A new job meant Rebeckah could no longer be there for her dogs. She looked at many kennels but found them far to basic for her dog’s needs. There was no option but to rehome her beautiful dogs to a family who would provide them with all the love, care, and time they deserved. Rebeckah created a luxury hotel and dog care service in 2008 - No More Kennels was born. All dogs can feel like a celebrity for a stay or a day and enjoy the salubrious surroundings. This award-winning luxury hotel and doggie day care, rated 5* by Warrington Borough Council, provides you with complete piece of mind. HOWND STARTED BY MAKING THE BEST AND MOST ETHICALLY CERTIFIED GROOMING PRODUCTS. THEY HAVE NEVER DEVIATED FROM THEIR EARLY PRINCIPLES OF PUTTING THE PLANET AND PETS FIRST AND NEVER WILL. THEY BECAME SUPER FOOD INNOVATORS AND WERE THE FIRST COMPANY IN THE UK TO CREATE A NUTRITIONALLY COMPLETE FOOD RANGE WHICH IS HIGH IN PROTEIN, HYPOALLERGENIC AND SUPER DELICIOUS - ALL POWERED BY PLANTS.
With a heightened awareness of the planet’s fragility, many of us are looking at our lives and habits to see what adjustments we can make to do our bit for the environment. With more than 10 million dogs in the UK, our furry family members are consumers too, but new data has revealed that over half (54 per cent) of British dog owners have never considered the impact their dog has on the environment and sustainability. Award-winning UK company HOWND® has been championing ethical, cruelty-free, plant-based pet care products since 2015 and shares six ways your dog can reduce its carbon pawprint and be pawkind. 1. Be a considered canine consumer. Ultimately a dog just wants somewhere warm to sleep, a full tummy and someone to love them, but of course there are things they need and then there’s the things we like to treat them with. However, the more you buy, the bigger the environmental impact so whether it’s a new bed, a coat for the cold or treats, put a little thought into it. Buy the best quality you can afford for longevity, consider packaging and the product’s composition, buy local where possible and look for brands with ethical/sustainable practices. In just a few searches you can find vegan faux leather collars and leads, toys made from natural materials like Hemp, brands that will exchange your dog’s outgrown collars for a gift voucher and even treat companies that donate treats to a rescue centre for every pack sold. For feeding, choose metal, ceramics or recyclable bowls. Also where possible resist the temptation of novelty seasonal purchases, as a pair of fluffy doggy antlers are more likely to spend more time as waste than being worn. 2. Upcycle, DIY, Repair and Donate. From dog toys and tuggers made from old jeans to hideaway beds crafted from an old bedside table, Pinterest is awash with weekend craft projects that will repurpose our ‘stuff’ to the benefit of our pets. If cooking is more your thing, make use of ingredients coming up to their use-by date to whip
up DIY treats such as crunchy peanut butter biscuits or cooling fruity ice-cubes – find them online or google doggy cookbooks. And don’t forget to add ‘the dog’ to your decluttering list. Before you toss this away, consider its actual condition. Their favourite plush toy might just need a few stitches and a 30-degree wash to look as good as new. Perhaps a mucky fabric collar could return to its former glory after a long soak in the sink with dog shampoo. Rather than throw excess items, donate unused or barely used toys, treats, food and more to your local animal charity. 3. Four-legged food swaps. Did you know that as much as 30% of reared livestock is destined for pet food and that at least 20 times more land is required to feed a meat-eating dog than one on a plant-based diet? Over half the population (56 per cent) wrongly believe that dogs are obligate carnivores, when in fact dogs are omnivores and just like humans they can not only survive but thrive on a plant-based diet. New for 2021 is nutritionally complete and balanced HOWND Plant Powered Superfood, which has been formulated by veterinary and pet food nutritionists. Suitable for feeding your dog over a few meals a week (flexitarian) to aid their overall health, or on a fully-vegan basis to twin with your own plant-based diet, feed your dog in the knowledge that with every bowlful served, your furry friend is doing their bit for the planet. Plus, it’s also naturally hypoallergenic, making it a fantastic alternative for furry allergy sufferers, and it’s low in fat too for pets who need to manage their weight. 4. Eco-Friendly Waste Management. Dogs are said to produce an average of 340g of poo a day and with more than 10million dogs in the UK, that’s a lot of waste. It’s a given for any responsible pet owner that you clean up after your dog but for more considerate waste management, do it with biodegradable or better still, compostable bags made from corn starch, which completely biodegrade back to their natural elements. At home, you can also recycle your dog’s waste in a ready-made wormery, which makes great fertiliser for your plants and flowers. Do not use for your vegetable patch though.

