Dr James Moore has announced Tim Deem as the new Vice President of Development for Christian Home & Bible School. Mr. Deem is from the West Palm Beach area and has ser ved on the CH&BS Board of Directors for the last four and a half years. His love for CH&BS began more than twelve years ago. “Tim has a great interest and passion for Christian Home & Bible School and helping children,” said Dr. Moore. “I believe Tim is capable of doing an outstanding job He brings a lot of talent, a strong Christian commitment, many years of professional experience of working with people, along with an engaging personality.”

Tim was a manufacturer’s representative for Ultimate Door of Palm Beach. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a major in Marketing and Public Relations from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia Tim ser ved as an elder of the Suncoast Church of Christ in Lake Worth, FL He is filling the position previously held by Matt Brock, who has accepted a position with Liberty Council, a nonprofit litigation, education, and policy organization dedicated to advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of human life, and the traditional family Tim and his wife Sabrina will celebrate their 26th wedding anniversar y in October Sabrina is a stay at home mom who enjoys her supporting role She has been active at the Suncoast Church of Christ and loves Teen Week at Central Florida Bible Camp.

he Christian Home & Bible School gymnasium renovation is exciting and well under way as major construction began immediately after graduation on June 5, 2009. The construction crew removed the old rubber flooring and the concrete sub flooring New recessed concrete flooring was poured to support the wood floor. A new ceiling and all new lighting were the next phase of the project. The ceiling has been replaced with an insulated and durable material that reduces the temperature at the ceiling by 20 degrees The administration and project architect researched gymnasium lighting and selected the PulseStar lighting system, which is a highly efficient system that saves 40% to 80% over electricity used by older technologies

Bri Bri is 11 years old and in the seventh grade. She came to Christian Home & Bible School last July from the coast. She and her sister Brittany live in Burton Cottage. Bri really likes gymnastics and wants to be a cheerleader. She enjoys talking, sleeping, and playing football She plans to tr y out for the volleyball and basketball teams. Bri lives in Burton cottage with Ricky and Cathy Brown, her houseparents, and seven other girls She likes the way the other kids in the home act. “The are nice and don’t pick on you,” she said “It’s a Christian place ” Bri enjoys her CH&BS family “Mr. Ricky is fun. He likes to play around with us He has accepted all of us here,” said Bri. “Mrs. Cathy is really nice and takes good care of us. Anything we need she gets for us.”
New Kids on Campus
Layla Layla is sixteen years old and in the 10th grade. She came to CH&BS last March from South Florida She appreciates all kinds of music, doing her own thing, and working out. “I love living here,” she said. “I was praying for somewhere I could be happy, a place where I could get a good education and I could be with other Christians.”
Brittany said, “Mrs Cathy, my house mom, is nice and is always there to help us. I feel like I can talk to her and she really cares. Mr. Ricky, our house dad, is so funny We laugh a lot He’s nice and is a good listener ”

She came to Christian Home & Bible School during the summer from the coast Brittany is an active teenager who likes to draw, play basketball and football, and sleep. Brittany is happy to be living on campus. The mission trip she took during the summer was a great experience for her “People are really nice here It is fun having lots of other kids around. It’s really cool most of the time having seven sisters,” said Brittany “Miss Johnnie, our Social Worker, is easy to talk to and really nice.”

Three Graduate in the Children’s Home Three girls living in Burton Cottage at the Children’s Home graduated with the 52 member CH&BS class of 2009 Katie Brown, daughter of Christian Home & Bible School Houseparents celebrated graduation, along with Jessica and Donna Marie Community College this fall. Jessica and her brothers came to CH&BS in August of 2007 At that time Jessica was an honors student who took care of her brothers and sisters Now, she is full of joy and is also a wonderful big sister to the girls in Burton Cottage. Four Children Give T heir Life to Christ K aelen has recommitted her life to the Lord during the Barker Weaver Week of Bible camp. “I want to focus my life on Christ,” Kaelen said Justin has rededicated his life to God and was baptized by his house dad, Keith Robinett, at the Central Florida Bible Camp this summer Trey, who has lived at the Children’s Home only a few months, was baptized by Mr. Keith at the Orange Avenue Church of Christ in July Trey said he had always talked of the Lord and had learned about God and the
Bible from his grandmother “I knew one day I would do something big like getting baptized," said Trey. “It was the right thing to do.” “Trey wrote a beautiful confession about wanting to give his life to God,” said Kelly, his house mom. Our houseparents’ son Tristan Robinett was baptized by his father, Keith, at the South 14th Street Church of Christ in July. “He had been considering baptism for about a year. He has studied and asked a lot of questions,” said Tristan’s mom, Kelly
Burton Cottage Takes Mission Trip to Sardinia, New York ’

