On the Cover...

Like most cats, our cover kitty knows how to soak up the last bit of warmth before the winter chill.

Warmth comes in many forms, and one of those is the friendship you’ll find at the upcoming MVMA convention.

It’s a great way to get out of the clinic, take a break, and meet up with old (and new) colleagues while receiving excellent continuing education in many forms including wet labs, workshops, and interactive discussions. It’s also a great employee benefit to send your staff to the convention.

Let’s not forget about the fun events like Friday night’s Foundation’s 25th Drawing and Silent Auction plus the Exhibit Hall Party and the fill-your-bucket Awards Ceremony on Saturday.

Hope to see you in January enjoying the warmth of fellowship at the 2025 MVMA Convention!

From the President

There is nothing like an election year to make you appreciate a group of people that are more united than divided.

Veterinarians are some of the most rational and considerate people I have ever been around. Through my time serving on the executive board, I’ve had the privilege of sitting in on many calls, meetings, and conversations concerning our profession, association, and our patients. Each time, the wellbeing of our entire profession- all Missouri veterinarians, and of course our patients

were at the forefront of the conversation and ultimately the decisions being made. There is always someone offering up the viewpoints of various facets of our profession and trying to ensure we are making the best possible decisions for all our members. What an honor it is to be a member of an organization and profession that can have open discussion and even disagreement and reach conclusions that serve the greater good, not simply personal agendas. I will step off my soapbox now.

I encourage each of you to find your seat at the table of organized veterinary medicine. The pathway that our organization paves moving forward is

From the Secretary-Treasurer

Do Animals Go to Heaven?

As most of you know, I was out of practice for a time when I was teaching full time and taking care of elderly parents. But now that I have “retired”, I am back in practice at a small animal clinic. We all know that a part, not a happy part, mind you, is when we have to attend the end of life of a beloved pet. I have always told individuals interested in veterinary medicine that practice is not all “cute puppies and kittens”; there are those days that we get dirty, bloodied and in general, beat up, sometimes physically, and many times emotionally. I recall a day in the clinic, not too long ago, the first appointment of the day were two, very cute, 8 week old puppies (still had puppy breath) for their first vet

visit. A great way to start the day. But the last appointment of that day was one of “those appointments”. The patient, an old dog, had numerous tumors and it was time. Her veins were so fragile, I couldn’t get a good catheter, so I used injectable anesthetics prior to the final injection. As we were waiting for her to become anesthetized, this dog looked up at me, held my gaze for several moments as if to say a thank you. Was it her soul I saw in those dark brown eyes? I will never know, but in that moment, there was a connection that rocked me to the core. That evening, I communicated with friends that I had presided over 3 such events that same day. One of them supportively said, ‘thank you for being there for those patients and their owners’. It made me realize just how important we are, not only in our patients’ lives, but in our clients’ lives.

only as good as we, the members, make it. MVMA needs your thoughts and ideas, your help, your perspective and experience-we need you.

I hope this fall finds all of you happy and healthy, as busy as you wish to be, and enjoying cooler weather.

Kacie Ulhorn, DVM

So do animals go to heaven? I can’t answer that, but I feel privileged to watch over my patients’ lives from birth to death. I am proud to be a veterinarian and I hope that you are as well even on those hard days. We have to remember there will be those puppy and kitten moments in the future when we attend those end of life events. So, we’ll see you in January in Columbia to learn even more for our great profession.

Sincerely,

Kacie Ulhorn, DVM

Members Make New Friends at the Fair!

It was a great time at the fair with MVMA members making new friends with lots of questions (and stories) at the association’s booth during the Missouri State Fair, August 8-18 in Sedalia, Mo.

Over 30 members donated a day of their time reaching out to the public with information about the MVMA, answers to questions about pets, and good conversation.

Our volunteers were kept quite busy throughout the event visiting with fair-goers and spreading the word about good health care for their animals and encouraging children that they can be a veterinarian, too. Again this year, the booth offered the “Future Veterinarian” photo backdrop where fairgoers could take a memory home with them. This year, the MVMA combined its booth with the MU College of Veterinary Medicine. Thank you to MU CVM students, Grace McIntosh and Iyuana Morris for their help

Volunteers greeted booth visitors, answered a myriad of questions, and handed out bookmarks, coloring pages, brochures on MVMA programs, and information on pet health and welfare. Emphasis was also made on the MVMA’s Missouri Stocker/Feeder Quality Assurance Programs and the Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation’s Animal Archives of Missouri and Veterinary Museum.

