EDITOR’S LETTER
THE CONCEPT OF THE OUTDOOR ROOM – a space filled with the comforts of home minus a roof and four walls – is gaining ground, so to speak, in Canada. Many homeowners are transforming their backyards into lifestyle spaces designed for lounging, swimming, cooking, dining, entertaining and maybe singing Kumbaya around a firepit. I believe that the interest in lifestyle-oriented garden rooms comes from our collective need for refuge from the frenetic pace of modern life. There’s nothing new about outdoor rooms. The ancients had them. One place to see historic outdoor rooms in a relatively intact state is in the archeological ruins of Pompeii where, until Mount Vesuvius blew its stack in 79 ad, burying the city in volcanic ash, people lived in aesthetic surroundings. Villas belonging to wealthy citizens boasted enclosed outdoor spaces replete with water features, potagères and patios for dining and entertaining. Even the humblest abodes had tiny gardens that bore herbs, fruits and vegetables. The citizens of Pompeii spent a lot of time outdoors, and their gardens gave them an opportunity to enjoy private, contemplative space. Two millennia later, we still love our outdoor rooms. Some of us even eschew leaving town during the summer, opting instead for staycations around the backyard swimming pool. In this Outdoors issue, we take you into several well-designed outdoor rooms. We show you one designed for a Westmount couple who craved a sophisticated space for dining and entertaining once their children had grown up and no longer played on the lawn. The design of the multi-level deck and patio marries well with that of their Victorian home. And like those villa gardens of Pompeii where water played such an important role, the Westmount garden boasts a pond with a burbling fountain.
p.s.
Another outdoor room profiled in this issue replaced a formerly unremarkable backyard. Now well-outfitted with a barbecue, spa, firepit, dining area and bar, it is a full-service outdoor living space that its owners use every day during the warm season. And finally, we take you into the home of designer Jean Monet, who downsized to a bungalow from a large two-storey home a year ago. Jean’s backyard is an outdoor room that has a covered patio designed for al fresco meals and a garden that is a verdant backdrop for sculptural art. What all of the gardens in this issue have in common is that they are circumscribed by hedges or tree screens to create a sense of enclosure and privacy. They are perfect getaways, places in which their owners decompress and escape the demands of the workaday world. Life was slower in ancient Pompeii, but I’ll bet its inhabitants felt the same way about their villa gardens.

Desrosiers’s decision to take the time needed to do the project struck a chord with Tracey, given that she’s still working on her latest book, which examines Canada’s economic expansion and the social wounds to families caused by World War II. DREW HADLEY Drew Hadley is a Montreal photographer who specializes in advertising and interior design. “What struck me about the Longueuil home I photographed for this issue was the well-designed kitchen with its strong, clean lines and minimalist approach, he says. “Having seen the original layout of the home, I was amazed to see what the designer, Jean Monet, did to rejuvenate the space. Drew also photographed two gardens for this Outdoors issue.
JEAN MONET Designer Jean Monet loves summer weather, and says it was a particular treat for him to be outdoors styling two urban gardens for this issue. What the gardens have in common is that they are both designed for al fresco living and entertaining. Jean says he is also thrilled to show Montreal Home’s readers his own Longueuil home, which he renovated and redesigned to suit his downsized lifestyle. Jean’s home boasts a beautifully appointed garden that draws him outside to enjoy the warm weather all summer long.

BLISS A new outdoor room becomes a focus for entertaining
BY PHILLIPA RISPIN // PHOTOGRAPHY: DREW HADLEY // STYLING: JEAN MONET // FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS: LE MARCHÉ AUX FLEURS DU VILLAGE
THIS SUAVE AND CONTEMPORARY BACKYARD was a mundane patch of grass and concrete just one summer ago. “It was really a mess,” says Vic Bertrand bluntly. Bertrand, the president of full-service landscaping company Northstone, describes the area’s 2,000 square feet as an unappealing concrete patio and “just grass, weeds, shrubs.”
Homeowner Howard Codas says the family “usually hung out inside the house.” But they wanted better. “We love to entertain, to sit outdoors, cook outdoors, drink outdoors and have people over,” Howard says. “We enjoy our nighttimes as well, so we wanted something that was great
for nighttime entertaining, nighttime parties, nighttime barbecuing – all that type of stuff.” For that kind of life, the family needed an outdoor room. And Howard was certain of the style. “We’re pretty modern,” he says. “We like greys, whites, blacks.” He even knew that he wanted “stone that was not grainy or veiny.” •

The construction process was also hastened because Howard had previously had a plan drawn up that accommodated all the features he and his wife wanted. They had already bought a barbecue, and a fridge and freezer for the bar they envisioned. •
The bar and the cook station were fabricated by Mario de Cicco, of Contempo Design. They are treated with marine paint to withstand the elements.

