Welcome to the Autumn edition of Wirral Well Being magazine Laura Seymour Editor/creator I hope you enjoy our Autumn edition of Wirral Well-being Magazine. I love the change of seasons, such a beautiful time of year. It always makes me reflective but equally look forward to what's ahead. My favorite autumn quote is... "This is the time of year when even the trees show us how beautiful it can be to let go" I hope everyone is doing well. We have some wonderful features, help and advice in this issue and some great services to signpost you to. We have been busy receiving lots of responses from our Wirral Well- Being Awards.

TOGETHER ALL ARE ABLE

We are a disabled people’s user led organisation and self advocacy group called Together All Are Able. We are based in Wirral. Self advocacy is about people speaking up for themselves. We are looking for people with disabilities or mental health issues to join as members to help with the work we do. We do a coffee event every 2 weeks on a Friday from 12pm till 1pm on zoom. All our activities at the moment are happening online. This includes our supervisory board, where the directors consult with the membership meeting about the direction of the organisation. This doubles as a self advocacy group. We also run workshops and training sessions in areas such as self advocacy and the Care Act. We also hold focus groups, help people with disabilities to speak up, and hold meetings to make sure people with disabilities get their voice heard about different consultation exercises and help people with coproduction (Working Together). This is an area in which we need some help.

The first nomination goes to Ria Hinton for her brilliant work promoting Mental Health within the workplace at Innospec. Then we have Julie Perrigo from Just Breathe who we have an editorial piece about in this edition, for her amazing work changing lives with her mindfulness and meditation practice. Last but certainly nor least we have our little biggest fan Albert Mcdonald who loves Wirral Well- Being Magazine and always looks out for it. Albert has become the latest addition to our mailing list.

If you are interested or would like more information email us on toaaa@outlook.com . We also have a Facebook page called Together All Are Able (https://m.facebook. com/178554868943083) and run a Facebook group called the Wirral disability self advocacy group (https:// www.facebook.com/groups/163413553693677/?ref=share ) and we have twitter feed @able_together.

DIGITAL HEALTH What is digital health as we know it today? The application of information and communications technology to provide digital health interventions to prevent disease and improve quality of life isn't a new concept. However, in the face of global concerns related to aging, child illness and mortality, epidemics and pandemics, high costs, and the effects of poverty and racial discrimination on access to healthcare digital health platforms, health systems and related technology continue to grow in importance and to evolve. It can cover everything from wearable gadgets to ingestible sensors, from mobile health apps to artificial intelligence, from robotic carers to electronic records. For the past century healthcare management and delivery has been centred in hospitals and clinics. This is beginning to change as healthcare measures and increasingly numbers of care delivery are migrating into homes and on mobile devices. The COVID-19 pandemic has only accelerated this transition. With increasing access to care and improving convenience, this move towards platforms operated by for profit firms raises concerns about privacy equality and duty of care that will have to be addressed. In addition to this the change in measuring health and delivering health will also have many benefits. First, they can capture enormous volumes of personal data. They can give individuals more control over their own health. Giving a sense of self efficiency and helping them to understand and monitor various diseases or conditions. Because smart phones, watches at home monitoring devices are increasingly ubiquitous, these tools can connect individuals to direct care. The Digital devices that we carry, wear or have in our homes are now constantly measuring our health and this will soon be the

4

means in which we receive care. The infrastructure is now in place with over 81% of people owning a smartphone and 40% a fitness tracker. The capabilities of these devices are increasing and need for care in the home rising. The promise is that our health will improve, and care will be more accessible. Pro’s • Reduces inefficiencies • Improves access • Reduces cost • Increases quality • Make medicine more personal for each patient • Reduces spread of illness if possible • Time saving • Reduces cancellations and no shows of appointments Cons • Has a potential detrimental mental health impact • Increased cyber bullying potential • When technology is used in excess it can cause depression, obesity, sleep disruption • Privacy protection, cybersecurity • Complicated health causing concerns for patients and doctors In summary using digital health has become unavoidable in the practice of medicine. It plays a an increasingly important role in healthcare today transforming service across the globe. Digital health may offer real opportunities to improve medical outcome and enhance efficiency. But now more than ever after the last 18 months we must never under estimate the equal importance of human touch.

