On the Cover... Even though it is said that dogs are “man’s best friend”, in the United States cats are more popular with 90 million occupying 34% of homes. According to Science Magazine, cats were domesticated 12,000 years ago when man settled down and started raising crops. That brought rodents into the picture and the “cat and mouse” game began. Heading into summer, the flea and tick game begins with a vengeance. Members are encouraged to inform their clients of the many diseases these insects bring to the table that can affect not only their pets health, but the health of their human friends.
MVMA QUARTERLY - SUMMER 2019
From the Board Chair As I am writing this message, spring is almost gone. Grass is green, trees are opening their leaves. Redbuds are changing from Cythia Vedder-Penrod, DVM pink to green as the days get longer and occasionally warmer. By the time you read this message, summer will be in full swing. Hay will be cut, spring calving season done and gardens growing. Sometimes change is negative and scary and often change is a time of growth and leads to positive results. This time of change and growth in nature has led me to consider the changes and growth that I have witnessed in myself and our organization during my tenure on the MVMA Board of governors.
I have always struggled with the question as to if I am an introvert or an extrovert. While I really do not claim either of those titles, I have always been shy. Uncomfortable to be the center of attention or add my opinion, it may seem strange that I would have chosen to run for a leadership role in the MVMA. However, I think it was one of the best personal decisions that I have ever made. I have grown personally in untold ways with my involvement with MVMA. The connections and relationships that I have developed are remarkable. My confidence and knowledge have grown as well. I am proud to be a member of an organization that is welcoming and whose members, with a variety of backgrounds, experiences and ideas, can come together and genuinely support each other and our profession.
I have also seen change and growth in the MVMA over the last few years. For any professional organization to survive, it must continue to stay relevant with changes in the profession. Like it or not, change in our profession is happening at a fairly rapid rate. Change in demographics of veterinarians, technology, social media, telemedicine, cost of education, and wellness are just a few that have become topics of conversation in the last few years. I have been proud to witness the association’s leadership. We must carefully consider these topics and let the MVMA grow and change and stay relevant with veterinarians in our state. It gives me great hope for the future of our profession and our organization so our veterinarians will continue to be the voice and leaders of veterinary medicine for years to come. Cindy Penrod, DVM
From the Executive Director Greetings from the MVMA Office, The new membership year is in full swing! We saw success with the legislative Richard Antweiler session in legalizing in-clinic stock of compounded drugs for emergency use. We also were successful in beating back assaults to the veterinary profession, including an attempt to allow chiropractors to work on animals without veterinary involvement, and an attempt to allow any lay person to practice veterinary medicine, as long as they informed the client they are not licensed. The summer has seen some successful meetings, with the Emergency 3
Sheltering Workshop, and Equine Summer program continuing to serve our membership well. The Fall Equine Dentistry Workshop also continues to be very popular as one of the most cost-effective trainings available. This is made possible only through the continued invaluable efforts of Dr. Bruce Whittle, Powerfloat founder Dr. Dennis Rach, and our sponsor Zoetis.

We hope to see you at the Missouri State Fair, and at Fetch in Kansas City this year. We also look forward to seeing you at our convention in Columbia, January 23-26, 2020.
Lastly, I would like to congratulate Julie Braun on her promotion. She is an extraordinary individual, and we are fortunate to have her in our MVMA family.
We are in the midst of membership renewal time. If you haven’t noticed your dues statement, either via email, or in your mailbox, please contact us. To fulfill our mission, it is essential

MVMA PEOPLE & EVENTS
MU-CVM Graduates 109 New Members of the Veterinary Profession The veterinary profession grew by 109 new members on May 17 as the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine graduated the Class of 2019. The CVM commencement was held in Jesse Hall on the MU campus.
“This graduating class is the first group of students that I welcomed to their clinical rotations as dean during their White Coat Ceremony, so I know this day will always have a special place in my heart,” Henry said. “We have collectively met considerable challenges in our journeys to this day and think we’ve done pretty well.”
