OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE FROM
WINTER 2013
Pelmo e Pelmetto Dolomites
The Dolomites, a heritage of natural beauty for all humanity, a true paradise of unpredictable nature, of steep vertical lines, of people 2
hardened by the challenge of confronting this environment that is harsh but rich with opportunity. Karpos was born at the foot of these mountains, not to conquer but to share them, to accompany and to
support all who, driven by their passion, want to climb a bit higher and look beyond the horizon.

DYNAMIC PROTECTION
Protection. A term that means many important things to those who go out in winter conditions in pursuit of challenging personal goals 4
or just to spend a few pleasant hours in contact with sleeping— though not to be underestimated—nature. A term that can
also be translated as help, security, assistance, reliability, warmth, reassurance, comfort…

Manaslu - Camp Three
The rhythmic patter of the snow on the outer fabric of the tent—light, nearly imperceptible—almost puts me to sleep. Then it stops. That’s not a good sign. A few minutes pass, and my half-asleep breathing is heavy, insistent. Then all of a sudden I wake up, almost suffocated, and 6
quickly search for an opening in the dark. I brush the accumulated snow off the tent as best I can, looking for an opening to let in some air, some oxygen—already in short supply at this altitude above 6,000 meters. The snow piles up quickly. The tents are practically buried,
with us inside them. The night has just begun and it will be long, but we can’t do anything. We are imprisoned in a protective cocoon that is tightening minute by minute, immersed in a frozen darkness that is anything but reassuring. After what seems like forever, the light
slowly begins to gain the edge. A new day has arrived and we begin to fight at last—whether to climb or to descend doesn’t matter, but we can fight…again. (Maurizio Giordani) Photo: Maurizio Giordani

Iceland
Iceland is a land of strong emotions—and strong contrasts in the landscape: glaciers that sink into the grass and meadows that dive into the sea, brilliant pasturelands and black sands that compete over vast stretches twisted and ravaged by the restless bowels of the earth. Daniela and I crossed its beating heart—the Vatnajökull, one of the largest glaciers on the continent—on our way from Jökulheimar to Snaefell via Grímsvöten, the fuming volcano that devastates the 8
land and the air all the way to the sea whenever it reawakens. It’s a hidden giant that we smell in the air and whose presence we feel many days before we see it. We identify the immense caldera from a distance due to the column of steam that, thanks to the whims of the wind, sometimes hits us and makes us feel like we’re entering into an odd Turkish bath scented with sulfur from hell. When we reach the summit, it’s almost evening, and in front of our eyes opens
a deep expanse that is breathing and puffing. We watch the sun as it moves around us; the long rays advance slowly, clothing the cold black immobile lava with a warm veil. We enjoy the embrace of this red warmth. We are tired and should sleep, but our eyes don’t want to close. Tomorrow, the absolute white will return. We’ll stay here tonight, with our small tent pitched on the slopes of this hot, living essence.
We’re about halfway through our trip. In a few days it will be the giant Snaefell, this one dormant, to show us the way. This evening, though, we want to breathe with the rhythm of the volcano. (Antonella Giacomini) Photo: Antonella Giacomini

