WHAT CAUSES AGE-RELATED HEARING LOSS? Age-related hearing loss, medically known as presbycusis, is a prevalent form of sensorineural hearing impairment that emerges as individuals advance in years. It manifests as a gradual, progressive condition, typically affecting both ears with varying degrees of severity. The causes of age-related hearing loss are multifaceted and encompass a range of factors that include changes that include the following: 1. Changes in the Inner Ear Structures: The natural aging process is a primary instigator of age-related hearing loss. Over time, the inner ear's structures, particularly the cochlea, experience degenerative changes. This deterioration can involve damage to or the loss of hair cells, which are essential for translating sound vibrations into electrical signals processed by the brain. 2. Cumulative Noise Exposure: Lifelong exposure to loud sounds damages the delicate cochlear hair cells, accumulating over time to result in hearing impairment. 3. Genetic Factors: Genetic predisposition plays a role. Individuals with a family history of hearing loss are more susceptible to developing it as they age. 4. Vascular Changes: Alterations in blood flow and circulation to the inner ear can influence hearing. Reduced blood supply to the cochlea can lead to oxygen and nutrient deprivation, damaging hair cells and auditory nerves. 5. Exposure to Ototoxic Medications: Certain drugs, such as antibiotics, diuretics, and chemotherapy agents, can be ototoxic, potentially harming the inner ear and exacerbating age-related hearing loss. 6. Changes in the Central Auditory System: Age-related transformations in the central auditory pathways, responsible for processing sound signals in the brain, can further contribute to hearing difficulties. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is generally irreversible. Once the delicate cochlear hair cells or auditory nerve cells are damaged or lost, they cannot regenerate or self-repair. What happens if you do not wear hearing aids that are prescribed to you, for your hearing loss? The implications of a hearing loss diagnosis and the choice not to use prescribed hearing aids can be profound. It's crucial to understand the potential consequences: 1. Communication Difficulties: Hearing loss makes comprehending spoken conversations, especially in noisy

settings or amidst multiple speakers, challenging. 2. Social Isolation: Untreated hearing loss often leads to social withdrawal and isolation, as difficulties communicating with friends and family result in frustration, embarrassment, and loneliness. 3. Reduced Quality of Life: Previously enjoyed activities such as watching movies, attending gatherings, or engaging in hobbies that involve listening may become less enjoyable. 4. Cognitive Decline: Research suggests a connection between untreated hearing loss and cognitive decline, including an elevated risk of conditions like dementia. 5. Emotional Impact: Increased stress, anxiety, and depression can result from the struggle to hear and communicate effectively, impacting mental well-being. 6. Relationship Strain: Hearing loss can strain relationships with loved ones and colleagues, as misunderstandings and communication difficulties lead to frustration and tension. 7. Decreased Job Performance: In a professional context, untreated hearing loss can impede job performance, hindering career advancement due to challenges in hearing instructions, participating in meetings, and communicating with peers and clients. 8. Safety Concerns: Hearing loss can jeopardize one's ability to hear critical environmental sounds like alarms, sirens, and approaching vehicles, posing safety risks in various scenarios. 9. Increased Risk of Falls: Older adults with hearing loss face an augmented risk of falls, primarily due to difficulties in hearing balance cues or warnings from others, leading to accidents. 10. Progressive Hearing Loss: Neglecting treatment can result in a further decline in hearing ability, as some forms of hearing loss worsen over time. It is imperative to recognize that hearing aids are effective tools for managing hearing loss, substantially enhancing the ability to hear and communicate. Modern hearing aids are discreet and technologically advanced, making them user-friendly and less obtrusive than older models. If you suspect you have hearing loss, consulting with an audiologist for a comprehensive evaluation is advisable. Taking proactive steps to address hearing loss can significantly contribute to maintaining a higher quality of life and overall well-being.

MAKE 2024 YOUR BEST YEAR EVER WITH SOLUTION FOCUSED HYPNOTHERAPY Do you have a vision of how you want your life to be in 2024? Do you want to achieve your goals, but you don't know where to start? Do you struggle with stress, anxiety, or low mood? You are not the only one. Many people find it difficult to stick to their New Year's resolutions. They set goals that are too vague or unrealistic, like losing weight, quitting smoking, or saving money. They dwell on their problems, not their solutions. They lose motivation or confidence when they encounter challenges. But there is a better way to enhance your well-being and happiness in 2024. A way to achieve your goals in a positive and effective way, without feeling anxious or overwhelmed. A way to enjoy and relax the journey, not dread it. Hi, I'm Khalie, the creator of Active Minds Hypnotherapy. I'm a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist, wellness coach and fully qualified 200hrs IYN yoga teacher. I use a therapy that combines psychotherapy and hypnosis. I run my clinic at the Corner House Clinic in West Kirby where I meet clients in person. I also offer online sessions worldwide. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy therapy changes your brain by making it more flexible and adaptable. The therapy stimulates neuroplasticity, which is the ability of the brain to change itself. It reduces the activity of the part of the brain that triggers negative emotions, like fear, anger, and sadness. It increases the activity of the part of the brain that supports rational thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a cooperative process that focuses on what you want to achieve.