RESCUE HOME & AWAY DEB MANGAN RESCUED TWO KOKONIS FROM A SHELTER IN CYPRUS. THE PASSING OF HER LOVELY MUM SAW DEB TAKE ON TWO COCKERPOO’S AND FOSTER A DOG FROM ROMANIA THAT SHE COULDN’T PART WITH BROUGHT THE PACK TO FIVE.
Five years ago, whilst on a walk Deb Mangan came across a lady with five small dogs who were all the same breed but a breed unknown to Deb The lady explained they were rescue dogs from Cyprus and were called Kokonis. Kokonis were only formally recognised by the breed standard in 2004 by the Greek Kennel Club. A small, loving dog that’s fiercely loyal and makes the perfect addition to any family. Due to the lack of animal rights in Cyprus there are many on the streets and Deb knew she had to rescue a Kokoni as soon as she could. Unfortunately, the process is much harder and longer in England, so adopting from Cyprus was the perfect option. After much research Deb found rescue centres all over Cyprus and
began following on Instagram and Facebook. Every day abandoned dogs were posted after they were taken to the shelters. She submitted a few applications but was always beaten much to Deb’s dismay. This did however alert Nicosia Dog Shelter in Cyprus to just how keen she was. It wasn’t long before Deb spotted Sara (now called Koko) a beautiful one year old who had been abandoned with her puppies, her heart melted and when she applied she was finally accepted. The shelter sent a nearby spokesperson to check that Deb’s home was suitable for the adoption. It was. The paperwork and travel would mean Koko would be with them in two weeks when they were due to be on a family holiday in the USA.
Deb Mangan with Koko and Twirl
Koko
FACT This meant that Koko went to a foster home for the interim period. Deb never stopped looking at the feeds, even on holiday. Another Kokoni, this time a puppy named Twirl came up and she knew immediately it was Koko’s puppy. Twirl was returned to foster care as she couldn’t settle in her new home. Deb applied for her too. Her heart was full, both mother and daughter would be hers once she was back off her holiday, but this wasn’t the end of the story. Koko’s foster parent had become attached and wanted to adopt her fully, something the rescue shelter are very keen on. With a heavy heart Deb accepted Koko would be loved and cared for so had to let her go. Grateful to have Twirl but broken hearted over Koko she carried on with her holiday, after a few days the shelter contacted her again, this time with news that melted Deb’s heart. The new owner of Koko, Paul, had heard Deb wanted to keep mother and daughter together so agreed to drive half way up the country to allow the dogs to meet. Most often a mother seperated from her pup will not accept them back. Paul did the journey several times to know for sure that the dogs wanted to be together. They never forgot each other and have remained loyal and loving to each other ever since. Deb has her two gorgeous Kokoni’s, although she did change Sara’s name to Koko to avoid confusion with cousin and friends called Sarah! They now live their best life with Deb, her husband, three children along with three other dogs, two of which belonged to her mother, now sadly passed and the third, a gorgeous rescue pup from Romania. but we will tell you about them another time! They are walked twice a day at the very least, including visits to the beach and local parks and they are of course loved with a passion by the whole family and rightly so - they are absolutely adorable! They are so loving and will happily be stroked and cuddled all day, they love their food, other dogs, people and treats.

mild manner and are easy to train
Lovely temperament with both dogs and
humans. Perfect for a family with children.
Loyal. Perfect companion for an older person. Intelligent - It won’t take them long to get the better of other dogs.
Minimal grooming requirements. Just a light
groom daily and a bath every couple of months will see them right unless very dirty.
Adaptable. The Kokoni will adjust very quickly
to any lifestyle.
Prone to dental issues. Be sure to brush their teeth regulaly to avoid vet bills for plaque.
Deb saved both of their lives and gave them the home all dogs deserve and we thank her for that. She has subsequently become a volunteer for the shelter and is one of the people who will inspect your home and suitability for adopting a pup, bringing joy and love to more abandoned dogs in Cyprus.

snack. Apple slices cut up small, banana or watermelon, make great treats but no more than a slice or two of each. Please be aware that some fruit can be bad for your dog so please check first and always try a tiny amount. Your need to know if it agrees with your dog and if they like it before it becomes a treat.
We would always recommend not to overfeed your dog, so ensure to remove the same quantity of food from their meals.
3. Vegetables - As with fruit, vegetables are good in small amounts and should be given in tiny pieces to begin with. We would recommend such vegetables as green beans and carrots or try cooked pumpkin.
Here are some suggestions that you may want to use as treats. Remember, never force your dog to eat anything they don’t want to, they have preferences too!
4. Their own dinner - The dried food you give your dog for dinner can make a great treat or reward for your dog. Remember to deduct the amount given from their dinner so as not to overfeed them.
1. Cooked chicken - This is ideal for training. Boil the chicken in plain water (no salt) and cut it into tiny pieces to use as a treat for positive reinforcement. You can use other lean meat like turkey but steer clear of fatty or processed meats.
5. Homemade treats - Rather than buying readymade treats you could make your own. This way you know exactly what is in the treat and can adjust their food accordingly.
2. Fruit - It may seem strange giving your dog fruit but in small amounts they can be a nutritious

