HAT’S OFF! TO THE LADY OF THE BLUES Connie Lush has graced the stage of many prestige venues, including The Albert Hall, played festivals all over the world, but this lady’s feet are both still very much on the ground. What you see is what you get with Connie; a Liverpool girl with a passion for music, a love for her city and all with her husband and bass player, Terry.

Where did the fascination of hats come from? That was most definitely from my mum and Aunt Lily. They were so glamorous. They would dress up to the nines and always wore hats. It was years later when someone commented on my hat saying I looked just like my mum, and it clicked that I had inherited the trait.

Is there anywhere you’d love to play that you haven’t? More festivals. I LOVE playing festivals and I would love to go back to Ronnie Scotts with my own band. Is there anything you’d like to do before you finally hang up your hat? (See what I did there?) Yes, I will probably make a jazz record at some point, I have been asked but the time was never quite right. As I mentioned before, I’d love to go back to Ronnie Scotts with the band. Terry and I have had a blast living the life we live, and the hat is staying firmly on my head for some time to come!

Hio t

Did you want to be anything other than a singer? Yes, I wanted to be an artist, a painter that is, but I was told directly that art school was out of the question as we couldn’t afford it. I would love to design my own material and have it printed and hope that one day I may get the opportunity to do it.

Tell me something about yourself that nobody knows. I collect sound-bytes/sound effects, whatever you want to call them. Things like cartoon farts, doors opening and slamming, tug boats (I love boats). I particularly like calming sounds like tropical rainforests and waves lapping gently on the beach. It drives Terry round the bend!

Did you ever learn to play an instrument? I wanted to learn piano but lessons were expensive and besides which after a few lessons I gave up.. Wish I hadn’t

Where did the blues influence come from? To me, everything is blues, blues is the mother of all music. My mum loved Ray Charles, although she mostly bought his commercial stuff. I preferred classic Ray Charles, his very early work. I remember someone giving me an album of his early music and that was me, gone. I loved it.

Where did you meet Terry? We met in the Cavern, the original Cavern. I’d gone to watch a rock band; I was there in my cut off denims and fish net stockings (the shame of it!). Terry was in one of the archways and as I walked past he grabbed me and kissed me. A little later on he came over and lamely asked me to mind his cloakroom ticket. I fell for him instantly, it was love at first sight. Terry took a bit longer. I pretty much did all the running, I even asked him to marry me! He is my partner in life and business and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Ph oto gr

Have you always written your own music or did you begin with covers? No, I started with covers from the likes of Chaka Khan, Rufus and Little Feet. The writing came later.

EVER WONDERED ‘WHAT'S IT LIKE IN LIVERPOOL?’ MARC KENNY’S NEW SONG TELLS US A brand new single which promotes Liverpool as a destination was released on Cavern Records on November 19 at the world famous Cavern Club. ‘What’s It Like In Liverpool’, written and recorded by Liverpool musician Marc Kenny, includes a music video which features many key Liverpool attractions including the UNESCO World Heritage site, The Albert Dock, The Cavern, The Beatles Story and Mersey Ferries. In its first few days of release the video has garnered nearly 150,000 hits worldwide! The song was inspired by a trip that Marc took to China where he found himself thinking about his hometown and loved ones. It is on course to be adopted by city partners including Marketing Liverpool who see it as a creative and unique destination marketing tool. Chris Brown director of Marketing Liverpool says “Liverpool is a city that stirs people’s emotions and that’s exactly what’s so strong about Marc’s song and the video. As well as being extremely catchy, we see it as a great insight into what people feel about Liverpool, whether they are native or not. It’s a creative marketing tool when we go out internationally to talk about the city.”

The single ‘What’s It Like In Liverpool?’ is available to download from iTunes, Amazon and Google Play and CDs are available for purchase from The Cavern Club and www. whatsitlikeinliverpool.com Marc recently performed his song to an international delegation from Visit Britain at the travel trade event VIBE that Liverpool hosted for the first time on October 15th. As a result, Visit Britain have asked to use the song to promote the forthcoming ExploreGB, which the city plays home to for the first time in March 2016 and will see over 300 international travel trade buyers descend on the city for the high profile tourism event. Marc says “The response to ‘What’s It Like In Liverpool?’ has been amazing. It’s inspired by the city that I come from and love and am so glad that others see it in the positive and passionate way I felt when I was writing it.” Marc will be launching the single in New York on 26 November when it will get its first international play at The Liverpool Bar near Times Square just after the famous Thanksgiving Parade. Liverpool is in the midst of a FUNK REVIVAL, and there’s one band leading the way. Galactic Funk Militia are a 12 piece Funk, Hip Hop and Dance band with tunes so infectious that your body bursts into an uncontrollable groove from the very first note. GFM are true purveyors of good times with ultra cool horns, the funkiest of electric guitars and quickfire rap gymnastics combining to create some absolute dance floor smashers. The undeniably soulful tone of Lead vocalist Amber Kuti takes the funk in to the stratosphere. Back down on earth The Buz guest columnist Liam Pickup caught up with Galactic Funk Militia to find out more about the band behind the groove. (Answers from Matt Mook Mak, band leader and chief potato peeler) LP: Hey Guys, we’re dying to find out more about the band, talk us through your line up..... Well we don’t travel lightly put it that way! ha ha There’s drums, rappers, bass, synths, horns, electric guitars, percussion... and an amazing lead singer, Amber Kuti. We’re a petty big band, but you really need that to generate that badboy Funk. I think so, anyway. It’s a lot of fun going out on stage in a huge gang. That energy just builds and builds so it’s pouring off the sides of the stage, until the crowd are getting covered it in. That’s what we like. We got together in April this year, so it’s still all a fairly new adventure for us, and one we’re all enjoying a lot! LP: Where does a band name like Galactic Funk Militia come from? It just popped into my head one day a few years back and stayed there, trying to get my attention. It’s a pretty badass name, huh? Ha ha. I put up a Facebook page under that name in 2010 and forgot about it for a bit. The name just seems fun to me, energetic, and conjures up such a potent image of this ragged band of Hippie Space-Funk Rebels... it’s a good fit. I love anything sci-fi, otherworldly or cosmic. Funk heads always seem to just love space and sci-fi. There’s a lot of Afrofuturism in the Funk aesthetic, I guess. It’s the Sun Ra inheritance. LP: There’s so many of you in the band, how did you all meet? I kinda went on a mission at the start of the year to put the band together. I had an idea, a bunch of songs, and I’d had the name banging around my head for a while, as I say. What I didn’t have was a band ha ha – and, well, I got very, very lucky to be honest in terms of getting the perfect people for the job. Some of us had played together before doing other things, and so I knew I wanted to work with these people. This was going to be our chance to really cut loose and do the sort of thing we really wanted. The

