DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

I am very excited for the spring and summer after what has been a wet winter, which we desperately needed. I look forward to spending more time outside as the days grow longer and will appreciate getting out into nature for walks, runs, hikes and bike rides.

Once again, the Recreation Division staff have worked diligently to bring you what is our most robust Recreation Activity Guide to date! This means more programs for you and your family to take advantage of during the spring and summer. Please note the highlighted special events and activities such as Concert on the Plaza Series, KidStock Concert Series, and our popular Summer Outdoor Movie Nights.

Finally, I would like to provide a few project updates that the Community Services Department is working on:

• The Biodiversity and Urban Forest Plan will guide the City to enhance the diversity of plants, trees, and wildlife in parks and on other public and private lands. The Strategy will articulate a vision that incorporates the principles of protection, restoration, design and community engagement. The Strategy will also include a new Urban Forest Plan, which will replace the existing Community Tree Master Plan and will help preserve and enhance tree canopy in Mountain View through updated standards for landscaping, tree protection, removals, and replanting. Visit MountainView.gov/Biodiversity for more information.

• The purpose of the Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan (Plan) is to define a clear vision and action plan for the future of Mountain View’s parks and open space, trail system, recreation facilities and recreation programs and services. The City’s last Parks and Open Space Plan was adopted by the City Council in 2014, and the Recreation Plan was adopted in 2008. We will combine these two documents to create a cohesive plan that will address the open space needs of the community and identify and analyze the variety of programs that utilize these spaces and associated facilities. Visit MountainView.gov/ ParksandRecStrategicPlan for more information.

Both plans will rely on public input through meetings, surveys and public meetings with the Parks and Recreation Commission and City Council. Please join us and provide your input to ensure the voice of Mountain View residents are heard as we plan these long-term plans.

I hope to see you at our parks, programs and events in the c oming months,

OUR MISSION

Create Community Through People, Parks & Programs.

Class Attendance and Registration • You’re excited and we’re excited that you’re ready to jump into an activity. Before you do, though, make sure you’re already registered to participate. Registration does not happen in class, please make sure to register online.

Waitlist • Drats! You were this close to getting in! Your name will be placed on a waitlist if the class is full. At the program supervisors discretion, another class may be added to accommodate for participants on the waitlist. You will be given a 24-hour deadline to submit your Registration Form and payment. If your Registration Form and payment are not submitted by the given deadline, you will be removed from the waitlist and the next person on the list will be contacted.

Age/Birth Date • To register, participants must be within the required minimum and maximum age by the first day of class. All participants 17 years of age or younger must provide their date of birth. Proof of age may be requested.

Transfer • Need to transfer from one activity to another? You may transfer to another activity as long as you meet the minimum age requirement, there is space available and you send your written request three (3) business days before the first day of class. So that means if class starts on Monday, you have the Wednesday before to transfer. Email your request to Recreation@MountainView.gov. You will be assessed a $10 processing fee per transaction. Withdrawal • If you need to withdraw from an activity and receive a refund, e-mail us at Recreation@MountainView.gov no less than five (5) business days before the first day of class. You may also submit a Withdrawal Request Form that you can download by visiting MountainView.gov/Register. Just so we’re on the same page, if your class starts on Monday, your last day to withdraw is the Monday before that class. You will be assessed a $10 processing fee per transaction.

Missed a day? • Unfortunately, no refund or make-up classes will be issued for any missed activity by the participant. Once a class begins, can I still join or transfer? • Yes! We do not prorate any of the days that have already taken place, though. You just need to catch up with everyone else at the next class!

Behavior Violation • Participants receiving three (3) behavior violations will be removed from the specific program.

Wait, what? You canceled my activity?!

Classes not meeting minimum registration levels will be canceled. Participants will be notified approximately three (3) business days before class begins and issued a full refund, or be eligible to transfer to another class if space is available. Participants transferring will be responsible for any additional fees.

40 th Anniversary of Shoreline at Mountain View

Shoreline at Mountain View is a 750-acre wildlife and recreation area with a unique past, flourishing presentday offerings and a promising future. As the City of Mountain View celebrates the area’s fortieth year as a community resource, we welcome members of the public to join us in in acknowledging the legacy and wonder of all that the facility and open space have to offer.

Shoreline at Mountain View’s PAST

Prior to its current state, areas of Shoreline at Mountain View operated as a hog farm, an auto-wrecking yard and a dump. In addition, much of the area was diked and removed from tidal influence by the Leslie Salt Company in the early 1900s.

In 1968, the City of Mountain View purchased the land along the San Francisco Bay with the intention of elevating its surface to mitigate chronic flood risks and to provide the region with recreational amenities. To defray the costs of fill material, an agreement was signed with City and County of San Francisco to receive SF’s household waste for fifteen years.

Shoreline at Mountain View opened to the public on July 17, 1983 having been designed with the intent of preserving open space, ensuring flood protection and providing natural as well as passive recreational uses.

PRESENT Day Offerings

The community facility serves as a destination for birds, wildlife and our diverse community, open 364 days a year from 6 a.m. until thirty minutes after sunset. Current amenities include sailing, kayaking and windsurfing opportunities at Shoreline Lake, over 10.5 miles of walking, jogging and bicycling trails, an 18-hole golf course, tours and reservations at the historic Rengstorff House, a kite lot, burrowing owl preserve, bird watching opportunities and a tidal marsh viewing platform.

A Promising FUTURE

As the North Bayshore area of Mountain View expands economic opportunities and quality housing, Shoreline continues its legacy of a preeminent open space area for members of the community to enjoy.

In partnership with the community and environmental agencies around the San Francisco Bay, the Shoreline Division continues its work to buffer our local communities from the impacts of climate change. Further, the land serves to provide outdoor, recreational uses and preserve as well as protect the wildlife that call Shoreline at Mountain View home.

Let’s Celebrate

Shoreline at Mountain View has planned a series of walks, talks and community events celebrate Shoreline’s past, present and future. For more information and to sign-up for an event, please visit: MountainView.gov/Shoreline