Dog treats like this should only be given to your dog as an occasional treat, alongside a well-balanced diet appropriate for their age, lifestyle and health. If you are concerned about your dog’s diet, seek advice from your vet. INGREDIENTS Plain or Wholemeal Flour 300g Rolled oats 100g (non-flavoured) Eggs 2 Bananas 2 Honey 1tsp Peanut Butter 250g (make sure it does not contain xylitol sweetener which can be harmful to dogs) METHOD Preheat the oven to 180°C (170 fan or 350°F). Blend together the peeled bananas, eggs, peanut butter and honey. If
you don’t have a blender you can mash the bananas with a fork and whisk in the rest of the wet ingredients. In a separate bowl, mix the flour and oats, then add this to the wet mixture. Bring the mixture together with a spoon or using hands until it forms a dough. Dust a work surface with flour and roll out the dough to be around 1cm in thickness. Use a cookie cutter to cut out biscuits from the dough. Place the biscuits on a lined baking tray and bake in the oven for around 20 minutes or until golden brown in colour. Leave to cool fully before feeding to your dog.

24 GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND SPONSORSHIP
WHERE THERE’S HOPE... OUR EDITOR SPONSORED A PUPPY CALLED HOPE. HOPE IS NOW FULLY TRAINED AND HAS BEEN PLACED WITH HER NEW OWNER LYN WHO TELLS US THEIR STORY BELOW.
Hello, it’s Lyn here, Hope’s new owner. I can’t thank you enough for your support in making our partnership happen. I have very limited sight; one of my eyes has no sight whatsoever and I only have 6% vision in the other. When I lost my sight, I didn’t go out at all. Now, Hope is my eyes and she’s been just amazing. I woke up one morning about four years ago and my sight had gone. I thought it must be a temporary thing initially, but when my sight didn’t improve, I went to the hospital. I was told that due to my Diabetes, blood hadn’t been getting to the back of my eyes and the damage was permanent.
I’m a fairly positive person, so I started using a white cane. However, I had to ask for help all the time; so much so that I didn’t think the cane was working. Around this time, my daughter contacted Guide Dogs, but then COVID-19 struck. I thought I’d be waiting forever when I received a call to say Guide Dogs had found me a possible match; I couldn’t believe it! When I met Hope, she opened a whole new world to me. My local doctors offered to take me and Hope on a VIP tour and meet all the staff to ensure they’d all be ready for us when we next turned up. Attitudes of people changed towards me too people would offer to help before I even needed it!
Pictured above: Hope loving life Pictured right: Lyn with Hope
Hope is my first guide dog. Partnership training took around five weeks and initially I had to show Karen, my Guide Dogs Mobility Specialist, the regular routes I took and things I do. We then practised these with Hope. I was pretty scared at first, as I was relying on a dog and yet trying to concentrate on Karen’s instructions too. Karen was lovely though and patiently taught me all the verbal cues such as ‘forward’, ‘stop’, ‘left over’, ‘keep in’ and ‘keep right’. Settling into home life I had to adjust to having a dog around, but Hope made herself at home so quickly! She had a good look around and then just settled. She’s such a chilled dog it’s unbelievable! Mind you, when I take her on a free run, she’s like a racehorse! Hope is very intelligent too; when we stop at traffic lights, she knows I carry biscuits in my pocket and sometimes she’ll nudge me to give her one for being good. Sometimes I challenge her and say, “Show
27
me three steps” and after each step she’ll look at me, but knows she’ll only get a biscuit at the third step! Hope has brought me hope I was always happy to be on my own before, but Hope gives me a reason to get up and out the house. I go to my friend’s house quite often who has two pet dogs, and Hope is so calm walking there wearing her harness. As soon as she’s at the front door, she gets so excited to see her friends! Before I had Hope, if it was raining or dark, I wouldn’t go out. I couldn’t see at all, so I would wait until it got lighter. I can go anywhere now – Hope is my purpose in life. I like to take her out and look after her, and I can go out at 7am if I want because she is my eyes. That trust when she’s walking with me is just amazing! I hope you’ve enjoyed following Hope’s journey and watching her grow from a tiny puppy into an incredible life-changing guide dog. I can’t thank you enough for your support in making our partnership possible.

