MVMA QUARTERLY - WINTER 2023

From the President-Elect Hello friends and colleagues! As I write this article, the last notes of summer are giving way to the brisk air of fall, Kacie Ulhorn, DVM and on the horizon comes the chill of winter – the end to another wonderful year. I enjoy the changing of seasons and how it parallels to the changing phases of life. There is much written about being truly present in each moment you are living, and I sometimes find this can be a challenge in our current world of veterinary medicine. A world where weekly, daily, and oftentimes, hourly updates are available at our fingertips. We have the ability to keep up with almost anything we care too; and oftentimes, at the expense of keeping up with our own lives. Appreciating your place can be a bit easier when you really dig into what is great about your unique situation, rather than letting comparison steal

3

the moment. Many of us have similar struggles; whether you’re a vet student dying to be in practice after you see a friend posting one of their coolest cases. Or you’re a recent graduate still trying to navigate the career in front of you, while a classmate seems to manage double your caseload without batting an eye. Maybe you’re at the height of your career, and you’re experiencing the burnout that so many of us face, while you see others that still have the excitement and joy of the profession. By embracing the season and phase of life that you are in, you can quiet the comparison and truly find the joy in each and every moment. There are unique and truly wonderful moments in every aspect of our lives if we choose to slow down, and focus on plucking out those amazing memories. This holiday season, I hope you find your family healthy and with many opportunities to enjoy good food, festive drinks, and quality time well spent with the ones you love most. I want to thank you again for the opportunity to serve

our association and our profession in this capacity. It is quite an honor to be a part of the leadership of this organization, and to experience such a fantastic membership. You all are doing amazing things! With that being said, I would like to extend a personal invitation to the 2024 MVMA Annual Convention in Columbia, Missouri. Each year I truly enjoy this event more and more, and the planning committee and I have worked hard to offer a unique and engaging program of CE this year. A line-up that I believe you will find creative, beneficial, and re-inspiring. I believe that your mindset can change everything, so in conclusion, I ask that you take this opportunity to gather with colleagues, share a few laughs, and remember why you wanted to be a veterinarian in the first place, while you grab some pearls of knowledge at the MVMA Convention. Kacie Ulhorn, DVM

aturday begins with the Annual General Membership Meeting and Breakfast. Come early to take part in the business of your association. Join us and our keynote speaker, Betsy Charles, DVM after the General Membership Meeting and Breakfast on Saturday morning. Elizabeth “Betsy” Charles, DVM, MA combines a wide variety of professional experiences with her love of veterinary medicine in order to help others be the best they can be. She graduated from Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. She joined a performance horse practice as an associate veterinarian and then, after 3 Betsy Charles, DVM, MA years, served as their Imaging Center Director for another 3 years. One of her main areas of interest is generational diversity as it applies to veterinary medicine and she has spoken on this topic at veterinary colleges around the country, various state veterinary medical association meetings, the AAEP National Convention, and the North American Veterinary Conference. She has been involved with the Veterinary Leadership Experience as a speaker and facilitator for 9 years and is now the Executive Director of The Veterinary Leadership Institute. In addition to Dr. Charles keynote address, she will provide continuing education workshops throughout the day on Saturday, as well as, a equine lab on Sunday. MVMA QUARTERLY - WINTER 2023

Congratulations to the Class of 2025!

MU-CVM Students Don Their White Coats Article by Tracey Berry with photo by Karen Clifford, MU-CVM Amid hugs, handshakes, and a few whoops, 110 members of the MU College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2025 took the next step in their journey to becoming veterinarians. The college held its annual White Coat Ceremony Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Missouri Theatre. Students selected a family member, friend or mentor to present them with a white laboratory coat, representing their readiness to begin the clinical portion of their professional education. CVM Interim Dean Leah Cohn, DVM, PhD, told the students that they are now ambassadors for the college, and she encouraged them to serve as leaders within their profession. “Possessing a willingness to step forward as leaders in the profession is more important now than ever,” she said. “If the past few years have proven anything, it’s that veterinary medicine and the MU CVM are in the midst of a rapidly changing environment, particularly as it relates to how we as veterinarians serve society.” Class Vice President Alex Mandi delivered a response on behalf of the class. “In our journey thus far, we have completed 88 total weeks of didactic education, more than 300 quizzes and exams, over 2,200 hours of lectures and labs, and countless hours of

studying,” he said. “We have grown close over the past two years as a class and can lean on one another when times get tough. Just as importantly, we can celebrate together in our moments of triumph.” “When asked what it means to be a veterinarian, for me compassionate, persevering, and selfless are a few words that come to mind. We are all compassionate toward our fellow humans, animals, and the world we live in. We persevere, when at times it seems we’ll never make it through. And we are selfless, always willing to help others, whether it’s creating study groups in anatomy, designing a toxicology Jeopardy, or sharing Quizlets amongst each other. Our class has displayed these three attributes and so much more.” Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery Chair John Dodam, DVM, PhD, also offered a welcome “across the parking lot,” as the class begins hands-on training in the Veterinary Health Center and the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. Ed Migneco, DVM, Missouri Veterinary Medical Association executive board chair, and Julie Braun, MVMA executive director, also participated in the ceremony, presenting each student in the class with a name badge and lapel pin courtesy of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation and Association.

