A WARM WELCOME There’s a special glow that permeates the streets of Bethlehem during the holiday season. It could be the Moravian Star perched on South Mountain, catching the eyes and imaginations of passers-by. But more likely it’s the people. As citizens of the “Christmas City,” the locals take holiday cheer very, very seriously.

• DINING •
Experience it for yourself: the annual tree lighting, two impressive traditional German-style Christmas markets, and a even a Live (that’s right, live!) Advent Calendar make for a cheerpacked Christmas season. And then there’s Light Up Bethlehem—an annual door and window decorating contest—where competition and the Christmas spirit go hand-in-hand. (Don’t forget to vote for your favorite. The winner earns a cash prize to better his or her business in the new year.) All this in addition to a year-round mix of eclectic boutiques, international cuisine, prominent educational institutions, and a thriving arts community. There’s really something for everyone here, whether you’re in town for the day or are staying for a lifetime. Fig® is thrilled to be representing all of the good things the City of Bethlehem has to offer: diverse arts and culture, exceptional dining, unique shopping, authentic history, a thirst for learning, and a community that works together. This premiere issue of Fig® is just a preview of what’s to come. Look for Fig® in each season of the year to bring you the new and exciting and the tried and true of the City of Bethlehem. We’re honored to help give voice and vision to the great things that are happening in this amazing place. There are so many people we’ll meet, places we’ll visit, and stories we’ll tell. Join us on this journey, engage in your community, and get to know Bethlehem. Happy Holidays!

In History. In Progress. In a Great Place to Be. Bethlehem. Where to begin? How about Christmas Eve of 1741 when the city was officially named by a Moravian Count. Skip ahead nearly 200 years to 1937—Bethlehem was deemed “The Christmas City” in a rather brilliant move by the Chamber of Commerce, which convinced thousands of Chambers nationwide to route Christmas cards through Bethlehem for the official “Christmas City” cancellation, and the rest, as they say, is history. Prior to that, the industrial revolution brought more history to the region in the nearly century-long run of Bethlehem Steel led by the men and women who quite literally built America from sea to shining sea. With the closing of Bethlehem Steel and the passing of time, the community ultimately came together to revitalize the area, which is now home to the arts and entertainment campus known as SteelStacks, ArtsQuest, and the Sands Casino. A visually breathtaking sight, SteelStacks pays homage to “The Steel” with its original blast furnaces towering above the complex, expressively lit when the sky goes dark. Mayor John Callahan reflects on the iconic structures, saying, “The site is considered a symbol for the city. It doesn’t matter where you live, you see the SteelStacks and you think of home.” With a hometown feel in a cityscape by the river, Christmastime in the Christmas City brings a season of joy in Bethlehem, with great shopping and dining in the two downtowns, and countless festive events, including Christmas City Village—home to 35 decorated little wooden huts with gifts galore throughout the downtown district, and Christkindlmarkt, a true open-air market with unique handmade arts and crafts, hosted at SteelStacks. With plenty of retail adventures from boutiques to bookstores, slide in some dining destinations at one of the many restaurants—rich in cuisines from farm to
table, to gastropubs and cafes, to delectable ethnic foods to a great cup of coffee or cocktails at happy hour. After New Year’s, look for Restaurant Week in January just in time for a cozy winter pick-me-up with friends. Music dots the city in all seasons, bringing a dizzying number of offerings to SteelStacks with national, international, and local acts indoors and outdoors, including dozens of free summer concerts at the Levitt Pavilion, plus plenty of music next door at the Sands, and live music throughout both downtowns. The Celtic Classic is a fall favorite while Musikfest is the pinnacle summer music festival with 10 days of jazz, blues, rock, Latin rhythms, Celtic influences, folk and world music, and the beloved “Polka Stage,” a.k.a. Festplatz, a perennial favorite. Bethlehem has so much to offer—from a deep history in the Colonial Industrial Quarter, to a bright future in industry, manufacturing, and technology—all set in a creative backdrop of art and culture. Kara Johnson from the Downtown Bethlehem Association says, “It’s the combination that makes the city unique; the old paired with the new shows creativity, ambition, and imagination.” All of this is having a major impact on the next generation of Bethlehemers. For an old city, they’re pretty young, with 20- to 34-year-olds making up Bethlehem’s largest population group. Graduates from area colleges and universities are choosing to stay in the Valley. With an exciting nightlife, a fun day life, the college scene, the shopping, and countless restaurants and cafes, plus the surrounding countryside and proximity to New York and Philadelphia, the city has become a soughtafter place to live and visit for work and play. Sounds good to us.