The space that resulted from those three busy weeks in June is a multi-level outdoor room. Having various levels adds character to the landscape and breaks up sightlines, says Bertrand. It also helps to delineate distinct areas of activity. Closest to the house is the outdoor kitchen, incorporating the barbecue, and dining area.
“They understood what I was trying to do. And they were able to complete it fast because I wanted to enjoy my summer.”
A limited colour palette contributes to the sophisticated design of the backyard. “We utilize the space extremely well,” says the homeowner.

Between it and a lounge area that is centred around a firepit is the bar. The spa beyond the lounge area is used by the family year-round. Howard and family are now into their second summer enjoying their outdoor room. “We have people outside almost every night, drinking scotch or tequila or wine,
just sitting around,” says Howard. “We have the fire going if it’s cold, and we have electric infrared heat lamps also to keep us warm. Pretty much every night there’s someone there having drinks or cocktails or making a barbecue, and we use the hot tub a lot. It fits our lifestyle totally.” •

Most hold memories of important people and experiences in her early life. Born in Toronto, she grew up in England and has lived in Australia, New York and Los Angeles. She studied classical ballet and was an actress for a time. Among the treasures on display are some small Nigerian sculptures inherited from

The only thing about the home Hilary would change is the kitchen. The wood cabinetry, ordered as book-matched but delivered as not up to her exacting standards, still bothers her. “I love the kitchen,” says David Visentin, her co-host on the show for its entire eightyear run. “It may be my favourite room in the

HOW DO YOU OVERHAUL A PROPERTY’S LANDSCAPE when the house and pool already exist and you’re building on solid bedrock next to a cement wall? That was the challenge that the owner of a cliffside waterfront property in Lévis gave to landscape designer Maxime Desrosiers a few years ago. To handle it, Desrosiers focused on making the St. Lawrence River part of the property. “The primary goal behind this project was to highlight the view of the water,” says Desrosiers. “We wanted to integrate the water so much that the homeowner could have the impression of the river belonging to him.”

The homeowners have young children and often hold parties for people of many ages, so the deeply sloped 2,500-square-foot space had to include lots of hardscaping on two levels that connect seamlessly. A large crane enabled a team of three men to bring in heavy items, such as the stairs. They spent 1,500 hours building walls, setting fountains and laying down decking to make the six-foot drop between the house and the pool disappear. “The homeowners already knew us, so we had carte blanche for our design, but it took time to do right,” says Desrosiers. “We took an entire year to do the project.” •
“The primary goal behind this project was to highlight the view of the water.” Industria pavers are available in multiple sizes so that they can be used as decking, pool coping and edging.

Desrosiers’ initial design included two platforms of composite wood decking for the chairs and tables to mimic the house cladding. “This outline produces a shadow around the stone, deepening the seams for a very linear look that is true to contemporary design.” The landscape architect took building on a cliff with a cement wall in stride, but he says now that he struggled to integrate the home’s contemporary style with a kidney-shaped pool. “We had to exchange the pool canvas for a black one,” he says. “We also used a large black aluminum basin on which you can walk, to change the curve of the pool.”
The basin operates as part of a two-tiered water fountain into the pool. A black stand-alone fountain on the upper level duplicates the water theme set by the river, which is visible through clear glass panels on the fence. Frosted panels on the fence at the side of the property ensure privacy from nearby neighbours.
The view of the full backyard from the house offers multiple focal points, from the Quebec Bridge to the grassy play area.

Landscape designer Kal Lee Sterling, of Speshel K Design, worked closely with the homeowner in choosing window box plantings and the containers and plantings that adorn the deck.
WHEN ONE LEADS AN URBAN LIFE and has no country house, a city garden becomes important. The owners of this Westmount property have a moderately sized backyard (2,440 square feet) that had done yeoman service for years but was in need of an overhaul. The couple had bought a home on the flats near Westmount Park so their then-young boys
would have plenty of space to play close to home. The house’s backyard had the requisite patch of lawn (which did see plenty of activity by the boys), a deck, and flower beds meandering along the perimeter, but was otherwise unspectacular. One of the homeowners describes herself as an enthusiastic gardener. Originally from California, she says “I had to learn a whole new way
of gardening. For instance, what are considered annuals here can be perennials in California.” Besides dealing with a radically different climate, she also had less space to work with. She was able to indulge in a small way her love of gardening but it was not entirely satisfactory. She and her husband also found that the existing deck was high enough to create a sense •

