On the Cover... This issue’s cover takes us back to 1891 when the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association was founded. A different time. No four-wheel drive. No Vet Box. Just a veterinarian “making the rounds” to the next town or farm in driving snow. Times have changed and so has the need for the most up-to-date information to help veterinarians make the healing process faster and easier for the animals in their care. Since its first convention, the MVMA has offered not only the latest in veterinary medical education, but a chance for members to relax, make new friends, and renew old acquaintances. A time to “Keep Up” and “Kick Back”. This year’s convention will be held January 23-26. Inside this issue is the Registration Booklet with the information/registration forms you need. You can also register online at movmaconvention.org.

MVMA QUARTERLY - WINTER 2019

From the President-Elect It has been a pleasure to serve as your PresidentElect for 2019. One of the major jobs of the MVMA president-elect is to plan the upcoming convention. I want to personally invite each of you to attend the 2020 David Gourley DVM MVMA Convention in Columbia this January. The theme for this years convention is based around meeting with your colleagues and having a good time as well as gaining valuable CE. The keynote speaker is Bo Brock who brings a humorous message to events in our profession that we can all relate to. We have secured a fantastic group of speakers in all disciplines to provide real world continuing education that you can take home and use in your practice. We have assembled a panel to help answer some difficult questions around the use of cannabis in veterinary practice in our state. The convention committee and MVMA staff have worked very hard to make this a memorable event and one you don’t want to miss.

For first time attendees, students or individuals who just want to connect with colleagues we have implemented an ambassador program. Dr. Chip Kamelohr will be spearheading this group made up of past presidents who will be your ambassador to the convention. They will help you navigate the convention and introduce you to colleagues. The ambassadors will be around the front desk and will be identified on their badge. Please don’t hesitate to ask them for any assistance in connecting to the convention and association. We want you to attend and develop meaningful professional relationships with your peers.

there will also be open seating in a casual atmosphere. The event will be set up to be inviting to all and we encourage everyone to attend as this is an important time when we honor those deserving individuals that have represented the profession so well.

Thursday night we will have the popular mini topics. Friday night will be the Foundation Reception and Drawing which is always a great time to eat, drink, catch up with old friends and of course be generous with your hard earned money (Don’t forget to purchase your $10,000 drawing tickets). The awards ceremony will be on Saturday night with a new format. We will no longer have a formal dinner. There will be a cash bar and a food buffet. Reserved seating will be available for those who request it, but

Contact your classmates and have a reunion at the convention!

The convention could not be possible without our Partners for Progress and I encourage you to attend the exhibit hall and recognize those companies that sponsor our association and profession. I also ask you to thank the representatives of those companies that sponsor our association when they stop by your practices and to encourage their continued support.

Thank you for trusting me to serve as your president for 2020, and I hope to see you in January at the convention! David Gourley, DVM

In addition to his thriving veterinary practice and moonlighting as an author, Bo is an active public speaker and adjunct professor at Texas Tech University. He is also a columnist for “dvm360 Magazine” where he adds a little fresh humor to the serious field of veterinary medicine. Dr. Brock is the winner of the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award GOLD Winner in Humor for his book “Crowded in the Middle of Nowhere: Tales of Humor and Healing from Rural America”. Again this year, Saturday evening will feature a format to maximize exposure to the MVMA Awards presentation. Mid-Missouri Clinic and MVMA Animal Welfare Committee Donate Kits to Local Fire District

A Life Saving Idea: Donate Pet Oxygen Masks Dr. Ashley French, Weathered Rock Veterinary Clinic, and Julie Braun, Deputy Executive Director with the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association presented the Osage Fire Protection District (OFPD) with two Pet Oxygen Mask Kits on September 9. The presentation was held at OFPD Station No. 2 in Wardsville, Mo.

This Pet Oxygen Mask Project is an initiative taken on by Julie Braun (wife of OFPD Captain Jimmy Braun) and Weathered Rock Veterinary Clinic, in partnership with the MVMA Animal Welfare Committee. The goal of the statewide project is to equip all fire trucks in Missouri with a pet oxygen mask kit.

