching Twins games, and tending to his garden in the summer.

Meet Ms. Hendrickson

Hello, my name is Madison Hendrickson and I am the new Career & College Coordinator at Mounds View High School! I grew up right in this community, going to St. Anthony Village High School and graduating from Bethel University I love working with high school students and my experience has evolved as I have worked in different high schools in the area, all with the mission to help students be the best version of themselves and support them in achieving their goals When I'm not at work, you can find me coaching girls and boys swim and dive at St. Anthony Village High School, attending one of my family member's sporting events, or going for a long run. I am so excited as we work to refresh and revamp our Career & College Center, striving to provide more opportunities and assistance for students as they discover different career pathways, search for colleges, learn how to apply for scholarships and financial aid, and have valuable experiences with career and college professionals Our goal is to reach out to as many students as we can, advocating for them as they reach for their post-secondary dreams and aspirations.

As seniors determine what is next for them after graduation, college, and university applications remain open They are encouraged to complete applications as soon as possible Though many colleges and universities continue to accept applications, many had deadlines of March 1. Mustangs to Mention is a program created to recognize positive student behavior It is an opportunity for staff to nominate students who are displaying one or more traits from the 12 Habits of Mind for PostSecondary Success. DECA, INC. RECOGNIZES MV DECA STORE - GOLD-LEVEL HONORS

The Mounds View DECA store has earned outstanding international achievement honors at the highest gold standard level for its work in the student-run school-based retail enterprise (SBE). The MV DECA store is one of 613 schools worldwide and one of 29 schools in the state to receive this award.

The honors go to managers Garima Khatiwada and Gillian Anderson, who lead and train their 30 peers in our DECA chapter in-store operations. The Snack Shack launched this year. It’s a food operation run by Jizelle Lobley and Thanishka Shetty, which is 100% healthy food compliant

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD - HEADING TO NATIONALS!

The Science Olympiad Team is the 2023 Minnesota State Tournament Champions! Next up is the National Tournament at Wichita State University in May

Team competition is patterned after track tournaments with challenging and motivational events ranging from earth science through physics Events range from hands-on labs to student built machines, from outdoor events to paper and pencil tests. There is also a balance between events requiring scientific knowledge and understanding, and others requiring process and application skills.

2022 CONGRESSIONAL APP CHALLENGE

Congratulations to John Liu who took 3rd place in the 2022 Congressional App Challenge with MiniTax, his “educational app to help teens or first-time taxpayers understand the importance and function of taxes in our society "

The Congressional App Challenge is a nationwide STEAM competition where students create an application or “ app ” for desktop/PC, web, tablet, mobile, or other devices Fourth Congressional District middle and high school students are encouraged to enter next year ’ s competition by submitting an app of their own creation by late October 2023

Zali Akiba presented at the international Global Health Leaders Conference, which is a premier global health education program led by Johns Hopkins University students and faculty; emerging global health leaders in grades 9-12 from around the world learn from one another and some of the world’s leaders in global health and medicine. “Zali was admitted into this highly selective program and chosen to present. YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT

Since 1946, students across our region have participated in Youth in Government (YIG), an immersive four days that includes focused discussions on current issues, a wide variety of social events, engaging evening activities, time for small-group reflection, and hands-on leadership development.

The program starts in late fall when students in grades 8-12 join or form a YIG delegation which will hold meetings for their group leading up to the conference High School students will choose to serve as legislators, judges, attorneys, lobbyists, media representatives, or cabinet members

In November, delegates from all over the state join an online training called LAUNCH to prepare for the conference. In January, delegations from all over the state of Minnesota and Western Wisconsin engaged in the 69th Youth in Government event! These 2023 elected officials are from Mounds View:

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY

The Brooker Edmond VFW Club Post 724 representative Terry Hoye presented local awards to Magnolia Taylor (1st), Rosie Floeder (2nd) and John Liu (3rd) for the student submissions to the Voice of Democracy scholarship program Students wrote essays on the topic "Why is the Veteran Important?" and read them as part of the competition. Magnolia Taylor also received honorable mention in the 4th District competition, which comprises VFW Posts in Ramsey County and part of Washington County. All students grades 9-12 are eligible to submit an entry; the new topic will come out in Spring 2023 and entries will be due at the end of October.

