On behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department, I would like to invite you to take part in the many recreational opportunities that we offer. This issue highlights classes and events for both the spring and summer. As we finish up the first quarter of the year, it is a great time to stay active by participating in an event, signing up for a class, learning a new skill or sharpening an old one. Head outside for a scenic walk, hike, jog or bike ride at a park or trail near you, and enjoy Wentzville’s natural beauty.

The benefits of a vibrant parks and recreation system in your community are quantifiable. While we have done a good job of sharing this information with our boards and commissions, we have not always been great at sharing our story with the public.

Soon, we will be launching a “Did You Know?” campaign to better share the measurable benefits with the public. We hope to help you better understand how much a quality parks and recreation system increases economic activity, alleviates social issues, ensures environmental sustainability, fosters community development and addresses health and wellness issues within the community. Our goal is to share the information in short snippets to equip everyone with the knowledge to: 1) Make better-informed decisions when it comes to the personal benefits you derive from what we have to offer; and, 2) Help you have the facts when discussing these benefits with your friends, family and colleagues.

To close, I want to thank our hard-working and dedicated staff for all their efforts in planning and preparing for our spring and summer programs and activities. Almost two years ago we started a process to improve the quality, quantity and diversity of programs we offer in this growing community. There have been a lot of new programs introduced over the past few years and they have all been aimed at improving your overall quality of life. We believe that the programs, facilities and special events that are offered by the Parks and Recreation Department are an important part of people’s lives in Wentzville and that parks genuinely make life better! Parks & Recreation Board

This volunteer advisory group to the Board of Aldermen, Mayor and Director of Parks and Recreation serves as a sounding board by holding public meetings and exercising influence throughout the City to improve and expand recreational opportunities. Members are appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Board of Aldermen for a three-year term. The Parks & Recreation Board meets at 6:30P on the first Monday of each month at Wentzville City Hall (310 W. Pearce Blvd.). The meetings are open to the public. Wentzville has been recognized for five consecutive years as a "Tree City USA" recipient. In the fall of 2014, Wentzville's Parks and Recreation Board created the Tree Board, which reviews the City's tree and landscape ordinances. The Tree Board consists of four members: Jim Mitchell, Scott Skopec, J.J. Suftko and Chairman Peggy Meyer. Interested in serving on the Tree Board? Resident and Nonresident Definitions Wentzville residents are those living within the City Limits of the City of Wentzville. City limits and Post Office boundaries are not the same, so it’s possible to have a Wentzville address yet live outside the city. A Household Annual Pass consists of two adults and three children, 22 years of age or younger, living in the same household. Additional children may be added to a membership for $25 per child (for residents) or $35 per child (for nonresidents). Resident Card* Information Resident Cards enable Wentzville residents to access recreation facilities, recreation programs and classes at discounted resident prices. Cards can be purchased at Progress Park (968 Meyer Rd.) for $5 per person. Each resident, ages 2 and up, must have a resident card in order to access the facilities at the resident rate. The resident card offers the following benefits: • Early registration for programs (before nonresidents) • One-time free admission to one Parks and Recreation facility • Free trees or seedlings at the annual Arbor Day Tree Giveaway (while supplies last) • Reduced rates when reserving City facilities • Reduced rates on annual passes and daily admission • Reduced rates for annual outdoor pool passes and daily admission rates • Discounts on many City-sponsored recreation programs and classes To obtain a Wentzville Resident Card, you must present both proof of identity and proof of residency.

Acceptable forms of ID, which MUST** show your current Wentzville address, include: • State-issued Driver’s License • Missouri ID Card • College Student ID Card • Military ID Card In addition, residents need one of the following with the same address as the photo ID: • An unpaid utility bill • A personal check with preprinted name and address • A current auto or voter registration • A current personal property tax statement • The most recent income tax statement • A current rental lease agreement

Storybook Walk The Friends of Wentzville Parks is excited to sponsor a new amenity to Heartland Park! The Storybook Walk provides a new outdoor adventure that champions family connection, early childhood development, and health and wellness. Stories are handpicked by local library staff quarterly with a child’s enjoyment in mind. Pages are posted at several stations along a trail, allowing families and friends to enjoy a story as they walk the path and take in the scenery. The ribbon cutting for “The Storybook Walk” will take place on Friday, June 3 before the Movie in the Park. More details can be found on pg. 29.