THISTLE The thistle represents overcoming adversity and difficulties. It symbolises resilience and in Celtic regions represents devotion, bravery, determination and strength. The national emblem of Scotland the purple Thistle is a proud regal plant that can grow to the height of five feet and has no natural enemies due to its vicious spines that help protect it like a porcupine. So, what healing properties does this plant possess? Milk thistle! This natural detox a is renowned for liver boosting properties. Milk thistle has been an herbal healer since ancient Greek times. AloeWithUs

Improve your health and well-being and help reduce climate change. AloeWithUs is a home-based company in West Kirby sharing the benefits of superior quality pure inner leaf aloe Vera gel based products. Aloe is the lifeblood of Forever, The Aloe Vera company. Their aloe fields are where our journey begins. With over 50 million aloe vera plants in their aloe fields they are able to cleanse the earth of hundreds of millions of tons of carbon dioxide every year. In fact, they are a CARBON NEGATIVE COMPANY! Did you know one aloe barbadensis millar plant is equivalent to 20 trees? Changes in the climate are not something new. In the past, natural factors, such as volcanic eruptions and El Nino, caused fluctuations in the temperature and rainfall. What is new, is the influence of humans on climate change. We drive our cars, are heating our homes when it is cold outside, and use energy to cook. These day-to-day actions cause the emission of greenhouse gases, such as methane and carbon. These gases prevent the heat admitted by the Earth to escape, causing global warming. Recent studies show but nature-based solutions can contribute up to 35% of carbon emission intake required to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius. Vegetation causes the sequestration of carbon, decreasing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere and subsequently reducing the greenhouse effect,

/aloewithus /aloewithus

ultimately leading to the mitigation of global warming. Vegetation also causes cooling of the soil, decreasing the evaporation of water from the soil leading to increased water availability for plants, animals and humans. In addition, greening stimulates the water cycle, causing increased rainfall and the retention of water in the soil. This increased in the soil moisture content makes the land available for agriculture again, producing food and income for local communities. How is AloeWithUs helping? By simply swapping your skin care, daily personal care and well-being products, sharing with your colleagues, friends and family YOU ARE SUPPORTING OUR PLANET AND HELPING YOUR FAMILY TO LOOK AND FEEL BETTER. Sadly Anthony passed away on November 1st 2012 leaving Ian in charge. This was obviously a very upsetting time on all the family and has given us some time to reflect on the what the family and store has been over the years. Joan although semi retired, can usually be found around somewhere talking to customers or just chatting away, too well really anyone that will listen lol, some of which are our second or third generation, and to all of you we thank you for all you valued custom and recommendations over the years. So now a new chapter for Babylicious is about to continue!

Having a baby is all about product knowledge. By coming into a smaller independent store as first time parents you can learn so much more than just reading reviews and blogs etc and who won what in which competition or magazine or going into larger competitors who usually only know their own ranges or market leading brands. This is an ever changing industry with new technologies and safety standards out every year! What might seem like a bargain might not be at all!! Here at Babylicious we are lucky to have Ian, who has grown up within the nursery industry and has been asked to be on the BPA (Baby Products association) committee and is the only committee member from a independent store out of 10 member from all sectors of the nursery industry.he has no intention of leaving and they have no intention of letting him go his roles entail :To help judge the concept and innovation awards every year, this is a short list compiled down from thousands of applicants with new ideas that will come to market through private finance or investment from within the industry, to bring you the customers the best of what is to have for your children in the future. Most importantly though is his role as a Banta judge. this is where all companies are asked to enter there own products into the awards, to be stringently compared to each other, an be judged by 10 separate ambassadors for the industry, as to what is the best within the industry. With this insight Ian is always shopping two years ahead

of what is coming to market in the future, and has helped many companies come to sell there products within the UK. With the advancements in carseat technology within the past two years its very exciting what is ahead in this sector particularly for 2013. We hope you will use this information as a guide, and follow us on Facebook in the future to see what you can expect! It's going to be a very interesting and eye-catching year for all of us. Thank you for reading this description of where we place our store within the market palace, we will of course answer questions you may have to the best of our abilities. Shop now online www.babylicious.org and dont forget to follow us on facebook and instagram or come down and meet us at the shop, always a warm welcome.