time was just right to go for it. (Lead singer) Amber came to us by recommendation from some very good friends. She’s just an absolute star talent, she has the most amazing voice and the best thing is that it’s utterly unique and distinct, it’s totally hers. The first time I heard Amber’s voice working the songs I’d been working on, it was as if they went from monochrome into full colour! It was a defining moment for GFM. There were no auditions for singers required after that. Amber’s voice is our emissary into the hearts and minds of our audience, while we sneak around the back and go for your ass! The rest of the band came together in similar sorts of ways. As I say, we’ve been very lucky to get people on board who are all serious players. A lot of my first choices just immediately said, “Yes!” Some were discovered out in the wild on ridiculous nights of debauchery that we won’t talk about here. We have folks who’ve been part of the Liverpool groove scene for a fair bit, folks who’ve played with members of P Funk... Basically, this is just a gang of really amazing players, and beautiful people with it. It’s been a suspiciously easy fit musically and personally, it’s all just been very fluid and very magical. So far so good! (touches wood). LP: So, lots of bands get together and don’t really have an idea of the music they want to create until they start working together. With you guys it all seems to be so tight, did you always know that you where going to be hinged in funk? Oh yes this was always going to be a Funk band. This was our chance to put together the band that we would want to go and see, to combine all of our favourite flavours of Funk and go with them wherever they took us. Of course, a big part of that was getting the right players and setting the right vibe. I had a very clear sense of where I wanted this band to go, and then these great musicians came and breathed actual life into it all. It’s astonishing how it’s all gone down really. One of the greatest strengths of Funk is that it allows for a very broad range of musical options, you can go almost anywhere with it. Sometimes we go for a bouncy, swinging kind of Funk; sometimes we go in a bit darker, a bit rockier, and dig out a bit of that Funkadelic vibe; sometimes we go ridiculous, and start playing stupid, heavy technofunk jams, if we feel a crowd needs absolutely finishing off and wearing out. LP: What is it about funk that speaks to people? Funk is utterly infectious, utterly irresistible. It’s enriching and fun, but there’s more to it than that. You can’t understand Funk unless you understand its story, the communities it came from, the ongoing struggle for social justice, peace and equality that goes hand in hand with it. Funk is about having a good time even if the world is falling down around you. It’s about facing up to the bad stuff in the world with a smile on your face and a wiggle on your hips, and not being beaten down. It’s transcendent! Funk is definitely back on the rise in the public consciousness again. Love or hate it, Uptown Funk has helped that. Mark Ronson had George Clinton with him at Glastonbury this year, that was extremely cool to see. Kendrick Lamar’s latest album is full of G-Funk flavours. But Funk is also doing pretty well on its own terms regardless, it always is. You slap on a good Funk tune in any club, people dance. End of story! haha LP: Liverpool appears to be playing a large part in the FUNK REVIVAL that’s sweeping the UK, why do you think this is? Can you recommend any other local bands that fans of your music should check out?

Liverpool has always been a very funky town. It’s our ports that some of the earliest soul and funk music came through into the UK, way back in the mists of time. The city is absolutely full of funky music and, to be fair, it has been for a good long time! Back in the day there was the Shakti (we have one of them performing with us actually haha). The Hat Band always smashed it to the Moon and back. And I miss seeing the Elementals perform, they were a great band! Carrying the baton today, to name just a quick-fire few, you have The Soul Rays, The Blowback Horns, Amique... there’s just lots and lots. We’re all pretty pally, there’s a good sense of collaboration, which really helps the scene come together. There’s enough Funk for everyone! I’ve heard some whispers about there maybe being quite a big deal made out of Funk at next year’s Threshold Festival, but I’ve probably said too much already! For me, all this is a dream come true. I’ve been beating the drum for Funk for as long as I can remember. It’s great to see such enthusiasm for it, and to be a part of making Liverpool the true spiritual home of UK Funk. LP: You’re supporting festival regulars RIOT JAZZ for their Liverpool album launch, do GFM have any festival plans this year? We’re a bit out of time for 2015, I think! haha We had a fantastic gig in August headlining one of the stages at LIMF (Liverpool International Music Festival), that was a riot. What I don’t think a lot of people know is that it was our first ever gig, that’s how new we are! Also how cheeky we are too, and I guess, lucky! I keep saying it, but we have had some good luck. We’re lucky to have a lot of support from people on the scene here, Liverpool has such a positive and loving music scene generally.

