A RICH HISTORY AWAITS US Recently named as a National Historic Landmark District, Bethlehem is a historian’s dream. In a single day, you can visit the Moravian Archives to see beautiful manuscripts dating back to the early 1700s, step back in time at the Smithy Complex to watch a highly skilled craftsman demonstrate blacksmithing as it used to be, and take a tour of Bethlehem’s Steel Stacks, where the original Bethlehem Steel blast furnaces stand tall for all to appreciate. From colonial to industrial and beyond, Bethlehem is a historical destination all around. Whether you’re a visitor or call Bethlehem home, take a walking tour of town with “Historic Bethlehem” to experience the city in a whole new way. Dine at the most delicious restaurants and shop locally at the many wonderful boutiques on both sides of the river. Stay a while and treat yourself to a weekend at the Sayre Mansion or the Historic Hotel Bethlehem, both registered with the Historic Hotels of America. As the past greets the future, with stops in between, Bethlehem is a city worth knowing and a city worth remembering, every step of the way. Janine Carroll, Managing Editor

STEEL BEAM

FRESH FACE

the steel beam THE FACE OF FASHION

When Fay Fitch returned home to the Lehigh Valley, she brought her talent and creativity with her. To the delight of fashionistas near and far, she recently opened The Steel Beam with its name paying tribute to Bethlehem’s history and architecture. It is the place to shop for high-end designer fashions and accessories for men and women at affordable prices. Growing up in Bethlehem, Fay journeyed to New York City to study fashion at Parson’s School of Design. She worked for high-end designers in the big city for 25 years, and then brought it all back to Main Street, Bethlehem. Fay’s customers benefit as the shop is filled with unique one of a kind showroom and production samples that you won’t find elsewhere. Garnering strong relationships with design houses over the years, Fay heads to New York often to select unique designs, always keeping her clientele in mind. “My customers appreciate fine detail,” she says. “I like to find pieces that are classic, yet fresh, with a lasting appeal.” Fay brings a contemporary approach to boutique retail shopping and treats the space much like an art gallery, filled with creative artistry and an architectural aesthetic. Clothing styles range from comfortable casual chic to special occasion, with treasures from 50% - 85% off their original value. There is a small line of bridal accessories, jewelry, handbags, shoes and original clothing designs. Fay has many plans and sees The Steel Beam as a creative center with a gallery feel. Look for specialty t-shirts from Martin Guitar, on-site custom alterations and all kinds of in-store events involving learning workshops and fundraising benefits. The Steel Beam is casual to couture culture for a creative community. All that and more, right in the heart of downtown.

Bethlehem Steel had such an impact during the rise of the industrial age, and moving on to the 21st century, Bethlehem continues to be very diverse, combining historic preservation, economic vitality, and a vibrant arts and culture scene, plus the growing technology sector in a community of 75,000 people.” The great part today is that you can visit the history and see for yourself. Take the Colonial Industrial Quarter tour, or the Art and Architecture Tour, or The Rise and Fall of Bethlehem Steel tour, and many others. Take the time to see, even if you think you’ve seen it all. Chances are, there’s more to explore, right here, right next door.

SOCIAL MISSION 14

At Fig®, we believe in the power of creative thinking to transform a community. We believe in the mission of Touchstone Theatre—a local notfor-profit that makes a difference by offering opportunities for enrichment and education to strengthen the fabric of the City of Bethlehem. Beginning in the fall of 2013 and running through the spring of 2015, Touchstone has begun its latest community-based project, a twoyear initiative titled Journey From

321 East 4th Street 610.867.1689 touchstone.org

the East. Initially inspired by the influx of Chinese tourists coming in from New York City to the Sands Casino, the focus has since expanded to include stories from the Lehigh Valley’s local Chinese residents— from restaurants, public parks, schools, churches, and more. This April, Touchstone presents Journey: Dream of the Red Pavilion, the first of two productions in the Journey From the East project. The production explores the kaleidoscope of trials and triumphs of the Chinese experience in the Lehigh Valley.

