The site is a miniature of the triangular area created by intersecting highway and major roads. Distinct from the major conventional grid layout, the site is given an advantage of being at the transit intersection and a triangular shape, bringing residents on the other side of the highway to the more commercial area of Jefferson Park.

Community Catalyst at a Transit Hub

With the proposed mixed market and residential building complex, Jefferson Park was given more active and unconventional elements.

Volume Rotation and Segmentation

The market, as a relatively public space, emphasizes on open space. It was extruded from the side plan with a horizontal incision extending from the transit center into the complex. The residential volume is a duplicate of the market volume rotated by 90 degrees, emphasizing on verticality. Its central circulation and structural core intersects the horizontal incision which implies a change in direction. The market is further divided into three interior volumes with different programs by the incision and where the front façade of the residential intersects the market.

Residential

A transition for the residential design is articulated through the exploration of the connection and relationship between the market and the residential, as the final iteration promotes a more integrated relationship with the market by both connecting to the circulation core and more consistent in generic volume.