We’re looking forward to being busy bees next summer with festivals, a lot of those should be getting boxed off over the next few months and we’ve had some exciting chats with people, so fingers crossed there’s plenty of people out there who like dancing their tits off to serious Funk. LP: Where can readers of TheBuz catch Galactic Funk Militia next? Our next gig is on 28th November at 24 Kitchen Street in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle. We’re supporting the amazing RIOT JAZZ, as you say, they’re launching their new album there and it’s going to be an amazing night. There are still tickets so people should definitely get on it. [https://www.facebook.com/ events/188596908141221/] After that, we’ve got a gig in January that we’ve been asked to keep under wraps for now and after that we’ll be playing at a fantastic new night in February called [Lost Inhibitions] at Constellations in Liverpool. It’s the very first one ever and sounds like it’s going to be ridiculous amounts of fun. LP: And did we hear mention of some releases coming out? Yes, we have a five-track album that we somehow managed to do in a mad 24 hour mission at Parr Street Studios. We’re really proud of it and will be releasing the first song, DANCE FLOOR GRINDER, on Sat 21st November. That one’s a definite crowd- pleaser, it’s pretty exciting! LP: Thanks for speaking with us today Mook, if you could leave readers with one message what would it be? I’m not one for being concise, you know? How about this: “Funk is good for you”. I like that, it says a lot in a few words. I might get a t-shirt made. That and “Check out www.GalacticFunkMilitia.com”. Thank you! :) Keith Hitchmough Photography

Tequila are a guitar/bass covers duo. The guys have worked together since the turn of the millennium, playing thousands of venues all over Great Britain. A modern light show and various PA systems ensure no room is to big or to small. Tequila are predominantly a function band playing weddings and corporate events but you can still catch them on the local Merseyside music scene where they spent so many years learning there trade. Their set covers most generes of music from the rock and roll classics from the 50’s and 60’s right up to the modern day chart songs and they always deliver a high energy show and are eager to please whatever crowed they are faced with. Tequila can offer a complete wedding package that includes DJ’ing, swing sets, and of course a dance set from the lads themselves.

DAVY IS NO FOOL Liverpool born entertainer, Davy Edge took to Facebook to showcase his poetry and in doing so, has become a founding member of new band, Ship of Fools writes guest contributor, Clair Oneil. He trained at the Elliot Clarke Performing Arts College, in the city, before working as a professional musician and shares the same birthplace as John Lennon, Oxford Street Maternity Hospital, making him a true scouser. Edge has a list of television and theatre credits to his name including Coronation Street and Brookside, and roles such as Robbie in Stags and Hen’s, and Mickey in Blood Brothers. Until recently he played the role of Gerald Gardiner in Davy Kirby and Nicky Allt’s, Brick up the Mersey Tunnels, at Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre, but had to decline reprising the part this year due to ill health. However he found solace in writing and his poems caught the attention of fellow musician and poet Keith Wilson, of local band,The Scaffold. He contacted Edge about joining the ensemble of creatives he had already brought together including classically trained musician, Rachel Nicholas, who plays violin, viola and piano, and actor/musician, Roy Brandon on saxophone and flute. Ship of Fools performed recently at the Heswall’s Art Festival on the Wirral. Describing themselves as rock ‘n’ droll, the band combines poetry, music and vocal harmony. Edge said: “Ship of Fools is a creative platform for us all. It gives me a chance to perform my poetry and to play original songs. Creativity is what we are all about really”. Ship of Fools are currently in rehearsals and future gig’s are planned.

The Buz recently caught up with Davy to ask a few questions about his life, music and his past. When did you first learn to play guitar? What/who inspired you to learn? My Dad taught me ukelele when I was nine. I was a big fan of Simon and Garfunkel. When I was thirteen, I heard the acoustic based ‘Best of T.Rex’, which was the best of early Tyrannosaurus Rex...I bought a Terada acoustic, and armed with Bert Weedon’s play in a day book, I set about learning. I bought my first electric, aged fourteen on hearing the opening riff to ‘Layla’. What was the name of your first band and who was in it? My first band, aged thirteen, was Glass Hammer. The guitarist, Keith Moore, had been playing for two years, so I watched him like a hawk, and learned as I went along! Paul Burgess on bass, and Neil Johanson on drums made up the rhythm section. We covered Slade,T.Rex and Wishbone Ash stuff and played our first gig at St Peter and Paul’s Youth Club, Stoneycroft on 30th December 1971. When did you write your first song? My first self-penned song was called ‘Misty Morning’, when I was thirteen. It was laden with Tolkinesque imagery and pleaded with the listener to open their spiritual eyes to life. I remember rhyming morning with yawning and dawning and feeling pretty pleased with myself! You are a great poet. Do the words come before the melody when writing a song? Thank you! I approach lyric writing in a different way to poetry, as the two are different beasts. Lyrics tend to be obvious and accessible to the listener. They tell the story. Sometimes, I’ll hear a melody in my head to which I will give a working lyric. The tune and the lyric fall together as I go along. I allow myself a little more luxury and licence with poetry, as I love imagery and word-play. Do you ever revisit a song and update it? Once I’ve written a song, I’m either happy with it, or I’m not. I’ve taken a couple of the old Hotel UK songs and reworked them for acoustic guitar. A good song will stand up on a guitar or a piano alone! Who would you most like to sing to? What song would you sing? I always had a fantasy about singing ‘Goodnight L.A’. to a packed Dodgers’ Stadium! Is there anyone particular that you would like to sing one of your songs? I’d love Rod Stewart to cover Goodnight L.A. I think he’d make a great job of it! What is your favourite time of day to write? I prefer to write in the wee small hours of the morning. There are fewer distractions. The telephone is silent, and I can focus fully on my work. I write until midday every day. It’s become a ritual, now! I also enjoy sitting in the garden on a sunny afternoon jotting down ideas! You recently played Broken Boy, a self penned number live at The Floral Pavilion. What is the song about and how did you come to write it? Broken Boy was written in 2000 after the break-up of a seven year relationship. Not all of my songs are auto-biographical, but this one had a profound effect on me. I was undiagnosed bipolar at the time, and I felt an indescribable emptiness...which, of course, was bound to come out in my music. Where can we see you perform? Due to chronic hip issues, I no longer gig as I used to. I am, however, to be found at the Pen and Wig, Harrington Street, of a Monday evening, where I perform a couple of my songs with the wonderful Scallywag.