I also use hypnosis, a state of deep concentration, to reinforce the positive thoughts and suggestions that you create. Hypnosis is a natural and relaxing state that you may experience daily. Have you ever been so engrossed in your thoughts that you forgot about your surroundings, like when you read a book or watch a movie? That is hypnosis, a kind of trance. Sessions last for 50 minutes, and most people need four to six sessions to see results. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works for many issues, like anxiety, depression, stress, phobias, smoking, and weight loss. It can also help you to improve performance in sports and business by helping you to relax, focus, overcome barriers, and visualize goals. My approach is gentle and non-invasive, helping you to change your thinking and habits. Starting in January I will be running group weight management programs. They last for eight weeks and help you to reduce your stress and develop healthy habits. The groups are supportive and build your self-confidence as you regain control of your life. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can change your life in 2024. It can help you to reach your goals, improve your well-being, and increase your happiness. It can help you to make 2024 your best year ever. Why not give it a try? It may be the best decision you ever make. www.activemindshypnotherapy.com

THE HIDDEN REASONS BEHIND INEFFECTIVE NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS As the year draws to a close and we eagerly anticipate the arrival of a new one, many of us start thinking about the changes we want to make, the improvements we seek, and the resolutions we intend to set. It's an age-old tradition, the New Year's resolution, but it's also a practice that often leaves us feeling disheartened and defeated as we find ourselves unable to follow through. So, what makes New Year resolutions so ineffective, and how can we enhance our chances of success?
achievement within a specific timeframe. By example, a resolution or a goal, is to go on a diet (an action) to lose x stone or achieve a specific weight. An outcome would be to look fabulous on a beach in Greece in August and enjoy a healthier life afterwards. To achieve that you would eat more healthily and take more exercise (actions). You would track your progress (assessing milestones) by monitoring your weight, feeling fitter, being able to walk further or run faster or have more energy in your life.
The first crucial step in understanding this phenomenon is to recognize that a resolution is essentially a goal and there lies the problem, as we need to consider developing an outcome instead as it’s more powerful and meaningful. We often use goals to help us plan our lives, whether it's something as significant as buying a house, a car, or planning a holiday. When we want to achieve more radical change in our lives we need to think more about outcomes.
As we approach 2024, it's time to rethink how we set our intentions. Rather than making vague resolutions, let's adopt a more strategic and outcome-oriented approach. By setting outcomes or HUGGs and following those principles we can increase our chances of success and make 2024 a year of meaningful change.
To enhance our ability to bring about meaningful change, it is vital to engage our minds effectively. The mind operates differently than our spoken words, making it essential to think positively and avoid negative language when striving for change. Consider the shift from "giving up smoking" to "becoming a non-smoker." Language matters, and we must utilise it wisely. Our minds possess immense power, and they can achieve remarkable feats when trained, developed, and utilized correctly and they can craft great outcomes, or, as I like to call it, a "Huge Unbelievable Great Goal" (HUGG). To formulate an effective HUGG, you can ask yourself a series of questions: What do I want to achieve? • What criteria will measure my success? • Get specific: Where, When, What, and With whom? • Identify your resources: What do I need, what do I have, and what's missing? • Control: How much control do I have, how much do I need, and who can assist me? • Evaluate your environment: In which context are you operating, and what are the consequences of success or failure? • Consider the bigger picture: Do you have multiple outcomes, and do they align or clash? With these questions in mind, let's reconsider New Year Resolutions. What is it that we truly want to achieve in the coming year? We must be clear about the problems, issues, or challenges we wish to address. Defining these in 25 words or less can provide us with a clear starting point, a baseline from which we can measure progress. What distinguishes an outcome from a goal lies in the approach of how they are constructed or crafted. Goals can be interchanged with terms such as targets, milestones or objectives. On the other hand, an outcome, is something more significant. It needs more consideration as it has more meaning. An outcome engages the mind and emotions, so you are working towards a bigger

SIX TIPS TO LOOK AFTER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH THIS WINTER. My name is Anna, and I am a Counsellor/Psychotherapist based in Birkenhead. I specialise in helping people overcome anxiety and put an end to the constant cycle of overthinking. I know what it's like to be there because I was stuck in that awful cycle, too. The sessions are £55. Wintertime brings a fair few challenges to our mental and emotional well-being. The Christmas holidays can be difficult for many people, and lack of daylight can also impact mood. Here are some tips to help you navigate Winter and maintain your mental health. 1) Get outside in daylight to exercise for at least 15 minutes daily. Daylight helps your body produce vitamin D, vital for mood, and exercise boosts the body's production of feel-good endorphins. A brisk walk is ideal. The earlier you go outside, the better - daylight early in the day helps regulate the body's natural rhythms. 2) Connect with others People naturally tend to stay home more during the winter months, so staying connected with others is vital. Try to arrange face-toface meet-ups with friends and family, but if that's not possible, a catch-up over the phone or a check-in via text still helps. 3) Look after your budget. Christmas can be an expensive time of year, and it's easy to overspend, which can lead to anxiety in the New Year. Set a budget, be bold, and stick to it.