What they have in common, she adds, is “their attention to quality and detail. They were really part of the process. The outcome was the result of good collaboration and high expectations.” When drawing up their wish list, one of the homeowners had expressed a desire for a brickpaved patio reminiscent of a Beacon Hill garden in Boston. Upon seeing a completed project featured
on RobitailleCurtis’s web site – a Philadelphia residential garden that used the desired brick and also had several other elements the couple liked, such as bluestone pavers – the choice was obvious. “My husband met Sophie in the morning, and we had decided by the evening to go with her,” says the homeowner. “We found her lovely, easy to work with. We clicked.”
Robitaille immediately concurred with the homeowners about the existing deck. “There was a lack of integration between deck, lawn and planting area,” she says. “I could tell that the homeowner enjoyed gardening, but within the planting area there was a lack of definition and opportunity to actually engage besides gardening. Because the difference in height

between deck and patio is not large, the front of the deck is deliberately left without a railing so that the two levels feel integrated. That sense is reinforced by the stairs between the two: the homeowner requested that the steps have a low rise and deep tread, making them inviting to use and softening the transition from deck to patio.
A little less than two feet below the patio is the garden, with bluestone outlining the demi-lune lawn, which is flanked by flower borders. Directly opposite the deck, at the lawn’s apex, a lounge area is paved in clay bricks and outlined by bluestone. In a sense, the backyard, with its geometric layout, has been landscaped in somewhat

The landscaping, carried out by contractor David DaRocha of L’Artisan Inc., makes use of many fruit trees and ornamental shrubs that the homeowner had planted over the years. Some were left in place, some carefully transplanted to more advantageous spots.
In one back corner of the garden, a fountain burbles softly in a small pond. “One day I looked out and there was a pregnant raccoon washing in the pond,” the homeowner says. She also points out the opposite back corner, where “the neighbours were kind enough to leave an opening in their cedar hedge so we could have a view of their pond.”
Although there are a few finishing touches to be done, the couple have enjoyed their new backyard since late last summer and are delighted with it. Paramount among its many charms is the “more gracious and gentle transition from house to garden,” says the homeowner. ART MONTREAL OUTDOORS 2016

The colourful lines in Mathieu Carrier’s abstract paintings come as no surprise given the way he experiences sound. “When I listen to music, especially jazz, I see – even taste – the colours of the notes,” he says. “I must have some degree of synesthesia and derive great pleasure from illustrating a tempo or a sound in my art.” Synesthesia is an unusual blending of the human senses that a minority of people experience. Their brains process sensory information differently so that they may experience a particular scent with every letter of the alphabet, for example, or – as in Carrier’s case – immediately visualize a colour upon hearing a certain sound. Nature figures in Carrier’s art but has to fight for space within urban settings. In Les vertiges humains, for instance, tree roots clamber through ever-narrowing gaps and cracks within a city’s vibrant streets. The remaining space depicted by whiteness doesn’t align perfectly because city life can be off kilter, even dizzying at times, regardless of the quality of urban planning. Drawing since early childhood, Carrier, who lives in Lévis, discovered acrylics in art classes during his last year of high school and has been passionate about painting with them ever since. “They’re like a liquid plastic and don’t lose their brilliance or smoothness once they’ve dried,” he says. “And they retain these qualities for a long time.” Carrier studied various artists and media in cegep and obtained a bachelor of arts degree from Université Laval, followed by a collegial teaching certificate. His favourite artists include Wassily Kandinsky, who created one of the world’s first wholly abstract paintings, as well as Piet Mondrian, whose non-representational form of horizontal and vertical lines was dubbed “neoplasticism,” which aptly describes Carrier’s work, too. •

“The abstract composition is most important to me,” Carrier says. “I’m always searching for the ideal balance or contrast between structure and free form, between the definitive lines or squares and where the ink must be allowed to flow as if casually strolling throughout the work.”
82

Living in Quebec, he is often inspired by autumnal colours, but urban elements tend to dominate. For instance, Carrier started out with a dark green base to reflect vegetation in Euphoria Avenue but ended up inking the lines darker to make the other colours more
vibrant. “It’s now more reflective of a city’s multicoloured lights, I think, although the linear aspects work like an urban forest whereby you feel the trees but on a subliminal level.” Carrier works directly on each canvas, starting out with a specific idea for every quadrant