Lyn’s role in the charity is to develop relationships between corporate supporters, organisations, and, to raise funds through high calibre events. She also to works with the successful committees of volunteers they have in the Northwest Region, helping them to raise funds and raise the profile of the charity.

HOW CAN WE HELP?

You can help by putting on an event, a car boot sale, run a marathon, sponsor your friends and colleagues at work, do something in work to raise funds, the list is endless, and every penny counts. Lyn is looking to form volunteer committees in Wirral, Chester, North Wales - ladies committees etc and would be delighted to speak to anyone who would like to learn more about becoming a Variety volunteer.

Email: northwest@variety.org.uk

Lyn supported Variety, the Children’s Charity for over 20 years as a volunteer prior to becoming the Development Director, as she believed then, and still does now, that Variety is the best Children’s Charity in the world. It has helped sick, disabled and disadvantaged children in the UK for over 65 years. “It’s a privilege to see just how much Variety, the Children’s Charity helps change the lives of not only children less fortunate than others but their families, and siblings in many cases, and I always feel so very lucky that I get to see the joy, excitement, and freedom that help from Variety brings to families who would have no way of getting that help without its support”. Variety, helps with specialised equipment, wheelchairs, hoists, children’s hospices, children’s hospitals and individuals, from new born to 19 years. They are most famous for their wonderful Sunshine Coaches that take children on special fun days out, school trips, pick ups from homes, and the curriculum in schools. “The money is raised through the wonderful support of kind volunteers who dedicate time and effort by fund raising for the charity, money is also raised through corporate sponsorship, pledges, large and small companies, schools, individuals etc... Anyone can help raise funds and we are always so very grateful for that support”. Variety, the Children’s Charity, is registered in England and Wales (No 209259) and in Scotland (No SC038505).

SIMPLY DYLAN A MUSICIAL JOURNEY THROUGH THE CAREER OF ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST ICONIC SINGER-SONGWRITERS BIGGEST UK SHOW TO DATE ANNOUNCED BANK HOLIDAY SUNDAY 29 MAY 2016 THE AUDITORIUM AT ECHO ARENA LIVERPOOL A TRIBUTE TO BOB DYLAN, NOT A BOB DYLAN TRIBUTE Following a nationwide tour earlier this year including a sold out show at the Epstein Theatre; Liverpool based artist John O’Connell will be bringing Simply Dylan to The Auditorium at Echo Arena Liverpool on Sunday 29th May (Bank Holiday weekend) to celebrate the 75th Birthday of Bob Dylan. Simply Dylan is John O’Connell’s personal exploration and celebration of the rich and diverse work of Bob Dylan and is as straightforward as the title suggests: no frills, no gimmicks, no pretense, no lookalikes, no carbon copy. However this is no ordinary interpretation of Bob Dylan, this is a remarkable and exceptional project which promises to delight Dylan fans young and old and to ignite a new wave of passion for one of the world’s most prodigious songwriters. John O’Connell (formerly of Groundpig) who leads Simply Dylan, is a rare talent who has had his name indelibly written in to the tapestry of Liverpool’s music scene, has collaborated with other highly reputable musicians from the city to form his Dylan Band. It is their precise playing and high energy renditions of Dylan’s work from the 1970s onwards which has gathered momentum and generated incredible interest. From a modest project recognizing Dylan’s 70th Birthday in 2011 Simply Dylan has gone from selling out the Cavern Club 7 times over to receiving fantastic reviews from Press across Europe with Louder Than War calling Simply Dylan ‘..A show that every Bob Dylan fan should see!’. John O’Connell said: ‘Simply Dylan endeavours to focus on detail and colour performing some of Dylan’s more challenging songs; bringing his lyrical content and story-telling alive.”