WYLD STLLYNS! Managing fear Remember the old classic 80’s flick Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure? I revisit this film every now and again, just for that nostalgic feeling and to listen to the old soft metal soundtrack. It takes me right back to 8-year-old me pumping these bodacious tunes through the futuristic technology of a cassette Walkman. They were the days. What was the name of the band that Bill and Ted formed? When I watched it this time around heard them call out the name of their band with passion and pride and that cool dude rock band attitude it struck a chord with me. I will tell you why...

I have been developing my relationship with fear and how it affects me. I have been observing my actions when confronted with it and learning how to treat fear as a companion rather than an enemy. Leading up to a significant event like public speaking for example, my mind can fill up with all kinds of chatter. It can snowball and before you know it I have imagined a potential outcome that is as far from reality as Earth is from the microwave background. "What if I trip over a wire and fall flat on my face?" "What if I completely forget what I'm going to say?" I refer to this inner chatter as my “wild stallions” and in my mind, they are breaking into a gallop and its time to reign them in. It doesn’t take long to start imagining a reality that’s not so different from a dream or a nightmare. So how can I stop my wild stallions before they freeze me on the spot and stop me from performing? I have come up with a four-step process that will stop these WYLD STALLYNS from gaining momentum (this all becomes dialogue in my mind): Step 1. Recognise it and stop First you need to recognise it and have a trigger word or sentence to snap you out of it, I say to my self in the voice of Bill and Ted (yes this is happening inside my head) “WYLD STALLYNS!!”Maybe even throw the guitar sound in there too. By simply alerting yourself to the fact that this is happening and recognising that it is happening can really help control it.

19

WIRRAL WELL

BEING

Step 2. Hit the reset button Having a statement that can bring about some perspective like “ All we are is dust in the wind dude” profoundly stated by Ted after a conversation with the ancient philosopher Socrates or So-Crates where he points out that “Like sands of the hour glass so are the days of our lives.” Take a step back. Ask your self are my thoughts becoming dream like? Stop wasting valuable time and energy on these thoughts right now and get back in the game. Step 3. Back to the moment The language in our mind is important for overcoming fear and being able to keep this herd of wild beasts at bay. Use a simple statement to snap you back into the moment and completely reject the madness that was about to happen. I use these two clearly understated and under celebrated phrases from Bill and Ted “Party on dude” and “be excellent to each other”. This helps remind me of my values and remember to show love to everyone especially to myself. Step 4. Reflect “So it was me who stole my Dads Keys” At this point in the film Bill and Ted realise that they actually have the power to think things into reality. By reflecting on their actions that landed them in a jail cell, they decided that later they would go back in time and steal the keys. By reflecting on a situation and writing it down and look at it from multiple angles, I learn from it and thus give myself the best chance of it not happening again in the future. Just like Ted planning to go and steal his Dads keys and plant them so they can escape from jail, I can now escape my own time travelling prison cell. There are two ways that these WYLD STALYNS come into existence in the first place – depressive thoughts of regret from an event in the past or anxiety induced predictions of a future event that does not exist. Instead of allowing myself to time travel and mess with timelines, I prefer to stay just where I am – in the moment. Obviously, I have made this model fit the movie for an entertaining read (I hope), but what four step model can you think of to reign your own time travelling WYLD STALYNS in? Be excellent to each other and Party on dudes!

YELLOW ROOT What is Yellow Root?