SHOP LOCAL Dana DeVito in her own words
F
ig® believes in the power of shopping locally. We believe
that local retail keeps Bethlehem distinctive and unique, building a strong economy that helps everyone. Dana DeVito, General Manager of Moravian Book Shop & Gift Gallery, agrees. “Bethlehem is a treasure trove of shopping delights, with one-of-a-kind boutiques reflective of the true experience of enjoying a downtown. As the Christmas City and then some, Bethlehem has local ambience, local flavor and diversity, which is especially appealing as shoppers stroll in and out of the thresholds. With the renaissance of Bethlehem’s arts and culture scene, the vast shopping options bring it all together with the best in chic fashions, handmade art and craft,

jewelry galore, books, gifts, and that something special for that special someone. Shopping in Bethlehem is also a way for people to meet and gather, on their way to or from a great restaurant, café, or tavern. When the community and those visiting Bethlehem show their support and shop local, everyone thrives, and the uniqueness of both the downtown areas is preserved. Moravian Book Shop is the country’s oldest bookshop (est. 1745). We know our customers. All our buying is done here. We employ local people and use local businesses to maintain ours, keeping those people employed as well. To shop downtown is to invest in your neighbors and neighborhoods.”

bethlehem food
FRESH IS BEST Fig® pulls up a chair to Bethlehem’s table with Molinari’s own Anna Darwin
fresh local food. Food not only
gathers us around tables for meals,
but also in the marketplace as we seek the freshest, best, and most local ingredients. anna Darwin, restaurant and marketing manager at Molinari’s restaurant, agrees. “Food is a source of energy and a source of enjoyment. The value of dining locally goes beyond the delicious food on the table. It helps support local farming, and the broader local economy, significant to the region in and around Bethlehem. When food is sourced on a local level, everyone benefits. Menus may change with the seasons, due to the freshness
and availability of certain ingredients and so that guests may be guaranteed that they will be eating the freshest produce available. Supporting local and independent establishments also brings the distinctive warmth of home right to the table. The people who own these businesses are your neighbors, your friends, your family. They know your name, your kids’ names, where you went on vacation, and always offer a warm ‘How are you?’ whether they’re passing by in the grocery store or stopping at your table while you’re eating dinner. A town is a community. By supporting local, you’re supporting your family’s economic, emotional, and physical wellbeing. Chef Michael Joyce tries his very best to obtain as many local, seasonal ingredients as possible, so our food is guaranteed to be fresh, flavorful, and delicious. I feel as though all of those things combined speak for themselves as to why one should choose to support local entrepreneurs.”

THE BroadWay SoCiaL The Broadway Social. A fitting name for a new restaurant that is already wowing the crowds. With a long and successful family history in the restaurant biz, that’s exactly what owner Greg Salomoni wanted for this upscale yet casual varietal venue that easily transitions from a business lunch to happy hour to a romantic dinner to a nightclub. The setting is a renovated firehouse with an inviting atmosphere for, you guessed it, socializing. Greg sought out head chef Marcus Morin, whose menu satisfies foodies looking for the finest in gastronomical fare and bottle service, to locals looking for the best NY strip steak (dare we mention accompanied by cognac drunken wild mushrooms), a variety of craft-beer choices, and a great place to watch the Sunday game. A social gathering place with a spirited drink menu, noted mixologist Melissa Lozada brings 25 years of experience to the bar, concocting quite the recipe collection with her own flavored whiskeys and vodkas. Heard of “farm to table”? How about “farm to bar”—specialty drinks made with her own unique blend of herbs and spices. Try thirst-inducing enticements like The Social Mojito, Piña Caliente, We Got the Beet, or the Bacon Maple Bourbon, described as “Not for the timid; bacon-infused Jefferson bourbon, maple syrup, orange essence.” Wow!
Greg Salomoni Owner of The Broadway Social
The nightlife brings a DJ and dancing, with live musicians accenting the club music, from a sax player to a violinist sitting in. Check out the upstairs for private parties. Catering is available both on and off site. Greg plans to bring in live bands and a late-night menu in the near future, so stay tuned, stay a while, and stay social, at The Broadway Social.