A big thanks goes to these MVMA volunteer State Fair Ambassadors...

Drs. Dennis Weaver, Burton Schauf, M. Bill Jones, Jenny Lindquist, Lynne Keyes, Steve Nickell, Clark Fobian, Stephanie Schlotzhauer & “Imber” (Golden Retreiver), Sarah Reinkemeyer, Tom Rose, Shelia Taylor, Erica Nowlin, Philip Falch, Anna Bruening, Lynn Martin, Linda Hickam, Larry Forgey, Chuck Barry, Ben Potter, Bob Graves, Susan Sczepanski & “Barclay” (Lab), Cliff Miller, Cindy Vedder, Ken Vroman, Taylor Woods, Haley Bauer, Kayla Sadler, Roy Davis & “Molly” (Aussie), Michael Pfander & “Ramsey” (Native American Indian Dog), Sally Burd and Keith Placke.

A great big thank you to all of our members who helped this year.

Think about joining us at next year’s fair, August 7-17, 2025

Honoring the Life of Dr. Robert “Bud” Hertzog

The Missouri Veterinary Medical Association would like to honor the life of Dr. Robert “Bud” Hertzog. He passed away on July 15, 2024 in his hometown of Lee’s Summit, Mo. at the age of 92. Dr. Hertzog was a lifetime member and dear friend to the association, as well as, a staunch advocate for the veterinary profession. He will be missed. Bud graduated from the University of MO Columbia with a BS in Agriculture in 1952 and a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1956. After college, he joined the Lee’s Summit Animal Hospital as an Associate. He later purchased the practice and continued to work there until his death, for a total of 68 years.

Incoming Veterinary Students Gather for V.E.T. Orientation

MU CVM hosted their Veterinary Enrichment Training (V.E.T) orientation event on August 12th at the Level Up Entertainment venue and Adams Conference Center in Columbia, Mo. This event gives incoming MU CVM veterinary students the opportunity to build friendships with their classmates, meet faculty, staff, and MVMA members and have some fun along the way.

MVMA Executive Director Julie Braun and MVMA members, Drs. Kacie Ulhorn, Shelia Taylor, Laura Moon, Kenton Morgan, Melissa Bolden and Lynn Martin spoke to the students during the MVMA-sponsored meal that evening to introduce them to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association. We are hoping these students have a great year and encourage them to join the MVMA!

He was a past President of the KCVMA, and the MVMA. He was on the Executive Board of the AVMA where he was Board Chairman from 2005-2006. He was also named Veterinarian of the Year by the MVMA. He is also the namesake of the Dr. Robert E. Hertzog Leadership Award presented to him by the MVMA in 2007. He was past Chairman of the State Veterinary Medical Licensing Board, which he served two terms and also served as the Licensing Board’s Chairman. He was a charter member of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, served as a Director and Chairman of the Board of Professional Veterinary Products, and was a member of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, and the American Association of Equine Practitioners. In 2010 he received the Alumnus of the Year Award from the University of MO College of Agriculture. He promoted the MU College of Veterinary Medicine at the Missouri State Fair for many years. He was the veterinarian for the Kansas City Zoo for 20 years, and the American Royal for 51 years.

He was also heavily involved in his local community. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Lee’s Summit for 81 years. He was one of the original charter members of the Lee’s Summit Rotary Club, and served on the Jackson County Legislature for 16 years. He also was a member of the Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council, Lee’s Summit Education Foundation, and Jackson County Economic Development Commission and was Trustee of the MO 4-H Foundation.

Few in Lee’s Summit were as respected as he was. He continuously shared his time and talents with the schools and the community. He was known as one of the most influential individuals in Lee’s Summit while remaining a very humble and kind gentleman. He did not hesitate to help others.

MU-CVM students gather for a round-table talk with MVMA members about the highlights and issues of the veterinary profession.
Julie Braun, MVMA Executive Director, and Dr. Kacie Ulhorn, MVMA President, discuss the various benefits of MVMA membership.