Keynote speaker Elizabeth “Betsy” Charles, DVM, MA, executive director of the Veterinary Leadership Institute, told the graduates about lessons she and her late husband had learned from their dog, TAG, an acronym for Totally Awesome Golden. TAG quickly grew from a sweet puppy to a rambunctious adolescent dog who would race wildly around their house. All that changed one day when Charles’ husband threw a disc, which TAG immediately chased and caught. Clutching their diplomas, a happy group of new veterinarians pose in front of the MU columns. Chasing Frisbees became TAG’s purpose for the remaining 14 years of his life, Charles said. She said her own life changed when her husband asked her what she would do if she knew her purpose in life the same way their dog understood his.
Angela Tennison, DVM, associate dean for student affairs, presented the class for graduation. Linda Berent, DVM, PhD, associate dean for academic affairs, conducted the investiture, assisted by Leon Tu, DVM, clinical instructor, and Christopher Baines, PhD, associate professor. Also assisting with the ceremony were Brian Frappier, DVM, PhD, associate clinical professor, and Cathleen Kovarik, DVM, PhD, associate teaching professor.
She then asked the members of the audience to close their eyes and visualize what their life would look like if they were more TAGlike in their approach to living and brought that purpose to the table every day.
“Doctor sure has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?” he began.
MVMA President, Dr. Carol Ryan and Missouri State Veterinarian, Dr. Steve Strubberg, seated on stage as MU-CVM Dean, Dr. Carolyn Henry, speaks to the new graduates. Dr. Ryan administered the Veterinarian’s Oath.
“Sometimes it seems like a never-ending chorus of, ‘You’re not good enough’,” she said. She urged the graduates not to give those voices too much power. “Today is a day of triumph. Step once and forever into the freedom your education has prepared you for: Free to shine, free to learn, free to lead, free to love, free to be your whole and true self. Step into the waves of life with laughter and delight. Surrender with joy and peace into your purpose. Then stand firm and walk strong. Congratulations, Class of 2019,” Charles concluded. CVM Dean Carolyn Henry, DVM, MS, served as the emcee for graduation.
4
Seth Williams gave the response on behalf of Class of 2019.
Williams asked the Class of 2019 to think about who they turned to in times of joy and times of stress during their four years of the veterinary curriculum.
“The more we chase and jump after something, the more likely we are to catch it,” she said. She advised that being able to tap into the true essence of who one is meant to be is the best way to silence the voices of self-doubt and external critics.
MU Chancellor Alexander Cartwright, PhD, conferred the doctor of veterinary medicine degree to the class members. Missouri Veterinary Medical Association President Carol Ryan, DVM, led the graduates in reciting the Veterinarian’s Oath.
“None of us new veterinarians would be here today without the love and support of our family and friends, especially our significant others, parents, grandparents and close friends. Let’s give them a big Dr. Evans, ‘woo’ and a round of applause for giving us the support when we needed it the most.” He spoke of their journey to become veterinarians, for some a dream since childhood fulfilling prerequisite courses, spending hundreds of hours shadowing veterinarians, their first year in the veterinary curriculum taking “basic” science courses that were in no way basic, and spending more time at the Veterinary Health Center than in their own homes at times. He urged his classmates to never stop learning, to stay curious and to keep looking for the next door to open.
Congratulations to all new graduates! Have a fantastic and rewarding career.
MVMA QUARTERLY - SUMMER 2019
Members Gather for Veterinary Day at the Capitol Twenty-three MVMA members gathered for a strategy meeting and lunch at Lathrop and Gage Legislative Consultant’s building on March 12 with the association’s legislative consultants, Heath Clarkston and Harry Gallagher. An informative question and answer session was held so attendees completely understood the bills and felt comfortable discussing them with their legislators. The group then proceeded to call on legislators discussing the various issues affecting the veterinary community in Missouri. Examples of these bills were animal chiropractors, diagnostic lab funding, veterinary student loan forgiveness, the confiscation of animals, unlicensed person providing service for which requires an occupational license, narcotics control act, civil immunity for veterinarians reporting animal abuse/neglect, breed specific legislation, fresh start act of 2019, and many more. Good connections were made with the constituent’s representatives and a few key legislators that introduced these bills. Many thanks to the following members for volunteering their very valuable time for this important event:
Dr. Chuck Barry, Dr. Maren Bell Jones, Dr. Gregory Boyer, Dr. Lauren Delaney, Dr. Clark Fobian, Dr. David Gourley, Dr. Carolyn Henry, Dr. Lynn Martin, Dr. Cliff Miller, Dr. Laura Moon, Dr. Cynthia Penrod, Ms. Sonja Perry, Dr. Michael Pfander, Dr. Ben Potter, Dr. Neal Roetemeyer, Dr. Carol Ryan, Mr. Cody Secrest, Dr. Daniel Tappmeyer, Dr. Angela Tennison, Dr. Ken Vroman, Dr. Catherine Webb, Dr. Bruce Whittle, Dr. Shuping Zhang.