Whether you’re already aware of the powerful benefits of turmeric and curcumin, or just discovering them for the first time, we know it can be tricky to decide which supplement is right for you. Curcumin is the key active ingredient in turmeric, giving it its instantly recognisable golden glow. Curcumin is responsible for many of the healing properties that the spice has been used for, for thousands of years1. This includes natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as well as helping to lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels. But did you know that in its pure form, curcumin has a difficult time being absorbed into the body? Cortiba Health’s Yellow Root Curcumin is the product of breakthrough technology that increases absorption, meaning your body is able to take in maximum levels of curcumin more efficiently. That means Yellow Root can get to work quickly, aiding your bodily systems with its antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties2.

What makes Yellow Root different?

In its natural form, turmeric isn’t very soluble. This makes it difficult for the body to absorb. The majority of turmeric supplements are made using crushed turmeric. This means most of the dose passes straight through the body, because the curcumin isn’t water soluble. C3 Cura™ Technology is the solution to this industry-wide problem. Cortiba Health’s unique, innovative, and patented technology transforms the poorly soluble natural compounds in turmeric into a radically soluble, nano-sized form. This means that more curcumin can be absorbed by the body faster and more efficiently.

Benefits include: • • • •

Supports healthy immune functions Natural anti-inflammatory with antioxidant effects Helps to lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels Provides 100% of your recommended daily Vitamin A intake

Yellow Root Curcumin B12

Vitamin B12 is crucial for cell regulation and nerve function, and plays an important role in protein and fat metabolism. Yellow Root Curcumin D3

Vitamin D3 regulates calcium in the body, and maintains healthy bone, joint and muscle function. Yellow Root D3 combines quality, high performance liquid curcumin from organic turmeric root with the vital support of Vitamin D3. Benefits include: • Maintains healthy bones and joints • Helps improve your body’s inflammatory response • A natural way to help maintain mobility • Helps treat anxiety and depression

DEVELOPING GRATITUDE So, why do we need to develop gratitude? If we are honest, deep down we are the centre of our universe. Think about how we take the people that surround us for granted, we assume our friends and family will always be there. What if suddenly they weren’t there? Once we start to develop a sense of gratitude, we begin to appreciate our relationships, we begin to see how we our connect with others, this makes ours and their lives happier. Alongside our relationships, we grasp at wanting more material things, money, houses, status, and so on, thinking that more possessions and higher social standing are the true source of happiness. And so, instead of appreciating what we have, we concentrate on what we don’t have. We are filled with resentments and strong opinions about what we deserve, and why we especially deserve it. With this blindness towards our relationships, wealth, and freedoms, we don’t see how much we truly have, what we should be grateful for, and what we owe to others. This doesn’t mean we should not enjoy all that we have, it’s wonderful if we’re able to have all the good things in life, it’s how we view this good fortune that matters. We take it all for granted and so we need to revaluate our attitude towards our everyday life. If we can develop a sense of appreciation and gratitude, it will automatically improve our feeling of happiness and wellbeing. One of the ways we can improve this sense of wellbeing is through meditation. Meditating on gratitude enables us to become more familiar with and develop a feeling of appreciation. So, begin the meditation by adopting a comfortable position and spend a few moments relaxing and settling our body and mind. Concentrate on the breath for one or two minutes. As you continue to breathe, let your attention rest gently on your breath. Feel the movement as it enters and exits your body. Each time you exhale, breathe out any tension.

Firstly, think that you have a body and a mind, that you are healthy. You are able to use and enjoy all your senses. That you also have the time and freedom to be able be able to reflect on these qualities. Feel gratitude for having the life you have. Then move your mind onto how fortunate you are to possess material things. You have been blessed with, food, shelter, clothes, money and so on, you have all this when there are a vast number of beings who are less fortunate. Next, recall the people and animals in your life. Run through the reasons you have to be grateful for them. Consider not just how kind and so on they may be but think how your life would be without them. Now just concentrate and try to experience how this sense of gratitude feels. Let that feeling fill up your whole body. As you finish the meditation, return your attention to your breath, and try to remember that sensation of gratitude. Alternatively, you can choose to concentrate on just one topic to be grateful for. You don’t have to make this a formal meditation; as your lying in bed just before you go to sleep, or when you first wake up, you can contemplate all the things you have in your life to be thankful for.