CANINE EPILEPSY LIKE HUMANS, EPILEPSY IN DOGS IS A BRAIN DISORDER THAT CAUSES SUDDEN FITS. CANINE EPILEPSY IS SELDOM CURED BUT CAN BE EFFECTIVELY MANAGED. HERE IS NALA’S STORY Nala is a beautiful six year old, Dogue De Bordeaux mix. Everything seemed fine at first but owner Claire noticed that the running and twitching in her sleep seemed excessive and not the normal dream movements. Aged just five months Nala suffered her first Grand Mal seizure. That same night, she went on to have more fits and her loving owners knew that quick action was needed. The very next day Nala was taken to the vets and prescribed phenobarbital. There were more fits and adjustments to the medicine were needed to get the levels right. Once the correct dosage was agreed the fits began to settle.
back, we are so blessed to have her in our lives. I must mention Dog Epilepsy Owners UK, a Facebook group. They were absolutely fantastic. Their advice was beyond amazing and I would advise anyone with an epileptic dog to join. It is a great community providing great support”.
“Nala is a very special dog and the odd twitch here and there reminds us just how special she is. She loves playing with bubbles, it’s her favourite thing to do. Being epileptic has never held Nala
Dogs who have experienced fits before may feel a little strange when a seizure is coming and behave in an unusual way – signs you will hopefully come to recognise.
Epilepsy is thought to affect about four in every 100 dogs, and most commonly starts in those between one and five years of age. Contact your vet immediately and follow their instructions. There can be side-effects to medication, including weight gain – and it’s important to ensure your pet remains a healthy weight.

Walkies! STANNEY WOODS COUNTRY PARK - DOG WALK Grade: Easy
Distance: 2-4 km/1-2 miles Time: 1-1.5 hours
Start: Just off the A5117 near Ellesmere Port Size: 21.96 ha (54.26 acres) Terrain: Easily accessible
This beautiful woodland area covers 54.26 acres and although its not the largest, it offers you and your dog/s up to 2 miles of great walks. The main route has its path along the outskirts of Stanney Woods Country Park however there are lots more paths throughout giving your dog a new experience each visit. With its many entry and exit points it’s easy to navigate and hard to get lost. You can choose to arrive by car, the carpark is just off the A5117 or by the different entry points in amidst local housing, making access easy for those on foot too. The ancient woodlands are bursting with magnificent Oaks and Silver Birch interspersed with Hazel and Holly providing the perfect home for wildlife and woodland flowers. Your dog will love the many ponds and winding paths, an amazing sensory experience on each and every walk. With its near flat terrain, it’s a walk the whole family can enjoy. There is pram and wheelchair access along the main paths, although they do get very muddy in places during the wet months. We recommend pulling on a pair of wellies in winter but in the summer months any flat shoes will be sufficient. There are no facilities here but Cheshire Oaks Retail Park is very close, where you will find toilets and places to eat which are dog friendly. Look out for the purple paw print sticker on windows to show which stores also allow your pooch in.

CANINE ART EMMA RODGERS IS ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER AND HIGHLY COLLECTABLE ARTISTS WORKING IN BRITAIN TODAY.
She has exhibited worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Stricoff Fine Art N.Y., Royal Academy of Art, Collect at The Saatchi, S.O.F.A. Chicago and New York and Wei Ling Gallery Kuala Lumpa to name but a few. She has also featured in a documentary dedicated to her work on the Sky Arts Channel and has worked with Marvel Films on the sets of the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers Age of Ultron. Emma is one of the artists who created the bronze statue of Cilla Black. Did you have animals as a child? Can you remember the first animal you made? I was surrounded by animals from a very early age. They have always been a huge part of my life and somewhat of an obsession. I love their company, observing their behaviour and like to interact with them wherever I may be. I often take in strays and have done since childhood. I will actively seek out animals to sketch when travelling to try and have a greater understanding of them. The first animal that really inspired me was my rescue Siamese cat
Chuckles. I was fascinated by how he could distort his lean body into a compacted mass through to balletic outstretched limbs. Movement and form of the beast is still something that inspires me to this day. How many dogs do you have currently? Have any of them been a model for you? I currently have three dogs and a fox that visits occasionally. Dora is an Italian Bracco and super cuddly, Jock is a Springer Spaniel who loves water, Charlie is a very cute fox and Theo is a Dachshund who likes dressing up and being my muse. His most recent role was posing for the Salford firsts commission. Do you prefer ceramic or bronze? I love working in clay and bronze as each has beautiful qualities. The fluid textures and surfaces that can be created in clay is something I never tire of. Whilst the strength and freedom with pose achieved in bronze along with patinating surfaces and using the heat of the flame to create colours is something quite magical.

