The business of dressing for work Whatever business you’re in, we all know that people buy from people. We naturally make judgements about someone on how they appear when we first meet them, before we’ve even spoken to them - so it’s really important to make that positive first impression. And what you wear for work is one your most powerful business and marketing tools. But it’s easy to think that to be taken seriously, we have to dress very seriously and that goes for both men and women. So, let’s start with the ladies. Far too many women I meet in business wear the classic black suit. We have loads of choice when it comes to clothes – often making things more complicated! The first thing I do with any new client, is a shape analysis. I really believe this is the key to dressing well, as it helps you understand what length, cuts and styles of clothes will suit your figure best. The second thing I do is a colour analysis, considering your complexion and the shades and tones that work best for you. There are many alternatives to wearing a suit, even in very corporate jobs, so open your eyes to them and start to think outside the suit! There are tons of styles of skirts and dresses ranging from pencil, draped, A-line, to pleated and tulip to name a few. The same goes for trousers, such as cigarette, flared, straight, tapered and cropped. All these can be paired with a blouse or tunic, cardigan, jacket or kimono - and then there are shoes, such as peep-toe, rounded toe, heeled or flat shoes! Yes, that’s a lot of choice, but try not to be overwhelmed and instead start to have fun with how you dress for work. It’s just about balancing your outfit and selecting the right combination of cuts, fabrics, colours and prints to suit you. If you are able to dress more casually for work, then I suggest your hair and make-up need to work harder, to maintain a professional image. And don’t forget accessories like jewellery, scarves and bags to really bring an outfit to life.

Marella - Silk top £168 This gorgeous print is perfect for summer and the lose cut silk drapes elegantly over any tummy or arm wobbles.

Chesca, Zip pocket trousers £95 Beautifully tailored straight leg style, ideal for flattering curvy bottoms and thighs.

BOSS Orange, Benefit cotton blazer £250 I love this modern fit blazer. Easy over a shirt with some chinos for a more relaxed look. Also available in Graphite for a suit jacket alternative.

As for the gents – yes, it does tend to be shirts, trousers and blazers that look more professional, rather than shorts and t-shirts or jumpers. But this doesn’t necessarily limit you to dull black matching suits. There are lots of ways to look smart but more interesting, without looking boring or old fashioned. Why not mix and match jackets and trousers, or wear some less formal shoes with a suit? To create a really contemporary look, choose a tie with a ‘squared-off’ end. Or why not embrace the dapper gent look, by choosing a really sleek suit and adding a waistcoat and pocket-handkerchief? Consider mixing textures and fabrics into your look too. Colour also plays a huge part in men’s styling and makes up for the lack of choice in types of clothes – but don’t just limit yourself to a colourful tie, think about shirts and even the suit itself. Beware though, it’s all about balancing the colour combinations - by considering which colours and prints suit you, you can create outfits that bring out your best features, and help to update and improve your image. If you’re in a creative job, or your business has a dress-down policy, you still have the opportunity to look professional. The decisions you make about how you dress are just as important as the decisions the guy in the suit next door makes! So, just because its casual, doesn’t mean it needs to be scruffy. And whatever you wear, make sure it fits well! A badly fitted suit, jacket or trousers, no matter what the cost, looks like you haven’t made any effort at all. The rest of you should look smart too. Just like women should ensure their hair and make-up looks good, your hair should be cut well, and that you’re either clean-shaven or your facial hair is trimmed. And remember scruffy shoes can let down any outfit. Colour can be quite a daunting area for both men and women, but it’s simply about understanding your complexion and how colours affect it. Far too many people wear black. It isn’t even a flattering colour for most complexions; it absorbs the light and is very ageing. It’s also rather uninspiring. If you have a soft, warm complexion, you need to look for warm or muted tones, like olive greens, dirty oranges and navy. If you have a clearer, lighter complexion, then pastels or primary colours will look great. And if you have a very strong, striking complexion, then you could choose stronger brighter colours to compliment your features.

