On the Cover... Did you know that cats share 95.6% of their genetic makeup with tigers? Did you also know that there will be plenty of “Tigers” (MU that is) at the upcoming annual convention held January 27-30, 2022. This year’s meeting will feature the best of in-person educational seminars in all fields of veterinary medicine along with friendship and fun with your peers. Last year was difficult for all of us and the MVMA is very happy to “Welcome Back” our members to an in-person event as we move forward into a new year.
MVMA QUARTERLY - WINTER 2021
From the President-Elect Hello everyone and greetings from the MVMA Executive Board. I have enjoyed my year as President-Elect and am ready to assume Edward Migneco, DVM my role as President for the upcoming year. This has been a challenging couple of years for all of us and your Executive Board has worked hard to ensure all of you get the support you need, and to maintain our goal of representing the veterinary professionals in our state. I, along with the convention planning committee and our great staff at the MVMA office, have been working hard on the upcoming 2022 Convention. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we plan on being “Live”

again in Columbia in January 2022 with the great CE opportunities and events we’ve all been missing! A prerecorded, on-demand option will be available March 2022 in our ONline CE platform for members to watch on your own schedule. We hope most of you will consider coming in person so we can renew our friendships and camaraderie. The theme for the 2022 convention is “Welcome Back to Moving Forward”. We want it to be a combination of welcoming everyone back together while addressing the current situation we are all facing in these challenging times. There will be great CE as I said, and all the live events we have come to expect, like the MVMF Fundraiser with silent and live auctions, $10,000 ticket raffle, and

MVMA Board Approves Proposed Dues Increase Effective May 2022 The MVMA Board’s policy on dues increases is as follows:
The Board of Governors should always ensure association expenses are necessary and related to the MVMA’s mission and strategic plan.
If expenses justifiably rise, and other sources of income are satisfactorily exploited, the Board of Governors should consider proposing a dues increase at least every two years, of at least an average of 1.5% per year.
This policy is intended to accurately reflect the association’s ongoing cost of doing business, to avoid crisis management, and to avoid the need for very large dues increases.
It has been 2 years since a dues increase. In accordance with this policy, at its September meeting, the MVMA Executive Board approved a proposed dues increase of 3% which would be effective May 2022. This proposal will be presented for approval Saturday, January 29, 2022, at the General Membership Meeting, during the annual convention at the Holiday Inn Executive Center, Columbia, Mo.. 8

Congratulations to the Class of 2023!
MU-CVM Students Move From Classroom to Clinics Article by Tracey Berry with photos by Karen Clifford, MU-CVM
The University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine held its annual White Coat Ceremony on Oct. 17 to celebrate the Class of 2023’s transition from classroom to clinics. The event marked the veterinary students’ successful advancement into the clinical portion of their training. “They are closer to the end than they are to the beginning of their four years of professional training,” Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs Angela Tennison, DVM, told the crowd of well-wishers gathered in Jesse Auditorium on the MU campus. The 119 members of the class will spend the next 19 months working in the Veterinary Health Center’s Equine, Food Animal and Small Animal Equine hospitals, the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, and in private practices and public agencies where they will undertake preceptorships on their way to completing their doctor of veterinary medicine degree. The first two years of preclinical training provided them with a foundation in biomedical sciences and included courses in anatomy, physiology, cell and molecular biology, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, virology and toxicology. They also learned fundamentals in clinical disciplines that they will need for the rest of their veterinary education including anesthesiology, clinical pathology, radiology, public health and medicine and surgery. For the ceremony, students selected a family member, friend or mentor to present and assist them into their laboratory coats as they crossed the auditorium stage. Marcy Hammerle, DVM, president of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, and Julie Braun, MVMA executive director,