Wishing You Peace and Happiness Bill Seymour – Buddhist.

Why are women using CBD products – and can they help? According to research, 55% of CBD users are women. While there are many different reasons why people take CBD, and scientific research into potential medical benefits is still in its early stages, there are some firm believers that CBD products could support some women in areas such as their menstrual cycle and PMS, along with the menopause and other areas of wellbeing. Multi-award winning CBD manufacturer, Orange County CBD shares some of the many reasons why women might be turning to CBD:

To support mood

Many women find they feel a bit flat or experience low mood as their period approaches, or a common issue is that they have mood swings. Low mood can also be also a problem for some women going through the menopause, and a lack of sleep due to night sweats can also contribute to feeling out of sorts. Whilst there is not yet medical proof that CBD products can make a positive difference, many people who take CBD regularly do report that it seems to help support their mood in a beneficial way.

To aid sleep

Many women experience poor sleep during certain points of their cycle and at various times when going through the menopause, which can affect every area of life negatively. Lots of women report that CBD seems to help support a good sleep wake cycle when taken daily over a sustained period of time, which early research suggests looks promising. The quantity and quality of sleep we have makes an essential contribution to maintaining good physical and mental health at every time in our lives, but can have extra importance during times of hormonal fluctuation. Experiencing cramps during your cycle is never fun and for some people, they can be severe enough that they have a real impact on daily life for at least a few days every month. While more scientific research on CBD and muscle relaxation needs to be done, some early studies do show promising signs that it could have a positive effect on tight and contracting muscles (which cause menstrual cramps) and pain. This could also mean that CBD might have a positive effect for those who experience discomfort due to hormonal fluctuations during their cycle.

To assist with managing stress

For many people, much of the stress and anxiety they experience can be caused by external factors, which sometimes are not within their control. However, CBD is known for being one way to aid relaxation, and some of the methods for taking CBD can also help with winding down, such as using a CBD bath bomb or enjoying a relaxing CBD muscle rub.

In skincare

Whilst this is obviously not something that relates solely to women, many people like to use skin care products that contain CBD, such as face creams. Thinking of trying CBD? From taking CBD oil under the tongue or as a mouth spray, to snacking on a tasty CBD gummy or two when required or applying CBD topically, there are so many different ways to take CBD that there are options to suit every woman.

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT WHEN SMALL CHANGES CAN MAKE A BIG IMPACT How many of us are wanting to make changes in our lives so that we feel calmer, healthier and happier? So often we make up our minds to make big changes based on depriving ourselves e.g. I need to lose 3 stones and I’m never going to eat junk food again. Unfortunately by trying to make such big changes we’re often unable to keep up our good intentions and then comes a sense of failure and criticism of ourselves for not making change. A way of making successful change for life is to look at creating intentions based on what you want more of in life rather than “punishing” yourself through restrictions. Take a moment to think of three things you would like more of in the next couple of months… The next step is to turn these positive intentions into habits that last. The key to these changes is to build on success rather than repetition. Successful and positive emotions help us to make lasting changes to how we live and how we see ourselves. • Choose Choose 3 intentions that you really want to have more of in your life e.g. to eat healthier, to exercise more, to get more sleep. • Keep it small By keeping the bar low you set yourself up to succeed. For each intention think of how to make this new habit as small as you can e.g. to eat 1 more piece of fruit or vegetables a day; to do one yoga stretch or one push up. • When Decide on the when to do this new habit. Research has shown that new habits that are linked to our daily routine are more likely to stick e.g. as you put on your dressing gown or after your breakfast. • Where Create the environment so that it’s ready for your new habit e.g. leave a dumbbell or yoga mat out ready for a new exercise. • Notice Each time you do your new small habit notice the feeling of success that comes with it. • A fresh new day Whatever has happened the day before, each new day gives us a new opportunity to build more positive change into our lives. • Find your tribe Over the last year it’s been challenging to connect face to face with others that are making the same life style changes, however as restrictions lift connecting is becoming easier. Facebook/Instagram, podcasts can all help us to find these connections and to help us to