4) Balance busyness with rest We all face different challenges. Some people are overly busy and lurch from one job to the next with little time to rest. Others feel isolated or bored during the long Christmas break and might miss colleagues or their regular routine. Both being overbusy and not having enough to do can cause stress and anxiety, so I recommend reviewing what you have to do. If you need to drop a few things, find a way to delegate them or put them off. Or if you don't have much to do, plan a few things - meet up with friends or look for some volunteering opportunities. 5) Try to maintain a routine. Christmas holidays can be chaotic. Many people have extra time off work and visit family or have family visit them. This can lead to a lack of routine, which can be stressful, especially for children. Try to keep to at least some routine. For example, try to go to bed and wake up at roughly your usual time throughout the break. 6) Seek help if you need it. We all struggle sometimes, so don't hesitate to ask for help if you feel low or anxious. Sometimes, a chat with a trusted friend is enough, but if you need additional support, consider contacting a counsellor for help. For more tips, follow me on social media: @annapluckcounselling or check my website: www.annapluck.com anna@annapluck.com 07772 874 242
Look at low-cost options. For example, have a Secret Santa instead of buying gifts for everyone in your family. Or agree to spend the money you would have spent on presents on doing a fun activity together instead.

SARCOIDOSIS - THE UNSEEN STRUGGLES In a world where invisible illnesses often go unnoticed, it’s important to shed light on the experiences of individuals living with conditions like Sarcoidosis. This article aims to provide a glimpse into the daily struggles faced by Sarcoidosis sufferers, highlighting the significant impact it has on their lives. From sudden physical limitations to profound fatigue, joint pain, breathing difficulties, and memory loss, this chronic condition presents a myriad of challenges that can often go unnoticed by others. Sudden Impact - Your life changes: Imagine a simple task like getting up from a chair suddenly becoming impossible. For Sarcoidosis sufferers, this becomes a reality. The morning wake-up call can bring an even more daunting experience, as they find themselves pinned to the bed, paralysed by an unknown force. Even standing up can be excruciatingly painful, with sharp sensations shooting through their feet and legs, making walking a painful endeavour. Profound Fatigue: Imagine waking up every morning feeling as though you haven’t slept at all. Sarcoidosis sufferers experience a constant state of exhaustion, akin to the worst day of the flu. Their bodies feel heavy, every movement requires immense effort, and even the simplest tasks around the house can drain their energy reserves. It’s important to understand that their lack of activity is not due to laziness but a consequence of physical exhaustion. Joint Pain: Think back to the throbbing pain experienced during the flu, combined with the discomfort of a joint that lacks full mobility. Now imagine this pain spread throughout your entire body, with joints so stiff it feels as if they’re screaming. Sarcoidosis sufferers experience sudden, unpredictable pains anywhere and everywhere. On top of that, they endure burning sensations, muscle spasms, and the frustration of muscles giving way and refusing to work properly. Breathing: For those who suffer from asthma, the struggle for air is familiar. But for Sarcoidosis sufferers, it’s a constant battle. Imagine the sensation of someone very heavy sitting on your chest, making it difficult for you to breathe. That’s the reality for individuals with Sarcoidosis, who often face respiratory challenges that can be both frightening and exhausting. Memory Loss: Within the Sarcoidosis community, the term “brain fog” is used to describe the cognitive challenges experienced by sufferers. Memory loss, whether with or without Neuro Sarcoidosis, can be incredibly daunting and frustrating. Imagine suddenly forgetting how to spell simple words or struggling with basic arithmetic. The sense of disorientation is further heightened when simple tasks, like reading and comprehending a sentence, become distorted upon subsequent readings. Sufferers often describe these blank
16
WIRRAL WELL
BEING
spots in their memory as entirely vacant, and their ability to recall information can be slow or nonexistent. It’s akin to experiencing a faulty connection in a computer. Stress plays a significant role in exacerbating the symptoms of sarcoidosis. The immune system is tricked into perceiving stress as a foreign invader, leading to increased inflammation. It is crucial for sufferers to minimise stress as much as possible to prevent further complications. The emotional frustrations experienced by sarcoidosis sufferers are immense. The lack of understanding and absence of answers make them feel like failures every second of the day. Despite their best efforts, their bodies constantly remind them of the disease, preventing them from accomplishing even the simplest tasks. This sense of failure extends to their relationships, as they feel unable to meet the expectations of their families and loved ones. For many sufferers, life changed overnight. They lost their previous sense of normality and struggled to adjust to their new limitations. The uncertainty and inability to comprehend their own bodies leave them feeling helpless and confused. Without answers or guidance, they are left to navigate their disabilities and ever-changing symptoms alone. When sarcoidosis sufferers express their pain and discomfort, it is not mere complaining. They want their loved ones to understand the magnitude of their suffering. Though they may only share snippets of their struggles, each cry for help or plea for support comes from a place of unbearable physical and mental anguish. Many sufferers have endured years of doctor visits and endless tests, often resulting in inconclusive results or dismissive responses. This lack of validation leads to frustration and anger. Sarcoidosis may mimic other conditions, causing symptoms that appear similar but fail to yield positive test results. The medical community must recognise that negative tests do not negate the reality of a sufferer’s pain and disability. Sarcoidosis sufferers often fear being misunderstood, even by emergency service staff. There have been instances where individuals seeking help were turned away or left without proper care. In extreme cases, unnecessary surgeries have been performed, leading to tragic outcomes. It is crucial for medical professionals to familiarise themselves with sarcoidosis and its complexities to provide appropriate care and support. The silent struggle of sarcoidosis is one that demands greater awareness and understanding. Sufferers battle not only the physical symptoms but also the emotional toll of a disease that often goes unnoticed. It is essential for society, medical professionals, and loved ones to recognise the challenges faced by those living with sarcoidosis and extend their support and compassion.