Climbing Muztagh Ata
It wasn’t the highest mountain I’ve climbed, or the most difficult, but I often think back with great nostalgia on that trip to Asia. Crossing Kunjerab Pass (4,800 meters) we leave Pakistan, where we have just finished an acclimating trek near Nanga Parbat, and enter the Chinese region of Xinjiang. Our objective: to try to summit Muztagh Ata, at 7,546 meters, with our skis. Assisted by camels to transport our supplies, we arrive at base camp, at 4,400 meters of elevation. The landscape is lunar. If I didn’t know we were near the mountains, it would seem like we were walking in the desert. It’s the start of the season. Aside from a small Swiss group, we are the 28
only mountaineers on the mountain. It’s a beautiful feeling, making first tracks in virgin snow, with no one ahead. During the first week, we set up camp one and leave some supplies near camp two, at 6,150 meters. The weather is changeable, and clear skies alternate with sudden wind and snowstorms, which put our good mood to the test. June is here and it’s time to attempt the summit. Having passed an area of deep crevasses, we spend the first night above 6,000 meters. The next day we climb to 6,800 meters, to camp three, where we pitch our tents under heavy snowfall. I feel the weight of the backpack, full of necessities, but in our tents we try to recover the energy we’ve expended, even though our appetites are diminished due to the
elevation. During the night the thermometer in the tent shows 20 degrees below zero. It feels like sleeping in a freezer. A strong wind blows until after dawn, and we hear the constant tap of the snow on our tent. I feel sick at the thought of having to go outside, but then, magically, everything is silent! It seems like an invitation to tackle the final stage awaiting us. There’s not a cloud in the sky. As soon as I leave the tent, after heating my boots with the help of the stove, the cold is bearable. We set out. With a slow and constant pace, counting our breaths and our steps, we climb above 7,000 meters. My gaze follows the rhythmic movement of the skis, while ahead of me, in the absolute white, only a light track
left by Maurizio in the wind-hardened snow indicates which way to go. The temperature rises with the sun, and with no wind it’s perfect. The gradient becomes less steep…and below us is a sea of clouds! Time passes slowly, and I breathe heavily due to the lack of oxygen. It doesn’t seem possible when, raising my eyes to the horizon, the white changes to blue. We’re at the summit! We quietly enjoy the peaceful feeling of being so high, in front of an infinite horizon, without the worry of a dangerous descent in bad weather. On skis it will be a fun, fast descent down the inviting slopes. (Nancy Paoletto) Photo: Maurizio Giordani 29
From the Chilean fjords toward the Hielo Continental Sur
Dawn is approaching, and a leaden sky—no longer full of stars— greets us. Low, black and fast-moving clouds evoke Patagonia, the Patagonia that I remember and recognize: the gloomy but clear atmosphere, the dark but lively blue of the water, the bright green of the vegetation. Sleepily, we hurry to load the heavy cans onto the small boat and then huddle on the floor of the cabin. The rocking puts me right back to sleep. It’s the silence that wakes me. The motor shutting off tells me that we’ve arrived. I hear the sound of the waves lapping between the side of the boat and the cement wall of the pier at Caleta Tortel. It’s only now that I realize the operator of the boat is hardly more than 30
a boy. His name is Paulo; he’s not very tall; and he has strong arms, reddish hair, a thin goatee and freckles on his nose, but he moves with the confidence and pride of a real man. After a few minutes, we see that he’s not alone. From under an untidy pile of blankets emerges a young woman and then a beautiful little girl with dark, clever eyes. The woman feeds a few pieces of wood through the small opening of the stove, which kept the air less cold during the brief night; then she warms some coffee and offers us a frugal breakfast: homemade biscuits and a strange kind of butter. The atmosphere inside the small cabin is intimate and sweet. With an old blanket around my shoulders, I crouch quietly in a corner. Today there’s a funeral in town. A 17-year-old boy drowned—a fairly
common occurrence in these parts, we’re told. For the sad event, a priest has also arrived from far away. We see well-dressed people with bouquets of flowers in their hands riding in old motorboats, while not-at-all-threatening men in suits wander the alleys with a melancholy air. The gendarmerie smells strongly and invitingly of food. The only thing that tells us we’re in a military barracks is the sad, discolored photos on the walls: groups of proud servicemen in dress uniform, presidents and politicians, and in the corner a rifleman. Otherwise, it seems like a normal residence, with all the warmth and vitality that a house transmits to those who are far from home. From a room down the hall come the sounds of happy people, and hot sun
filters through the window. They offer us a strange drink, and after the last formalities—a few stamps and signatures—a very polite and put-together official gives us authorization and, shaking our hands, wishes us well. It’s very hot now as we go back down the dock, and the heat draws out the smell of the wood. I doze on the inviting and fragrant planks, warmed by that unusual sun. It’s already afternoon when Paulo restarts the motors, two small 25-horsepower outboards. Leaving here makes me a bit sad. I see the last houses pass by, then just forest, water, ice and mountains. Thoughts on Ice Climbing
I was completely captivated. It was Mauri who reminded me of it— yes, my friend Maurizio Giordani: “Remember the Sogno di Gran Scozzese? You know, winter is coming, and the other day I was thinking…beautiful frozen waterfall, beautiful environment, those vertical walls…We really had fun, and for being one of your first waterfalls…!” Instinctively I replied, “I still feel anxious remembering the top part— that wall of ice.” A private adventure with Mauri, my great climbing friend. He was the 48
driving force behind this climb, the true head of the climbing party, because if it had been up to me we wouldn’t have done anything that day. We left late and arrived at the lake by Malga Boazzo at 11. In terms of temperature and weather, the day was perfect, but several roped parties were climbing up the center of the falls. At first I thought I was saved, but Mauri countered my “It’s crowded—let’s try again another time” with an authoritative “No, the conditions are excellent—we’ll climb up the far left.”
So I started the climb. I remember how good Mauri was. I remember the determination with which I gripped the ice axes he had lent me, and I remember my fear, especially when it became clear (immediately) that the waterfall was technical and difficult on the left side. Maybe that day, in the middle of one of my first ice climbs, on the legendary frozen waterfalls of the Val Daone, those breaks and those screws that came out as easily as if they’d been placed in butter didn’t inspire good thoughts. But Mauri finally got me off the falls at 16:30. By the light of our headlamps we returned to the car, where we found
a volunteer from the mountain rescue service waiting for the last climbers (us). Satisfied to finish his shift, he said good-bye and headed toward the valley. That day I felt I had lived a dream… (Luciano Ferrari) Photo: manricodellagnola.com