Seven girls from our Children’s Home living in Burton cottage went to New York for a mission trip during the summer The girls were a part of the Mount Dora Church of Christ Youth Group. Their job was to host a vacation Bible school for the children in Sardinia and inter view residents to find out the needs of the community. The girls also helped landscape the church building by planting flowers and spreading mulch. “I really enjoyed ser ving God while helping other people,” said Layla “I thought the door knocking and visiting with people was cool. I also loved going to Niagara Falls for the first time,” said Bri “My favorite part was just being able to help the people and talk with them. One man who was disabled with dementia almost cried because he appreciated our visit so much,” said Dorothy I thought Niagara Falls was amazing, but I really liked playing games with the little kids during VBS,” said Britt After a wonderful visit to Niagara Falls, the group visited scenic Letchworth State Park and toured an Amish community. “It was a fun experience,” said Layla

John Spray was a part of the Florida High School Athletic Association 1A Track and Field State Championship Team He has lived in the Mount Dora Children’s Home since he was five years old. John is a good leader and a natural athlete who is successful at whatever he attempts to do. His coaches can count on him to rally the hearts of his team to accomplish what might look impossible. His ability to step up to the plate and do what is best for the team was evident when he, Joey Cockrell, Robert Hussey, and Blaine Ramsdell formed a 4x400m relay team before the District meet which eventually lead them to the State meet. “John perseveres and pushes himself to go above and beyond what is expected. He played a huge part in our district, regional, and state track titles, including a state medal performance in the 4 x 100m relay,” said Coach Means, Head MDB Track and Field Coach. Congratulations, John! ’ part about living here is being with people who love God, “said Layla She likes going to church and being a part of an active church youth group “I like my youth group here because it is small and ever yone is so friendly, like a family,” she said. Her houseparents, Ricky and Cathy Brown, are good examples to Layla. “Mrs. Cathy has a caring heart She is the one I talk to when I need someone to listen,” she said. “Mr. Ricky is a great listener. He wants what is best for us, and he helps us with our problems.” London London has been at CH&BS since last April. She is in the 6th grade, loves basketball and says she will play for the WNBA one day London has a black belt in tae kwon do and jujitsu. Her favorite color is green, and she enjoys drawing. “I like living at Christian Home & Bible School because there are a lot of nice people who seem to understand me. I especially enjoyed getting to go to camp this summer because I got to learn more about God. I didn’t go to church much where I used to live,” she said London likes being part of an active church youth group. “I want to be baptized soon,” said London London likes living in Burton cottage with her seven new sisters. “Burton has some amazing people living there. I know I can talk to some of the girls about a lot of stuff,” said London “I like my house mom, Mrs. Cathy, because she understands where I came from and some of the issues I deal with. Mr. Ricky is a pretty cool person, too. He knows I need to be encouraged, and he helps me focus on my school work,” said London. Trey Trey is thirteen and in the 8th grade this year. He came to the Children’s Home last April from Central Florida He likes to sing rapp music and play basketball. Trey is glad he came to Christian Home & Bible School and enjoys living in Lugar Cottage with his new brothers and sisters “Lugar is a home and the people here encourage me,” he said. “It is a safe place I don’t have as much freedom here, but with a lot of freedom, I sometimes got into trouble ” He thinks Mrs. Kelly, his house mother, is really nice. “She is funny and treats ever yone the same,” said Trey. He likes Keith, his house dad, because he knows Keith cares. Keith likes to chill out and take all the guys to the movie or Wal Mart together.