EMBRACING NEURODIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE My name is Matthew Gleeson and I am the founder of Neallro, a neurodiversity consultancy firm based in Wirral. Our mission is to help organisations create more inclusive and accessible work environments that empower neurodiverse individuals. As someone who is neurodiverse myself, I understand the unique challenges and strengths that come with conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia and others. These brain differences, while not widely recognised or accommodated in the past, are a natural part of the diversity of the human experience. At Neallro, we partner with companies to conduct neurodiversity audits of their current policies, processes and culture. This allows us to identify barriers as well as opportunities to build a more neuroinclusive workplace. Some of the key areas we focus on include:
Training and education We deliver training to raise awareness and understanding of neurodiversity throughout the organisation. This fosters empathy and ensures inclusion efforts are sustained long-term. The benefits of building a neuroinclusive workplace are immense. Organisations report higher innovation, productivity and job satisfaction when they welcome neurodiverse perspectives. Employees feel valued for their talents and empowered to do their best work. At Neallro, we are proud to guide both global corporations and local businesses on this inclusion journey. By making workplaces more understanding of neurodiversity, we can unlock the full potential of employees and build a culture of belonging. If you are interested in learning more about our services, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We are passionate about creating work environments where everyone, regardless of neurotype, can thrive.
Job design and recruiting We ensure job descriptions are free of biased language and make jobs accessible to those who think or work differently. We also provide guidance on sourcing neurodiverse talent. Sensory needs We advise on providing accommodations like noise-cancelling headphones, flexible lighting or workspaces and sensory rooms. This removes distractions and helps employees thrive. Communication and meetings - We train organisations on clear, direct communication and provide alternatives to open offices. Emotional Mastery A must for next generation leadership.
I’ve spent decades building up my professional experience and getting the right qualifications. Time and time again I have proven myself worthy of the trust and faith that has been placed in me. I’ve always been resilient with just enough confidence to pull off the act but it turns out that resilience can be very fragile, and fake confidence, absolutely exhausting! When I didn’t get the promotion I wanted after all of that additional work; when I had to watch others with less capability thriving in the corporate world, I was literally eaten away with resentment. The resentment ran so deep, that my anger was in constant over drive. It took all of the composure I had to keep it under wraps. I often refer to this as stress, because at the time, I thought that’s what it was. I thought I could be cured by moving jobs and when that didn’t work, I simply took on less and less responsibility. That’s when the resentment turned inwards. I knew I was capable of so much more, but I was worried about the anger management issues or the inevitable burn out. Just by chance I was browsing the internet when I came across a masters in mindfulness.
Playing it small was more stressful than any promotion because I knew I was letting myself down. Julie Perrigo is the founder of Just Breathe Solutions, The Emotional Hustle and Wirral Mindfulness. @theemotionalhustle www.justbreathesolutions.co.uk

I’ve always been fascinated by what makes us human beings tick but I didn’t have the entry qualifications. Luckily it was an 8 week stress reduction course in mindfulness, just what I needed! The homework was amazing. No time consuming assignments - we spent 30 minutes each day following guided practices. I loved the idea of being authorised to lie under a blanket in the middle of the day. Some of the classes involved this too.