Weathered Rock Veterinary Clinic is a locally owned small-animal veterinary clinic in Jefferson City, Mo. “I am so happy that you are caring for the whole family which includes our family animal friends as well. We wanted to help the animal owners in our community by supporting the efforts of our fire and rescue professionals, so they will have the right tools to give our animals their best chance of survival, said Dr. French.

MVMA members are encouraged to go to www.movma.org for more information and consider donating mask kits to their local fire departments.

The pet oxygen masks are specifically designed for animals and each kit comes with three different size masks that can be used on any size dog or cat, as well as ferrets, guinea pigs, birds, and more. Equipping fire trucks with pet oxygen masks will give firefighters the proper equipment they need after rescuing a pet that has suffered from smoke inhalation.

From left to right: Dr. Melissa Boldan, Dr. Jessica Kolish, Dr. Ashley French, Chief Butch Braun, Assistant Chief Keith Buscher, Julie Braun, Lana Braun, Firefighter Kyle Renick, and Firefighter Austin Buscher.

We're thankful for the pets in our lives, and the vets that take care of them.

MVMA Board Approves Proposed Dues Increase

News Briefs

Boehringer Ingelheim donates 60,000 rabies vaccines to Puerto Rico. Residents of Puerto Rico will soon be better protected from rabies transmission. As part of its “Shots for Good” initiative, the company is donating 60,000 doses of its canine rabies vaccine to the territory over the next three years. “We’re pleased to do our part to help protect animals from rabies,” says Randolph Legg of Boehringer Ingelheim’s U.S. Animal Health Business. The donation, which coincides with World Rabies Day (Sept. 28), will be used by nonprofit organization Veterinarians for Puerto Rico to vaccinate animals in rural parts of the island. Merck Animal Health, as part of its ongoing commitment to advancing the practice of veterinary medicine, is pleased to announce $90,000 in scholarships have been awarded to 18 exemplary bovine veterinary students. The company presented each student with an American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Bovine Veterinary Student Recognition Award, as well as a $5,000 scholarship, at this year’s 2019 AABP Annual Conference, held in St. Louis, MO, September 12-14. Luiza Placheta of the Mu-College of Veterinary Medicine aws one of the recipients.

The MVMA Board’s policy on dues increases is as follows:

“Merck Animal Health is proud to honor these students with this important scholarship,” stated Justin Welsh, D.V.M., Executive Director of Livestock Technical Services, Merck Animal Health.

• The Board of Governors should always ensure association expenses are necessary and related to the MVMA’s mission and strategic plan.

Covetrus, a global leader in animal-health technology and services, announced that it has been named a preferred prescription management partner for National Veterinary Associates (NVA), one of the largest owner and operators of veterinary hospitals in the United States.

• If expenses justifiably rise, and other sources of income are satisfactorily exploited, the Board of Governors should consider proposing a dues increase at least every two years, of at least an average of 1.5% per year.

Serving as a preferred partner, NVA will endorse the Covetrus prescription management platform to their rapidly growing network of nearly 600 practices across the United States. “We have seen firsthand how using Covetrus’ prescription management platform can improve compliance and drive financial success,” said Erik Philipp, senior director of category management at NVA.

• This policy is intended to accurately reflect the association’s ongoing cost of doing business, to avoid crisis management, and to avoid the need for very large dues increases. It has been four years since a dues increase. In accordance with this policy, at its April meeting, the MVMA Executive Board approved a proposed dues increase of 3.5% which would be effective May, 2020. This proposal will be presented for approval January 25, 2020, at the General Membership Meeting, during the annual convention at the Holiday Inn Executive Center, Columbia, Mo. 10

Zoetis, the world’s leading animal health company, has announced that it will expand its portfolio of products and services for horses with the Stablelab® hand-held, point-of-care diagnostic blood test, which provides veterinarians critical information related to equine inflammation in 10 minutes. The Stablelab hand-held reader detects and quantifies the biomarker Serum Amyloid A (SAA), which is a major, acute phase protein produced by the liver that rapidly and dramatically increases in response to inflammation caused by infection. By measuring SAA, veterinarians can assess the severity of an infection sooner – often, before clinical symptoms start -- and are able to monitor the horse’s response over the course of treatment.