So if you haven’t heard of Simply Dylan already. You might just need to check them out. Take a bow, John’. Flotation Suite “John is a very talented singer songwriter who travelled with me on tour. He captivated audiences with his excellent voice and guitar playing...” Stephen Bishop “I went to see Johnny O’Connell playing Simply Dylan at the Cavern Liverpool and it was absolutely stunning. Johnny is one of the most talented musicians I have come across and his Dylan set is effortlessly brilliant.” Peter Hooton, The Farm “Simply Dylan … this guy is different, he’s not an impersonator, more an interpreter and an accomplished musician and singer to boot. “ John Baldwin, Desolation Row Information Service To book tickets log on to www.echoarena.com Call the Echo Arena Box Office on 0844 8000 400*

GLADE - FRESH FUNKY BLUES Glade is a professional, energetic duo comprising of Glyn Williams (China Crisis, The Revellers) and Jade Tremarco (The Gary Murphy Band, Vesbim Floyd). With a combined 40 years experience in the music industry, Glade have stripped everything back to the roots of acoustic soul and improvisation. With influences from Ray Charles, Little Richard and Aretha Franklin to Stevie Nicks, Elton John and Seal, Glade appeal to many audiences across the North West. Having been brought up on early 80’s electro hip hop, playing keyboards, piano and synthesisers from the age of nine was a clear indication music was going to be prevalent in Glyn’s life. He studied at Sandown College of Performing Arts in Liverpool obtaining a diploma in Jazz Commercial Music. Business really took off in 1999 beginning with a series of tours with Liverpool band The Real People providing support slots for David Bowie and Nelly Furtado. Glyn then moved on to a more settled role with 80’s Liverpool band China Crisis touring with the likes of OMD, Spandau Ballet, The Christians and Belinda Carlisle performing to thousands in the Echo Arena, O2 Indigo Arena and overseas. In 2001 he was also part of a Wirral based band Pechenga writing and performing for major record company showcases in L.A and New York, performing for Sony, BMG, Universal and Warner Brothers. “…working with Jade is a logical progression; a fusion of electro / soul / rock is an exiting new venture and lethal combination”. “Glade is really still in it’s infancy and I can’t wait to take it to the next level. Glyn is a true artist in every sense of the word and I am so thankful that he wanted to collaborate with me.” Jade said. Listening to the sounds of Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, The Who, Madonna, Supertramp, and Queen (amongst others) gave Jade all the tools needed to focus her energies on writing songs from the age of eleven. The Gary Murphy Band gave her the opportunity to perform on stage with them and local legends including Brian “Saxophone” Jones from The Undertakers, Billy Kinsley from The Merseybeats and The Christians to name but a few, from the age of thirteen, helping her grow as a musician. She is now part of the band and has recently performed at her twelfth International Guitar Festival of Great Britain with them. Joining Vesbim’s Pink Floyd “The Wall” Live Show has shown Jade that the formula for writing songs literally ‘from the heart’ can eventually produce one thing; a masterpiece. The show has just finished it’s first tour and plans to take the tour on the road in 2016. Until now Jade has only dipped her toe in the songwriting pool but all that is about to change. With her new branding, Jade is set to release a self penned EP in Spring 2016 of totally new material drawing on blues, rock and funktry (funk/country) influences with fellow musicians Glyn Williams and Michael Deakin (Munch). CHECK OUT www.jadetremarco.com FOR THE LATEST NEWS AND UPDATES OF WHERE YOU CAN CATCH GLADE PLAYING.

EMMA STEVENS Emma Stevens is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Guildford, Surrey. Her single Riptide from her first album Enchanted, was an iTunes Single of the Week in 2013 with in excess of 150,000 downloads. Emma describes her music as sparkly folk pop. Our Editor, Diane Tremarco, caught up with Emma ahead of her appearance at Thornton Hall Village Club and Bar on Saturday December 12th 2015.

“The thing is, it’s all about being true to yourself. Musically, artistically, be YOU - regardless of what people think”. 1. This quote, taken from your site, really sums you up. You seem very grounded, natural and someone a lot of us can all relate to. Has the music industry tried to change you, tried to mold you into a more commercial version of yourself? Thank you so much - but you missed out head strong! The answer is yes, and the second those signs started showing I ran! It’s so important to keep hold of who you are and not let anyone try and change you. 2. I read somewhere that you love to surf, and in a few songs, you speak of being on a beach with your guitar. When did your love of the beach/sea begin? I was tiny! I’ve aways been really into swimming from a young age and made countless trips to Cornwall as a child. 3. You enjoyed success as a songwriter for a year before we knew you as a singer. Was there a defining moment that changed your career path? There was. I didn’t have the confidence in myself then to have a career as an artist. I didn’t think I was good enough. My Mum and I would argue about it because she was constantly encouraging me to follow my heart and do it regardless of what I thought because she claimed I had a uniquely emotive voice. I didn’t believe her. It actually took losing her to cancer to realise how short life is and how we have to follow our calling in life. She deeply inspired me. Along with her my fellow co-witer Charlie Midnight was always encouraging me to be an artist when we wrote together. 4. Your talented Mum, Tina, designed the cover of your first album, Enchanted, before she died. It was initially released as four EP’s, each of the covers fitting together to make the full album cover. Was there a hidden meaning to this or was it simply a rather beautiful, artistic project? Thank you so much. I wanted it to be an exciting unveiling of the final artwork that made my album. Each EP cover (Album quarter) tells a story and I wanted people to really appreciate the art work, so by releasing my music in stages along with the art work it helped that happen. I was also developing as an artist and writing the songs as I went. 5. On you album, Waves, you show us the depth of your musical versatility by playing guitar, piano, cello, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, percussion, and baritone guitar. Do you have a favourite? BANJO!!! No wait, ukulele.. No it’s got to be banjo. 6. I have to ask. What is it like having your own calendar? Was it fun to shoot? HAHA! It’s great until my family want to see it and then I cringe!!! 7. Have you met any of your idols? Not yet! Although I met Passenger (collaborated with him and supported him) and I really idolise his approach to the DIY artist route.