Place has a defining role in Carrier’s art. He chose to create a “beauty pageant” series featuring Miss Ungava, Miss Pompeii and Miss Everest to coax the female muse who occupies each of these destinations to inform his work. “The series also speaks to Nature’s fertile elements, while

The bold colours reflect his masculine influences and thinking, while the cracks in the black ink show Carrier leaving his mark without always having kept his life perfectly together or knowing where it would flow. It’s his personalized example of an informed contrast between structure and free form. “I studied to be a college art teacher,” he says, “but decided I want as much as possible to live my life as an artist who’s primarily focused on my art and where it might take me.” Carrier’s work, represented by Galerie Le Luxart, opens the world to his unique interpretation. •

“The 12-millimetre glass provides security and durability without sacrificing views.”
“Most everyone is opting for larger windows in their new or renovated homes, but our solariums also provide a sturdy glass roof to fully enjoy the sun, stars, clouds, rain and even snow,” says Roger Lavoie, president of Zytco Solariums. “It’s also nice to be able to adjust our shades from the bottom upwards, according to how much outdoor light and privacy you want.” Lavoie hit on the idea of solariums 35 years ago after noticing how wonderfully a regular greenhouse expanded a U.S. home featured in a small brochure. “Of course, we need better insulation because of our winters, so I spent a few months learning about the best glass and aluminum products available and how they worked,” he says.
The initial solariums were designed by Lavoie with materials cut to specification in his cousin’s small workshop. “We completed five projects within the first six months and launched full-time in early 1982,” he says. “Now I have some 40 employees working at a large manufacturing facility, a showroom in Laval and one in Longueuil, as well as installers.” Lavoie insisted from the outset on triplelayered glass for extra insulation and durability. “And I’m always on the lookout for new and improved materials,” he adds. The result is lifelong customers. “Every year, we get at least three couples who bought a solarium from us 20 years ago,” Lavoie says. “And they
want another one for their new or downsized home because they enjoy that space so much.” He recently perused Google Earth to see how many Quebec properties have solariums. “In areas like Laval, it’s amazing; one in about every seven homes has one,” he says. “My goal is to have Zytco make all of the new or replaced ones.” Zytco sells classic and customized solariums, along with a suite of other products that includes glass railings for outdoor pools. “In Quebec, swimming pools must be fenced off from a home,” Lavoie says. “The 12-millimetre glass provides security and durability without sacrificing views.” Glass awnings have also become popular as more people seek ways to enjoy the outdoors without getting wet in the rain or exposed to excessive sun. “The solid roofing has built-in screens for shade that don’t have to be rolled up every night,” Lavoie says. “Our awning keeps outdoor furniture dry and even the barbecue free of snow during winter.” And while temperatures dip during the winter months, the sun continues to shine. A solarium allows homeowners to enjoy its sunny ways. •

MAXIMIZE SPACE IN A SMALL BATHROOM There are many ways to renovate a modest-sized bathroom to make it seem large YOU’RE CONSIDERING A BATHROOM RENOVATION but wonder if you have enough space for all the amenities you’d like to include in it. Do you scale back your wish list or is there a way that you can have it all in your modest space? Montreal Home asked Erin Brick, marketing manager at Fleurco, a company that manufactures showers and bathtubs, for her input on how to make the most of a small bathroom space.
Q: Erin, retrofitting a small bathroom space can be challenging for homeowners who might want such amenities as vanities, free-standing tubs, and showers. Is it possible to have all of them in the same modest space? A: Of course! There are various sizes of freestanding tubs on the market, and sizes under 60 inches fit into an existing alcove tub space. There are also many different and unique tub shapes available, from square to round; choosing a design that fits your space is very important. We also suggest using a corner shower door unit, which can be an excellent space-saving option. Another option is a seated base, which offers a regular shower unit that can be retrofitted into an existing tub space. For homeowners who have limited space in their bathrooms, the seat feature offers the option to sit and relax in the shower.
Q: What can homeowners do to make their small spaces seem larger? A: To make a small space seem larger, homeowners can choose the option of clear glass around the shower. This will make the space feel much more open. Q: Shower doors that swing outward can be a problem in small bathrooms. What is the answer? A: The solution is to opt for a sliding door or a bypass one. The sliding configuration has one sliding panel and one fixed panel. This allows entry from either the right side or the left side. The bypass configuration allows entry from both left and right sides. Another option is a shield or walk-in shower unit, which does not require any movement of the door. These shower doors eliminate the extra space needed for a swinging door.