In 2022, we emerged victorious against Stillwater after a decade-long hiatus, crowning us 4AA True Team Section and Section champs. This season, although we were unable to defeat the Ponies in a dual meet and at True Team, we managed to secure a narrow win against them at Sections, making us back-to-back Section champions, proving last year was not just a fluke

The State team consisted of Josh Wallin in 100 Backstroke, Justin Wang in 100 Breaststroke, the 200 Medley Relay team of Wallin, Nathan Hare, Steven Zhou, and Wang, the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Wang, Theo Gafencu, Danny Bai, and Hare, and the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Bai, Gafencu, Tyler Quattrin and Wallin. At State finals, Wallin placed 3rd in the 100 Backstroke, setting a new school record of 50.12. Wang placed 12th in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:00.32. The 200 Medley Relay placed 5th and broke a 16-year school record with a time of 1:35 88, and the 200 Freestyle Relay placed 14th with a time of 1:28 95

Overall, our final dual meet record was 7-2 (win against every team except East Ridge and Stillwater), we placed second at True Team Sections, first at Sections, and 15th at State.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Our MVI Girls Hockey 22-23 season was definitely one to remember! This being the first year Mounds View and Irondale combined at the highschool level, we had our ups and downs, but overcame them through the amazing memories and relationships that were built. We had some tough competition, but managed to pull through in some close games We traveled up to Warroad for some preseason scrimmages, hosted the Herb Brooks Christmas Tournament, and attended a Wild game which were a few of our favorite memories.

Our team earned the Section 5AA Team Academic Champion award with a 3 907 unweighted GPA A few individuals were also highlighted this year: Sarah Johnson, Ellie Fagerlee, and Maddie Tinkle received all conference honorable mention awards, Jen Rupp and Lauren Balllinger received all conference awards, and Jen also got the Hobey Baker award for great sportsmanship. We had a great year and are already counting down the days until next season!

BOYS HOCKEY

The Mounds View Boys Hockey season was nothing less than a battle Facing the adversity of having 6 players on Varsity injured throughout the duration of the season with another 4 players on JuniorVarsity, truly tested the Mustangs. Despite all these setbacks, the boys kept pushing through and had a good season winning some very tough games. The boys truly loved every time they stepped onto the ice together and always worked their hardest

On and off the ice they created an amazing culture that brought many players to individual success as well as success for the team.

GYMNASTICS

My name is Avery Dox, and I am a junior captain of the MVI gymnastics team. I want to start by highlighting our one and only senior, Kelsey O'Connell; she was the team's other captain this year. She was a fantastic leader on the team and did a good job leading the team by herself while I was out for a couple of surgeries in the middle of the season She always had a positive attitude and a smile on her face She elegantly carried herself after a torn ACL and a bad ankle sprain She was determined to come back and compete, and she did - not only did she compete, but also made it to state in the two events she competed in this season.

We had a fun season with many younger team members and new faces We all had such a good bond, and there was no drama Gymnastics is such a demanding sport on your body, but we were all able to help each other through it and work hard to get to our goals.

Overall, the season was GREAT, I wish I could have competed and been there more, but there is still next year, and I am so excited!

DANCE

Our season started off by welcoming 15 new dancers and coaches to our team We loved getting to know all the new dancers and coaches at our practices, competitions, and team bonding events! The first highlight of our season was performing our dances at the first competition with the b-squad, JV, and varsity teams. Some more fun moments of the season include, our Conference championships, the Winterfest competition that we host every year, our holiday party at Pinz with bowling and laser tag, and Sections week! We had a fun time dressing up in themes at school the week leading up to our Sections competition Four of our varsity dancers were chosen to be on the 2023 All-State dance team and represent the top dancers in the state! The b-squad, JV, and varsity teams ended with our strongest performances at Winterfest and Sections. With hard work, dedication, and positive mindsets, we made individual improvements and grew together as a team!