We need your help!

Memorial Tree and Bench Program You can honor your loved ones within our park system. Legacy trees and memorial benches provide a lasting way to pay tribute to a loved one or friend. You may also provide a donation to be used for park and recreation purposes. For further information, please contact Linda Ziolko at (636) 639-2082 or by email at Linda.Ziolko@wentzvillemo.org.

Vandalism in your park system is a serious, unnecessary and costly problem.

Each year, the City spends thousands of tax dollars to remove graffiti and repair damage done by vandals. We would much rather use your funding to enhance and beautify the parks! If you have a cell phone with you or live adjacent to a park, you can help us out with “PARK WATCH” program. If you see anyone acting suspicious, damaging property, driving on the grass or defacing playground equipment, please report it by calling the Wentzville Police Department at (636) 327-5105. THANK YOU!

Wentzville CERT CERT or Community Emergency Response Team, is a program in which the Wentzville Police Department partners with the Wentzville Fire Department and the Wentzville Emergency Management Office. Wentzville CERT meets every other month at the Wentzville Police Department and offers free training opportunities to the public. Participants receive training in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

After training, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhoods or workplaces following an event when professional responders are not immediately available. Registration is recommended to ensure enough space for all participants; please email Wentzville CERT at wentvillecert@aol.com (please note: there is no “z”).

Whether it is a family outing, corporate picnic, wedding or other special event, we make it easy for you to host your event.

We have fields, facilities, pavillions and more to meet your needs. Reservations are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Register Early for Programs All programs must meet minimum enrollment in order to be offered.

If there are not enough registrants, a course must be canceled.

Unless otherwise noted, all registrations must be received a minimum of one week prior to the start of the first class. Parks and Recreation reserves the right to cancel, postpone, combine classes or change instructors as needed. If a class is canceled due to lack of enrollment, registered class participants will be notified of an alternate class or program if one is available, or a full refund check or credit slip will be processed within four weeks.

Accommodation Policy We offer medical reasonable accommodations to enable an individual’s successful participation in our programs and services.

To ensure a medically safe and appropriately planned program, please provide any special needs or precautions which may require medical accommodations for participation; once the registration has been processed, a staff member will call the registrant to obtain additional information. Photos & Videos The City of Wentzville may take photos and/or videos of enrolled program participants. These photos/videos are for City use only and may be used in future brochures, on the City of Wentzville website, on social media pages, in fliers or on displays. If you do not want yourself or your child photographed/filmed, please notify the administration office in writing in advance of the program starting.

Refund Guidelines: • A full (100%) refund/credit/transfer will be given if Wentzville Parks & Recreation cancels the program or rental.

• If the participant withdraws from the program before the first class/game*, the department must receive a request and a full refund will be given, less a $10 administrative fee**.

• *No refunds will be issued for adult leagues after the registration deadline.

• Refunds for medical reasons requested prior to the start date of program will be granted a full refund** subject to verification.

• If the participant withdraws from the program any time after the first class/game, the department requires a request and a prorated refund will be given, less a $10 administrative fee**.

No refunds will be issued after the program/session is half over.

• **All youth league refunds will be less the cost of uniforms.

• A credit may be applied to participant’s account instead of a refund. Credit can be used on future programs. A credit may be used by any member on the same household account.

• An administrative cancellation fee of $10 or 10% of the reservation fee, whichever is greater, will apply to all rentals canceled up to two weeks before the event. Cancellations requested less than two weeks from the date of the activity will be charged 50% of the reservation fee.

WENTZVILLE PARKS AND RECREATION GIFT CARDS MAKE GREAT GIFTS! Gift cards can be purchased for classes and for annual passes to any facility in the Wentzville Parks and Recreation system. For more information, please call (636) 332-9236.

WE P.L.A.Y. Scholarship (Wentzville Residents Only) The WE P.L.A.Y. Scholarship program (or WEntzville Providing Leisure Assistance for Youth) is designed to provide youth access to the recreation and leisure activities of their choice ― regardless of their ability to pay. Please call the Parks and Recreation Department at (636) 332-9236 for more information.

Who is eligible? City of Wentzville residents who are experiencing financial difficulty or who are in a unique hardship situation may apply.