presented each student with a lapel pin and a name badge that were provided by the MVMA and Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation. CVM Dean Carolyn Henry, DVM, MS, commended the group for their resilience in pursuing their studies during the pandemic. Julie Braun, Missouri Veterinary Medical Association executive director (left), and Marcy Hammerle, DVM, president of the MVMA, present Nathan Zerwig with a lapel pin and name plate and congratulate his mother, Cherie Zerwig.
“Who could have imagined how our world would change in the months after you began your professional curriculum? You were called upon to adapt to a completely unexpected set of circumstances,” she said, “You had to adjust to new ways of learning while your instructors simultaneously worked to transform our teaching models.” John Dodam, DVM, MS, PhD, chairman of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, welcomed the students across the parking lot to begin work in the Veterinary Health Center and Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. He told the cohort that while they may have taken their last final exam, they still had tests in their future, many of which would be administered by worried clients.

Tax news from Stopp & VanHoy...The Biden administration has proposed an $80 billion increase to IRS funding over the next ten years which would increase the IRS budget by 10%. The additional funding will allow the IRS to increase it’s enforcement staff by approximately 15% per year. Learn more about how you can reduce your chances of an IRS audit by downloading our guide at https:// stoppvanhoy.com/resources/e-books/5-tips-for-avoiding-an-irs-audit Trupanion, the leader in medical insurance for pets, has partnered with Not One More Vet (NOMV) in their efforts to raise awareness of the often unseen challenges faced by veterinary professionals. NOMV is a non-profit organization whose mission is to transform the status of mental wellness within the profession so veterinary professionals can survive and thrive through education, resources, and support.
Left to right: Dr. Roger Dozier, Ms. Brette Henderson, Representative Kent Haden, Dr. Mel Falk, and Mr. Richard Antweiler.
NOMV was founded in 2014, following the suicide of the world renowned veterinarian, Dr. Sophia Yin. In the days following her death, there were news reports that veterinarians are at an increased risk for suicide. NOMV was started as a private Facebook group among veterinary professionals and over the past 7-years its Facebook forum membership has grown to exceed 30,000 veterinary professionals worldwide. Trupanion donated $250 to be shared equally by the organizations for every new hospital that downloads Trupanion’s payment solution software when initiated by the TruCuddle campaign. The campaign ran from June 18 through October 23. Boehringer Ingelheim, a global leader in animal health, is proud to announce that its Aservo® EquiHaler® received a 2021 Pharmapack Health Product Award in the newly established Animal Health category. The Health Product Awards also include Patient-centric Design and Eco Design categories. In 2020, the product received a Red Dot Award for outstanding product design. Aservo® EquiHaler® is an inhalant therapy licensed for use in horses with severe equine asthma. “What makes our Aservo® EquiHaler® stand out is the ergonomic handle and dosing lever for ease of use handling and the nostril adaptor that fits gently inside the horse’s nostril, allowing for easy inhalation of the medicated mist,” explains Martin Folger, Principal Fellow Expert & Risk Management, Global Innovation, Boehringer Ingelheim. “We submitted this product because it is an industry first in equine medicine; until now, there was no approved inhalant therapy licensed for use in horses with severe equine asthma.”

Our membership runs from June 1-May 31 of each year. Please encourage your veterinary technicians to become members of their state association! If you are a hospital manager and are interested in membership for all of your technical staff we do offer group memberships. Please find more information at https://movta. org/login/group-memberships or email us at memberships@movta.org with any questions. You can also find us on Facebook at @MoVetTechAssoc. We are always looking for energetic veterinary technicians to serve within our organization. Please encourage your vet techs to become involved today!
Tech Notes from the MoVTA MoVTA would like to congratulate the winner of the 2021 Veterinary Technician Student Scholarship, Mary McFillen! Mary is currently a student of Penn Foster’s Veterinary Technology program, and is a veterinary assistant at the University of Missouri VHC. Congrats, Mary! MoVTA awards a student scholarship once per year. Students must be MoVTA members to be eligible to apply, and student membership is free! On October 21, 2021, Dr. Marcy Hammerle, MVMA President and Veterinary Technician & Practice Staff (VTPS) Committee Chair, Mrs. Stephanie Gilliam, RVTg, MoVTA Legislative Chair, and Mrs. Julie Braun, MVMA Executive Director, met with the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board to discuss ideas of improving veterinary technician utilization. The meeting went well, and MVMA President, Dr. Marcy Hammerle, has created a veterinary technician task force to work on a specific set of objectives addressing technician utilization. MoVTA executive board members will be working with the MVMA on this taskforce, and we are excited to get to work on this. Stay tuned for updates! 32