Comparing Missouri Veterinarians Quality of Life in 2021 vs. 2023

Quality of Life Survey

The MVMA and Rural Animal Veterinary Task Force has put together a Quality-of-Life survey comparison that was sent out to our full membership. The goal of this survey was to see if our Missouri veterinarians were still satisfied with the veterinary industry and their career choice, before and after the pandemic.

For complete survey results, go to: https://www.movma.org/page/QualityofLifeSurvey.

Our findings show that even though income satisfaction was not quite as high for rural veterinarians and the hours worked per week were higher than their urban and suburban counterparts, the overall job satisfaction and career satisfaction was highest among food animal exclusive and mixed animal practitioners.

Respondents geographic locations:

In 2021, 347 veterinarians took our Quality of Life survey. 155 people said they lived in a suburban area, 138 live in a rural area, and 8 people marked “other”.

In 2023, 146 veterinarians took our Quality of Life survey. 72 people said they lived in a suburban area, 50 live in a rural area, and 5 people marked “other”.

How satisfied are you with your life outside of work? If you could go back and start your career over, would you choose:

Wellbeing Static-clings Sent to Clinics

You Are Not Alone

Five years ago, the MVMA Wellbeing Task Force developed an in-clinic fast reference aid for all staff members to remind everyone that we are not alone. These magnets were seen all over the state on break room refrigerators. The task force has updated the information and designed a static-cling so they can be placed just about anywhere. Bathroom mirrors, clinic fridge, cabinet doors, kennel rooms, desktops, and anywhere else you feel would be an optimum location for your team.

The new information includes:

• Call or Text 988 – National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

• Lifeboat - www.Lifeboat.nomv.org Lifeboat by NOMV

(Not One More Vet) is an online peer-to-peer support and mentorship in the veterinary community. Lifeboat is not a mental health intervention, but rather a peer support space to discuss mental health and wellness issues.

• Crisis Text Line – Text HOME to 741741

Simple changes in our clinics may well save a life. While this alone is not a cure: it may offer someone in darkness enough pause to reach out for help. These were sent to clinics in June. If you did not receive one, call the office at 573-636-8612.

Licensing Board to Increase Fees

I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the fee changes that will be in effect at the time of license renewal on November 30, 2024. Veterinarians, veterinary technicians and veterinary facilities annual renewal fees will increase by $10. Veterinarians that renew their license will pay a $60 renewal fee for an active license and $35 for an inactive license. Veterinary Technicians that renew their registration will pay a $30 renewal fee and $20 for an inactive registration. Veterinary Facilities will pay a $35 renewal fee. Licensees that renew late will see an increase in the penalty fee as well. The late renewal penalty fees will increase to $200 for Veterinarians, $100 for Veterinary Technicians and $100 for Veterinary Facilities. The notification must be submitted in writing to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board and contain a copy of the appropriate document indicating the change. A $15.00 name change fee made payable to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board must accompany the letter. The current license/registration must be returned which bears the former name.

EMPLOYMENT CHANGES – All licensees/registrants are required to notify the Board of any changes to employment. Veterinarians may submit the notifications by email to vets@pr.mo.gov. Veterinary technicians must complete and submit a Verification of Employment form (https://pr.mo.gov/boards/veterinary/375-0265.pdf).

DUPLICATE LICENSE – Licensee can be issued a duplicate annual renewal license by submitting a written request for a duplicate license to the Board by e-mail to vets@pr.mo.gov.

If an email address has not been provided, the renewal is mailed to the most current address on file with the Board. Renewals are mailed to all current veterinary technicians on or around September 1 of each year. The renewal license is valid for 1 year and expires on November 30th of each year. Licensees are required to obtain continuing education each year. The reporting period begins on December 1st and ends on November 30th of the following year.

Funding Appropriated for Missouri Technician Schools

With a surplus of funds in the state budget this year, MVMA successfully advocated funding for publicly funded AVMA accredited technician schools in the state of Missouri. MU-CVM in Need of Volunteers for Screening Out-of-State Applicants for Admission

MU CVM is once again seeking volunteers to help with screening out-of-state applications for admissions. Volunteers will be placed into “teams” to review around 45 applications. This process will take place from October to November. There will be an approximately onehour training session, then you will work on your own to review assigned applications. Finally, you will have meeting either in person or via Zoom with your teammates (one current veterinary student and one faculty member) to determine a mutually agreeable list of applicants to be granted a live interview for further consideration for admission. Click below to volunteer, or contact Dr. Leah Cohn (cohnl@missouri.edu) if you have additional questions. We so appreciate your effort to make sure we continue to train the next group of outstanding MU CVM DVMs! MVMA’s Quality Assurance Program

What Is the Missouri Stocker/Feeder Quality Assurance Program?