What is the process when a large bronze is cast? The best example is Salford First with a horse as the focal point of the sculpture. The horse has a long relationship with the city of Salford working in the underground colliery and canal systems. It was the first city to have a horse drawn bus service. The horse is standing by a lamp post, a bronzed representation of the first gas lit streetlamp and the entwined trees at the top pay tribute to the Old English word for Salford which means willows by the ford. Finally, the base of the lamppost features a dachshund inspired by Salford Artist Harold Riley’s dog sketches. Using my own dog Theo as my muse, I created a funnel system within the sculpture. If there is heavy rain fall or a water bottle the dog wees on the lamp post! Rubbings can be taken from the raised drawings on the sculpture and there is also a QR code which makes the whole thing come alive. This was a lovely project. The more I researched the more people got in touch. Andy McCluskey from OMD had his first record with Factory Records and Peter Hook was also a huge part of this through John Cooper Clark’s poems. Graham Nash kindly have me designs of his album cover and the wonderful Albert Finney got in touch before he passed and sent his favourite lines from a film. The initial making was interesting, I had luckily made the steel armature just before lock down, which was delivered to my garden along with one tonne of clay. The lock down lasted much longer than I anticipated so Louis the horse was created in clay in my back garden under a botched BBQ stand. Once I was happy with the clay form, sections were broken down and coated in a silicon rubber. This method picks up fine details and is quite flexible to remove. Once it was set we coated the silicone in fibreglass. This stops the silicone mould distorting and keeps its structure throughout the process. The mould was then removed from the sculpture and the wax stage began. Eventually, the wax model will be cast into bronze. It is quite a lengthy process.

What is the biggest sculpture you have made and where did you make it? My biggest sculpture is The Meccano Liver Bird situated on Edge Lane shopping park. It is 11 metres high making it the biggest Liver Bird in the world and was made at ArtFab as they specialise in fabricated steel. The inspiration for the Liver Bird is based on traditional Meccano parts and is a fitting tribute to where the Meccano factory once stood. For the commission I visited their Calais factory and picked a range of standard Meccano parts to create the Maquette. We then scaled it up into huge steel pieces recreating the nuts and bolts. I should really contact the Guinness book of records to have it officiated. Is there another medium that you would like to explore or are you happy where you are at? My main focus when creating a new piece is which material will enable me to translate my sketches and designs into how I visualise the sculpture in the strongest and most aesthetically suited form and surface, then I choose the material. I recently created “Primavera” tree sculpture for the Winter Garden in Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Liverpool mainly working in 316 stainless steel. It was chosen to allow me to work on a large scale requiring less support than if working purely in bronze as the sculpture was part of the structure. The sculpture is of a tree. The foliage are doves, the symbol of CCC and through donations to the charity more doves are added to the foliage. It therefore grows over time with 100% of the proceeds going to the charity, as my aim was to create something that would continue to help support the amazing facility. Your animal sculptures show incredible knowledge of the subject. How much research is involved in a single piece? I have been obsessed with animals since a small child. When creating a new piece, I will draw and photograph the creature. From fine detailed drawing of digits to facial features and quick loose sketches aiming to capture the moment. I also study the bone and muscle structure. I am lucky enough to have contact with veterinary schools which has given me the opportunity to attend animal autopsies. I also like to observe some grazing in a field. This has given me a true appreciation of the beauty of nature and how intricately every detail is connected. The more I research the more I discover. It is a constant journey that continues to inspire
group of friends. I went onto Wolverhampton University where I studied ceramics and glass for my BA and Art and Design for my MA which I completed in 1998. During my 3rd year of my BA our tutors encouraged us to apply for exhibitions one of which was at the Victoria and Albert Museum. One of my pieces featured was Rabbit 1 (ceramic). I was lucky enough to be accepted and was a prize winner there. This created an interest in my work, which meant I could save and invest in my first bronze created from Rabbit 1 which was featured in the Royal Academy of Arts. I continued to invest in developing my work and facilities and continue to do so today. What is next for Emma Rodgers? I have recently created the Elaine Morgan statue in Mountain Ash, South Wales commissioned by Monumental Women. Can you believe it will only be the second public art sculpture of a woman in Wales, shocking really, but glad to be part of the change. The Walker current has my work on show as part The Past, Present and Future exhibition. I was recently made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and I am looking forward to how this develops. Next, is the opening of my exhibition at The Williamson on the evening of 20th July. I am very fond of this gallery as I grew up a stone’s throw away in Grosvenor Road and this was where I first exhibited my work aged 14 years old. I intend this to be a real celebration of the gallery and the history of Birkenhead. Theo
When were you first introduced to art and was there a natural progression to ceramics and then bronze? My mother is very artistic, so it was always around me. I was normally found at the kitchen table drawing or making something. Whilst at school, Stuart Dimalow was a great art teacher and really inspired me to go to Withens Lane Art College, which I loved and attended for 3 years. I had finally found where I felt I belonged. I tried many methods and mediums with such knowledgeable tutors and a great Dora