8. Can we buy your CD Waves on your website? Yes, you can, there are other goodies too. www.emmastevens.com 9. Emma, you are set to make our day (see what I did there?) by playing at Thornton Hough Village Club and Bar on Saturday December 12. How did that come about? Wooooo! I sent a newsletter out to my friends on the mailing list saying I was going to be doing five house gigs around December time and to email if they wanted to book me. One thing lead to another and I found myself booking a gig at Thornton Hough village Club! Bring it ON!!! 10. Have you visited Wirral before? I don’t believe I have, but I’ve toured a lot! 11. How will you spend Christmas? I’ve just moved in to my own place with my boyfriend.. I’m so excited about it - lots of countryside - it’s beautiful! So for the first time EVER we are hosting Christmas! 12. What will 2016 hold for Emma? Lots of exciting things, walks, sea side trips, recording album 3, and doing 3 performances on a cruise ship from Miami to Jamaica alongside the band Train, Rachel Platten and Shaggy! It’s going to be amazing!

MRS BUTLER We had the pleasure of meeting up with Lesley Butler to ask her a few questions about her acting career. For those of you who don’t know her, Lesley is the long suffering wife of Radio Merseyside’s Billy Butler. She is also one of the kindest, most genuine people on the planet. Nothing is too much trouble for Lesley and I have never heard anyone say a bad word about her. Lesley lives life in the fast lane and believe me, it’s fast. She will cram into a day what most people struggle to achieve in a week! How did you first get involved with acting? I did amature dramatics with the Everyman Youth Theatre before going to Barbara Johnston’s Stage School when I was young, Then about 25 years ago, I went to see Billy in a pantomime at the Floral Pavilion. I ended up backstage every night, we had a great time playing pranks on each other. It was coming to the end of the season and Paul Holliday, the manager at the time, suggested I audition for the pantomime the following year. So I did. I got the part as Princess So-Shy in Aladdin, not a particulaly apt name for me! Is it something you’d like to do full time? Absolutely! I’d love to do it full time but I would need a magic wand to make it happen! Do you find it hard to learn the lines? Generally, no. I sit down first and I read them all to myself, then I write out my lines and the lines beforehand, highlight them, and then read them over and over again. I then rope Billy into helping me, asking him to read the parts before my part, so I can read my lines back. For Cinderella, the current pantomime, I learnt my part in two weeks. Obviously not every play is like that, it depends. You’re in pantomime this Christmas at The Epstein as you mentioned. How does Panto compare to a standard play? I wouldn’t say easier but it’s definitely more fun! It’s a LOT of fun! It is easier to learn the lines, it has to be said. We have to ask, what’s he like in real life? He is an absolute gentleman. (note: we didn’t even need to mention his name - but for those who don’t know we’re referring to Calum Best!) His manners are impeccable; I walked into the room and he was sat in a chair as soon as he noticed me, he got up and asked me if I’d like to sit down. He didn’t even know me at that point! He’s also much nicer looking in real life too! What would consider your favourite play to date? Last Train to Auschwitz. I do like Red Skies too; both are written by Joan Turner. Sarah, the part I play, in Last Train to Auschwitz, is a movie star, full of her own importance, a bossy, strong lady who’s sister lives and works in her shadow. The play portrays her demise and highlights the role reversal between the star and her sister. Last Train ran at the Epstein for three nights last year and in order to improve my part, I made a trip to Auschwitz, Poland. On approach to the camp, I had no idea that it was Auschwitz I was looking at, it was huge. It was also very pleasant and I had a real sense of how the prisoners were tricked into thinking they could in fact “Work for Freedom”. It was horrific. The attrocities that went on are unimaginable, even standing in front of the evidence. One particular picture of a family getting off the train, unaware of the fate that lay ahead, made me cry. They believed they were having a shower, clean clothes and chance to survive. It is heartbreaking. Everyone knows the story - but not to that extent when you actually go there and you see what they went through. I hope I can channel what I have learn’t, all that emotion, into my character. Last Train to Auschwitz is on at the Floral Pavilion Theatre, Marine Prominade, New Brighton from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st February. Tickets: 0151 666 0000 or www.floralpavilion.com