Popular MVMA Equine Dental Seminar has another successful year helping rescued horses.

MVMA Hosts Equine Dental Seminar It was a busy weekend for 10 veterinarians who attended the MVMA Equine Committee’s Fall Equine Dental Seminar. The course was held September 29-October 21, 2023 at the Missouri Humane Society’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and offered 18.5 hours of MVMA Academyapproved continuing education. The seminar attracted attendees from as far away as Tennesee, Nebraska and New York, as well as multiple Missouri veterinarians. The lecture was sponsored by PowerFloat, Inc., Zoetis Animal Health and the MVMA. The course covered oral cavity anatomy/physiology; dental instruments and techniques; sedation techniques; dental pathology and treatment; and a hands-on dental wet lab utilizing rescued horses at the Humane Society’s farm. Veterinarian attendees performed various dental treatments at no charge on 35 of the ranch’s horses waiting for adoption. The dollar value of these services is estimated at over $6,000.

All smiles after a long weekend! Instructors, attendees and Longmeadow Rescue Ranch staff gather for a photo after the seminar.

The expertise of these veterinarians underscores the need to involve a licensed veterinarian in equine dental care. Equine dentistry practiced without the involvement of a veterinarian is illegal and unauthorized without supervision in the State of Missouri. The presenters at the lecture were Dr. Dennis Rach and Dr. Bruce Whittle. Dr. Rach is a former member of Moore & Co. Veterinary Services, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He continues to develop new modalities for equine dentistry. Dr. Bruce Whittle is a predominantly large animal veterinarian and co-owner of a mixed animal practice with his wife, Dr. Gayla, in Trenton, Missouri. He has a passion for dentistry and has been actively involved in teaching dentistry short courses at numerous veterinary colleges through the AAEP since 2009.

Left: Dr. Bruce Whittle works with Dr. Elizabeth Griffin on one of the ranches horses. Center: Dr. Cathy Hicks assists Dr. Morgan Hecox with an examination. Center: Dr. Dennis Rach (right) instructs attendees on the importance of an oral exam under sedation.

Continuing Education Lab Overview (Sign up on registration form.)

MVMA QUARTERLY - WINTER 2023

Sunday, January 28 8:00-11:50 am • Bovine Podiatry Lab • Tim Evans, DVM • Note: Saturday lecture required. There will be one required lecture reviewing normal anatomy of the bovine foot and its associated structures, as well as some of the most common bovine podiatric diseases. A laboratory session will be held at the Holiday Inn Expo Center using cadaver specimens to demonstrate common foot abnormalities and how to address them diagnostically and therapeutically. 8:00-11:50 am • Communications Lab • Insights Discovery • Heidi Hulon, DVM, CCFP • Note: Must pre-register. Cost $75.00 The Insights Discovery methodology uses a simple and memorable four color model to help people understand their style, their strengths and the value they bring to the team. We call these the color energies, and it’s the unique mix of Fiery Red, Sunshine Yellow, Earth Green and Cool Blue energies, which determines how and why people behave the way they do. A great opportunity to bring the team for a deep dive into communication styles. Must pre-register and take the assessment in advance. 8:00-9:50 am • Practical Ultrasound Skills for the General Practitioner • Betsy Charles, DVM, MA • To be held at MU-CVM • Limited to 30 In order to serve our equine patients well in the field, we need useful tools that will help us get to an accurate diagnosis. Often, CE lab opportunities are full of great information, but much of it is not readily applied in the field setting. Building on the motto, consistent practice over time in a psychologically safe team with contextual expert feedback leads to skill mastery, participants will learn a strategy that will allow them to become proficient ultrasonographers in the field using the tools that are readily available to them. We will cover the basics of buttons, understanding how to maximize your probe, and where and how to look for common pathology in the thorax, abdomen and distal limb. Come prepared to get your hands (and arms and sleeves) covered with gel as we practice the skills that will set you up for success when you get back to work. 10:00-11:50 am • Equine Lameness/Nerve Blocks & Wet Lab • Kevin Keegan, DVM & Lyndsey Hayden, DVM • To be held at MU-CVM • Limited to 30 A dynamic laboratory session focused on mastering lameness evaluations in horses through expert observation. We’ll explore the critical skills of visually diagnosing forelimb and hind limb lameness, emphasizing the importance of subjective assessment in differentiating between impact and pushoff lameness. While we’ll briefly use body-mounted inertial sensors for objective validation, the workshop prioritizes practical, eye-based evaluation techniques, essential for everyday veterinary practice. This session is a blend of art and science in veterinary diagnostics, tailored for immediate application in your daily work. 9:00-9:50 am • Certifications for Salmonella Pullorum/Typhoid Whole Blood Plate Testing and Swabbing Gallinaceous Poultry and Waterfowl for Avian Influenza PCR Testing. • Bill Pittenger • Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Agriculture Review of the procedures for whole blood plate testing of gallinaceous poultry and waterfowl. Perform whole blood plate testing of chickens for MDA certification. Review of swabbing recommendations for collecting oral and cloacal samples from gallinaceous poultry and waterfowl for avian influenza PCR testing. Perform oral and cloacal swabbing of chickens for MDA certification.