MVMA QUARTERLY - WINTER 2021
QUICK TIP
With labor costs increasing, how do I keep my profit up? We know there is a shortage of veterinarians across the country. Nearly every client we have is looking to hire at least one doctor if not more. Some clients are also starting to see the hiring challenges drift into the rest of the support staff. I foresee these challenges getting worse before they get better. Basic economics tell us that when demand exceeds supply, prices increase. The demand for hiring doctors and staff is high while supply is low which correlates to employees demanding higher compensation. We are seeing some impressive compensation packages. The demand for veterinary services is also very high which should correlate to hospitals increasing their fees. When your labor costs are increasing due to short supply, this is also a reason for you to increase your fees. Increasing fees is the only way you are going to be able to grow revenue and generate a profit, especially if you cannot see any more patients because your schedules are full. When is the last time you increased your fees? Do you keep track of your average invoice charge? You should! Donʼt be afraid of a 10% fee increase! If I go to the dentist one year and my bill is $100 then I go back the next year for the same service and my bill is now $110, I donʼt even notice. Most people wonʼt. This is a 10% increase. Go for it! You are going to need to in order to remain profitable. Sure, you may lose some of your lower tier clients due to a fee increase. Would this be all that bad when you are overcapacity? Wouldnʼt you rather have more time to spend on your higher tier clients anyway? When we complete valuations for our clients, we coach them on how their expenses are lining up with industry benchmarks and point out areas of opportunity. This includes labor costs. Give us a call if youʼd like us to coach you too!

MVMA QUARTERLY - WINTER 2021
After a two-year hiatus, the MVMA Equine Dental Seminar is back.
MVMA Hosts Equine Dental Seminar It was a busy weekend for 16 veterinarians who attended the MVMA Equine Committee’s Fall Equine Dental Seminar. The course was held September 10-12, 2021 at the Missouri Humane Society’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and offered 18.5 hours of state licensing board-approved continuing education. The seminar attracted attendees from as far away as Alaska. The lecture was sponsored by PowerFloat, Inc., Zoetis Animal Health and the MVMA. The course covered oral cavity anatomy/physiology; dental instruments and techniques; sedation techniques; dental pathology and treatment; and a hands-on dental wet lab utilizing rescued horses at the Humane Society’s farm. Veterinarian attendees performed various dental treatments at no charge on 37 of the ranch’s horses waiting for adoption. The dollar value of these services is estimated at over $7,400.
A job well done! Instructors, attendees and Longmeadow Rescue Ranch staff gather for a photo after the seminar.
The expertise of these veterinarians underscores the need to involve a licensed veterinarian in equine dental care. Equine dentistry practiced without the involvement of a veterinarian is illegal and unauthorized without oversight by any state entity. The presenters at the lecture were Dr. Dennis Rach and Dr. Bruce Whittle. Dr. Rach is a former member of Moore & Co. Veterinary Services, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He continues to practice on a part-time basis and develop new modalities for equine dentistry. Dr. Bruce Whittle is a predominantly large animal veterinarian and co-owner of a mixed animal practice with his wife, Gayla, in Trenton, Missouri. He has a passion for dentistry and has been actively involved in teaching dentistry short courses at numerous veterinary colleges through the AAEP over the past 10 years. During Saturday evening’s dinner, an award plaque was presented to Dr. Rach for his 10 years of service to the dental seminar as an instructor. Dr. Whittle used his woodworking skills to construct the plaque made from Missouri walnut.
Left: Dr. Cody Secrest (left) makes adjustments with the help of Dr. Dawn Mrad, Longmeadow’s attending veterinarian. Center: Dr. Bruce Whittle (left) with Dr. Dennis Rach during the award presentation. Right: Dr. Dennis Rach (right) assists Dr. Annette Llanes who made the trip from Fairbanks, Alaska. 34

