ONE HUNDRED YEARS LOWA

Dear LOWA partners,

At the moment, it is not easy to find the right words. We find ourselves in volatile times with highs and lows.

The good news is: LOWA is celebrating its centenary and we are making preparations for this joyous occasion.

But the current situation is a serious cause for concern. After two years of pandemic, people long for life to return to normal. Yet the conflict in the Ukraine, right on our doorstep in Europe, is extremely worrying.

At LOWA we feel the repercussions on a daily basis: price hikes in material, transport and energy, to name but a few.

Nevertheless, demand for LOWA boots remains strong, which is a great challenge for our production sites. No matter how hard we try, we cannot meet everyone’s needs. One reason for this is that we were not always operating at full capacity because of the pandemic.

We live in unstable and unpredictable times and we face situations we have no control over. But what we can do at this time is concentrate on the task at hand. We want customers and consumers to be delighted with our service and brand, and to offer them the best possible outdoor experience with our products. I am convinced that if we achieve this, we will maintain our relevance and success in future.

Of course, in times like these, it is not that easy to think about our company’s anniversary celebrations. Yet despite this difficult situation, I would like to invite you to join me on a trip down memory lane: 100 years of LOWA.

LOWA was founded by Lorenz Wagner in 1923. From humble beginnings in a small workshop at his parents’ home in Jetzendorf, the “Ilmtal factory” developed into an international brand marketed in 80 countries. By unflagging product development and dedicated customer orientation, LOWA succeeded in expanding the brand. Naturally, the Zanatta family joining LOWA with the Tecnica Group and the leadership of Werner Riethmann as Managing Director played a decisive role. And there has been a steady upward trajectory since 1993. In 2000, a new record was broken as our boots passed the 1 million mark. By 2010 we had hit 2 million pairs, and in 2021 we reached the 3 million milestone.

“Progress means taking many small steps in the right direction. And sometimes, one big one, too”, says Werner Riethmann.

In 2019, we took a big step when we took over our main production site, so that we could control an additional part of the supply chain. This increased the LOWA family to over 2,000. They produce the quality that makes the unique difference in the product. At this point I would like to say a special thank you to our employees.

Naturally, LOWA’s success is also built on the values we have continued to develop over the past 100 years. The core value of continuous improvement, striving to be better, has shaped us like no other. Our slogan “simply more…” expresses this clearly. With this in mind, we are currently setting a decisive course for our future. We are working intensively on topics such as sustainability, digitalisation, effectiveness, process optimisation and the expansion of our production facilities.

We are launching an exciting new collection for our anniversary year 2023. It comprises a balanced combination of “new classics”, modern multifunctional shoes, and great models for kids. Besides this great collection, we are planning several marketing campaigns and festivities to mark this special occasion.

Let us venture into the future with a positive attitude!

We are active in a sector that offers products that are in demand and generate positive emotions. Outdoor is a popular, enduring trend. People are drawn to nature. And we have the products people need, especially now. Let us look ahead to 2023, LOWA’s anniversary year, with optimism. Let us celebrate the LOWA brand’s 100 th birthday.

100 JAHRE ABENTEUER

Die Berge gehören schon über ein Jahrhundert lang nicht mehr allein den Extremsportlern. Dazu passt, dass sich Fernwanderwege seit einiger Zeit wachsender Beliebtheit erfreuen. Einer der berühmtesten ist sicher der Jakobsweg – eigentlich ein Netz von Wegen, das in Santiago de Compostela in Spanien endet. Trekking-Schuhe und modernste Ausrüstung sind inzwischen selbstverständlich auf allen Wegen dabei.

100 YEARS OF ADVENTURE

For more than a century, the mountains have no longer been the exclusive territory of extreme athletes. Friends, family, hiking groups – people of all types hike and climb the mountains around the world. And, for them, it is not about breaking records or accomplishing the “impossible”. It is about getting out and experiencing nature, sometimes about pushing your limits, but always about your own experience. It is appropriate that long-distance hiking trails have been growing in popularity for some time now. One of the most famous is surely the Way of St. James – actually a network of trails – which ends in Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Trekking shoes and cutting-edge equipment have now become a matter of course on all trails.

EIN KULTSCHUH, DER GESCHICHTE SCHRIEB.