•

How does the program work? Children residing within the city limits and who qualify through the established guidelines of free lunch program utilized by the Wentzville and Fort Zumwalt school districts are eligible to apply. Children who do not receive the reduced or free lunch program may still qualify and are encouraged to apply, if assistance is needed.

Children ages 17 and under are eligible to receive one program scholarship per brochure with a maximum of three per year.

Volunteer Wentzville is off to a great start in 2016.

We are thrilled to welcome many volunteers to our new and improved program.

Volunteering is a great experience and allows you to work with like-minded people in a business setting while helping others and the community. We are always looking for quality people to provide their time, talents and excellent service to our residents. This includes individuals 16 years and older, high school students needing mandatory hours of service, church, corporate and civic groups. Check out our Volunteer Application Process below: 1.

All volunteers, 17 years and older, must submit to and pass a standard background check. (Background checks require renewal on an annual basis).

Exceptions include high school students with signed reference form and groups who work on special projects.

The selections and screening process may include an interview and reference check.

Final volunteer placement is dependent upon passing the background check. Please allow up to two weeks for the selection process to be completed.

You will be contacted within two weeks by the Volunteer Manager to discuss the available volunteer opportunities.

Don’t miss the annual 4th of July celebration and parade. Everyone is invited to participate in the parade by making or designing a float. Build your boat from only corrugated cardboard and duct tape, decorate it, and hope it survives the race. Two people must be in the boat during the race. All boats must be human-powered (no motors). The Hill of Thrills Soapbox Race is a community event, which features cars donated by businesses and organizations. Racers are randomly placed in the cars. This race isn’t fueled by gas or electronics-its just simple gravity as the racers compete against the clock. Racers must be between 4 and 5 feet tall, weigh between 55 and 120 pounds, and fit comfortably in the car (height and weight restrictions are due to the construction of the car). A maximum of 200 racers are accepted, so register early! The child must be present at the time of registration, no mail-in registrations accepted. The race takes place on Meyer Road in front of Progress Park. After AUG 21, the cost will be $10/13. Registrations will not be accepted SEP 6-10 due to facility closure. (Rainout date: SEP 18.)

Calling all kids ― put your capes on and suit up for an adventure! The Superhero Hustle is a one mile fun run full of crazy obstacles only a superhero could conquer! Watch out, you WILL get muddy as you race to the finish line.

There will be two heats: one for ages 9-13 at 9A and one for ages 4-8 at 9:30A. Registration opens at 8A. Come early to enjoy an inflatable obstacle course and visit with a special guest! Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero or create an identity of their own. Each child who participates will receive a participant shirt and finisher’s medal! A parent will be required to walk on the sidelines of the course near their children (ages 4-8) from start to finish. Participants will be briefed by a Y-kiki Divers staff member and provided with scuba gear. “Give Back” Swim Days

On JUN 14, guests can bring one nonperishable food item and get into Progress Park Pool for $2/per person or $4/per person at Splash Station Aquatic Center. Each guest must bring an item to receive the promotional rate.

Have you always wondered what lies beneath the surface? Now you can find out! Start the journey of a lifetime with the PADI Open Water Diver course. Your PADI Instructor will guide you through the basics of learning to scuba dive.

Prerequisites: Minimum age is 10 years old, a completed and signed Discover Scuba liability release form, and a medical questionnaire.

Online coursework and additional dives are required to complete certification. *JUN 14 session will meet at Progress Park Center at 7:30P. All other classes will meet at Progress Pool at 8:30P. Each session is two hours in length. Class runs for three weeks. (Min 4/Max 8)

The course encompasses three phases: knowledge development, confined water dives and open water training dives.

1. Knowledge Development (additional fee) – This develops your familiarity with basic diving principles and procedures. We will complete this phase with PADI eLearning, an online curriculum.

2. Confined Water Dives – Develop basic scuba skills in a pool. Over the course of these dives, you’ll attain the skills needed to dive in open water.

3. Open Water Training Dives (additional fee) – In this phase, you’ll have fun putting it all together and fully experience the underwater adventure – at the beginner level, of course. You may make these dives locally or at a more exotic destination on vacation with a referral. We’ll provide you with all the details in class.

River Walking (16+)

Deep Water Aerobics (16+)

If you are looking for less joint stress, an excellent cardiovascular workout and wonderful toning benefits, then river walking is for you. The class will be held in the 400-foot lazy river at Splash Station Aquatic Center.