Dr. Steve Strubberg Appointed New Missouri State Veterinarian MVMA past-president, Dr. Steve Strubberg, has been appointed Missouri State Veterinarian by Governor Mike Parson. The appointment took effect on April 15, 2019. Dr. Strubberg takes the helm from two other long-time members, Dr. Taylor Woods and Dr. Linda Hickam. Dr. Strubberg grew up in Union, Missouri, with the intentions of becoming a physician. Driven by his love for science, the outdoors and animals, he soon discovered his passion lie in a different field. In 1989, he received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri. Following graduation, he assumed ownership and operated Hermann Veterinary Clinic, a mixed animal practice in Hermann, Missouri, for nearly 30 years. As Missouri’s State Veterinarian, his vision is to continue to advance animal agriculture within the state and provide health and care for each individual animal. Strubberg currently resides on a beef cattle operation in Gasconade County and has a stepdaughter and two grandchildren.

I knew the board did a lot, but had no idea how many things I would have the opportunity to be a part of. I feel like one of the most important things that the MVMA does is protect our profession legislatively. They are constantly monitoring bills that could affect veterinarians. The MVMA staff also works ALL year long to give us our conference and so much more. I am proud to be working alongside of them.” Marcy Hammerle, DVM
Candidate for Secretary-Treasurer Shelia Taylor, D.V.M. graduated from the University of Missouri-College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. Serving as your Secretary-Treasurer for the past several years has made me appreciate the profession and the members of our association even more. Therefore, I am once again running for the position of Secretary-Treasurer because for your Association to work for you, we must have a financially sound association. The officer teams and state office have worked hard to maintain the standards of the association and I wish to continue that honored tradition in this position with the help of my fellow officers, district delegates, and you the members. Thank you for your time and your support.”

He has worked with the Sedalia Animal Shelter for many years and also works with two local cat rescues. “During my career I have surrounded myself with many great mentors and I can clearly see the importance of organized veterinary medicine. Amidst my growing practice and busy days I feel that it is time to step up and be a leader of this great association. Being a young veterinary business owner I understand the needs and hurdles to clinical practice. I want to offer myself as Vice President to my colleagues in mid-career while I am passionate, energetic, and invested. I also hope to encourage and pave the way for many other emerging leaders. My core values are integrity, quality, sensibility, commitment, and compassion.” Chad McNeal, DVM
Candidate for Vice President Dr. Ed Migneco graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1986. He immediately took over Hillside Animal Hospital, in St. Louis, MO and has been practicing there since. It is for this reason that I want to give back to my profession by serving as vice-president of the MVMA. It has taken me a while to get to this point, but now that I am slowing down in my clinical practice, with my daughters taking over, I have the time and energy to devote to the association. I have two daughters following in my footsteps and a third who is applying to veterinary school this fall. What better way to ensure their future is secure than to volunteer for the association, and to add another way that I can set a good example for them going forward.” Ed Migneco, DVM

MVMA Legislative Session Summary
On Friday, May 17th the 100th Missouri General Assembly adjourned for its first regular session. Amid all the challenges throughout the year, the General Assembly was able to pass 94 bills of the 1,766 filed by both chambers. The last half of the session was dominated by non-veterinary issues including abortion, confined animal feeding operations, and infrastructure. Tort reform, which is a priority of MVMA, was partially addressed in a bill establishing venue and joinder limitations. The General Assembly passed a $29.7 billion budget that included full funding of $300,000 for the veterinary student loan repayment program, but nothing for upgrading the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab at the UM College of Veterinary Medicine. However, groundwork was laid with legislators on this issue which will hopefully bear fruit in the next session. MVMA-supported several bills which saw inaction due to the other controversial issues mentioned earlier that ate up legislative floor time. The MVMA-supported bills included: veterinarian financial protection in an animal confiscation case; civil immunity for veterinarians reporting animal neglect/abuse; and a ban on municipal breed specific ordinances. MVMA successfully opposed the following bills which did NOT pass: allowing chiropractors to practice veterinary medicine without a veterinarian’s involvement; and permitting an unlicensed person to provide any service that requires licensing (including veterinary medicine) as long as that person discloses that they do not have a license.