Hill’s and AVMF Team Up to Support Disaster Relief The American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) is funding disaster relief for people and animals impacted by Hurricane Ida, thanks to gifts from Hill’s Pet Nutrition, the AVMF and individual donors. Hill’s donated $10,000 to the AVMF to support disaster relief work by the Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART), and the gift is being matched by an equal amount from the AVMF’s disaster funds for a total of $20,000. In addition to funding relief work by organizations such as LSART, the AVMF provides individual grants that help veterinarians, veterinary students, and animals needing medical care in times of disaster. “Hill’s Disaster Relief Network has already partnered with multiple organizations to donate over 126,000 pounds of food to feed pets impacted by the storm. We are now providing support for veterinary professionals in Louisiana who were affected by Hurricane Ida through this partnership with the AVMF,” said Dr. Jolle Kirpensteijn, Chief Professional Veterinary Officer, Hill’s Pet Nutrition US. “Our hearts go out to all of the people and pets impacted by the storm, and we hope this funding will aid in the efforts of those working tirelessly to care for animals in need.” “We are grateful to Hill’s for helping our Foundation support people and animals in Louisiana at this time of great need,” said Dr. Douglas Kratt, Chair of the AVMF and Immediate Past President of the AVMA. “We also thank the generous AVMA members who have stepped up to support their fellow members with donations in the aftermath of this devastating storm.” To donate, please visit https://www.avmf.org/forms/donate-toavmf/. The two leaders also announced an additional donation to the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine (TUCVM) scholarship program originally established in August 2020. Hill’s new gift of $30,000 is being matched by the AVMF, for a total of $60,000 in new donations. TUCVM, which since its founding has educated 70 percent of the nation’s Black veterinarians, selects the scholarship awardees. “We are thankful for the collective generosity of Hill’s Pet Nutrition and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation to extend an additional $60,000 to assist our students in achieving their dreams of receiving their veterinary medical education here at Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine. This intentional partnership enables us to continue to advance TUCVM’s legacy to embrace and promote diversity, equity and inclusion in our beloved profession,” said Dr. Ruby L. Perry, dean of TUCVM.

The Veterinary Honor Roll celebrates the gratitude of clients, colleagues and friends whose lives have been touched by the honored veterinarian.
Veterinary Honor Roll of Missouri
Sponsor a deserving veterinarian in a special way.
Families, friends, clients and colleagues can now honor a veterinarian for their admirable life’s work. It’s easy! Contact a few other interested persons to honor the veterinarian of your choice. If you like, the MVMF office can help you with a letter writing campaign. Or you may simply wish to contribute the $500.00 minimum donation to honor the veterinarian you choose. Call 573-636-8737 for information. The Honoree’s picture and name will be placed on the Veterinary Honor Roll display in the MVMF’s Veterinary Museum. They receive a recognition plaque at an induction ceremony at the Foundation’s Museum, and their biography will be archived in the museum’s historical records. Sponsoring an outstanding veterinarian to the Veterinary Honor Roll is a special way to support the Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation and its programs and at the same time show your appreciation for a special veterinarian. Your donation is 100% tax deductible. The nominee must meet these guidelines: 1) Has held a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree for at least 10 years. 2) Is an MVMA member or has held appropriate membership throughout their career. 3) Has demonstrated leadership in their community and/or profession. 4) Must be sponsored by a current MVMA member. 5) Any nomination is subject to approval by the MVMF MISSOURI VETERINARY MEDICAL FOUN board. In extraordinary circumstances, the board may 2500 Country Club Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65109 suspend aspects of these guidelines. 573-636-8737 • mvma@movma.org • www.movma.org