EPSTEIN THEATRE The Epstein Theatre (formerly known as The Neptune) was originally opened as Crane’s Music Hall in 1911, and was a popular location for recitals and performances. It was renamed Crane Theatre in 1938. In 1967 the theatre was purchased from the Cranes by Liverpool Corporation, who decided that the theatre should be run by local people for local people and was named The Neptune Theatre. The Neptune also became a comedy club and after many years of uncertainty about the future of the theatre, it eventually closed in 2005. In July 2011, a £1million refurbishment of the theatre was completed which saw the Hanover Street venue brought up to 21st century standards and renamed ‘The Epstein Theatre’ in honour of former Beatles manager Brian Epstein, who guided the Fab Four from popular cellar act to global superstardom. The management contract was up for tender and was won by the well-established team behind Liverpool’s annual Sound City Music Festival. The Theatre was officially opened on Wed 9th May 2012. Now an independent company Epstein Theatre Ltd, the venue has grown to become of the key venues for arts and live entertainment in the city with a strong programme of comedy, plays, live music and children’s productions. The venue can also be hired out for private functions, weddings and conferences. Theatre Manager Rebekah Pichilingi said: ““We are committed to bringing our audience a diverse range of high-quality music and I can’t wait for them to hear all the wonderful concerts we have on offer. So don’t get left out in the cold, book your tickets now to avoid disappointment!” The Epstein Theatre continues to attract national and household names to the theatre as part of its regional and national tours – and this winter is no different with the diverse choice of shows and concerts on offer. A perfect early Christmas present for fans of the Fab Four, The Mersey Beatles Christmas Special on December 1 will perform all The Beatles’ Christmas number ones plus the solo Christmas hits. This festive feel-good concert on will have enough Christmas cheer to ensure you are Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time. With a remarkable resemblance to Kate Bush in vocal style and appearance, Maaike Brejiman returns to the Epstein after a hugely successful show in April 2015 to bring the music of Kate Bush live to the Epstein stage on 3rd December in Dreaming of Kate. Joined by her great live Band of Gypsies, Maaike will amaze audiences as she effortlessly performs songs spanning Kate Bush’s career. To finish the year off with a flourish, Liverpool band Space take to the Epstein stage on 4th December. One of the most iconic bands of the 90s, Space will perform their hits including Female of The Species, Neighbourhood, Me And You Versus The World, and Tom Jones. Plus there’s plenty to look forward to in 2016. Join the party on 5th February as four of the West End’s greatest leading men sing iconic songs from pop and musical theatre history. The 4Tunes is a brand new group of award-winning singers performing with amazing harmonies, fabulous vocals and fun personalities. From rousing operatic arias to powerful and beautiful ballads, this sensational male quartet boasts the finest collection of male voices to be heard for a very long time. Share an intimate evening of songs and stories with Howard Jones on 12th February. Howard, who burst onto the music scene in the early 80s with his pioneering synthesizers and thought provoking lyrics, shares behind the scenes stories and reveals the inspiration behind the songs from his 30-year career in this rare acoustic show. He is supported by Elise Yuill, a Devon-based singer songwriter who is fast becoming a recognised name in contemporary folk music. To tie in with the release of their brand new album, The Puppini Sisters will pop into the Epstein on 8th March as part of their Highlife Tour. The sisters, who have been award Gold and Platinum discs and count Prince Charles and Cyndi Lauper among their fans, will perform their own arrangements of classics from the 30s to 50s, jazzy reinventions of pop hits and self-penned original songs. Red hot multi award-winning blues group King King will rock the Epstein Theatre on 9th March with help from their special guest, Laurence Jones. Winners of the Best Band in the British Blues Awards for three years running, King King are on a royal roll and will perform their killer songs with true passion. NOW APPROACHING ITS 15TH YEAR, MD PRODUCTIONS SPRANG FROM THE AMBITION OF DANCER MIGUEL DOFORO. Growing up, he was inspired by artists like Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Prince, Janet Jackson and Madonna, and dreamed of staging his own spectacular shows. But finding somewhere to dance proved a hurdle. Doforo found his home city of Liverpool lacked facilities to experiment and express himself creatively and vowed to start his own business. MD Productions was born in 2001, building its reputation on an ethos of inclusivity, inspiration and passionate, inspirational entertainment. MD Productions’ dance classes tapped into major demand hosting classes seven days a week, Doforo’s dance group won early performances on Sunday Night Live at the London Palladium and Michael Jackson’s Killer Thriller Party. Later, the team became synonymous with Britain’s Got Talent, grabbing national attention with semi-final appearances in 2007, 2009 and 2013. As the business grew, Doforo split it into three key strands: a not-forprofit arm (MD Productions CIC); MD Productions Training Academy, which delivers a variety of classes to the public and in schools, youth and community centres; and MD Productions Artist Management and Entertainment Agency, which supports the group’s professional performers. Accessibility remains a cornerstone of the MD Productions story. Doforo speaks passionately about supporting and developing ‘rough diamonds’, and MD retains a strong community engagement aim, connecting with the elderly and helping them re-engage with the young. A core team of five work across the business, managing classes and productions, the CIC, special projects and MD’s innovative Emotions projects, while Vision, MD’s company dancers continue to perform locally, nationally and internationally.

With a ideology that says anyone, of any age, anywhere, with raw talent can perform, almost 1,000 dancers and performers have received training and support so far… Telephone: 0151 706 0463 Facebook: MD Productions Email: info@mdproductionsltd.com Twitter: @Mdproductionsmd Website: www.mdproductionsltd.com