50 WIRRAL DOG GROOMERS
GROOMING MARVELOUS! WE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT ONE OF WIRRAL’S POPULAR DOG GROOMER’S
What do you look for when choosing a dog groomer? Do you need a groomer who is fully trained to an extremely high standard? Do you want complete devotion to all dogs in their care and for them to treat them as their own? Or do you want them to care for the welfare of your pup and do everything they can to ensure that your dog is calm and relaxed? Could it be that you insist your groomer is fully trained in first aid for your pup? Wirral Dog Groomers (WDG) offer all of the above and more besides. Rita Krumins the owner set up the business over eight years ago in Wallasey.
Rita began creating a calming and relaxing environment for your pup to be groomed. A consultation accompanies each appointment so they can assess you and your dog’s individual needs, ensuring your dog is always happy. The well-being of your pooch is always their priority. Rita also prides herself in training her apprentices to a very high standard. There are six fully trained to date. Lauren Rush was appointed manager in 2017 and is irreplaceable. Lauren looks after the day to day running of the salon.

Lauren with Willow
Team WDG Lauren started at WDG in May 2017 as an apprentice after studying English at University. Competing in dog obedience and agility since the age of 10, dogs were her life in her early years and every spare moment was spent training. At weekends her mum and auntie would take her to competitions all over the UK. In 2008, aged 12, Lauren qualified to compete at Crufts in the Young Kennel Club ring with her soul dog, Willow, a Golden Retriever who sadly passed in August 2017. They made it to Crufts quite a few times becoming quite a team. “I worked part-time job during my apprenticeship, three nights a week at Gallaghers pub in Birkenhead, which allowed me to save for my very own first dog Howie, a Working Cocker Spaniel, who is now 3. He is my world, as is my little Shih Tzu, Flake who is 15 years old. I also met my now partner, Mike working there, so I will forever be grateful to the owners there, Sue and Frank for having me!” I have gained so much knowledge and experience working at WDG there is still so much to learn. I am so grateful to Rita a truly is an inspiring businesswoman and the success
Mac
of Wirral Dog Groomers goes to prove that. Ellie started work experience in 2018, followed by an apprenticeship. From day one it was evident that she was hard working and clients just adore her. There are currently two apprentices, Millie and Marija Who are proving to be a great asset to the team and will make incredible dog groomers. Wirral Dog Groomers will always go the extra mile for their clients and they are honest to the core. If a dog is not happy being groomed, they tell the owner. The dogs are treated like one of their own. Their main priority is the dog’s welfare. “All our dogs are so important to us and we love them all. There are some special dogs however, that simply steal your heart. For me, Mac is one such dog. A gorgeous Working Cocker Spaniel, who comes to us every month for his haircut. He inspired me to get my Working Cocker, Howie. He is just a dream to groom. I must admit, I become a bit selfish when Mac is in for his groom. I always want to groom him!”

‘COLLARED’ COLLARS ARE WORN BY DOGS TO IDENTIFY AND CONTROL AND OF COURSE A FASHION ACCESSORY. WE HAVE PICKED A MIXTURE OF STYLES AND PRICES OPPOSITE.
Most of our pooches wear a dog collar, even if they wear a harness to go out. They provide identification should the worst happen and your beloved dog goes missing. I think we can all remember the scene in Lady and the Tramp when Tramp gets taken to the pound because he has no collar. We would advise you to have your dog’s name and your telephone number on a dog tag, hopefully making it easier and quicker to be reunited with your pup. Of course, the humble dog collar is also used to attach a lead for walking, giving you better control of your dog and the ability to correct their behaviour with a gentle tug if necessary. Please be careful in your choice though as collars can cause damage if used a little sternly.
Which style you choose depends on breed, size and temperament; we would recommend you check with ‘The Kennel Club’ for breed standards advice. Your dog’s collar should fit perfectly and be suitable for the breed, if collars are too tight, they can injure your pooch, just as if the collar is too loose. There is no reason to take the collar off when at home or in the night, with some dogs suffering from anxiety should you remove the collar. You should however remove it if there is any skin irritation or excessive scratching in the area We have picked our favourites for both practicability and of course as a fashion statement for your beautiful pooch.