MVMA Successful In Securing Emergency Rules on Compounded Drugs From Pharmacy and Veterinary Boards
A
fter over a year of hard work and collaboration with the Missouri Board of Pharmacy and the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board, the MVMA is happy to announce that each of those boards have issued emergency rules that enable Missouri veterinarians to stock (with limitations) compounded drugs to be used in emergencies, until patient-specific prescriptions can be ordered and filled. These rules are in effect as of March 31, 2019, until January 8, 2020, when the rules require approval by the legislature to make them permanent. The Missouri Board of Pharmacy rule sets out requirements that allow pharmacies to provide these non-patient specific drugs to Missouri veterinarians for emergency use. The Missouri Veterinary Medical Board rule governs the quantity allowed, and the rules for dispensing these drugs. The new veterinary rule states: “A veterinarian may dispense no more than a seven- (7) day supply per patient from an office stock compounded preparation provided by a licensed pharmacy. A patientspecific prescription must be issued to continue treatment beyond seven (7) days and comply with all other requirements under this rule. Although no specific stock quantity per clinic is designated, the MVMA strongly recommends every clinic take into account the conventional demand within their practice, the storage requirements, and the expiration dates for each compounded drug they store and stock, and to be prepared to justify these quantities if the clinic is audited. You should expect unusual scrutiny as you practice under these new rules, and should avoid any perception of using the new rules to skirt the strictly enforced rule that requires a patient-specific prescription outside of the emergency nature of the new rule. Also, please remember that compounded drug use in food producing animals continues to be illegal and nothing in these new emergency rules change that federal mandate. MVMA will work diligently to encourage the legislature to make the rules permanent by January.

MVMA QUARTERLY - SUMMER 2019
Rural Veterinary Care Bill Introduced in U.S. House of Representatives American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) President Dr. John de Jong released the following statement in response to today’s introduction of the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program Enhancement Act in the U.S. House of Representatives by Reps. Ron Kind (D-Wis.), Adrian Smith (R-Neb.), Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.) and Ted Yoho (R-Fla.). This legislation is a companion bill to the Senate bill (S.1163) and would eliminate a withholding tax to maximize funding for the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program, which provides loan assistance to place food animal and public health veterinarians in U.S. Department of Agriculture-designated veterinary shortage areas. This bill will help close veterinary access gaps in rural communities. “Too many rural communities today don’t have access to adequate veterinary care, leaving livestock at risk for dangerous diseases that could impact agricultural communities and threaten public health. Unfortunately, the reality is that food animal veterinary careers typically pay less than small animal careers, and high levels of student debt can make it financially difficult for veterinarians to follow these career paths.
20
The Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program is extremely effective in addressing this challenge because it provides veterinarians with loan repayment assistance so they don’t have to choose between paying off their loans and pursuing food animal or public health careers. These efforts are critical to our farming and ranching communities, and we’re grateful to the members of Congress who recognize the importance of supporting and expanding this program.”
MVMA members are encouraged to contact their individual U.S. House of Representatives members in relation to this important legislation.

CAUTION: Federal (USA) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. Description: NexGard® (afoxolaner) is available in four sizes of beef-flavored, soft chewables for oral administration to dogs and puppies according to their weight. Each chewable is formulated to provide a minimum afoxolaner dosage of 1.14 mg/lb (2.5 mg/kg). Afoxolaner has the chemical composition 1-Naphthalenecarboxamide, 4-[5- [3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-phenyl]-4, 5-dihydro5-(trifluoromethyl)-3-isoxazolyl]-N-[2-oxo-2-[(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)amino]ethyl. Indications: NexGard kills adult fleas and is indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), and the treatment and control of Black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis), American Dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis), Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum), and Brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) infestations in dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older, weighing 4 pounds of body weight or greater, for one month. NexGard is indicated for the prevention of Borrelia burgdorferi infections as a direct result of killing Ixodes scapularis vector ticks. Dosage and Administration: NexGard is given orally once a month, at the minimum dosage of 1.14 mg/lb (2.5 mg/kg). Dosing Schedule: Body Weight 4.0 to 10.0 lbs. 10.1 to 24.0 lbs. 24.1 to 60.0 lbs. 60.1 to 121.0 lbs. Over 121.0 lbs.