Thomas Pink, Robertson shirt £99 This muted check print suits ‘warm’ complexions and is great for adding shape to slimmer shapes. Karen Millen, Quilted jacket £199 The quilted padding and cropped design helps to add curve to slimmer shapes.

You’re choice of colour is an opportunity to stand out from the crowd. I’m not saying you should wear all the colours of the rainbow, or some kind of bohemian get-up, but if you’re a bit more creative when it comes to work wear, and you let your personality shine through what you wear, people are more likely to be interested in you and what you have to offer. By wearing clothes you look good in, because they suit you and your personality, you’re more likely to feel confident and make a positive impression. You are your advert for your own brand, if you like.

Jemma works with business professionals on an individual basis, providing a very tailored service to help men and women understand which styles and colours work best for them and to help update their image. Jemma also provides image-training workshops in businesses across the Northwest.

Dune, Leather cricket chelsea boots £89 A classic leather boot with a check side panel, mixing heritage and modern styles. Pair with your suit for work or with jeans at the weekend.

RALLY RETURNS New Brighton gears up for its annual motor sport spectacular For thirty four years now souped up Capris, Escorts and Focus’ have made the pilgrimage to New Brighton’s waterfront to chance their hand in the Wallasey Motor Club Promenade Stages Rally. This year’s main event drives into town on Saturday 5th September. Thoroughly sexy and thoroughly cool Rally driver. Wouldn’t you just love to offer that as an answer to the question ‘So what do you do?’ It’s just so thoroughly sexy. Fast cars, travelling the world, sipping on champagne down in Monte Carlo. Thoroughly cool. Where it all began It’s not surprising that the first time the word ‘rally’ was used was indeed in Monte Carlo. That was back in 1911. It wasn’t until the 1920’s that the expression was used anywhere apart from the sun soaked shoreline of the Côte d’Azur. Prior to Monte Carlo the closest the world came to anything similar was in the late 19th century, in Paris. In 1894 the winner of the Paris Rouen Horseless Carriage Competition found himself disqualified – for using an ineligible steam powered car. Merseyside’s Monte Carlo Since its humble beginnings Merseyside’s Monte Carlo has come a long way. Set against the spectacular backdrop of Liverpool Bay and the famous city skyline just across the river, the Corsas and Calibras have given way to a new breed of seriously souped up super cars.

14

The new kids on the block Darrian Kit cars and Ex Works World Rally Cars are the 21st Centuries answer to the steam powered buckets of 120 year ago. Pushing the limits, these bad boys start at about ten grand for the bare bones to close on seventeen grand for a motor that’s ready for action. The most spectacular spectator sport Ninety competitors are expected to take to the roads, tackling ten Special Stages on New Brighton’s Kings Parade closed road circuit. Designated spectator areas, running commentary and a Rally Village with full catering facilities. Visitors can even get up close to the cars and chat to the crew They’re the ingredient’s that helped Wallasey Motor Club Promenade Stages Rally win the Wirral tourism award for ‘Best Event of the Year 2014’.

Need to know more? This year’s rally will take place on Saturday 5th September. The rally is held on the closed roads that form King’s Parade at New Brighton Promenade in Wirral. New Brighton Promenade is situated at the top of the Wirral Peninsula. Access is easily gained via Junction 1 of the M53 Motorway or from Liverpool via the Wallasey Tunnel.

The venue is approximately 5 minutes from the motorway. Spectator Car Parking will be signposted on the day of the event. For further details visit the Motor Club website www.wallaseymc.com

“The sea is everything. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides.” Jules Verne put it so much better than I ever could. It’s hard not to be seduced by the sea. It conjures images of childhood innocence, with carefree summer days lingering in the memory.

The romance of the sea

In the dead of night, lying awake in bed, I sometimes – not often – catch the distant drone of ships making their presence felt on the Mersey. I’m not a sailor. I don’t even swim in the sea. Yet the sound of a distant ship’s horn drifting through the still night air – muted but unmistakable – has my senses tingling and imagination running wild. The romance of the sea forges an enduring allure.