SEVENTIES ROCK SPECTACULAR

AT THE FLORAL PAVILION

Within the space of a week this coming February two of the giants of seventies rock music will be celebrated at The Blue Lounge, the all-standing rock venue which forms part of the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton. On Saturday 6th February SeYes – tribute to prog rock giants YES - will take to the stage. The band – who are endorsed by Rick Wakeman himself are described in Classic Rock Magazine as “The UKs premier YES tribute band” and this show marks the first visit of the band to the Wirral for what promises to be a night to remember. Yes first achieved success in the 1970s with a progressive, almost symphonic style of rock music. They were distinguished by their use of mystical and cosmic lyrics, elaborate staging, and lengthy compositions, often with complex instrumental and vocal arrangements. Guitarist David Crilly said “It’s a real challenge to play this material and every member of the band needs to be on top of his game to make it work. It’s fantastic fun to play and we’re delighted with the results!” Although the band has been in existence for several years there was a major overhaul recently with additions of a new guitarist, drummer and singer to the line-up. The band made a few tentative ‘demo’ recordings and put a few clips out online and received a massive boost right away, in that they were invited to play at none other than Roger Dean’s exhibition in East Sussex (Dean is, of course, designer of the iconic YES album covers of the seventies). Dean was present for the gig and afterwards spoke about “this wonderful band”. On the back of that event SeYes have been offered a number of gigs around Europe. This show celebrates the classic period in the history of YES – that is, the 1971-79 era, so the audience can expect all the classics including Yours is No Disgrace, Siberian Khatru, Heart of the Sunrise and the WHOLE of the Close to the Edge album. Just a week later on Saturday 13th February MOTHERSHIP, described in the press as the ‘most authentic-sounding Led Zeppelin tribute in the UK’ will return to the Blue Lounge to present a brand new show. The band has been going for about six years now and will be known to many people across the region. But audiences can expect a show with a difference as the band have combined forces with VESBIM MEDIA to produce a multi-media event, including lasers, elaborate light show, projection and the voices of Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. (Regular visitors to the Floral Pavilion will already have witnessed the fantastic production values and visual displays of VESBIM MEDIA who produce Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ which has played the Pavilion several times now). The centrepiece of the show is, of course, two and a half hours of classic Led Zeppelin, including Black Dog, Kashmir, Achilles Last Stand, Rain Song, Whole Lotta Love and many more. The band played to a packed Blue Lounge last year and ticket sales are going very well again. You can see both bands in action on their respective websites: www. seyes.co.uk and www.zepmothership.com Tickets are available on the Floral Pavilion website www.floralpavilion. com Or by phone from their Box Office on 0151 666 0000

GOOD TIME FEEL GOOD ROCK www.clan-rock.com

Rock ‘n’ Roll was never meant to be taken seriously

A LITTLE BIT OF JAZZ Taking influences not only from the legendary “Jazz Manouche” (Gypsy Jazz) Guitarist, Django Reinhardt, but also from modern day Manouche Guitarists, traditional Spanish music, rock, country, classical and a host of other sources, Modjango have created a style encompassing the greatest aspects of each, and applied it to the Gypsy Jazz genre.

Modjango attempt to present a unique interpretation of Jazz Manouche, by incorporating many new elements into this hugely energetic and beautiful style. The very name “Modjango” (Modern Django) highlights their desire to build on the diversity, vibrancy and ingenuity of their sets, producing a sound that is quite simply unique.

The effect of this combination is simply astounding.

Further adding to their versatility, Modjango can often be heard performing with an eclectic range of other musicians, enhancing the musical dynamic over some hugely diverse material. Every set is vastly different to the last, each adding something new to the style.

Father and son duo, Roy and Paul Gregory, have built a large and loyal following throughout the UK and Europe. Their performances go from strength to strength, as do their reviews: “I frequently found myself closing my eyes and tuning out all thoughts and senses except my ears. Highly recommended” - The Evening Standard, Modjango have been performing nationwide for a number of years, regularly featuring in a wide variety of events, from The International Guitar Festival of Great Britain and Southport Jazz Festival, to the Bude Festival, and regular appearances at the famous “Le Quecumbar”, Battersea, London, renowned for hosting the very best that Jazz Manouche has to offer from around the globe. Recently featured twice on the Bay TV Liverpool “Arts Alive” production, Modjango continue to strive toward a greater general exposure of the Gypsy Jazz style, and all that it has to offer, both to music lovers and musicians alike. The great influence that Django Reinhardt has had on generations of guitarists is often greatly underestimated; he was truly unique, and shattered musical boundaries, paving the way for future achievements in a vast array of styles.

The authenticity of their sound is enhanced by the genuine nature of the instruments used; hand crafted Selmer-style Guitars (by renowned Luthiers, John Le Voi and the late, great Dave Hodson) produce a beautiful, balanced, vintage tone, essential for this style. All of these elements combined result in genuinely unique, hugely exciting performances; once you’ve seen them, you’ll never forget them. Unmissable. Modjango currently perform every Thursday at The Baltic Fleet, 33A Wapping, Liverpool, from 8.30pm, and at a wide range of other venues, festivals, and private events. JC & The Two-Steps are a six piece professional band whose individually crafted covers have taken them all over the UK and as far afield as France and Sweden Brought together by a shared love of music, JC & The Two-Steps play a range of venues, from clubs to corporate events, from weddings to hotel and bar openings. In their early twenties, all six members of the band are full-time musicians and have collective experience of more than 60 years involved in professional music. Their energetic performances crackle with energy and individuality - they love what they do, and their mission is to ensure that the people who see them go home happy. With 700 shows under their belt, the band have spent the past three years crafting their trade gaining a unique understanding of what audiences want. Playing across Europe has honed their understanding of what different cultures want – hence their massive set list of hundreds of pop, rock, soul, funk, ska, reggae and hip-hop classics. It's not all bout the covers though, JC have been spending time - some of it in the Scottish highlands - writing their own material and feel that it's only a matter of time before it's released. JC & The Two Steps are: Sam Broadbere - keyboards, vocals, trombone Jack Clarke - vocals, percussion, saxophone Brad Done - guitar, vocals Connor Hodgson - guitar, vocals; Sean McMinn-Davies - bass, vocals, trumpet Alex Randles - drums, vocals.