NexGard can be administered with or without food. Care should be taken that the dog consumes the complete dose, and treated animals should be observed for a few minutes to ensure that part of the dose is not lost or refused. If it is suspected that any of the dose has been lost or if vomiting occurs within two hours of administration, redose with another full dose. If a dose is missed, administer NexGard and resume a monthly dosing schedule. Flea Treatment and Prevention: Treatment with NexGard may begin at any time of the year. In areas where fleas are common yearround, monthly treatment with NexGard should continue the entire year without interruption. To minimize the likelihood of flea reinfestation, it is important to treat all animals within a household with an approved flea control product. Tick Treatment and Control: Treatment with NexGard may begin at any time of the year (see Effectiveness). Contraindications: There are no known contraindications for the use of NexGard. Warnings: Not for use in humans. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. In case of accidental ingestion, contact a physician immediately. Precautions: Afoxolaner is a member of the isoxazoline class. This class has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures. Seizures have been reported in dogs receiving isoxazoline class drugs, even in dogs without a history of seizures. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders (see Adverse Reactions and PostApproval Experience). The safe use of NexGard in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. Adverse Reactions: In a well-controlled US field study, which included a total of 333 households and 615 treated dogs (415 administered afoxolaner; 200 administered active control), no serious adverse reactions were observed with NexGard. Over the 90-day study period, all observations of potential adverse reactions were recorded. The most frequent reactions reported at an incidence of > 1% within any of the three months of observations are presented in the following table. The most frequently reported adverse reaction was vomiting. The occurrence of vomiting was generally self-limiting and of short duration and tended to decrease with subsequent doses in both groups. Five treated dogs experienced anorexia during the study, and two of those dogs experienced anorexia with the first dose but not subsequent doses. Table 1: Dogs With Adverse Reactions. enrolled and completed the study. Another dog with a history of seizures had a seizure 19 days after the third dose of NexGard. The dog remained enrolled and completed the study. A third dog with a history of seizures received NexGard and experienced no seizures throughout the study. Post-Approval Experience (July 2018): The following adverse events are based on post-approval adverse drug experience reporting. Not all adverse events are reported to FDA/CVM. It is not always possible to reliably estimate the adverse event frequency or establish a causal relationship to product exposure using these data. The following adverse events reported for dogs are listed in decreasing order of reporting frequency for NexGard: Vomiting, pruritus, lethargy, diarrhea (with and without blood), anorexia, seizure, hyperactivity/ restlessness, panting, erythema, ataxia, dermatitis (including rash, papules), allergic reactions (including hives, swelling), and tremors. Contact Information: For a copy of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or to report suspected adverse drug events, contact Merial at 1-888-637-4251 or www.nexgardfordogs.com. For additional information about adverse drug experience reporting for animal drugs, contact FDA at 1-888-FDA-VETS or online at http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/SafetyHealth. Mode of Action: Afoxolaner is a member of the isoxazoline family, shown to bind at a binding site to inhibit insect and acarine ligand-gated chloride channels, in particular those gated by the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), thereby blocking pre- and post-synaptic transfer of chloride ions across cell membranes. Prolonged afoxolaner-induced hyperexcitation results in uncontrolled activity of the central nervous system and death of insects and acarines. The selective toxicity of afoxolaner between insects and acarines and mammals may be inferred by the differential sensitivity of the insects and acarines’ GABA receptors versus mammalian GABA receptors. Effectiveness: In a well-controlled laboratory study, NexGard began to kill fleas four hours after initial administration and demonstrated >99% effectiveness at eight hours. In a separate wellcontrolled laboratory study, NexGard demonstrated 100% effectiveness against adult fleas 24 hours post-infestation for 35 days, and was ≥93% effective at 12 hours post-infestation through Day 21, and on Day 35. On Day 28, NexGard