1997 waren die Menschen in den Bergen mit festen Bergschuhen unterwegs. Was fehlte, waren Schuhe, welche auch für kleinere Ausflüge und Tagestouren geeignet waren. Der damalige LOWAGeschäftsführer Werner Riethmann tüftelte daher gemeinsam mit seinem Entwicklungsteam an einer Idee. Warum nicht einfach die Sohle direkt anspritzen, anstatt sie zu verkleben? So kam der erste RENEGADE auf den Markt und legte somit den Grundstein für eine komplette Outdoorschuh-Kategorie: die All Terrain Collection oder kurz ATC. Die Kategorie und der Schuh waren völlig neu und für diese Zeit absolut nonkonform. Daher waren auch die Bildsprache und das Marketing völlig neu.

A HISTORY-MAKING CULT SHOE.

In 1997, people were making their way through the mountains with sturdy mountaineering boots. But there was simply no type of shoes that were designed for short excursions and one-day tours, so former LOWA Managing Director Werner Riethmann began to toy with an idea along with his development team. Why not simply inject the sole directly onto the shoe instead of cementing it on? With this, the first RENEGADE made its way to the market and laid the foundation for a complete outdoor shoe category: the All Terrain Collection, or simply ATC. The category and the shoe were something unheard of and absolutely nonconformist at the time. The visual language and marketing used to sell the shoes had to be completely new as well.

Bei ihren Recherchen in den Aktenschränken von LOWA stießen die Historiker auf ein charmantes Dokument: Ein mit der Schreibmaschine getippter Entwurf für einen Brief. In ihm wenden sich die Berg- bzw. Skischuhe direkt an ihren Träger und bitten um pflegliche Behandlung. Und auch wenn das Schuhwerk, das wir heute tragen, mit den Schuhen aus den 1950er Jahren nicht mehr viel gemein hat: Die meisten "Bitten" aus diesem Brief sind nach wie vor aktuell!

“LET’S GO HIKING, FRIEND”

While researching in the files of LOWA, our historians came upon a charming document: a draft of a letter typed on a typewriter. In it, the mountaineering and skiing shoes address their wearers directly, asking for careful handling. And, although the shoes we wear today do not have much in common with the shoes of the 1950s, most of the requests from this letter are still valid today!

Bitte 1: Lass mich atmen! Verschmiere meine Lederporen nicht mit Fetten und Ölen, sondern putze mich lieber mit Wasser und einer milden Seifenlauge. Pflege mich anschließend am besten mit einer Schuhcreme oder einem Schuhwachs.

Bitte 2: Halte mich in Form! Gewähre mir in Ruhepausen die Wohltat eines guten Spanners und stopfe mich bitte zum Trocknen mit Papier aus. Aber bitte beachte: Trockne mich behutsam in trockener, mäßiger Wärme! Vermeide große oder gar feuchte Hitze und pralle Sonne!

Bitte 3: Pflege mein Innenleben! Reinige mich regelmäßig auch innerlich! Der Innenschuh und die Zunge sollten außen aber auch innen behandelt werden, nur viel sparsamer.

Bitte 4: Gib mich rechtzeitig zum Schuhdoktor! Auch wenn man Arztbesuche manchmal gerne hinauszögert, bin ich immer gerne vernünftig und will jede kleine Ausbesserung sofort erledigt haben. Gib mich deshalb direkt zu LOWA in die Service-Werkstatt.

Request 1: Let me breathe! Do not smear my leather pores with greases and oils. Instead, clean me with water and a mild soap solution. Then, care for me with a shoe cream or shoe wax afterwards.

Request 2: Keep me in shape! When I am taking a break, do me the favour of a good shoe tensioner and please stuff me with dry paper. But please note: dry me out carefully in a dry, moderate heat. Avoid high or moist heat and blazing sun.

Request 3: Take care of my insides! Give me a regular cleaning on the inside, too. My interior and tongue should be treated just like the outside, only less frequently.

Request 4: Take me on regular shoe doctor visits! Even though we sometimes prefer to procrastinate when it comes to seeing the doctor, I like to be reasonable and have every ache and pain taken care of straight away, so take me directly to the LOWA service workshop.