And so it began.... the peeling of the onion. Initially I learnt how to switch off and become closer to my emotional state, something I’d probably been disregarding for several years. Gradually I came to understand the mechanics of the mind and emotions. I started to master what I called stress, developing an inner resilience that was genuine and authentic. I couldn’t wait to learn more. Although I noticed my mind becoming more settled and spacious, I was learning that the brain is a series of muscles. Each practice was building up new neural pathways and these were contributing to a new way of navigating every aspect of life. A way that involved LESS judgement, LESS reactivity and MORE acceptance. I developed the ability to step back and pause, letting go of the urge to pick up the emotional baggage of others. Self awareness comes with responsibility, particularly when we face into those parts of our self we’d rather not see. Supporting this unveiling requires us to develop the skills of self compassion. This is all part of the process, a process that over time becomes very freeing. We come to understand our boundaries and how to live authentically to honour them. When I qualified, I wondered if there were others who were tired of striving; tired of burn out and needed to rest their minds. That’s when I created Mind21, a unique 21 day program requiring 30 minutes per day. Step by step I guide you through the practices and impart the knowledge that has turned my life around. LIVERPOOL PR AND DIGITAL MARKETING AGENCY WELLBEING UBIQUITY SCOOPS ANOTHER PRESTIGIOUS AWARD Wellbeing Ubiquity is celebrating after winning Most Client Focused PR & Digital Marketing Agency 2023 North West at the Northern Enterprise Awards. Founder Joel Jelen who began the agency in 2001 explained how the business had evolved over more than two decades with one of the keys to its success, “recognising the uniqueness and potential in people and guiding them by asking the right questions to achieve their desired profile.” Jelen maintains that Wellbeing Ubiquity’s approach has never been to cold call, developing a client base purely through recognition and referral. We’ve aligned more with the type of businesses and organisations that we excel with as we’ve matured. We’ve also been really fortunate in the way clients have been loyal to us, honoured long term contracts and empowered us to deliver on their behalf. We have a tendency to attract unassuming entrepreneurs and leaders and that’s worked for us in that their energy and vitality matches ours.” In spite of the award, Jelen is adamant that he’s much more interested in other people “and how we can help to understand clients and work together efficiently. It’s really important that whilst we recognise our own value we don’t inflate it. Intuition has been a big factor in knowing whether a client is right for us or not in terms of our direction and that’s helped us survive and thrive along with employing a work life balance culture.” Jelen insists that you can run a business from the heart by which
he basically means that “you do what you say you’re going to do as this is how others develop a level of trust in you and you only make promises you can keep. It’s a great way of strengthening the self-esteem of the business. “We enjoy all the work we do whether it’s corporate business, SMEs or community organisations because we have the ability to connect well with others, promote them prolifically and the capacity to comfort clients with wisdom when they’re concerned about their direction. Sometimes that’s about explaining to new and emerging businesses that confusion, doubt and clarity in business are natural processes that have their own inner timing and resolution.” Much of Wellbeing Ubiquity’s work is about conceptualising strategies and plans, creatively inspiring clients and in some cases pressuring them to think differently to their own benefit in delivering. In advising others keen to develop a career in the industry, Jelen says the ability to listen to a client’s emotions around a particular issue or direction and be wise, whilst remaining calm and objective is crucial. “Not bouncing up and down on the emotional waves of others and repeatedly making emotional decisions as a result is a good lesson for anyone advising others in business.” www.wellbeingubiquity.co.uk

EXPLORING ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES AND CHERISHING PRECIOUS MOMENTS At just 30 years old, Nickie Davies was confronted with a devastating diagnosis: Motor Neurone Disease (MND), an incurable and challenging condition. The news came as a shock to Nickie, daughter Ellie, her family, boyfriend, friends and work colleagues, leaving them all searching for ways to support her through this difficult journey. Despite the grim prognosis, Nickie's indomitable spirit and determination to live life to the fullest have led her to explore alternative therapies and maintain a positive attitude. Recognised as a fighter by those who know her well, Nickie has refused to let MND define her. Alongside a regimen of vitamins, she has turned to a supplement called Deanna Protocol, which has shown promise for others with similar conditions. Nickie has noticed positive changes since incorporating it into her routine, although it comes at a considerable cost. Her unwavering positivity and belief in the power of alternative therapies have become her guiding light. MND progresses differently and at varying speeds for each patient. For Nickie, muscle weakness in her tongue and throat has affected her ability to speak and consume certain foods. However, she remains resilient and determined to make lasting memories with her daughter, Ellie, her family, and her boyfriend, Mark. Currently on sick leave from her job as a carer, Nickie eagerly awaits a communication aid that will enable her to resume her professional responsibilities. Caring for others has always been her passion, and she is determined to return to her role as soon

as possible. Nickie's ability to embrace each day with a positive attitude and an unwavering hope for the future is truly inspiring. Nickie Davies is a shining example of strength and resilience in the face of adversity. Though she may not know the speed at which MND will progress, she remains steadfast in her determination to live life fully and create cherished moments with her loved ones. Her commitment to alternative therapies, positive attitude, and unwavering hope is a testament to the power of the human spirit. As Nickie takes each day as it comes, she reminds us all to face life's challenges with hope and a positive attitude. All funds raised will not only go towards Nickie’s bucket list but also for support as this disease progresses Any donation, help and support you can make is received with more gratitude than we can ever express. Friends have got together to organise a charity event which is to be held at the Railway Pub in Meols on February 3rd, 6 to 11pm. Local businesses have come together to sponsor the event and are helping to raise funds as well as spread awareness throughout the community and further afield . I am overwhelmed and extremely grateful and appreciative for all the help we have received so far Everyone has been amazing and I can’t thank everyone enough it means so much to me and my family. Proper foot care is important, yet it is easy to forget that your feet bear the brunt of most of the activities that you perform while standing upright. Over time, ignoring your feet can lead to serious problems such as chronic pain that limits your ability to enjoy your normal activities.