DOGS ARE MY LIFE! “THE RUG IN MY LOUNGE IS A FEMUR SHORT OF A T REX”. WITH 3 CHILDREN AND 5 DOGS, CLAIRE BARCLAY CERTAINLY HAS HER HANDS FULL
The first dog in Claire’s life was Shep when she was around three. His life with her family was shortlived as one day, for no reason, Shep bit her. Even at this very young age Claire’s zany character was evident as she shocked everyone and bit him back! Given the circumstances Shep was rehomed but I am not quite sure who they were trying to protect! Claire grew up in Culcheth, Warrington and had designs on becoming a PE Teacher. That dream was never fulfilled due to tragic circumstances. Her Mother was a nurse and worked nights. Thursday - Sunday she would be away from home. From age 5 - 15 Claire’s dad would enter her bedroom at least one of those nights each week and rape her. When Claire was around 8 years old, the family acquired a dog called Mac, a Skye Terrier, a breed known for its loyalty. He was Claire’s dog. She walked him, groomed him and he became more and more attached to her, sometimes sleeping in her bed.
He would also become her saviour because if he was in her bed, nothing would happen, no visitors came near. Mac would listen as Claire poured her heart out to her best friend, the only one she told. If only he knew how special he was. Her dad, for all the wrong reasons, rehomed Mac without telling anyone. Claire was devastated and having none of it. She loved Mac and moreover, needed him. She kicked up an almighty fuss until her Mum brought Mac back home. Claire was at least spared some of the visits. At 15 she joined the Police Cadets and at 18 joined the Cheshire Constabulary working in Warrington and was the Youngest Police officer in the Country at that time. Her 25 year career included being one of the Queen’s bodyguards, working undercover, on the drugs unit, in community teams and on firearms. Because of her past, she had made a promise to herself to help as many people as she could.
Claire pictured with her five current dogs
Mac lived until he was 15 but Claire had left and bought her own home and moved away by then. Mac remained with her family as it wasn’t fair for him to be alone at his age whilst Claire went out to work. Approaching her 21st Birthday she answered a Police call to attend a sudden death. It was he Father. Claire didn’t react, nor did she have any feelings and filled out all the forms like for the death of a stranger. Her dad was never prosecuted for his crimes because no one knew only Mac but at least it was finally over. Ralph, an 8 week old Rottweiler puppy came into her life soon after. Claire named him Ralph so he could say his name when he barked! He lived a long and happy life and was joined by two rescue dogs; Fudge and Scooter. Claire met he now husband Richard online eight years ago - he was in Afghanistan at the time closing Camp Bastion. They emailed for a solid six months and really hit it off. That all important question raised its head, “Do you like dogs?” Claire asked, “As it really won’t work otherwise”. “I have a Rottweiler called Scooter” Richard replied and they knew instantly that it was a perfect match! They just had to decide on how to deal with two Scooters in the family! They settled on Big Scooter and Little Scooter, so imaginative! Richard became a great strength and was the first person Claire told of her childhood trauma. The pair married
and one morning soon after Claire was driving to work at Runcorn Police station. She stopped the car and decided there and then that she had had enough. Her life in the Police was all about saving people and she was done. It was time to look after her family and herself. Claire’s Brother and his wife were posted to Cyprus with the army for two years and worked at a dog rescue centre on their days off. They sent two rescues home that Claire housed until their return. Big Scooter had sadly passed away and Claire now wanted a dog to keep little Scooter company. They bought an Italian Spinone, cross, Willow and really liked the characteristics of the breed. They went in search of another and found Fred a thoroughbred Spinone who is 100% Richard’s dog. Lisa was a rescue Spinone from the floods in Italy, a working farm dog and Cleo was an end of years rescue. She was also in the floods in Italy but she was beaten badly at her rehoming until S.O.F.A (Spinone Overseas For Adoption) rescued her and Claire and Richard took her on. Ember was the last lucky dog to join the Barclay pack and is a Griffon Bleu de Gascogne rescued from Spain via the Spanish Griffon Rescue. Life is hectic and Claire and Richard sleep in separate beds so they can accommodate the dogs, but neither would change it for the world. A brave lady who was saved by her dog went on to save as many people and dogs she could and still does to this day.