Both Chelsea and Parker have brought honor and recognition to CH&BS Travis Brundage was the valedictorian of the Christian Home & Bible School class of 2009 with a 4 3220 GPA Travis has attended CH&BS since the 6th grade. During high school Travis was active in Band, Senior Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta (math organization), and Tri M(music association). His favorite teachers at CH&BS are Mrs Hooker, because she was organized and taught ver y well with a mathematical way of thinking, and Mrs Grubbs, who was a ver y cool and personable teacher and class sponsor Travis is attending the University of Central Florida and majoring in Computer Science. “I really enjoyed my years at Christian Home & Bible School. The Christian environment made it a great place to learn and go to school,” said Travis. Lindsey Massaro was the salutatorian of the class of 2009 graduating with a 4.2586 GPA. She has attended CH&BS since the sixth grade. Lindsey was involved in band as Drum Major and student conductor, Senior Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Tri M President, was a science fair participate at the regional and state levels, and a Senior Superlative. Her favorite CH&BS teachers are, “Mrs Grubbs because she made English fun, interesting, and exciting for those who didn’t even like English, and Mr Yopp, whose Christian attitude and love for the band was so infectious we couldn’t help but love him,” said Lindsey Lindsey will attend Florida Southern in Lakeland this fall majoring in Music Education “It was absolutely wonderful to go to a school where our Lord was loved and welcomed. This local art organization raises funds throughout the year to sponsor student artists’ future study in the areas of visual and performing arts. Chelsea Emer y signed a softball scholarship with Brevard Community College before graduation last spring. Chelsea has played a variety of positions in her softball career, including outfield, first base, and catcher She was named to the All Regional Softball Team for the 2009 season.
eannine Yawn was chosen to represent our school at the Rotar y Youth Leadership Awards in Orlando Professional speakers at the conference stressed the qualities of good leadership, including how to confidently present oneself in front of a group. Jeannine competed with students in teambuilding exercises performing skits while enhancing their communication skills Each student was required to present a pre planned or extemporaneous speech Jeannine was awarded runner up for her speech “I’m glad I had the opportunity to go to RYLA because I gained confidence and learned valuable skills. I feel much more comfortable speaking in front of a crowd,” said Jeannine Christian Home and Bible School has been accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) since 1980 and the National Christian School Association (NCSA) since 2004. Last spring a Peer Review Team composed of five school administrators visited the CH&BS campus to evaluate three areas: 1. Seven Educational Standards, 2. Continuous School Improvement, 3. Quality Assurance of External and Internal Reviews The team also reviewed the school’s success in achieving the goals envisioned in the 2004 School Improvement Plan. Dr. Cliff Churchill, Chairman of the Review Team, reported to the school faculty and administration: “The Team was impressed with the learning environment which incorporates a Christian world view and an accomplished academic program The administration and faculty are building the capacity of the school to increase and sustain learning We recommend SACS continue accreditation to the school.” Linda Smock, NCSA Chairperson stated, “I was on the review team in 2004, and I see much growth and development Great job! We are impressed with the spiritual perspective of the school at all grade levels The advances made in technology are excellent, and greater community support is evident.”

Robotics had an amazing year! After receiving the Automation Award for the programming of their robot, the robotics team received the highest honor that any team can receive, the Chairman's Award. This award represents the spirit of FIRST, the organization that sponsors the robotics competition. It is awarded to the team the judges agree best represents a model for other teams to emulate. It is FIRST ’s most prestigious award. “I don't think my feet have hit the ground yet. This award means more to me than winning the competition It says more about who we are,” said Bill Hamilton, the advisor of the robotics program.

The Bulldog Baseball team had a winning season with a record of 18 8 The team was district runner up, advancing to regionals and losing to a ver y good Pinecastle Christian team in the playoffs MDB had more seniors on the team than ever before. Jason Matusik was an outstanding player, leading the team in homeruns and RBI’s. He received a full scholarship to play baseball at Lake Sumter Community College Parker Brown, Seth Hooper, and Taylor Sleaford were instrumental in leading the Bulldog team in this ver y successful season. “This was a ver y enjoyable year. We had really good kids who were a pleasure to work with,” said Coach Benny Hunton. “They showed great leadership and made coaching fun!”

“ We look for ward to rebuilding next year. We have a nucleus of good pitching and several young players with some good experience,” said Coach Hunton. “It should be a great year.” MDB Softball Takes District Title The MDB Softball team had a ver y successful 2009 season with a 23 5 record The Bulldogs won the District title and went on to the second game in regional play. Their season ended with a 2 1 loss in the regional final game against Providence School of Jacksonville.
“Chelsea Emer y received a softball scholarship to Brevard Community College, and we should have three girls sign scholarships in 2010,” said Coach Scott. “ We have all our players except Chelsea and Alisa returning for 2010 I believe we have a good shot at making the state playoffs this year,” said Coach Scott “ We need more girls to tr y out for the team!” Tennis The boy’s Tennis team was a new addition to the CH&BS athletic program for 2009. The players put forth their best efforts for competition. Being a first year program, it was a huge accomplishment to come out of the season with two team wins and to earn an overall record of 2 5. Most of all, it was a pleasure to see our team react appropriately with the ethics of tennis and to compete with a strong Christian ethic on and off the court Spring 2009 was a great season for the girls’ tennis team who finished with eleven wins and only two losses. “The girls really worked together as a team and had a lot of fun,” said Coach Simmons “There are four steps to achievement: plan purposefully, prepare prayerfully, proceed positively, and pursue persistently.”