MANAGE ONGOING HEALTH CONDITIONS Certain health conditions place you at greater risk for serious foot problems. For example, diabetes can lead to dangerous infections and nerve damage that can require aggressive treatment if they are allowed to deteriorate.
While it is common to seek treatment for foot pain after an injury, it is also important to keep in mind that a visit to the podiatrist for routine foot care yields many benefits for your overall well-being.
Osteoarthritis also strikes the ankle and foot joints. Since this condition is progressive, receiving proper care early on helps you identify the best strategies for managing pain and easing joint stiffness, such as gentle stretches or insoles for your shoes.
What is a Podiatrist? Podiatrists specialise in the treatment of conditions that affect the feet and lower limbs. We treat pain, infections and mobility issues to keep you moving and actively enjoying life. Traditionally podiatry has been seen as a service accessed by older people needing help with general foot care. But podiatrists are increasingly working with young people, athletes and recreational sports enthusiasts to treat musculoskeletal concerns (affecting joints, bones and muscles) and manage injuries rather than visiting a physiotherapist. TREAT COMMON FOOT AND TOE INFECTIONS The skin on your feet is highly susceptible to several common infections because the dark and damp environment created by your shoes allows bacteria and fungus to flourish. With a fungal foot infection, you may notice things such as redness around your toes, or you may also notice itchiness or a foul odour. This can be alleviated with the correct treatment. For some people, ingrown toenails are a severe or persistent problem that's difficult to manage. Correct cutting may be the key to pain relief, however, nail surgery offers a long-term or permanent solution.
GET BACK IN THE GAME AFTER AN INJURY Foot injuries are common among athletes, which can take you away from your normal exercise routine, frustratingly you may have no idea why it began. Since your foot is a complicated system of muscles, ligaments, joints and nerves, a visit to the podiatrist is the best way to find out exactly what is wrong. Then, you can take advantage of a treatment plan that involves pain management techniques and rehabilitative exercises to get back out on the field LEARN PREVENTATIVE PRACTICES Lifestyle habits are a major contributor to foot problems, and it is possible that you do things every day that can eventually lead to chronic pain. For example, inappropriate footwear choice for what you are doing is associated with foot pain. During the pandemic, there was an increase in foot related pain being reported, this was in part due to people spending large amounts of time at home wearing slippers for the majority of the day, whilst still doing daily activities. If you feel you are in need of some help or need some advice regarding a foot related issue, why not give us a call at our podiatry practice in Hamilton Square on 0151 6477498, the home of healthy happy feet, or visit our website fitsq.co.uk for more information. WHAT IS BELL'S PALSY? Bell’s Palsy is a condition that affects the facial nerves, resulting in temporary weakness or paralysis on one side of the face. Although it can be a distressing experience, understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options can help individuals cope with this condition more effectively. This article aims to provide insights into Bell’s Palsy, empowering readers with knowledge to navigate their journey towards recovery. The exact cause of Bell’s Palsy remains unknown, but it is believed to occur due to inflammation and swelling of the facial nerve. Some factors that may contribute to its development include viral infections, such as the herpes simplex virus, autoimmune disorders, genetic predisposition, and environmental factors. The most common symptoms of Bell’s Palsy include sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face, drooping of the mouth or eyelid, loss of the sense of taste, increased sensitivity to sound in one ear, and difficulty closing the eye on the affected side. These symptoms typically appear suddenly and reach their peak within 48 hours. While there is no specific cure for Bell’s Palsy, various treatment options are available to help manage the condition and promote recovery. It is crucial to seek medical advice to determine the most suitable course of action. Here are some common treatment approaches: Medications: Doctors may prescribe medications such as corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and swelling of the facial nerve. Antiviral medications may also be recommended if a viral infection is suspected. Physical Therapy: Facial exercises and physical therapy techniques can help improve muscle strength, prevent muscle
stiffness, and enhance facial movement. Physical therapists can provide guidance on specific exercises tailored to individual needs. Eye Care: Protecting the eye on the affected side from drying out is essential. Artificial tears, eye patches, and wearing glasses can help prevent complications associated with insufficient eye closure. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription medications can help manage any discomfort or pain associated with Bell’s Palsy. Alternative Therapies: Some individuals find relief through complementary therapies such as acupuncture, relaxation techniques, and biofeedback. However, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional before pursuing alternative treatments. The majority of individuals with Bell’s Palsy experience a spontaneous and complete recovery within three to six months. However, some may require a longer time for improvement, and a small percentage may have residual facial weakness or other related complications. During the recovery process, it is vital to stay positive, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and follow medical advice diligently. Emotional support from friends, family, or support groups can also be beneficial. Bell’s Palsy can be a challenging condition to experience, but with proper understanding and appropriate treatment, individuals can successfully manage its effects and promote recovery. By seeking medical advice, exploring treatment options, and adopting a positive mindset, individuals can navigate their path towards regaining facial function and resuming normal daily activities. Remember, each person’s journey is unique, and with time and support, improvement is possible.