AAFP Releases Updated Zoonoses Guidelines The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) is hoping to combat misinformation that exists about cats and disease transmission through its updated Feline Zoonoses Guidelines. Appearing in the November issue of the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery (JFMS), the guidelines aim to provide accurate information about feline zoonotic diseases to owners, physicians, and veterinarians to allow logical decisions to be made concerning cat ownership. “These guidelines provide recommendations concerning the prevention of feline zoonoses, as well as the latest research and information on these diseases,” says Heather O’Steen, CEO of the AAFP. “Cats are wonderful pets, and with education, we can improve the health and welfare of cats as well as decrease any potential risks to their humans. This updated resource is another significant milestone in that direction.” The new guidelines focus on: • the enteric zoonoses; • scratch, bite, or exudate exposure zoonoses; • ocular and respiratory zoonoses; • urogenital tract zoonoses; • vector-borne zoonoses; and • lessening the risk of zoonotic transfer of disease from cats.

12

Reprinted from Veterinary Practice News

It also includes a client brochure titled, “What Can I Catch from my Cat,” to educate veterinary teams and cat owners about how zoonotic organisms are spread. Further, it provides examples of potential cat-associated zoonoses and discusses how to decrease risk of infection. A panel comprising veterinarians and physicians worked closely to align the guidelines with the One Health movement. The new guidelines are based on AAFP’s 2003 Feline Zoonosis Panel Report (catvets.com/ guidelines). In 2006, the association also published a panel report on feline bartonellosis. nce again this year, you can build your own program. The convention will offer an option to register for any day or days you want to attend, or register for the entire four-day event. You attend the days you want to attend. Due to this format, it is important to wear your name badge to all CE sessions, social events and the exhibit hall. Your name badge contains the days you are attending plus all meals you have purchased. See the registration forms on pages 8-9. This year’s convention welcomes Bo Brock, DVM for an enlightening presentation at the General Session on Saturday morning and lectures in the equine track throughout the day. Dr. Brock owns a thriving, multi-species veterinary clinic in Lamesa, Texas (population 9,207 and sometimes referred to as “the middle of nowhere”). He graduated magna cum laude from Texas A&M University and was voted equine practitioner of the year for the state of Texas in 2007. In addition to his thriving veterinary practice and moonlighting as an author, Bo is an active public speaker and adjunct professor at Texas Tech University. He is also a columnist for “dvm360 Magazine” where he adds a little fresh humor to the serious field of veterinary medicine. Dr. Bo Brock with client.

evening, join fellow MU-CVM students for a roundtable discussion with recent graduates. Valuable tips for navigating into your post-graduation veterinary careers. Register online at movmaconvention.com.

Over 60 Booths in the Exhibit Hall.... Your chance to view the

latest innovations in veterinary medicine and technology while renewing old friendships and making new ones. Don’t forget the Exhibit Hall Party at 4:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon before the Foundation Reception and $10,000 Drawing!

Buy a Student a Buffet Dinner. Sign up on the registration

form to buy an MU-CVM student a Saturday night buffet dinner. Tickets are only $25. Welcome a student and make them feel at home. It’ll make you feel good, too.

Katie Castle is our childcare specialist and has been in charge of our kids program for many years. Rest assured that your child will be in good hands with Katie.

There will be lots of fun for 4-12 year olds and the admission of $20 per child per night includes dinner. Please be sure to sign up on the registration form. Also, if your child or children will be attending, stop by the registration desk in the lobby upon arrival to sign in and complete the necessary paperwork.