ALPINE

The boys consistently placed in the middle of the pack for most of our 4 conference races. The girls weren’t far behind, usually placing 6th or 7th out of the 10 teams in our section. As we closed off the end of our regular season, we selected our roster of 6 racers and 2 alternates for each of the boys and the girl teams to ski at their respective section race The boys' team placed 13th out of 17 teams at the section meet, and the girls placed 16th out of 18th. That wasn’t the end for everyone, Irondale’s Anthony Petkov moved onto state after an impressive showing at sections.

After the Alpine season officially ended with our banquet, we had two recruitment nights for the Ski Club kids The recruitment nights were a success, and we got a lot of people to come and try the sport out. The kids that came to try out the sport ranged in age from 5th grade to 11th grade.

The Mounds View Nordic Team had a strong 2022-2023 season The Captains for the season were Alana Schmitzer, Brynn Mills, Claire Anderson, Levi Hammerbeck, and Sam Notch. Our first big meet in the early season was the Mesabi Ski invite . We competed there against 57 other teams The girls team placed 10th and the boys placed 26th We also had many other races throughout the season in which we could see the team progress and improve Each race was a great opportunity to see hard work pay off. Later in the season the girls team placed 3rd at Conference and the boys team moved up two spots to place 4th! We had 9 All Conference skiers and 6 Honorable Mention skiers

The Girls sprint team of Brynn Mills and Margot Derosier took the title of Conference Champs and proceeded to compete at Sections and State. At Sections, the boys sprint team of Levi Hammerbeck and Owen Kalmes won Sections and competed at State placing 6th. We had two pursuit skiers, Linnea Ousdigian and Claire Sabby complete at state and place 32nd and 69th respectively Both of the girls and boys teams received the Gold Academic Award for having an average unweighted GPA of 3.91 and 3.78. Great job to all of our skiers this season!!

GIRLS BASKETBALL

This girl's basketball season was centered around the idea of being “All-In,” which consisted of being a role model both on the court and in the classroom The team’s 6 returning seniors made for a deep bench with countless threats. As the season progressed, history was made time and time again. Bria Stenstrom, a junior captain, put up 42 points at home against Stillwater, tying the single-game points record set over 20 years ago

At the end of the season, the JV/Varsity team earned a home section tournament game by securing the 4 seed, another impressive accomplishment earned for the first time in many years During this quarterfinal game against Spring Lake Park, the Lady Mustangs rallied to secure a narrow 74-70 victory over the Panthers, with Stenstrom scoring her 1000th career point. Four players received conference recognition, with Bria Stenstrom and Yazzy Abed receiving All-Conference awards, while Jessica Eischens and Julia Peterson received All-Conference Honorable Mention awards

BOYS BASKETBALL

The season started off very hot in non-conference play and we won our first seven games to make us 7-0. In our first real test of the year we lost to Stillwater to make us 7-1. At this point in the season the schedule got tougher and we knew we won't be rolling to easy wins anymore We won the following game on game winning free throws from Joey Fretheim at Roseville After that, we added some wins and a loss or two, but the fun began when we started playing teams that had already beat us. This time with home court advantage and a better game plan, we beat both Stillwater and Cretin, We ended our regular season with 16 wins and 10 losses.

The highlights of this season for us have been our game against Spring Lake Park where Colby Deluce hit a game winner at the buzzer, our games against Fridley and Chisago where we won by 20 points at least and the whole jv team got in the game, and our senior night we had a great comeback against Cretin in the second half to win

WRESTLING

This year ' s season was record breaking! We broke the all season dual wins record by ending the season with 31 wins, breaking the previous record, 29 wins Not only did the team break records, we sent 9 guys to the state tournament individually, 5 of which placed in the top 4; shattering the previous record of only 3 state placers. Overall the season was filled with infinitely more ups than downs, graduating only one varsity senior, Mounds View wrestling isn't done yet- not even close.