Q: Is it possible to combine a shower and tub in the same fi xture? A: It is definitely possible to combine a shower and tub. An alcove-style tub allows homeowners to enjoy the tub for soaking while still giving the option of installing a tub door for an enclosed shower unit. Q: Storage space is always at a premium in small bathrooms. How can homeowners address this problem? A: There are shelves that can be added to your shower unit. These shelves allow for shower products to be stored within reach, eliminating clutter on the shower floor. On trend currently are small powder room vanities that offer storage while still fitting into tight or small spaces. •

THE OLD ADAGE ABOUT SMALL BEING BEAUTIFUL often resonates with people who downsize from large homes. Interior designer Jean Monet decided it was time to move to a small and beautiful home when he realized that the upkeep on his capacious two-storey house in Boucherville was demanding an inordinate amount of his time and energy. “The catalyst for downsizing was my elderly mother’s illness,” Jean says. “I don’t

have children, and as I was looking after my mother, I began to wonder who would care for me in my old age.” Negotiating stairs and taking care of his 37,000-square-foot garden – complete with swimming pool and fish pond – would become increasingly difficult, even overwhelming, he surmised. So in March of this year, Jean bought a bungalow in a new development in Longueuil that has allowed him to scale back his living space
to 2,300 square feet from 4,900. He redesigned the house and had it renovated to suit his lifestyle. And as a man who has a strong need to be surrounded by beauty and harmony, he affirms that “small is indeed beautiful.” The challenge he faced was a tight timeline for the renovation. “We had 15 days to completely transform the bungalow into my custom home,” Jean says. To do that, he engaged architectural

designer Nataly Houle and Entreprise de Construction Gonzalez (ECG Inc.), with whom he often collaborates on design projects. “I carefully chose my team and planned every last detail. I was on site day and night during the renovations. I think the key ingredient is to find the perfect contractor,” he says. Because the bungalow was built in 2008, only one minor structural change was needed, and most of the renovation was focused

on creating the aesthetic that Jean wanted. “The only structural change I made was to alter the laundry room, which had been open to the master bedroom’s closet,” he says. “I had a wall built to separate the two spaces; it turned the laundry room into a utilitarian space and created more room in the closet.” The house originally had three bedrooms. Jean transformed one of them into a formal dining room and the other into a home •

office/library. The electrical system was also changed to accommodate the addition of led lighting throughout the house. He also converted the second bathroom into a powder room. “As a designer, I’ve always said that the powder room is the most important room when you’re entertaining,” he says. “It should be incredible.” The inspiration for the powder room occurred at one point during the design process. “I awoke during the middle

of the night; I had had an outrageous vision and, the next morning, I called Nataly Houle to explain what I wanted. At first she wasn’t getting it, but eventually she understood.” Jean’s vision resulted in a set of custom-built, suspended acrylic shelves in the space once occupied by a bathtub. They’re used to display a collection of objets d’art. The other major transformation was the kitchen. Jean hired Cuisines Beaucage to •

Cuisines Beaucage built the Acrylux cabinets that are edged in stainless steel. One of the many elements that Jean loves in his new kitchen is the new-to-the-market Urban Cultivator, an undercounter unit designed for the indoor cultivation of fresh herbs. The counters are topped by glass that is manufactured to resemble marble and is sold at Ciot. Stainless steel hardware: Rocheleau.

create a functional and beautiful space. “The old kitchen had been poorly designed,” he says. “The stove door almost hit the island when it was opened, the storage space was limited, and the dark wood cabinets looked dated.” The first task was to banish the dark cabinetry. “The space had to be happy,” says Jean. “I was emerging from stormy days in my life and I wanted to return to sunny days.”
movatohome.com
The cabinets are white Acrylux, edged with stainless steel. “I wanted it to be ultramodern but I also wanted it to age gracefully,” Jean says. “The first concern was colour; I wanted the kitchen to be bright but not stark. In an open-plan house, the kitchen is the focus and it has to be the draw.” To prevent monotony, the cabinetry is in two colours: white on the bank of wall cupboards and a shade of
taupe on the island. And the backsplash of randomly patterned tiny round ceramic tiles is in both those tones. There are luxurious touches, too. The island is topped in a vitrified glass that resembles marble. The formal dining room is reserved for cool-weather dining. “In the summer, we eat outside or at the kitchen island,” Jean says. •

One room that Jean didn’t want in his new home was a formal living room. “People don’t use them anymore,” he says. The openplan floor layout connects the kitchen to a comfortable family room space, where the focal point is a gas fireplace flanked by builtin maple bookshelves that display statuary and sculptural artworks. Here, a sectional sofa and two armchairs are sensual invitations to relax and gaze upon the backyard garden through large picture windows.