Hello dear reader, my name is Darren Holmes, and I am the CEO of Kaizen Wirral Mindset CiC Kaizen mindset is the United Kingdom’s pioneering physical mental health and wellness platform, using a blended approach towards all things physical and mental wellbeing. It is my mission to assist, educate and inspire as many people as I can, on their own journey to physical, emotional, stressless wellbeing & happiness via mental health awareness, Cognitive behavioural therapy, Nuero linguistic programming, Mindfulness & the routes, and dimensions of wellness. Does your body keep telling you that somethings just aren’t feeling quite right ? The peripheral nervous system, which is basically every part of the body that lies outside of the brain and the spinal cord, so for example all our internal organs, our skeletal and muscular systems, and our limbs all store information and memories. The nervous system can become dysregulated and out of shape, somatic feelings like anxiety, sweaty palms, wobbly legs or s feeling a dread in the solar plexus can arise due to changes in hormone levels caused by excess worry about the future, we can often feel more fatigued that usual and will lean toward sugary snack or drinks to try to pick ourselves up. Digestive issues are a regular indicator that the nervous system is under a little more stress and pressure than it wants to be, as
the digestive system tries to expel the excess stress hormones. Illness is more common in people with dysregulated nervous systems as the immune system is trying to work harder to keep us well. Emotional instabilities, frequent mood swings are more likely due to the roller coaster of hormonal imbalance from stress hormones such as Cortisol or Vasopressin, and the feelings of dissociation that we desire again from sugars or substances like alcohol are much higher. Chronic pains that cannot be explained or excessive inflammation in joints or limbs are also alarm signs that your body may be keeping the score. We can begin to reverse nervous system dysregulation in a number of ways, firstly by accepting that something potentially very deep and ignored requires some attention, there are a whole host of ways that we can begin to regulate our nervous system with holistic practises like meditations and deep somatic breath work, these practises will slow down heart rate variability and will ultimately assist in letting the body know that it is in a safe environment and can begin to release old stored emotions and conditioning. HOMEOPATHY FOR MENOPAUSE What is homeopathy? Homeopathy is a system of natural and holistic medicine that has been used by millions of people for over 200 years. Even the late Queen Elizabeth II was very fond of homeopathy. In homeopathy, we treat each person as a unique individual and tailor the treatment to that person’s needs. The aim of homeopathy is to stimulate your own body’s healing ability. Homeopathic medicines are made from natural substances like plants and minerals. It can be used by people of all ages and safely taken alongside prescribed medication.

Managing menopause naturally
Natural Gentle Safe Effective Individual
Menopause is a perfectly natural phase in a woman’s life, but it is also a time of great change both physically and emotionally. Many women pass through menopause with ease, while others suffer from a variety of unpleasant symptoms. With the help of natural medicine, I help women get through menopause and feel empowered and healthy. When supporting a woman through menopause, it is essential not only to take into consideration her physical symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, tiredness, and dryness, but also her mental and emotional symptoms like anxiety, panic attacks, irritability, depression, insomnia, mood swings, and memory loss. Each woman's feelings about this journey will be unique. In some cases, it is a time of freedom and creativity, while others may have trouble letting go of the old self. It may be hard to accept the aging process and the physical changes that occur in the body. Other factors also play a role in the way a woman experiences menopause. Constitution, family history, environment, diet, lifestyle and stress will all have their influence on her symptoms. A homeopath always treats the individual as a whole, based on their unique symptoms. Nothing in our bodies works in isolation. Every cell, organ and system is closely connected. Having a healthy liver and digestive tract is essential to hormonal health. During menopause, the liver and gut will need extra support if there is a history of contraceptive pill, or repeated antibiotic prescriptions. Prolonged stress can indicate tired adrenal glands, which also play a very important role in hormonal health. There may also be a worsening of pre-existing chronic health problems during menopause, which we can also address with homeopathy. These can include skin conditions, digestive issues, headaches, recurrent infections, lowered immunity, and aches and pains. As well as supporting people with chronic health issues, homeopathy can also treat minor ailments like colds, coughs, ear infections, UTIs, stomach problems, and injuries. NEW RESOLUTIONS This time of year amongst the family, friends, and festivities we also take time to self reflect on the year that has passed and the year that’s yet to come. In this article, I want to offer a new way of looking at the year ahead, a different way of setting yourself up, and redefining what success means. When we start looking at the past and creating our future, it’s our natural