was 81.1% effective 12 hours post-infestation. Dogs in both the treated and control groups that were infested with fleas on Day -1 generated flea eggs at 12- and 24-hours post-treatment (0-11 eggs and 1-17 eggs in the NexGard treated dogs, and 4-90 eggs and 0-118 eggs in the control dogs, at 12- and 24-hours, respectively). At subsequent evaluations post-infestation, fleas from dogs in the treated group were essentially unable to produce any eggs (0-1 eggs) while fleas from dogs in the control group continued to produce eggs (1-141 eggs). In a 90-day US field study conducted in households with existing flea infestations of varying severity, the effectiveness of NexGard against fleas on the Day 30, 60 and 90 visits compared with baseline was 98.0%, 99.7%, and 99.9%, respectively. Collectively, the data from the three studies (two laboratory and one field) demonstrate that NexGard kills fleas before they can lay eggs, thus preventing subsequent flea infestations after the start of treatment of existing flea infestations. In well-controlled laboratory studies, NexGard demonstrated >97% effectiveness against Dermacentor variabilis, >94% effectiveness against Ixodes scapularis, and >93% effectiveness against Rhipicephalus sanguineus, 48 hours post-infestation for 30 days. At 72 hours postinfestation, NexGard demonstrated >97% effectiveness against Amblyomma americanum for 30 days. In two separate, well-controlled laboratory studies, NexGard was effective at preventing Borrelia burgdorferi infections after dogs were infested with Ixodes scapularis vector ticks 28 days post-treatment. Animal Safety: In a margin of safety study, NexGard was administered orally to 8 to 9-week-old Beagle puppies at 1, 3, and 5 times the maximum exposure dose (6.3 mg/kg) for three treatments every 28 days, followed by three treatments every 14 days, for a total of six treatments. Dogs in the control group were sham-dosed. There were no clinically-relevant effects related to treatment on physical examination, body weight, food consumption, clinical pathology (hematology, clinical chemistries, or coagulation tests), gross pathology, histopathology or organ weights. Vomiting occurred throughout the study, with a similar incidence in the treated and control groups, including one dog in the 5x group that vomited four hours after treatment. In a well-controlled field study, NexGard was used concomitantly with other medications, such as vaccines, anthelmintics, antibiotics (including topicals), steroids, NSAIDS, anesthetics, and antihistamines. No adverse reactions were observed from the concomitant use of NexGard with other medications. Storage Information: Store at or below 30°C (86°F) with excursions permitted up to 40°C (104°F). How Supplied: NexGard is available in four sizes of beef-flavored soft chewables: 11.3, 28.3, 68 or 136 mg afoxolaner. Each chewable size is available in color-coded packages of 1, 3 or 6 beef-flavored chewables. NADA 141-406, Approved by FDA Marketed by: Frontline Vet Labs™, a Division of Merial, Inc. QUICK TIP Three Reasons You Didn’t Get the Results You Wanted in 2018 (And what to change in 2019)
You have been in business for a few years. You work more hours than you want, missing out on family and life. Even worse, you are not providing the finances or the lifestyle for your family as you had envisioned as a practice owner. This is really stuck in your craw. You are not bringing home the bacon...but WHY?
#1—You Focused on Revenue vs. Profit While growing revenue is a healthy business activity, focusing on profits is even more important. Profit is what you use to reinvest in your practice, pay off debts, and what provides you a return on investment so you can provide for your family and your lifestyle. #2—You Exchanged Time for Control One of the biggest complaints from practice owners is that your practice consumes your life. Why? You are exchanging time for control. Delegating more of what you spend your hours working on will free up your time. In order to do this, you need to give up some control. #3—No Direction How does GPS work? It knows where it is and it will take you to where you want to go, as long as you know where that is. Your business is similar and needs a destination. Let’s get you the results you want in 2019! 1. Be clear on what you want to achieve. Plug the destination into the GPS (your mind). 2. Set specific goals that upon completion, move you toward your destination. 3. Create actions steps to accomplish your goals. 4. Share the destination, goals, and action steps with your team. Even better, once you set the destination, involve your entire team in setting the specific goals and actions steps. 5. Delegate as much as possible. 6. Eliminate time wasters that keep you busy but not productive. 7. Focus on growing profit. Give me a call and we can discuss some steps to help make 2019 your best year yet!

