DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE It is hard to believe we are preparing for Spring and Summer programs already. Due to COVID impacts, your Community Services Department staff have been working daily to review current State/County/CDC guidelines to ensure we are offering appropriate programs and services to the community. Please review this edition of the Recreation Activity Guide to find opportunities for you and your family to stay engaged in programs to feel connected to the community and improve your health and wellness. You may notice that programming is limited at the Community Center. This is because the City collaborated with the County of Santa Clara to transform the Community Center into a vaccination site for the north County. I want to thank all the City staff for the ongoing support of the vaccination site, as well as the testing location at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to programming, vaccinations and testing, we are excited to have a number of park projects in progress, including: •
•
•
•
Fayette Park - 1.3 acres located between El Camino Real and Fayette Drive. Currently under construction and scheduled to open this fall. Mora Park - .8 acres located between Mora Place and Ortega Avenue. Currently under construction and scheduled to open this fall. Pyramid Park - 2.76 acres located at Pyramid Way and Infinity Loop. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring and open in winter 2021. Magical Bridge - approx. 1 acre all-inclusive playground coming to Rengstroff Park. Construction is scheduled for this fall with an anticipated opening of summer 2022.
The Community Services Department staff look forward to engaging with you and your family in the coming months. Stay safe and hope to see you engaged in our programs or enjoying the many City parks, John

Registration does not happen in class, please make sure to register online. Please note that no refund or make-up classes will be issued for any missed activity. Waitlist • Drats! You were this close to getting in! Your name will be placed on a waitlist if the class is full. At the program supervisors discretion, another class may be added to accomodate for participants on the waitlist. You will be given a 24-hour deadline to submit your Registration Form and payment. SWIM LESSONS
Swim Lessons
Registration • Based on the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program, each child must be the required minimum/maximum age on the first day of each session. The age requirement is strictly enforced. • For the first session, we recommend you enroll in the last swim level completed the previous summer. This serves as a great refresher after almost one year out of the water. • We strongly urge you to make sure your child is registered for the correct level. If your child is registered for the incorrect level we do not guarantee space in other levels. • Don’t know what level to put your favorite swimmers in this summer? Let Mountain View Aquatics Staff help. The City of Mountain View will be hosting various swim assessments in the month of February and April at Eagle Park Pool. See page 43 for more information. • If there is an open spot in a class, the waitlist will be contacted first before allowing any other children into the class. • To keep your child safe, registration in back-to-back class times is not permitted.
Swim Lesson Guidelines • Please bring a copy of your receipt on the first day of class. • During all swim lessons, please direct all questions regarding registration and swim lessons to the Pool Supervisor. • If your child advances to a higher swim level, transfers may only be made if: (1) Space is available in the class/session; and (2) The certificate proving the child passed the lower level is presented at the time of the transfer. • If your child does not attend the first day of class, you will be contacted to confirm that your child will be attending the rest of the session. If your child is no longer able to attend, the waitlist may be contacted to fill the spot.

Learn to Swim • 6 to 14 years Level 1
Level 2
Level 3
The objective of Level 1 is to learn basic personal water safety information and skills, to help participants feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Participants will learn elementary aquatic skills, which they will build on as they progress through the six Learn-to-Swim levels. Most skills will be completed with assistance from the instructor.
Build on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1. Most skills will be practiced with little to no support from the instructor. Greater emphasis on student independency in the water and performing skills. Participants continue to explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to lay the foundation for future strokes. This level focuses on participants practicing skills independently.
Build on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment. Skills practiced should be performed independently by the student. Skills learned include front crawl, back crawl, breastroke kick, head first entries, scissors kick, and elementary backstroke. Ability to swim 15 yards independently on front and back by the end of the 8 day session. Students should be comfortable in deep water.
In order to pass Level 2, children must be able to complete the following skills: • Enter & exit the water by stepping or jumping from the side • Fully submerge & hold breath • Complete a bob • Open eye under water & retrieve an object • Front jellyfish float & front tuck float • Front float, back float, front glide, back glide • Recover to a vertical position • Roll from front to back & back to front • Demonstrate treading water movement • Change direction of swimming on front or back • Finning arm action
In order to pass Level 3, children must be able to complete the following skills:
Level 4
Level 5
Level 6
Participants improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl, elementary, backstroke) for greater distances. More emphasis is placed on stroke efficiency and technique as well as endurance.
Help participants refine their performance of all six swimming strokes (front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breastroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke). More head first entries and turns are introduced. Student should be able to swim multiple laps continuously by the end of the 8 day session. The objectives of Level 5 are to coordinate and refine strokes. Participants refine their performance of all the strokes (front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breastroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke) and increase their distances. Flip turns on the front and back are also introduced.
Refine strokes so participants swim them with greater efficiency and effectiveness over longer distances. Ability to swim continuously using all strokes and turns. The objectives of Level 6 are to refine strokes so students swim them with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 focuses on becoming a Fitness Swimmer. An emphasis is placed on technique and distance swimming. Students will be able to learn a variety of swim drills that will improve their technique.