Let’s meet the team: Laura Cohen-Smith Although she doesn’t work at the pool day to day, Laura is the genius mind behind DoggyPaddle. After looking for somewhere for her dog to swim following a diagnosis of elbow dysplasia, she started researching facilities in the area. She wanted to find a place for fun swims, rather than hydrotherapy but found them to be limited and too far away. She decided the answer was to open a business and DoggyPaddle was born… Stuart Smith Married to Laura and owner of DoggyPaddle, Stuart took early retirement following a 33 year career as a nurse. He has owned dogs all his adult life and honestly, he prefers them to people. He’s very interested in the psychology of dogs and their behaviour as well as being passionate about their wellbeing and health. He truly believes swimming is the best form of physical exercise that they can undertake for all the same reasons as its good for us humans! Craig Evans Craig joined the team in 2021 after a long career at Pets at Home, where he gained many years of training and handling experience with a wide range of dogs. 66 CHESHIRE AND NORTH WALES DOG HANDLING SECTION
LIVING THE DREAM STEPH ALLINSON TAKES HER TWO BEST FRIENDS, LUTHER & OTIS, TO WORK WITH HER EVERYDAY
Steph had never had a dog of her own. She loved all animals and spent most of her spare time as a youngster looking after her horses. There were dogs on the farm, and dogs visiting the farm so she was never short of canine company. At 22, Steph joined the Greater Manchester Police as a response cop on the street answering 999 calls although her dream job was on the dog handling section. During her 7 years there, she met her husband Craig and the decision was made to sign up for Cheshire Police so they could set up home together. Steph worked in Runcorn and Ellesmere Port during the next 4 years taking time out for maternity leave. Lola was born in 2015 to complete their family.
Response work was taking its toll and it was time for a new challenge. Almost on request, an advert for the Cheshire and North Wales Dog Handling Section appeared on the notice board. It was very unusual for the position to come up. It was known in the Police as ‘dead man’s shoes’ as you would have to wait for someone to retire before a position became vacant. It had previously been advertised three times in her career. Once when she was on probation, the second time she was on maternity leave so this time, she had to submit her application. Interviews followed and as the process progressed, Steph was getting closer and closer to the dream. November 2018 Steph was awarded the position.

Gizmo was Steph’s first dog but unfortunately he didn’t make the grade. It is really hard to find a dog to do the job. ‘Police dogs have to have certain qualities and above all have to be brave and not all dogs are. As the Police, we would never force them to do anything they didn’t want to do. The dog has to want to do it. We put them in dangerous situations so they have to be able to cope.” Raven was the second dog to be paired with Steph and although she was great on paper and passed her training, when things got real she was out of her depth and just didn’t make the grade. Both dogs went to a loving home outside the force. It was a few weeks before Luther came into Steph’s life. A three year old, 45 kilo German Shepherd was brought in to the kennels while Steph was cleaning out. Luther wasn’t over friendly and just acknowledged her presence. When Steph took a call from the Training
Luther during firearms training
Sargent telling her that Luther was to be her dog and instructing her to take him home that night, Steph thought it was an April Fool joke because he was so big. It was actually the start of their working relationship. She put him in her car and began the two weeks granted to bond with her partner. Luther was born into the Police and was fully licensed. He was on their breeding programme so Police work was in his blood. It is not like having a pet, these dogs are highly trained and are very much working dogs. Although he lives at Steph’s home, he doesn’t live in it. He lives in Kennels outside provided by the Police. Don’t be alarmed, they are beautiful kennels, warm and cosy and it is Luther’s preferred domain. As long as his needs are met and his routine is fulfilled, Luther is a very happy dog.
Steph with Otis

Otis during drugs training
Nightshifts tend to be for Luther. More reactive jobs like house break ins, shop raids etc. Whereas days are usually warrant led jobs more suited to Otis. It was an absolute pleasure talking to Steph and gaining insight to the dog handling section. She is so passionate about her dogs and loves to talk about their achievements. I can’t help but feel they are lucky to have her although she would have it the other way around.
“
During my interview for Greater Manchester Police I was asked where I see myself in five years from now. I replied ‘In the dog handling section.’ My interviewer rolled his eyes having probably heard that answer 10 times already that day. I wish I could remember his name so I could visit him with my dogs!
“
Steph and Luther were licensed in April 2019 which means they can go out on the streets as a Police team. He is most definitely her dog and won’t let anyone within 10 foot. Luther is a ground scent dog and able to track human scent following their trail on the ground. He can track items stolen and discarded along the route too as they retain human scent. Quite incredible! Another part of his role involves crowd control and public order and because of his size and bark he always gets good results. Chase and detain is the last part of his work. If there is a fleeing suspect and Steph let’s Luther go, he is trained to bite. Once the criminal falls to the floor, he will hold until Steph gets there. Police dogs work until they are 8 and are then retired and desensitised. Their handler is given first refusal to keep them but if the circumstances aren’t right, they will be placed with someone who is waiting for a police dog. Each dog handler in Cheshire is encouraged to have two dogs. Steph’s second dog Otis, came from her retiring Training Sergeant who acknowledged that Otis still had a good working life ahead of him but wanted to place him with the right handler. Otis is trained in drugs, cash, firearms and ammunition. Again using scent to detect. Both dogs are in the van with Steph on every shift and then dependant on the job that is called in, one or other of the dogs will team up with her.