MU-CVM Class of 2021 Holds Annual White Coat Ceremony (Edited from MU-CVM News)

The University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2021 celebrated the transition from classroom to clinics during the college’s annual White Coat Ceremony Oct 13. The event was held to mark the veterinary students’ successful completion of two years of study of basic veterinary sciences and their move into their clinical training. The first two years of preclinical training provided them with a foundation in biomedical sciences and included courses in anatomy, physiology, cell and molecular biology, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, virology and toxicology. They also learned fundamentals in clinical disciplines that they will need for the rest of their veterinary education including, anesthesiology, clinical pathology, radiology, public health and medicine and surgery. They will spend 19 months working in the Veterinary Health Center’s Small Animal, Food Animal and Equine hospitals and the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, as well as pursuing preceptorships in private practices and with public agencies on their way to completing their doctorate of veterinary medicine. The 115 members of the class selected a family member, friend or mentor to present and assist them into their laboratory coats. CVM Dean Carolyn Henry, DVM, MS, told the students that the Associate Dean for Student Affairs Angela entry-level practice Tennison, who served as the White Coat master of skills provided at ceremonies, introduced the platform party (from the CVM are second left): Dr. Carol Ryan, MVMA president, Richard Antweiler, MVMA executive director, Dr. Shuping to none, due to Zhang, Dr. David Wilson, Dr. John Dodam, CVM the length of time Dean Dr. Carolyn Henry, and Dr. Linda Berent, students spend in associate dean for Academic Affairs (not shown) clinical training. “Regardless of whether your work uniform remains a white coat, or becomes coveralls, scrubs, a military uniform, or business attire, it’s truly an exciting time to be a veterinarian.,” she said. “Our role in animal, human, and environmental health has never been more important than it is today and that role changes and expands every year. I encourage each of you to be ready to embrace change and the opportunities that change presents. Remember, every good thing that has ever happened in your life happened because something changed.” 32

St. Louis City Council Considering Proposed Ban on Cat Declawing Recently, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper contacted the MVMA concerning the proposed ban on declawing cats presently in front of the St. Louis City Council. The MVMA is taking guidance from the AVMA which strongly encourages client education. “Declawing remains a controversial topic in companion animal medicine. Declawing is a major surgery involving amputation and is not medically necessary for the cat in most cases. There are, however, some situations in which declawing may be considered, such as when a cat’s excessive or inappropriate scratching behavior causes risk of injury to immunocompromised people or remains destructive despite conscientious attention to behavioral modification and alternatives. The decision whether to declaw a cat should be made by the owners in consultation with their veterinarian. Veterinarians should provide complete education about the normal scratching behavior of cats, the procedure, and potential risks to the patient.” Below is an exerpt on the current AVMA policy developed by its Animal Welfare Committee: “The AVMA strongly encourages client education prior to consideration of onychectomy (declawing). It is the obligation of the veterinarian to provide cat owners with a complete education with regard to the normal scratching behavior of cats, the procedure itself, as well as potential risks to the patient. Onychectomy is an amputation and should be regarded as a major surgery. The decision to declaw a cat should be made by the owners in consultation with their veterinarian. Declawing of domestic cats should be considered only after attempts have been made to prevent the cat from using its claws destructively or when its clawing presents an above normal health risk for its owner(s).” Information for Pet Owners Scratching is a normal behavior of cats. It conditions the claws, serves as a visual and scent territorial marker, allows the cat to defend itself, and provides healthy muscle engagement through stretching. In many cases, a cat can be trained to scratch only appropriate surfaces. However, a cat’s excessive or inappropriate scratching behavior can become destructive or cause injury to people in the home. Punishment is not an effective deterrent to scratching. However, there are numerous training and management options that can help redirect scratching appropriately: • Providing appropriate scratching surfaces, such as dedicated posts and boards that are tall enough to encourage full stretching. What constitutes an attractive surface or location varies by cat, so don’t be afraid to get creative! • Scenting with catnip may help too. • Frequent nail trims - every 1 to 2 weeks • Nail caps - replaced every 4 to 6 weeks • Positive reinforcement training, beginning with kitten kindergarten if available • Pheromone sprays and/or plug-ins • Discourage use of inappropriate surfaces by attaching sticky tape or tinfoil