DB Boys’ Track & Field Team won the Florida High School Athletic Association State Championship. The Bulldogs scored in all six field events, lead by Br yan Kilts, who won the long jump, triple jump, and high jump, scoring 30 points for the team. Tyrone Johnson placed 2nd in the 110m hurdles and was part of the 7th place 4x100m relay team, which included Josh Bruns, Raymond Bernard, and John Spray. Josh Bruns also placed 8th in pole vault. In the throwing events Eric Rapp placed 3rd in the discus, and Aaron Smith took 6th in shot put. Also competing were Devon Freeman in pole vault and Robert Hussey in the 800m run, and the 4x400m relay team of Blaine Ramsdell, John Spray, Raymond Bernard, and Robert Hussey.

Two years ago Track & Field coaches Nathan Means, Kathy Pruitt, Tim Hiteshew, and Will Siebert met to strategically draft the road map to win a state title. Goals were set as to how the team could earn the necessar y points to win. This would depend on how MDB athletes, as well as those throughout the state, progressed. There are benefits in finding talent on a large team with 17 different events for an athlete to develop their strengths “Our strength was in field events,” said Coach Means. “You take the talent you have and build from there ” Good coaching in all areas was absolutely crucial for the state championship! The Learn students rese books, and m complete grap bubble maps include the fo questions: Wh does the animal live in the rainforest, what does it eat, who are its enemies, and what are some fascinating facts about the animal. A rubric was used to grade the project with points for following directions, completing the project, neatness, showing the student did the work, and an oral presentation. “Our teaching team created the rainforest unit activities to help the children understand how important our natural resources are and how we need to preser ve these resources created by God,” said Lori Hadley, Learning Adventures teacher.

The Christian Home & Bible School Learning Adventures classes of Kindergarten and first graders studied the rainforest last year. The four week unit began as each student researched and created a rainforest animal The animals are made of paper maché, foam board, fabric, or clay. Live palms and tropical plants along with the student’s animals were used to transform the lobby of the school dining hall into a Rainforest Café. Students and parents sold all kinds of rainforest snacks, like brownies, trail mix and chocolate covered bananas in the café to other students Proceeds from the sale went to help preser ve acres of the Amazon rainforest through the Rainforest Alliance Parents managed the Rainforest Café while students worked in shifts to show off their money and math skills. More than $1,000 was raised!

element ary T he CH&BS Elementar y Art Department, unde direction of Mr Phil McWhirt, sponsored the Elementar y Art Show. Kindergarten through f students created projects to be exhibited in a form show The projects demonstrated the process that a professional artist goes through to produce a masterpiece to be sold. Various projects were introduced at each grade level, including the mixed media used to produce each one. Students worked hard on their projects, expressing a sense of accomplishment from their work. Each art project was professionally matted and framed and ready to sell. Many parents, students, and friends came to view and buy their favorite student’s masterpiece. “I wanted all the students to enjoy the opportu proudly showing off something they created, to be of their hard work, and move for ward with other accomplishments,” said Mr. McWhirt. “In order for us to educate children for life and eternity, we must open doors that go beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic, and recognize the talents God has given each child. These talents may include sports, music, drama, or the visual arts ” The show was a great success! Last year Mr. Barker’s 6th grade drama class introduced improvisation to the preschool students at the Harden Early Childhood Center. The 6th grade class delighted and entertained the preschoolers by performing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. What made this play unique was the 4 year old students were cast as the dwarfs “The children chosen to participate in the play were excited to tell their parents about the performance when they got home that evening. These parents came in the next morning sharing how thrilled their children were. All the 4 year olds were ver y engaged,” said Mrs. Elenz, HECC teacher. According to all the HECC teachers and staff, “The dwarfs stole the show.”

One day the students had a ver y special guest, Smokey the Bear, drop in and share the importance of fire safety The children’s faces expressed total surprise as the huge furr y bear walked into the park at the HECC Smokey’s friend Mr. Fireman shared some ver y important tips on how to be safe The kids learned what to do in different emergency situations. Their favorite part was hugging Smokey the Bear and having their picture made with him! As Smokey was escorted out, five year old Daute asked, “ Where is his home and where is he going now?” Mrs. Thornhill replied, “I think he is going back to the forest!”