celebrate our successes with others. Make today the day you start including more positive habits into your daily life. As you make small changes and feel successful these small changes can grow into bigger changes Be Well Learning has a four week programme “Small changes, big impact”. This course is designed to help groups of people live a happier and healthier life through making small changes. Recent participants who have worked through the programme with us have seen some major positive changes in their lives. Some of the benefits they reported: • Getting out for exercise in nature on a daily basis • Having a better sleep routine • Making changes to their diet and cooking more meals from scratch • Spending quality 1:1 time with their children and feeling calmer • Making time for self-care • Finding a new job and enjoying it whilst balancing the demands of family life • Decluttering their home environment and feeling clearer in their thoughts • Doing a 3 P’s gratitude diary in the evenings If you would like greater help and support in making change and are interested in our “Small Changes, Big Impact” programme then please get in touch. You’re getting ready for a peaceful night sleep when you see something moving on the floor next to your bed. A spider! You yell out for a non-arachnophobe to help. They jump into action. The shoe slams down on the hardwood. Thank goodness! Then you see the spider scurry under the bed, you feel the fear rising, you know you can’t sleep in that room tonight. Your poor aiming hero tries to convince you that it’s a just small spider who is more afraid of you. You don’t see it that way . Your thoughts spiral “What if it crawls on me when I’m sleeping?” “What if it bites me?” “What if it crawls in my mouth?” You end up sleeping on the couch in the living room. Why is it that two people can experience the same situation, but react so differently? Their perception, anxiety is based on a perception of danger. By avoiding what we fear, we protect ourselves from danger or what we perceive to be dangerous. Anxiety is a protective mechanism meant to keep us safe. But when anxiety interferes with our life, impacting enjoyment and functioning, it has risen to the level of a disorder. This occurs when our perception of danger is distorted. Perception is distorted as it feels like the spider is huge. Distress becomes intolerable as you dwell on the thought of it lurking under your bed. Possibility and probability are confused as it seems likely to crawl into your mouth. And danger is amplified as the spider is likely to be deadly. It’s difficult to remain calm when your imagination is running wild with possibilities. Even if you know your thoughts are irrational you may be unable to control them, which is one reason why people who suffer with anxiety struggle. The frightening thoughts often result in physical symptoms like racing heart, sweating, difficulty breathing, sleeplessness, stomach issues, and light-

headedness; just to name a few. Seemingly, the choice is to endure symptoms or avoid the situation altogether. Thankfully there is a third option. This is where treatment comes in. What is the most effective treatment for anxiety? I use a tailored multi-therapy approach which can include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), counselling, hypnotherapy and coaching. Together we challenge the way you think about a situation (a huge deadly spider) effect how we feel (afraid) and how we behave (avoid the bed). We tend to assign meanings to specific situations and the things that happen in our lives. Most often it’s not the actual situation causing our anxiety, but the meanings we attribute; accurate or not. In our example, meanings have been assigned to spiders. It isn’t the spider causing anxiety; it’s the meaning assigned to the spider. When you suffer with an anxiety disorder, thoughts are given a lot of meaning, are taken very seriously, are repeated in the mind, and therefore have a lot of power. By changing irrational thought patterns and confronting fears, many of my client learn to step beyond their comfort zone to attain the freedom they desire. By learning a certain mindset, anxious situations are approached differently as you learn to tolerate uncertainty and distress. What was once uncomfortable becomes comfortable with repeated practice. Mindfulness for stress interruption, emotional resilience & well being.