Muztagh Ata
I wake at dawn inside my little tent as the light passes through the thin but strong fabric. It feels like I’m being hugged—enveloped by big arms that protect me, like when I was a child and my parents held me to comfort me. A hug that suppresses noise, quiets fears, and imparts strength and courage. Today a rosy light announces the arrival of dawn, softening the imposing peaks and giving the surrounding landscape a sweeter and more approachable appearance. The weather is good, and we can set out, carrying equipment and 50
supplies to the upper camp—moving step by step toward our final destination: the summit. Everything is alive when the weather is good. Everything responds to nature’s stimuli and the sun’s energy. There is movement—the desire to be active, to hit the trail, to communicate. But the mountain changes. It can have different faces, transforming quickly, becoming hard, even hostile. These are the moments when you feel alone, abandoned, far from the world.
We aren’t used to being alone anymore. We always need to conceal our solitude by turning to social networks, to the modern forms of communication that deceive us into thinking that we’re close, even if in reality we are continually distancing ourselves from the things that are simple and real. The mountain means solitude, a personal search, a challenge to oneself, and the courage to keep going or to stop. The summit is only a pretext, an objective that often hides the true significance of a mountaineering experience: discovering oneself,
growing, maturing, becoming a better person. This is why I always want to come back, to climb a new peak, to put myself to the test, to exert myself. This, for me, is the journey. This, for me, is mountaineering. (Elena Spalenza) Photo: Maurizio Giordani

KARPOS PARTNER OF:
RACE
Today I’m off work. I already planned my training yesterday evening: long, slow, off-piste. I wake up at 7:30, immediately check the weather, leave the house, and…it’s a splendid day! I see the sun on the peak; it’s a bit cold, but I’m already excited. I go back inside to fix breakfast, thinking about the sun already illuminating the Est del Mulaz, one of Falcade’s iconic mountains that is visible from my house. A bit further off I can see the Cime del Focobon as well…I’m lucky! But the Est has remained in my heart—it was my first “real” ski mountaineering outing. Now I’ve finished my breakfast, and with a thousand thoughts spinning through my head and the awareness that it’s still too early for 64
the Mulaz, I decide to go to San Pellegrino. I go to change. Out of habit, I never underestimate the importance of clothing choice. But with Karpos it’s easy—lightweight, warm and breathable garments. I decide to wear the race suit with the Cervinia pant, jacket and vest over it. I put the Cerro Torre Jacket in my backpack, along with my safety kit and extra gloves and hat. I just need my Phillipp Flamm down jacket, skis, climbing skins and boots and I’m ready! In the meantime, I’ve also chosen my starting point, the Flora Alpino mountain hut. I really want to ski on this beautiful day, and I drive quickly from Falcade
to Passo San Pellegrino. I already have my skis and skins on and head out for the first climb of the day, the Forca Rossa. I’m on the south side, the sun has already arrived and the snow is good—excellent, because today I’m ready to train hard. I know that after every summit will be a fun descent. After 700 meters of elevation gain I’m at Forca Rossa. The view is stunning but I don’t stop to look around because I know there will be an even more beautiful spot further on, and I prefer to bomb the descent with just a few turns. I put on my Cerro Torre and, enjoying myself like a kid, head toward Col Margherita. I feel good, so I add a
few variants with short climbs and descents so I can practice putting on and taking off my skins. I finally reach Col Margherita. Here’s where I want to enjoy the view…which is incredible! I relax for a few minutes and eat something. Only now do I start to feel a bit tired, but I’ll ski for another hour before heading back to the car. When I finish, my GPS shows 4 hours, 28 kilometers and 2,600 meters of elevation gain. I’m very pleased with my training today. (Alessandro Follador) Photo: manricodellagnola.com 65