MVMF Board Approves Donations to Two Charities The Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation has approved donations to two worthy causes at their recent board meeting. The charities are: Ag On the Move and TREE House Therapeutic Riding Center. • Agriculture Education On the Move is a ten-week handson education program identifying key classroom objectives and state standards primarily in the areas of science, math, reading and writing. Students gain an understanding of today’s agriculture and farm families, through diverse learning experiences. • Founded in 1975 and formerly known as Therapeutic Horsemanship, TREE House is one of the oldest and most respected therapeutic riding centers in the United States. Programs serve clients from age 2 through adulthood who have physical, mental, emotional, social, and/or learning disabilities. Disabilities served include, but are not limited to, autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, mental and physical disabilities, traumatic brain injury, and more.

Building Client Relationships with the Animal Archives of Missouri Anyone who has lost a beloved family pet will find a memorial gift to be a comforting gesture. Veterinarians and their clinics can express their sympathy, say thank you, and build lasting client relationships through the simple but meaningful gesture of placing the departed pet in the Animal Archives of Missouri. The owners, their family, and friends can see the memorial from anywhere in the country on the Foundation’s Animal Archives website www.mopetmemorial.com A $10 donation from your clinic comforts clients, helps build your client/doctor relationship, and strengthens the human-animal bond.

MVMA QUARTERLY - WINTER 2019

MVMA’s Quality Assurance Program What Is the Missouri Stocker/Feeder Quality Assurance Program? The Missouri Stocker Feeder Quality Assurance Program is designed to meet the quality improvement and pre-conditioning needs of producers, feeders, and consumers. This program educates participants in immunology, animal well-being and the economics of disease. Participation in the program increases producer accountability for quality and safety of the product they sell.

How Does the Program Work? Veterinarians and producers must be certified. Veterinarians are certified by MVMA MSFQAP Committee members. Producers are certified by their veterinarian. Veterinarians and producers learn how they can influence carcass quality and consumer confidence by monitoring where and when injections are administered. Once certified, the producer may participate in the program at one of three levels (white, red or blue tag). The three-level approach allows all producers the opportunity to match their level of management and facilities to the level of participation.

Level 1: Show-Me Select (White Tag) • Participating veterinarians and producers must be certified. • Calves must be properly identified with an approved ear tag. Tag numbers will be listed on an approved certificate. • External and internal parasite control is adminis- tered. • Calves will be dehorned and healed. Calves will also be castrated with a knife and healed or verified to be steers. • Vaccinations: 7-way clostridial, IBR, BVD, PI3,

BRSV, Mannheimia haemolytica with leukotoxoid, (Histophilus is optional.) • Cattle must be born on the producer’s farm. A range of birthdates or the birthdate of the oldest calf in the group must be recorded. • Bull in and out dates will be provided. • Individual calf treatments will be recorded to include date, product, dosage, route of administra- tion and injection site. • Vaccinations must be given no younger than four months of age and at least 21 days before sale.

Level 2: Show-Me Superior (Red Tag) • Weaned 45 days before offering for sale. • Meet Level 1 requirements - NOTE: Initial vac- cinations may be given at an age determined by an attending veterinarian. • In addition, a second round of vaccinations must be given using the following guidelines: • A 7-way clostridial as well as a modified live vaccine containing IBR, PI3, BVD and BRSV must be administer- ed; • Histophilus somni is optional; • Only one dose of Manheimia heamolytica is required if that dose is administered to calves 5 months of age or older; • The time frame between initial and second vaccinations must be a minimum of 21 days and all vaccinations must be completed at least seven days prior to sale; • If a veterinarian determines initial vaccinations should be given to calves less than 4 months of age then second vaccinations must not occur until calves are 5 months of age or older.

Level 3: Show-Me Supreme (Blue Tag) • Meet Level 1 and Level 2 requirements. • All cattle must be tested and be negative for persistent BVD infection.

• Genetic information is optional.