bias to put more weight on what we haven’t achieved, rather than what we have. From the targets we didn’t hit, the goals missed, Then we often use this as fuel for the year ahead. In a study of 2000 people, from December 2022, they found that whilst 87% of people were confident that they would stick to New Year Resolutions, only 22% actually did. What was more fascinating about this study was the reasons behind people not sticking to their goals. There were three main reasons, thinking too big and setting the goal too high, realising that they weren’t ready for that kind of change in their lives, and finally, not considering their ‘Why’. The Why. The deeper understanding of our ‘Why’, is what my work has been founded on for a number of decades. The understanding that at the root of every single goal we set, is how we ultimately want to feel. In contrast to this, what I have found over this time too is that the bigger the goals we set ourselves, the less ready we feel motivated to create the change we truly want in our lives. This ultimately takes us further away from how we truly want to feel. I have worked with people from all walks of life, the high earners who feel less and less safety and freedom, to the creatives stuck with the idea that they need to earn a set amount before they can create. All of these give us a quick insight and rush in the feeling

we want to feel, only for it to quickly subside, and turn us looking for the next high. Learning how to not only sustain this feeling, but embody, and nurture it in every moment is the real measure of success we are all looking for. Redefining Success. This year let's make a resolution to measure success on something better, something deeper, something more embodied. That is, waking up every morning feeling how you want to feel, joy, content, happy, peace. Let’s measure how often we wake up feeling that and how aligned we stay connected to it throughout the day, as a new measure of success. Come and visit the library section of the Nurture Map website where you can find more resources to support this idea, one particularly by Dr Alan Watkins Embodied Approach. Grounding into how you want to feel isn’t just toxic positivity, and ignoring what we’re truly feeling. It’s about connecting deeper to understand how are Soul wants to feel, you'd be surprised at the answers, and also what they inspire. Over the last few years, I have worked with people in January to create a whole new way to set approach the year ahead, and this year we are going deeper. Beginning on January 8th we are holding an 8-week course called Embody 2024. During this experience we will take you on a journey and show you the holistic, somatic and embodied approaches so you can experience them for yourselves and come back to throughout the entire year. If you would like to join us for this 8 week journey in creating embodied foundation for 2024, and at the same time redefine success, you can email me thenurturehut@gmail.com for all the details. NORTHWOOD Boo!, the battle against mould and condensation! It's the quintessential drama playing out in homes across the country, where tenants and owners engage in a perpetual dance with this unwanted houseguest. But fear not, hurrah! for this is a tale of triumph waiting to be told! Here’s your guide to evicting mould and banishing condensation from your abode. Hooray!! Act I: The Perilous Encounter Our story begins with a chance meeting between moisture and chilly surfaces. They hit it off instantly, forming condensation - the perfect breeding ground for the villainous mould. Boo! Our tenants, blissfully unaware, crank up the heat, with hot baths and showers, kettles and start cooking up a storm in the kitchen. Meanwhile, our sneaky antagonist lurks in the corners, waiting for its moment to strike. The Solution: Introduce your home to the art of ventilation! Crack open a window, let the air flow, and bid condensation adieu. For owners, consider investing in extractor fans to keep the air circulating like a wellchoreographed ballet. Act II: The Rise of the Mould Menace Before you know it, mould invades your sanctuary, turning walls into abstract art pieces. Tenants start a futile battle armed with cleaning sprays, hoping for a quick victory. Alas, mould laughs in the face of such feeble attempts. Ho Ho Ho!
moisture control, and tenants, keep your vigilant eyes peeled for any signs of condensation or mould's dastardly return. And thus concludes our epic tale of overcoming the nefarious forces of condensation and mould. May your homes forever remain a fortress of dryness and your walls be pristine canvases untouched by the dark arts of mould. Until next time, dear readers, stay dry, stay vigilant, and let the air flow freely in your humble abodes!
The Solution: Time to bring out the big guns! Employ mould-resistant paints for those walls, ensuring the sneaky spores find no foothold. For tenants, a mixture of vinegar and water in a spray bottle makes for a formidable mouldfighting weapon. Take that!! Act III: The Big Finale With determination and a dash of creativity, our heroes (that’s you!) emerge victorious! Owners and tenants, hand in hand, implement preventive measures like insulation, proper heating, and dehumidifiers, sealing the fate of condensation and mould for good. The End: Live happily ever after in a mould-free haven, where condensation dares not rear its damp head. Tenants, rejoice in a well-ventilated abode, while owners bask in the glory of a property free from the clutches of moisture. Remember, this battle requires teamwork!