authentic Fig® recognizes the everyday unsung heroes who contribute to the unique texture of Bethlehem DINA HALL: AUTHENTICITY PERSONIFIED For Dina Hall, authenticity is a way of life. A spirited and busy woman steeped in community, Dina is a graphic designer, singer/ songwriter, and co-owner of The Backdoor Bakeshop with her partner, Gail Lehman. She is a force for good, known for following through with actions and words. Pursuing her music in the late ‘90s, Dina founded Bethlehem’s legendary folk club, Godfrey Daniels. A pivotal open-mic night would define the next chapter of her life as a professional musician. She became an integral part of the Godfrey Daniels family, all the way to currently being the first woman president of the board. Managing Director Ramona LaBarre shares, “Dina brings her vibrant creative spirit, passion, and commitment to Godfrey Daniels. We deeply appreciate her distinguishable visibility in the community and her positive impact in representing Godfrey’s wherever she goes.” Whether performing in a benefit concert, running the café, attending board meetings, donating food to Trinity Soup Kitchen, donating music proceeds to Turning Point Domestic Violence Organization, or hosting a radio show on WDIY (yeah, she does that, too), Dina is grateful to have the neighborhood behind her. “Bethlehem has supported us,” she says. “They’ve accepted and celebrated us and our business beyond what we could have imagined.” So how does she do it all? When it’s your passion, you find a way. Dina’s nature is to do something first rather than wait for someone else—a life philosophy instilled by her parents. Part of the fabric of Bethlehem, she loves helping the city grow in a positive way. “I pick up trash when I walk down the street”, she says. “I’m that person. It’s my home. I care about it.” That’s authenticity. That’s Dina Hall.

doing more together
At Fig® we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of Touchstone Theatre—a local not-for-profit that makes a difference by offering opportunities for enrichment and education to strengthen the fabric of the city of Bethehem. DONATE. VOLUNTEER. GET INVOLVED. AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY Touchstone. A fitting name for this small but mighty theater. Reaching their arms into the community both literally and figuratively, Touchstone believes in bringing theater to the people and people to the theater. They’ve done so for more then 30 years in and around their intimate 75-seat theater, renovated from an abandoned 19th-century firehouse on Bethlehem’s South Side. Evidenced by successful productions mirroring local culture, their mission is clear. With a core resident ensemble of theater artists, the professional not-forprofit theater presents original works and captivates audiences. Artistic Director James P. Jordan remarks, “Touchstone isn’t a theater; it’s an idea, that we’re all creative beings and through art, we can say something meaningful and perhaps transform our lives and our community in the process.” From the whimsical to the serious, Touchstone brings cultural consciousness to all who attend, from the ever-popular “Christmas City Follies,” to the poignant “Steelbound,” a tribute to the local steel industry. Other productions have included “Don Quixote of Bethlehem,” inspired by Bethlehem’s diverse South Side, with 100 participants in a traveling street performance; “Another River Flows,” based on oral histories collected from the Lehigh Valley’s oldest African-American citizens; and “A Resting Place,” in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Coming soon is “Journey from the East,” stories of the Chinese journey to Bethlehem with traditional Chinese folklore in a large-scale outdoor production. Education is paramount at Touchstone and fills the gaps where school arts programs have been cut, building confidence, acting skills, and literacy through The Young Playwrights’ Lab, Camp Touchstone, and the Teen Ensemble. Get involved at Touchstone. Volunteer. Donate. Become a member. Mostly, go see a show and experience for yourself the magic of a living theater.

beverly bradley, cops ‘n’ kids
THE ZEST and THE ZEaL For WHaT MaTTErS. From the moment you meet Beverly Bradley, you get it. Her passion and enthusiasm are simply dazzling. What could be better than a retired teacher bringing her love of books and children together? Possibly the knowledge that through good works, lives are changed. Beverly has been at the helm of the wildly successful Cops ‘n’ Kids program from the beginning. Originally started by a policewoman in Wisconsin to provide books for children in need and improve relationships between inner-city kids and

police, Beverly expanded that to the wider community. Are you sitting down? Her original goal was to distribute 1,000 books, but in ten years, Beverly and her army of volunteers have distributed more than half a million books to kids locally, nationally, and internationally. Though putting in 80-hour work weeks, Beverly is the very model of humble. “I never anticipated these numbers,” she says. “It evolved as beautifully as it was meant to; I’m just there as the hub for all of this goodness. We’re using literacy as the conduit to save the lives of our children—and to ultimately change the landscape and the future of our community.”

Twitter & instagram @figbethlehem
Every time Beverly puts a book into a child’s hand, she truly feels like it is a catalyst to change a life. Raised by a single mom in a housing project in Bethlehem, Beverly was a child of poverty herself, but her mother was rich in wisdom. She taught Beverly that she mattered, no matter how poor they were, and that education was the key to changing lives. There is no stopping Beverly Bradley, and she is as enchanting as the books she distributes. With her momentum and motivation, she continues to move mountains—mountains of books, that is. Read on, Beverly! Want to get involved? Learn more at copsnkidslv.org.

can transform the way people view a city—for good. Jeffrey a. Parks, president of artsQuest, agrees. “The arts are central to the character of Bethlehem since its founding by Moravians in 1741. From the Bethlehem Area School District to the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, to private organizations like the Lesson Center and YOUniversity of Music and Arts, young people in Bethlehem have opportunities for access to the arts that are rare in most communities.”