NARROW LAST

WIDE LAST

Bei einem W-Leisten ist das Volumen im Vorfußbereich breiter als bei einem normalen Leisten. Schuhe, die über einen W-Leisten gefertigt wurden, können von besonderen Fußtypen (z. B. Hallux Valgus, Plattfuß, Senkfuß etc.) als angenehmer empfunden werden.

KIDS LAST

The lasts used for LOWA’s children’s footwear are not simply miniversions of the lasts used for adults’ feet. They have been specially modified to reflect the anatomy of children’s feet and reduced in size. In addition, the height and width of the heel, toe and instep areas have been modified.

WOMAN LAST

Um eine optimale Passform zu gewährleisten, wird der Leisten bei Frauenmodellen speziell an die weibliche Anatomie angepasst. Der Leisten ist maßgeblich dafür zuständig, dass der Schuh gut sitzt. To ensure perfect fit, the lasts used for female footwear have been specially designed with the anatomy of women’s feet in mind. The last plays a key role in the ultimate fit of a boot. STRAP-ON CRAMPON

DOUBLE INJECTION

Für eine wirkungsvolle Dämpfung und einen hohen Tragekomfort wird die Sohle des Schuhs über ein technisch aufwendiges Anspritzverfahren mit dem Schaft verbunden. Dazu kommt der Oberschuh in eine speziell gefertigte Gussform. In diese wird anschließend in unterschiedlichen Schichten ein PU-Schaumstoff eingebracht. Daraus entsteht die Sohle, die sich direkt mit dem Schaft zu einer Einheit verbindet.

To provide effective cushioning and improved comfort, the sole of is bonded to the upper in a technically demanding injection process. The upper boot is placed into a specially designed mould. Various layers of PU-foam padding are then poured into it. In the process, the sole and upper are bonded together.

In the animal kingdom, protective shells cover reptiles’ delicate skin. LOWA REPTEX is inspired by this natural form of protection. The upper material of the shoe prevents damage caused by objects like sharp rocks. In comparison with rubber, the effective reinforcement reduces the total weight and increases performance on the mountain.

LOWA FLEX®

To add flexibility to each eyelet, the lacing systems through which laces are threaded are affixed separately. These sections are made of soft leather trim or textile materials that prevent pressure points. Thanks to the flexible arrangement of the eyelets, the laces can individually be adjusted without producing too much pressure on specific areas. Yet the tongue maintains its optimum positioning.

FLEXFIT®

Feet can roll more effectively if the upper of a hiking boot can be easily bent. Such a feature saves energy when the wearer climbs hills and it provides real comfort in the process. For this reason, LOWA has integrated a flexible zone and a “lace loop” into the instep area. This involves repositioning the boot’s eyelets and using a flexible lace hook that improves heel comfort and facilitates bending.

FLEXFIT SYNCRO®

Bei der FLEXFIT-SYNCRO®-Technologie handelt es sich um eine asymmetrische Schaftkonstruktion, durch die sich der Schaft des Schuhs „synchron“ zum Unterschenkel bewegt. FLEXFIT SYNCRO® technology involves an asymmetric upper design that enables the footwear’s upper to move “in sync” with the wearer’s lower leg. This feature significantly improves walking comfort – particularly on paths, trails or rough terrain. The technology focuses on a key aspect of walking: A person plants his or her foot not centrally under the hip, but rather somewhat farther in the middle.

MINIMAL SEAMS

2 ZONE LACING

C4-TONGUE

Bei dieser speziellen Konstruktion der Schuhzunge wird der Tragekomfort merklich erhöht. So ist die Zunge zum Beispiel auf der Fußaußenseite dicker gepolstert und verfügt über einen weichen Abschluss am oberen Ende. Diese asymmetrische Polsterung sorgt für eine optimale Unterstützung in verschiedenen Fußbereichen. Zudem sind die Aussparungen für die Knöchelbereiche innen höher als außen. The specially designed footwear tongue substantially enhances comfort. The tongue includes extra padding for the outer portion of the foot, and the upper end of it is especially soft. This asymmetric padding provides optimum support to many areas of the foot. To take into account the foot’s natural anatomy, the recesses for the ankle area have also been placed higher on the inside than on the outside, and a flexible bending insert has been integrated into the inner side by the foot.

I-LOCK

ROLLER EYELETS

PADDED EDGING
