He became board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in internal medicine in 1978 and in cardiology in 1992.
Dr. Atkins is known for his research and teaching in small animal cardiology, having authored more than 150 publications. He is also the author of a multimedia interactive computer program in canine cardiology and numerous textbook chapters. In addition, he has spoken extensively in the United States, as well as in many countries around the world. • Managing Mitral Valve Disease 2019: ACVIM Consensus Recommendations - Clarke Atkins, DVM - 1 Hours CE Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim This presentation will review the newest therapeutic recommendations put forth in the 2019 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Consensus Statement on mitral valve disease (MVD) in dogs, after a brief overview of the pathophysiologic and therapeutic principles and ACVIM staging system. This discussion will include RAAS-suppressive therapy, inodilator therapy, diuretic therapy, and diet modification. In summation, an overview of treatment of asymptomatic and symptomatic MVD will be provided for each phase of cardiac disease. • Consult With a Cardiologist - Clarke Atkins, DVM - 1 Hour CE - Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Collaboration with a cardiologist can improve survival times, patient quality of life, and primary care revenue in patients with heart disease. When it comes to canine heart disease, getting a specific picture of your patients through an accurate history and thorough physical exam is essential. This session will focus on review of case studies provided by attendees. The format will be interactive rounds, during which the cardiologist will review case materials and offer interpretation and additional recommendations related to diagnosis and management. Evidence-based recommendations will be emphasized in combination with the cardiologist’s personal approach to practice. • Canine Heartworm Disease: Resistance and Beyond, 2020 - Clarke Atkins, DVM - 1 Hour CE - Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Taking an objective look at the data, this program will address the rise in reports of heartworm resistance to macrocyclic lactones, exploring the potential reasons behind this increase. The history and timing of changes in US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rules will be examined, along with the complexities surrounding lack of efficacy (LOE). Other topics that will be considered are LOE and resistance in the Mississippi Delta, whether resistance is real, and additional factors that may be involved. Recommendations for best veterinary practices will be given. • Systemic Hypertension in Cats - Clarke Atkins, DVM - 1 Hour CE - Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Early diagnosis and treatment of elevated blood pressure (BP) are essential for helping to minimize tissue damage in cats. This course introduces feline hypertension as it’s currently defined and explains the significance of the condition. Through a series of questions throughout the presentation, participants are asked how feline hypertension is perceived and treated in their own clinics. Patient signalment, prevalence, etiology, and signs of feline hypertension are reviewed. In addition, the effect of elevated BP on target organs is addressed. Ultimately, participants are challenged to rethink their perceptions of blood pressure, including how to diagnose high BP and when to treat feline patients. Treatment goals, including reducing BP, correcting underlying causes of elevated BP, sparing target organs, blunting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and sympathetic nervous system (SNS), and controlling heart rate, are examined. Management of hypertension is ultimately explored in depth, with study data used to highlight the effectiveness of various therapies. Dental Diagnostics: The use of oral endoscopy, radiography, and CT to diagnose and treat equine dental disease - Alison LaCarrubba, DVM - 1 Hour CE - MU CVM Oral endoscopy and dental radiographs, when performed correctly can be helpful to making a definitive diagnosis as well as ensuring resolution of disease or ensuring dental extraction is complete when performed. Nuclear scintigraphy can be used when diagnosing dental disease and is sensitive, although not specific. Computed Tomography (CT) can be very helpful in making a diagnosis of dental disease, as well as developing a plan for treatment. CT will allow for a 3-dimensional construct which aids in overall understanding of the pathology. Radiographs are critical to the diagnosis and treatment of many dental abnormalities and diseases. There are a variety of imaging techniques which are important to understand when considering diagnosis of equine dental disease. This presentation will focus on the common modalities utilized when diagnosing and treating dental disorders in the horse. Equine Dental Extractions - Alison LaCarrubba, DVM - 1 Hour CE - MU CVM Equine dental extractions can be time consuming and technically complicated. It is best to be set up for success with a good plan, an understanding of anatomy and excellent support staff. When considering equine dental extractions it is important to consider all aspects of the case to determine the safest course of treatment that will result in the best possible outcome. Typically, exodontia cases involve significant periodontal disease, an obviously loose tooth, an apical or periapical abscess, a fractured tooth, draining tract, sinus infection, difficulty chewing or abnormal behavior. The best means of extraction will be determined by the age of the horse, the animals behavior, the technical savvy and equipment of the veterinarian, and the specific dental abnormality. Jen Quammen, DVM By all “normal” appearances, as a Veterinarian, Jen Quammen was a successful veterinarian. After more than a decade as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, she went to Vet School and Graduated from Ohio State. Within just a few years of graduation, she was the Medical Director of a two location, seven doctor practice that she had formerly been a technician. During that time she also began training and competing in Kettlebell Sport Competitions. Feeling the pull of wanting to be more involved in the direction of Veterinary Medicine, she joined the Board of the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association and the Council on Veterinary Services. Still something was missing. She was content, but not satisfied. Happy, but not fulfilled. There was a constant nagging question of “next for me? What can I do to make more of an impact?”. Ironically, many of those surrounding her asked just the opposite questions. “Why can’t you just be satisfied? Why isn’t this enough?” That’s when a conversation with her partner, professional coach, Ryan Smith confirmed her feelings that she does have so much more to give to the profession. The Anxious Leader: Dealing with Anxiety - Ryan Smith & Jen Quammen - 1 Hour CE - Sponsored by Veterinarian Coaching Veterinary professionals are increasingly dealing with fear, anxiety, stress and trauma; and it keeps them from excelling to their best. In this session you will learn easy techniques to relieve anxiety. Building The Happiness Centered Business - Ryan Smith & Jen Quammen - 1 Hours CE - Sponsored by Veterinarian Coaching Having a happiness centered Veterinary business seems like a fairytale. What would happen to your business if you focused on the happiness of you and your staff? What if you went through your client list and referred out the most challenging clients? We will explore that and more in “Building The Happiness Centered Business. Ryan Smith Ryan Smith has spent a career working with High Performance individuals. Growing up in an entrepreneurial family, he found it difficult to follow the “get a good job, be happy, and build a retirement plan” that most follow. After ten plus years in the health and wellness industry as both an employee and an entrepreneur, he realized that one key piece that he was never taught during his Bachelors or Masters degrees was how to manage money or run a business. That’s when he entered the world of Wall Street, learning the ins and outs of trading stocks, options, and understanding the legal documents that come with business from large to small. After a decade of the financial grind, he went back to training clients, but now on a whole new level. Being able to speak the language continued next page
Soft Skills Continued of the wealthy and corporate executives set in motion a whole new type of training. Learning to take these driven, high performance individuals to the places they wanted to go too way more than being a “trainer”...he had to become a coach. Taking these successful and busy people to the finish line of Ironman, Marathons, and Ultramarathons was a whole different skill that he excelled at. The physical was the easy part, but coaching the recovery, mindset, work-life choices, while maintaining a high performance at work took a skillset few have developed. Along that path, Ryan became a Business Coach, Specialist in Mental Performance with a background in Neuro Linguistic Programming and Hypnosis. It was the ability to see things in people that they cannot that knew the Jen was destined for more.