OUR ROOTS Charlene Donchez Mowers, President of Historic Bethlehem Museums and Sites, in her own words
F
ig® believes in the power of history—that understanding
where we’re from is part of knowing where we’re heading. Charlene
Donchez Mowers, president of the Historic Bethlehem Museums and Sites, agrees with the importance of looking back in order to move forward. “To talk about history in Bethlehem is to talk about the building and engineering of this country, with America’s earliest ‘industrial park’ in the Colonial Industrial Quarter. From the 1762 Waterworks being the first pumped municipal water system in America to the Industrial Revolution and the Bethlehem Steel Corporation—history is told through National Historic Landmarks as well as people passing stories from generation to generation to hold dear the significance of preserving experiences.

From the earliest days of our founding by the Moravians, Bethlehem has been a melting pot of diversity, and equal education for both boys and girls has always been of paramount importance. In 1742, the Moravians founded the first school in the colonies to educate girls, two months before the boys’ school was opened. Transportation routes coming through Bethlehem from the earliest American Indian Minsi Trail all the way to the building of the railroads in the mid-1800s made the city accessible, which allowed for the commerce and economy to expand and grow with the city. Music was considered an important component of life on the frontier and that tradition continues today, creating another bridge from the past to the future.”

Live Advent Calendar December 1 – 23 A well-known, one-of-a-kind event that Bethlehem loves this time of year is the Live Advent Calendar. Every night from December 1 – 23 at the Goundie House on Main Street, a business presents a live act for a group of close to 300 people. A child from the crowd is asked to knock on the door promptly at 5:30 PM, and a live performance will pop out of the door! Just like the Advent calendars you enjoyed as a child, these nightly treats are our way of counting down the days until Christmas in Bethlehem. Each night, the crowd will receive a small gift or treat. Look for the Fig® team on December 10!

pennsylvania we asked & You sang bethlehem’s praises
“I love the historical aspect of Bethlehem. I love Main Street with its 18th Century architecture. I love that our town has a story and a history.” – Anna Darwin, Molinari’s Restaurant
“what i love about the City of bethlehem is that it has so much to offer to any enthusiast of art and music, and has had these offerings for decades. it is no surprise that our fair city has evolved into a destination for all things music and culture, with the wide variety of selections from theater and museums, to arts centers and annual festivals, galleries and music halls —all of which celebrate the rich history and heritage of the people who settled the area: moravians, scottish, irish, germans and others.” – Ramona LaBarre, Godfrey Daniels
“i grew up in the lehigh Valley and graduated from lehigh during bethlehem steel’s rapid decline, and i love how visitors to our office at ben Franklin are surprised by the vibrancy of the city and that it’s not some shuttered and abandoned industrial ghost town.” – Wayne Barz, Ben Franklin TechVentures
“great area, great people, and lots to do. it’s a great place to live. bethlehem is awesome!” – Chaz Patrick, Molly’s Irish Grille & Sports Bar
“when a community cares about its children, it cares about its future— and bethlehem residents have demonstrated their commitment to children throughout the lehigh Valley and beyond by their willingness to become a part of our Cops ‘n’ kids Children’s literacy program. all that we are, and all that we have been able to accomplish, has come about because of the thousands of thoughtful individuals of all ages and all walks of life who have stepped forward to join us in our mission of ‘connecting kids and community through literacy.’ how appropriate it is that all of our good work emanates from this lovely city.” – Beverly Bradley, Cops ‘n’ Kids Children’s Literacy Program
“From my office I can see the old blast furnaces of the steel stacks, the steeples of a dozen Southside churches, and the SteelStacks performance venues. This is a city with history, diversity, and amazing culture. I love this town.” – Paul Pierpoint, Southside Center
“i love bethlehem because it is constantly evolving and still maintains the charm of a mature city. the transformation of the south side is energizing and exciting, yet i remain mesmerized by the peacefulness of a walk through the historic north side.”
“Bethlehem simultaneously embraces a rich past and bright future. Every day there is news of a ribbon-cutting, a groundbreaking, a community leader giving back. Bethlehem is not just a City—it’s a group of people, working to create a better place to live, work, and play.” – Kara Johnson, Manager of the Downtown Bethlehem Association
“I love living in Historic Bethlehem! The people are so warm and the walkability to everything—the museums, the shops and restaurants helped to seal my decision to live here.” – Kelly Ronalds, Historic Hotel Bethlehem
“what i love about bethlehem is its rich history, its residents, and its business community. in our own quiet way, we’ve led the nation during the Colonial times, during the industrial revolution, through the great world wars, and again, today, in showcasing a new mid-size urban america—an urban america founded on great neighborhoods, a strong community, good schools, a diverse economy, a rich history, an appreciation for arts and culture, and attractive downtowns. in short, a great quality of life built upon a solid way of life. bethlehem has become the benchmark for livable urban communities, where people can live, work and play all in walking distance.” – Mayor John Callahan