The Missouri Stocker Feeder Quality Assurance Program is designed to meet the quality improvement and pre-conditioning needs of producers, feeders, and consumers. This program educates participants in immunology, animal well-being and the economics of disease. Participation in the program increases producer accountability for quality and safety of the product they sell.

How Does the Program Work?

Veterinarians and producers must be MSFQAP-certified. Veterinarians must also be Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certified. Veterinarians are certified online or during the MVMA convention. Producers are certified by their veterinarian. Veterinarians and producers learn how they can influence carcass quality and consumer confidence by monitoring where and when injections are administered. Once certified, the producer may participate in the program at one of three levels (white, red or blue tag). The three-level approach allows all producers the opportunity to match their level of management and facilities to the level of participation.

Level 1: Show-Me Select (White Tag)

• Participating veterinarians and producers must be certified.

• Calves must be properly identified with an approved ear tag. Tag numbers will be listed on an approved certificate.

• External and internal parasite control is administered.

• Calves will be dehorned and healed. Calves will also be castrated with a knife and healed or verified to be steers.

• Vaccinations: 7-way clostridial, IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, Mannheimia haemolytica with leukotoxoid, (Histophilus is optional.)

• Cattle must be born on the producer’s farm. A range of birthdates or the birthdate of the oldest calf in the group must be recorded.

• Bull in and out dates will be provided.

• Individual calf treatments will be recorded to include date, product, dosage, route of administration and injection site.

• Vaccinations must be given no younger than four months of age and at least 21 days before sale.

Level 2: Show-Me Superior (Red Tag)

• Weaned 45 days before offering for sale.

• Meet Level 1 requirements - NOTE: Initial vaccinations may be given at an age determined by an attending veterinarian.

• In addition, a second round of vaccinations must be given using the following guidelines:

• A 7-way clostridial as well as a modified live vaccine containing IBR, PI3, BVD and BRSV must be administered;

• Histophilus somni is optional;

• Only one dose of Manheimia heamolytica is required if that dose is administered to calves 5 months of age or older;

• The time frame between initial and second vaccinations must be a minimum of 21 days and all vaccinations must be completed at least seven days prior to sale;

• If a veterinarian determines initial vaccinations should be given to calves less than 4 months of age then second vaccinations must not occur until calves are 5 months of age or older.

Level 3: Show-Me Supreme (Blue Tag)

• Meet Level 1 and Level 2 requirements.

• All cattle must be tested and be negative for persistent BVD infection.

• Genetic information is optional.

Veterinary Honor Roll Inducts Two New Members

The Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation (MVMF) has announced the induction for two new members into the Veterinary Honor Roll of Missouri.

On August 10, 2024, a ceremony was held at the Foundation’s Museum in Jefferson City, Mo. to honor Bruce Addison and Dr. Dennis Schmitt.

Bruce Addison, is one of two non-veterinarians that the Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation (MVMF) Board has unanimously voted to be inducted into the MVMF Veterinary Honor Roll.

Bill Fales, PhD was first inducted into the Veterinary Honor Roll in 2016.

Mr. Addison enrolled in the PhD program in veterinary microbiology at the MU-CVM. In 1975, he began his own company dealing with veterinary microbiology, diagnostics, vaccine development, and consulting where he continues as president of Addison Biological Laboratories.

“I wake up every day wondering what can I do to help animals today?” – Bruce Addison

Dr. Dennis Schmitt, is a semi-retired practitioner offering elephant and antelope reproductive consulting services.

He is a 1978 graduate of the MU-College of Veterinary Medicine, Columbia, Mo.

Dr. Schmitt began practicing in Republic, Mo. providing reproductive services for dairy and beef cattle including embryo transfer. From 19832000, he was a veterinarian and research director for Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Mo.

He joined Missouri State University in 1996 and retired in 2014. He was the Director of Veterinary Care and Research from 2004-2016 for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. This is just a small glimpse into the extensive contribution that Dr. Schmitt has made to the profession.