The adjacent master bedroom also boasts large windows with a garden view. “I didn’t want the decor in the bedroom to be overpowering because the backyard is like a painting, a work of art through the windows,” he says. The whole house was designed to be an elegant backdrop for a vast collection of art. The little corridor space leading from the family room to the master bedroom is dedicated exclusively to the work of the late Quebec painter Bruno Côté; here, 14 of the
artist’s paintings are artfully hung. “I think Bruno Côté is one of the greatest painting talents we have in Quebec,” Jean says. One room that has become something of a sanctuary is the home office/library. “It’s located on the sunniest side of the house,” Jean says. “Because it’s so bright, I could afford to restrict the decor colours to black and white.” That includes a custom-built desk topped with Nero Assoluto granite. A wall of built-in shelves, topped by a collection

of Versace vases, holds a collection of art books. “I spend a lot of time in here,” Jean says. “Moving from a larger home, I realize that human beings are creatures of habit. We use the same space over and over again.” That habitual use is different in the new bungalow where every room is used to its maximum. “I have never been so happy in a home as I am here,” Jean says. “This is a happy place. I’ve closed one book and opened a new chapter in my life.” •

SURFACE SAVVY
Cosentino Surfaces offers vast range of stone, quartz and other products TO CALL COSENTINO’S Stanstead location simply a warehouse would be an understatement. It’s more like a destination for style-savvy Montrealers in search of natural stone, quartz, and other surfaces. The 50,000-square-foot venue is just one of 39 showroom and distribution facilities in the U.S. and Canada for this Spainbased company, which distributes its products in 70 countries. According to Jonathan Labbé, director of Cosentino Canada, there will soon be one more location. “A 4,000-square-foot Cosentino City Centre showroom is currently under construction in downtown Montreal,” he says. “It’s scheduled to open soon and will offer not just tiles but whole slabs also.”

“We like to think we provide a unique experience.”
Designers and architects have the inside track at Cosentino. “We offer training sessions and workshops for architects and designers,” Labbé says. “They can get this training either in their offices and showrooms or at the Stanstead Centre, and soon in downtown Montreal also.” But anyone, including builders and homeowners looking to install or upgrade, can find plenty of useful information at the Centre. Many arrive armed with only a cabinet sample and no idea of what would complement it. Staff members help them sift through hundreds of colour and product options and discuss the practical considerations that go into finding the perfect countertop for the kitchen or bathroom. Bonus: Cosentino stands behind its Silestone and Dekton products with a 25-year guarantee. With roots in the marble business, the 75-year-old company also enjoys a solid
reputation for innovation. Most people know Cosentino for its famous Silestone. Developed in the early 1990 s, this quartz surface now enhances countless high-quality kitchens and bathrooms. Among the latest colours for spring 2016 are terrazzo look-alikes – Ink and Aquatint – from the Etchings series. And currently popular is Suede, a texture option reminiscent of concrete but warmer to the eye and touch. The latest product is Dekton. It advances the technology by fusing porcelain, glass and quartz to create thin and highly durable slabs; the company’s manufacturing process mimics Nature’s process in an accelerated way. uv- and water-resistant Dekton slabs can be used for not only countertops and flooring inside the home, but also building facades and outdoor kitchens. Dekton is available in 38 colours. It’s virtually impossible to stain or
scratch, and heatproof enough for an ambitious cook to torch a crème brulée right on it. The company recently launched Dekton XGloss, a new line of ultra-polished, hightech, compact surfaces that boast a crystalline shine. In addition to having a highly reflective surface, XGloss is water-repellent and stain-resistant. The material is also available in various textures and patterns, from highly polished to leather-like natural looks, and those that imitate Calacatta marble, wood and concrete. Other Cosentino innovations include slabs of recycled materials and granite that withstand stains, and the Prexury Collection, a semi-precious stone line hand-made by expert craftsmen. For fans of contemporary or traditional style, Cosentino offers a wide choice of colours and textures to add panache to decor. •