MV THEATRE: SHAKESPEARE

Last month, Mounds View High School’s Shakespeare club put on their fantastical rendition of King Lear: Twisted Fairytale The show is completely student directed and produced, making it a highlight for all participants in the theater department. King Lear is a story about how the King, Lear, (Played by Jesse Olhoft 12th) divides his kingdom among his 3 daughters and the political tribulations that accompany it Unable to believe that his beloved daughters are betraying him, Lear slowly goes insane He flees his daughters’ houses to wander and is accompanied by his Fool (Ellie Dostal Dauer 10th) and Kent (Josh Johnson 11th), a loyal nobleman in disguise.

“Our show featured many colorful sets and costumes, really bringing the Twisted Fairytale theme to the stage With the work of the directors (Lydia Hornski 12th and Jack Nitti 12th), set designers (Cora Manrodt 12th and Lua Missaghi 12th), and costumes (Morgan Ryals 12th and Elena Miller 11th) our team was able to build a show from the ground up As well as lights and sound (Christian Nelson 12th and Charlie Smith 12th) creating the right atmosphere for the live show A huge thanks goes out to all of the students involved as well as our Manager (Soledad Orstad 12th) and our adviser (Matthew van Bruggen). We are very excited for what the team will put together next year We know that it will be amazing and something for all to look forward to!”

“When I got to high school, it was my time to start fresh and create a name for myself.” Senior Destiny Beulangh is one of Mounds View High School’s most influential leaders and scholars In her words, it wasn’t always that way. “I am most proud that I survived, and that I was able to make a big turn around. I used to get bullied a lot, and I used to retaliate and got in trouble for it Now I am able to stand up for myself the proper way and also help make change along the way. ” Although she had a rough time during middle school, Destiny’s family was continuously there for her, helping her grow and develop into a passionate and robust young woman.

As a freshman, Destiny was pretty quiet. Until she wasn’t, she found her voice at Mounds View. First, through music, initially as a student in orchestra, but more prominently as a singer. On numerous occasions, Destiny has brought down the house with her rendition of the National Anthem, and most recently, she performed for our Black History Month Showcase. Her voice, though, has most impressively been used to lead others.

The Ralph Reeder Food Shelf and Community Resource Center is a Community Education Program of the Mounds View Public School District that was established in 1982 We provide food, basic needs and connections to other services to any school district family as well as all low income, food insecure individuals and families living within the Mounds View Public School District attendance area or Ramsey County St. Anthony. Our service area includes the cities of New Brighton, Mounds View, Shoreview, Arden Hills, North Oaks, Roseville and Ramsey County St Anthony

For 41 years, Minnesota FoodShare has worked to address food insecurity and poverty by engaging communities throughout the state via education and state and federal advocacy efforts Minnesota FoodShare also provides resources to food shelves and food distribution programs across the state through the annual March Campaign

SYDNEY BRODT '16

Sydney Brodt, 2019 World Champion, signed a one-year deal to play pro hockey with the MN Whitecaps for year 2022-23 season. “I want to continue to grow the women ' s game in my home state, Minnesota,” said Brodt “I'm super excited to be a part of their long-standing tradition and want to help bring the Isobel Cup back to Minnesota!” Brodt has an abundance of experience at both the collegiate and professional level. Most recently, Brodt played in Europe in the SDHL for Linköping HC, where she served as an assistant captain. During 2021-22 competition, the 5’6” forward put up 56 points (29G, 27A) over 36 games, averaging 1 55 points-per-game during the regular season

Mounds View district alumnus Xavier Zengue was selected No. 27 overall by the Columbus Crew in the MLS SuperDraft. The defender joins the Black & Gold from the University of Dayton.