Visit with the CVM Mules at this year’s convention! Look for them outside the Exhibit Hall area.

MVMA Board Approves Proposed Dues Increase Effective May 2024 The MVMA Board’s policy on dues increase is as follows: The Board of Governors should always ensure association expenses are necessary and related to the MVMA’s mission and strategic plan. If expenses justifiably rise, and other sources of income are satisfactorily exploited, the Board of Governors should consider proposing a dues increase at least every two years of at least an average of 1.5% per year. This policy is intended to accurately reflect the association’s ongoing cost of doing business, to avoid crisis management, and to avoid the need for very large dues increases. It has been 2 years since a dues increase. In accordance with this policy, at its September meeting, the MVMA Executive Board discussed the increased cost of doing business therefore approving a proposed dues increase of 6% which would be effective May 2024. This proposal will be presented for approval Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the General Membership Meeting, during the annual convention held at the Holiday Inn Executive Center, Columbia, Mo. 30

QUICK TIP

MVMA QUARTERLY - WINTER 2023

Is our office taking clients with smaller hospitals? Even the ones that are not corporate targets? Yes! We are working with both small and large hospitals! In fact, of our last three sales, one was to a private buyer and two were to corporate buyers. We have another sale to a private buyer in process. Over the past couple of months, our sales have been 50/50 private/corporate. Just as many veterinary hospitals were at capacity and not taking on new clients during 2021/2022, we had the same issue. We are grateful so many veterinarians reached out to us, believing in the value we deliver. Unfortunately, for a period of time, we had to decline some client prospects. We just did not have any more hours in the day to give. We also pride ourselves in providing excellent customer service, so we wanted to make sure we were taking great care of the clients we already had. Again, like many veterinary hospitals, the client demands have tapered back to normal levels. Veterinary hospitals are back to taking on new clients and so are we! It doesnʼt matter if you are a one doctor hospital or a multi-doctor hospital, we want to help you! For Sellers:

Clinics Encouraged to Consider Donating Pet Oxygen Masks to Local Fire Departments A great idea and a great lifesaver: the MVMA has developed a step-by-step guide to make it easy for your clinic to donate these oxygen mask kits to your local fire departments. The Pet Oxygen Mask Project, an initiative of the MVMA Animal Welfare Committee in cooperation with the MVMA Emergency Management and Public Health Committee and the MVMA Missouri Volunteer Veterinary Corps, is working towards equipping Missouri fire trucks with pet oxygen masks. To start off the initiative, the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association presented the Boone County Fire District with 10 Pet Oxygen Masks on Monday, August 10th. The presentation was held at the Boone County Fire Protection District Headquarters in Columbia, MO. Two local television stations covered the event. The pet oxygen masks are specifically designed for animals and each kit comes with three different size masks that can be used on any size dog or cat, as well as ferrets, guinea pigs, birds, and more. The current cost per kit is $125.00. One kit per truck. Equipping fire trucks with pet oxygen masks will give firefighters the proper equipment they would need when trying to revive a pet that has suffered from smoke inhalation. For added public relations benefit, arrange a time with your local news outlet to make a presentation or highlight the program on your social media pages. These kits have saved many lives when they were available.

In 2016, these oxygen masks were underwritten by the MVMA as a pilot project to develop a model for local veterinary clinics to replicate this project in communities throughout Missouri.

Dr. Michael Opsomer, Springfield, Mo. sent in this photo of the oxygen masks in use by firefighters.

Kits include three sizes of masks and cost $125/kit.