Deep water aerobics offers a low-impact exercise for your joints, yet it has a high impact on your cardiovascular system. Flotation belts are available for support.

Advanced Aqua Aerobics offers a pace geared for a more strenuous cardiovascular workout while still taking advantage of the low impact benefits of water exercise. Strength training geared toward specific muscle groups will be included as well. Diving (16+)

The goal of the program is to offer instruction in the fundamentals of diving, while encouraging each athlete to develop their full potential.

You don’t need to make a trip to the beach to experience a yoga class with the splendor of floating on water. Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga takes yoga from the mat to the paddleboard, creating a unique and adventurous way to have fun and unwind. No experience is necessary, but must be comfortable in water. LEVELS SHRIMP

Level is intended to develop child’s comfort in and around water. Children will learn to be comfortable in water through many games, songs and help from both parents and the instructor. A parent must accompany the child in the pool. (Min 3/Max 10)

JELLYFISH

Level is intended to develop child’s comfort in/around water and prepare them for future instruction without a parent. Skills that will be mastered with assistance: blowing bubbles and kicking, and floating on back and swimming motions with parent support. Parent accompanies child in pool. (Min 3/Max 10)

SEA TURTLE

Level is intended to develop child’s comfort in and around water. Skills that will be mastered: front and back kick with instructor support, submerge head, feet first jump, entering and exiting pool without assistance. (Min 3/Max 5)

STINGRAY

This beginner level is intended to develop child’s comfort in and around water. Skills that will be mastered: front and back kick with instructor support, feet-first jump, submerge head, entering and exiting pool without assistance, and back float with instructor support. (Min 3/Max 5)

MARLIN

This level is for those who are comfortable in the water and are ready to learn more independent swimming. Skills that will be mastered: submerge head and face, front and back kick without support, basic front and back crawl. (Min 3/Max 6)

WALRUS

Level is intended to further develop strokes and start to build some basic technique and endurance. Skills that will be mastered: submerge head and face without hesitation, front crawl with rhythmic breathing, basic front and back crawl. This class may spend time in water 12-13 feet deep. This level is all about putting together all strokes and beginning to swim longer distances and master more advance skills. Skills that will be mastered: Front crawl with rotary breathing for 25 yards, back crawl for 25 yards, basic breast stroke, basic side stroke, elementary backstroke, dolphin kick, basic dive off side wall. A majority of this class will take place in water 12-13 feet deep. (Min 3/Max 7) This level is the highest we have and focuses almost entirely on technique and preparation for swim team or fitness swimming. Students in this level have learned and put together all strokes, but need futher assistance in perfecting them and swimming more efficiently. Skills that will be mastered: advancement in basic stroke skill, tread water for two minutes without using hands, retrieve brick from bottom of pool, flip turns, basic butterfly stroke, starts and entries. (Min 3/Max 7) Preregistration is required for all programs; and registration closes one week in advance.

Join us for our staff training, where children and swim instructors can learn together! Children will have a chance to try out our swim lesson program and instructors will get a chance to prepare for our program in the best way possible, through real teaching experience. When registering, parents must choose a level based on their child's skill. Children between 6 and 35 months must have a parent participate with them in the water. Includes one 40-minute class.

These leagues are designed for children of all abilities ― the league has two levels of play, depending on the skills of the team. Practices begin in July at the discretion of the coach. Games begin in August with eight games. Team registration will only be accepted. Uniforms will not be provided. The City does not provide coaches and relies upon dedicated volunteers to fill these positions. Head coaches and the assistant coach are all background checked. In celebration of International Friendship Day, you can help your child make their mark on the world through friendship and service! This day will focus on the power and importance of friendship and other elements that help a child be a good friend; laughter, kindness, honesty, loyalty, and generosity. These traits are key to building strong, caring, empathetic young people who are able to give to their friends and their communities.

Research suggests that the seeds of empathy, caring, and compassion are present early in life, but that children need the help of adults to grow into caring, ethical people. Volunteer service is a practical, easy, and fun way for you to help your child practice caring, giving and friendship and to teach them why it’s important to help others and how they can make a difference. In this ninety-minute program, the children will visit three different stations and make crafts which will in different ways give back to the community. At the end of the one-hour, we will come together to reflect on the projects and talk about how they will impact themselves, the recipients and their communities.