A must see social event

Set in that doe eyed context you’ll perhaps find it easy to understand why I am so thoroughly excited at the prospect of this years Hilbre Island Sea Kayak Race. Liverpool Canoe Club presents their fifth annual event on the 5th July. More than a race, it’s steadily become one of the Wirral’s must see social events of the year.

Competition across three courses

Fifty paddlers provide the competition across three courses – the West Kirby 4km Race, the Little Eye Race (9km) and the main event – the Hilbre Race, standing at a whopping 13km. Dee Sailing Club plays host at its Thurstaston Country Park base. The races all get underway with a terribly exciting scramble to the boats from shore, competitors heaving their kayaks to the water before heading off on their quest for victory.

Indulge yourself

If the challenge of rocky coastlines, tidal swells, and reefs isn’t for you – and only experienced paddlers are allowed to take on seas that organisers say can get ‘very rough’ – you could take a leaf out of my book – kick back, enjoy the spectacle, bask in the ambience on a balmy summer’s day (hopefully) and indulge yourself. The clubhouse bar will be open and the post race prize giving and barbecue are not to be missed.

Getting there

THE GREAT WALL A Wirral teenager’s long march for charity The Great Wall of China. Over two thousand years old and built to keep the marauding hordes of Europe and Asia at bay. More than thirteen thousand miles of stone, wood and brick. To describe it as imposing is an understatement. It is, in fact, the only man made object that is visible from the moon. The pathways standing atop of the wall are often uneven, steep, and punishing. Heat, humidity and rain promise to be the worst of companions for every strength sapping step taken on this most famous of landmarks. This year marks the 20th anniversary of St Kentigern Hospice in St Asaph. Every year the centre gets just 20% of its funding from government. That leaves £1.3 million pounds to raise every year - just to maintain the existing level of care. Now some of you may know, but a 20th anniversary is your china anniversary. China – china, the connection was made. Plans were hatched for a

Far East odyssey to raise £25,000 taking on the foot blistering, arduous footpaths of the Great Wall. The Wirral was indeed represented on this punishing journey by fourteen year old George Last, from Hoylake. The minimum age to take on the Wall is 14 because it’s considered just too hard for anyone younger. Sue Last – George’s nan - is the chaplain at St Kentigern. Not to be outdone Sue decided to go too! St Kentigern care for eight patients and day therapy visitors, all coping with serious and terminal illness. My first reaction to taking on such a mammoth task – 33km of hard slog in unpredictable conditions – was ‘Isn’t there an easier way?’ But then I got to thinking about the people at St Kentigern. There is no greater struggle or harder path than dealing with serious illness. That puts everything in perspective.

Make the right decision when it comes to divorce Separation and divorce are becoming more common. Why? There are a number of contributing factors such as financial pressures, the stress of family life, couples simply growing apart, loss of feelings for each other, abuse, inequality and, sadly, infidelity. Julie comments “being part of Morecrofts LLP for over 20 years has been an absolute pleasure. Having been trained by Helen Broughton who is now a full time judge, I really couldn’t have asked for better. Working in our Wirral office in Hamilton square means I am easily accessible for clients throughout the whole of the Merseyside region. “It was an honour when our Family Law department was recognised for its excellence by winning the bi-annual Liverpool Law Society Family Law Award in 2013 and were shortlisted in the same category again in 2015.” Morecrofts walked away from the Liverpool Law Society Awards in May 2015 with a win for Private Client team of the year as well as Managing Partner Alison Lobb being crowned Solicitor of the year. The firm were also shortlisted for the Employment Award, Commercial Law Award and Junior Lawyer Award. “The Liverpool Law Society Awards are so highly competitive,” adds Julie. “To be shortlisted in so many categories (more than any other Merseyside firm) is a great achievement and shows recognition for the hard work and dedication our teams put in to all work we do.”

So why go to Morecrofts? Quite simply they are the best.