AAVMC Cost Comparison Tool The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges has developed this Cost Comparison Tool to help prospective students further develop a financial plan for veterinary school. As concerns continue to grow about the increasing educational debt held by recent veterinary school graduates, it is imperative that prospective students take time to consider and plan for the costs associated with becoming a veterinarian. The Cost Comparison Tool presents several key pieces of financial data that should be considered when applying to veterinary school. The map tab provides data for all 30 colleges in the United States, as well as 12 international colleges. The map includes resident, non-resident and international total tuition (adjusted for colleges where residency may be established after the first year) charged to the class of 2019, the average amount of institutional scholarship aid awarded to first year professional students, the percentage of students to whom it was awarded, the cost of living for each of the participating colleges and estimated loan interest accrued on a fully financed education.
You Don’t Need Workers’ Compensation for Employees if They Have Health Insurance? FALSE! Health Insurance Will NoT Pay for Medical Expenses Stemming from a Work Related Injury.

New Certificate Program Supports Veterinary
VMAE Veterinary News by Ralph Johnson AVMA is offering a new certificate program that empowers veterinarians and team members with the knowledge and skills to create a culture of wellbeing in their veterinary workplace. The Workplace Wellbeing Certificate Program, created with the assistance of an educational grant from Merck Animal Health, is the first certificate program to be offered through the AVMA Axon digital education platform. Taught by subject matter experts and leaders across the veterinary community, the program is comprised of five modules that connect all veterinary team members with critical resources for group and individual problem solving focused on creating a culture of wellbeing. The five modules can be taken individually or completed as a unit. Participants set their own pace and can earn up to 4 continuing education (CE) credit hours. All participants must complete the first module—“Creating a Culture of Wellbeing”—before moving on to the remaining modules, which may be completed in any order. Participants who complete all modules will earn an AVMA Workplace Wellbeing Certificate of Completion in addition to their CE credit. The modules are: Creating a Culture of Wellbeing: Jen Brandt, AVMA director of wellbeing and diversity, introduces and sets the stage for the Workplace Wellbeing Certificate Program, discussing the differences and similarities between wellbeing and wellness, the moral and ethical imperatives for creating a culture of wellbeing, factors affecting veterinary clinician wellbeing, and strategies for creating a wellbeing culture within the veterinary workplace. Participants must complete this session before moving on to the rest of the program. How to Request, Receive, and Give Feedback Effectively: Dr. Brandt discusses the positive impact that constructive feedback can have on team performance in a veterinary 29
practice, and explains the difference between descriptive and evaluative feedback, and best practices for requesting and receiving feedback. Transforming Conflict: Dr. Brandt and Dr. Elizabeth Strand, founding director of veterinary social work at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, challenge existing perceptions of conflict and discuss the influence of brain states in managing conflict effectively. Participants learn the difference between rigid, porous and healthy boundaries, and how, when and why to set compassionate boundaries to support individual wellbeing in the workplace. QPR Assessment: The QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer—the three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. In this module, participants learn how to recognize the signs that a colleague may be considering suicide, as well as how to establish a dialogue and guide the person to seek professional help. QPR gatekeeper training is not a substitute for professional assistance, but it can be a critical tool to save lives—and it’s something that any veterinary professional can learn to do. Diversity and Inclusion: Dr. Lisa Greenhill, AAVMC senior director for research and diversity, and Dr. Dane Whitaker, president-elect for Pride Veterinary Medical Community, discuss key attributes of inclusive work environments, and how to identify them. Learn about terminology related to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and come away with strategies to reduce bias and emotional burden for marginalized populations in a work environment.
The Workplace Wellbeing Certificate Program is offered free of charge to all AVMA and SAVMA members, as a benefit of membership in the AVMA. The cost for other veterinary professionals to register is $75. See AVMA’s other wellbeing resources at avma.org/Wellbeing.

MVMF Veterinary Honor Roll Inducts Three New Members
The Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation (MVMF) has announced the winner of the 2019 Animal Archives “Pet of the Year.” The Archives offers an internet-based memorial program “Sugar” 2019 Animal devoted to departed Archives Pet of the Year pets. This year’s winner is “Sugar,” a twelve-year-old mixed breed owned by Ted, Susan and Hope Worstell of Columbia, Mo. Her veterinarian was Brandie Reeves, DVM, at Noah’s Ark Animal Hospital, Columbia, MO.
The Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation (MVMF) has announced the induction for three new members into the Veterinary Honor Roll of Missouri.
Pet of the Year
Sugar was one of six nominees in this year’s competition. Nominees are chosen from the previous year’s submissions to the Archives. During 2018/2019, the public was invited to vote online for their favorite departed pet based on its life story and the bond between the pet and its owners. Over 2,000 votes were cast for the six candidates. An Honorable Mention goes to the other five Pet of the Year candidates: “Jake”, “Lexi”, “Dolly Madison”, “Pepper” and “Kellie”. “Sugar was a member of our family whom we loved very much. The last two years without her have been difficult but we enjoy talking about our favorite memories with her. She has a brother now, Sparky, who brings a lot of joy to our family and we enjoy telling him about Sugar too! “We are so grateful to Dr. Reeves and the staff at Noah’s Ark Animal Hospital for their care and concern for our precious Sugar.”
You can now view the next Pet of the Year candidates and vote for your favorite pet. Go to the Animal Archives of Missouri website at www.mopetmemorial.com. 30

A short while back Kathy Casteel from “Missouri Life” Magazine stopped by for a visit to the Veterinary Museum of Missouri and it resulted in a very nice article in the magazine’s June 2019 issue. It’s entitled, “Hairballs & Kidney Stones & Piglets (Oh My!)” and gives an intriguing overview of the museum’s history, mission and “eclectic collection” . Many thanks to Kathy and “Missouri Life” for including the museum in the magazine.

MVMA QUARTERLY - SUMMER 2019
MVMA’s Quality Assurance Program What Is the Missouri Stocker/Feeder Quality Assurance Program? The Missouri Stocker Feeder Quality Assurance Program is designed to meet the quality improvement and pre-conditioning needs of producers, feeders, and consumers. This program educates participants in immunology, animal well-being and the economics of disease. Participation in the program increases producer accountability for quality and safety of the product they sell.
How Does the Program Work? Veterinarians and producers must be certified. Veterinarians are certified by MVMA MSFQAP Committee members. Producers are certified by their veterinarian. Veterinarians and producers learn how they can influence carcass quality and consumer confidence by monitoring where and when injections are administered. Once certified, the producer may participate in the program at one of three levels (white, red or blue tag). The three-level approach allows all producers the opportunity to match their level of management and facilities to the level of participation.
Level 1: Show-Me Select (White Tag) • Participating veterinarians and producers must be certified. • Calves must be properly identified with an approved ear tag. Tag numbers will be listed on an approved certificate. • External and internal parasite control is adminis- tered. • Calves will be dehorned and healed. Calves will also be castrated with a knife and healed or verified to be steers. • Vaccinations: 7-way clostridial, IBR, BVD, PI3,
BRSV, Mannheimia haemolytica with leukotoxoid, (Histophilus is optional.) • Cattle must be born on the producer’s farm. A range of birthdates or the birthdate of the oldest calf in the group must be recorded. • Bull in and out dates will be provided. • Individual calf treatments will be recorded to include date, product, dosage, route of administra- tion and injection site. • Vaccinations must be given no younger than four months of age and at least 21 days before sale.
Level 2: Show-Me Superior (Red Tag) • Weaned 45 days before offering for sale. • Meet Level 1 requirements - NOTE: Initial vac- cinations may be given at an age determined by an attending veterinarian. • In addition, a second round of vaccinations must be given using the following guidelines: • A 7-way clostridial as well as a modified live vaccine containing IBR, PI3, BVD and BRSV must be administer- ed; • Histophilus somni is optional; • Only one dose of Manheimia heamolytica is required if that dose is administered to calves 5 months of age or older; • The time frame between initial and second vaccinations must be a minimum of 21 days and all vaccinations must be completed at least seven days prior to sale; • If a veterinarian determines initial vaccinations should be given to calves less than 4 months of age then second vaccinations must not occur until calves are 5 months of age or older.
Level 3: Show-Me Supreme (Blue Tag) • Meet Level 1 and Level 2 requirements. • All cattle must be tested and be negative for persistent BVD infection. • Genetic information is optional.
For more information, visit the MVMA website at www.movma. org. An online MSFQAP Producer Manual, online veterinarian certification, and other materials are available. 33