Julie Perrigo - Founder My Journey to Mindfulness

A 25 year career in I.T. left me feeling drained and simply wondering what life was all about. Life had lost its meaning and purpose and just getting through the day became a chore. Whilst I’ve worked in toxic environments in the past, this wasn’t the problem. I just felt like I was wasting my life. On top of this, I found that I worried all of the time and just couldn’t stop my mind from thinking. This took its toll on my health and I began to feel depressed. This wasn’t my first episode, over the course of my life, I’ve suffered from stress a number of times and it often led to exhaustion and depression. Around this time I began to meditate and discovered the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course. After one of the meditation sessions I noticed a stillness in my mind, unlike anything I had ever experienced. This motivated me to find out more so I embarked on a 3 year masters degree with Aberdeen University. It wasn’t my intention to teach but when I began to experience the benefits of mindfulness and to understand the neuroscience, I literally wanted to tell the world that dealing with stress is possible.

What’s On Mindfulness Based Living Course Discover what mindfulness is really about with this 8 week group course. Includes FREE book & App and qualification from the British Mindfulness Association. Mind21 If you’re too busy to commit to an 8 week course but want to learn to improve your emotional resilience, stress management and overall well being, Mind21 is available online. Includes a 21 day course plus 9 relaxation journeys & a 21 day 10 minute challenge. Beautiful Journeys If it’s time to introduce a self care routine, or improve your sleep, try these 9 visualisations available online. 21 Day Challenge Want to experience mindfulness but don’t know where to start? 10 minutes per day is a way to learn the techniques and experience the impact on your daily life. Wirral Wave I also host the well being show on Wirral Wave radio. www.wirralwave.co.uk

Not only that, but many of the experiences we have around stress are natural. The problem is we live in a culture that demonises mental health, issues so many people are reluctant to discuss their experiences. So having qualified with the British Mindfulness Association & Aberdeen University, it’s my mission, to empower people to develop the skills they need to manage stress in a gentle, supportive way.

Dealing with Lockdown

I was just getting started when lockdown hit and my first group met for just 2 weeks before we had to close down. I really didn’t know what to do next until quite by chance I came across an online marketing course. Realising that many people were turning to online courses during the pandemic, I thought this was a great way to get the stress message out to more people. I wanted to take the best of the leading courses and design something that was easy to follow and accessible to busy people. Based on research from popular mindfulness courses including stress reduction; mindfulness based living; Google’s “Search Inside Yourself” and the mindfulness way through depression, I created Mind21. Practice is a crucial part of mindfulness as we’re literally rewiring the neural pathways in the brain. Mind21 requires a daily commitment of 30 minutes and weaves the science of mindfulness & stress, with a 20 minute practice. Before it’s launch Mind21 was trialled with a research group who reported improved sleep; an ability to step back from irritating situations; more emotional stability, less worrying and a general sense of being more in control of themselves. It’s since become our best selling course and a recent upgrade helps customers continue their practice at the end of the course with 9 relaxation journeys & a 21 day 10 minute challenge.

Positivity Club is a special and unique group for children aged 4 to 12 years, which aims to support their wellbeing, improve their self-esteem, teach them to express themselves and their feelings freely. Positivity Club offers fun and interactive sessions, which enables the children to talk about their feelings in a fun way, which create memories and support them. The classes are always personalised to the children’s needs and interest and parents can voice any worries, concerns or areas to work on before the sessions begin. Although, we are Positivity Club, we teach the children it’s OK when we don’t feel positive and talk about ways to reach out or express when talking is not so easy. The children lead their own conversations and discussions and it has been heart-warming to watch them support each other and relate to one another. There have been some real moments of pride, honesty and lots of laughter too (especially when we gave laughter therapy a whirl!) At Positivity Club, the children are the centre of everything we do, however it is also our aim to support their main caregivers, therefore I have been running Parent Positivity Club’s also online. During these sessions, it’s a great time to have a chat to parents, discuss their worries and teach them the science behind children’s behaviours, thoughts and feelings.

We truly believe that by doing this work, we are making a difference to the stigma around mental health and teaching skills that can support through later life. For more information: positivityclubwithjess@gmail.com