AUTHENTIC

Paul Peucker

PAUL PEUCKER KNOWS A LOT about

Moravian history. So much so, he was tapped to be head archivist for the Moravian Archives ten years ago straight from his job of the same name in Germany. One could say Paul has had a lifelong passion for Moravian history, growing up in the Netherlands, hearing stories in an old Moravian community. And what could be better than that for the future preservation of this important archive? Even his Ph.D. dissertation was all about an early Moravian settlement. Paul always thought he’d be a history teacher, and now he helps

24

preserve history for centuries to come. Near and dear to his heart, Paul’s enthusiasm for the subject matter doesn’t stop at the end of the day, as he spends hours of his spare time writing about Moravian history and is about to have a new book published. “I was interested in coming to Bethlehem,” says Paul, “because as an archivist, this was a really good opportunity to take the Moravian Archives into the 21st century, using modern technology to bring the history to the public.” Amazed by the collection and perhaps feeling like a kid in a candy store, Paul saw the forest

“…as an archivist, this was a really good opportunity to take the Moravian Archives into the 21st century, using modern technology to bring the history to the public.”

for the trees, knowing how much more impact the collection could have once it became more digitally accessible. “It’s a center where people come to learn the history,” Paul says. “The Moravian Archives holds the earliest history of this area. The Moravians were really good record keepers, and kept detailed information about life here in the 1700s.” In a 21st-century way, Paul is doing very much the same work: preserving the past and making it relevant for the present so that the future will live on.

At Brownstone Design, we pay tribute to the history and tradition of interior design—a rich history that reaches back from 1878, when the first semi-annual furniture market was held in Grand Rapids Michigan, to 1974, when the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) was formed, establishing Interior Design as a school and developing a national interior design qualification exam. Now in 2014, Brownstone Design marks their 20th anniversary. As we celebrate this great achievement, we want to say thank you for letting us into your lives and trusting us with your home. GIVING BACK Tiffany Till

getting involved. it’s what she does.

What do you get when you cross a passion for helping others, a social butterfly, and a robust website? You get involved. You get to attend fun events. You get GetInvolvedLV.com. Get Involved Lehigh Valley is the brainchild of Tiffany Till, a woman who was driven to take a simple idea and have it impact the community in a big way. After attending many charity events over the years, she discovered a cause of her own: a fun social calendar website, listing charity events throughout the

Lehigh Valley. Tiffany walks the walk with the website, meeting with charities, researching events, and volunteering on committees and boards like the Red Cross, Angel34, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. As a March of Dimes co-chair, she helped double the goal for a fundraiser to more than $100,000. As the event chair for 2014, she hopes to double it again. If anyone can do it, Tiffany can. “It’s what I like to do. This is my full-time job,” she says. Her work has purpose and there is purpose in her work. Her idea was born from an inspiring event in honor of a breast cancer survivor. Tiffany wouldn’t have known about

the event if not for a friend telling her, and she realized a website could be a great way to find new supporters and volunteers. She was right. “Charity events are fun to go to, and it’s fun to get involved and help people,” says Tiffany. “It’s a good feeling when you do something for other people; it’s something I think everybody should do, and everybody can do. It’s a wonderful community. Everybody helps everybody.” Tiffany saw a need. She knew she could help. So she did. And so can you. Get involved Lehigh Valley. You’ll be glad you did.

Sands Bethlehem recognizes the future while protecting the past

WHEN SANDS BETHLEHEM was newly constructed,

there was a keen focus on paying respect to Bethlehem Steel within the industrial-themed complex. From the groundbreaking, it was paramount to honor the hard work of the former employees of “The Steel” and preserve the legacy of this hallowed site. Recognizing its unparalleled impact and place in the history books of the industrial age, Sands Bethlehem has been steadily committed to preserving the buildings of Bethlehem Steel, whose thousands of workers played an imperative role in the development of America’s steel and defense industries in the modern 20th century. From battleships to bridges, from skyscrapers to railroads, that’s history worth saving. “It was very important for Sands Bethlehem to incorporate the history of “At times it’s as if I can Bethlehem Steel while creating still hear the voices of an integrated destination the men that worked resort,” says there. I’ve spent so much Sands President Robert DeSalvio. time here and watched it “There is artwork from the evolve, like the phoenix former offices of Bethlehem Steel rising. Hopefully it throughout the holds onto enough of property, and landmarks like the history so people the Ore Bridge and the Hoovercan appreciate the Mason Trestle that are being tremendous past here, maintained as a salute to the both in structure and great piece of in stories.” American history that occurred here.” With the future at the doorstep, Sands Bethlehem continues the journey forward, while steadfastly honoring the past. One building at a time, it is playing a major role in preserving sections of the property, including the blast furnaces and the upcoming preservation of the #2 Machine Shop, at one point the longest industrial

buildings in the world. The core site rests on 125 acres, encompassing about 20 buildings dating back as early as 1863. The Hoover-Mason Trestle—which in its day traveled back and forth delivering products between the ore field and the blast furnaces—is being converted into a pedestrian walkway and interactive history tour. Led by the Bethlehem Redevelopment Authority, the muchanticipated trestle will provide a unique perspective to get a closer view of the blast furnaces and learn about the complex Bethlehem Steel plant operations. But there’s more inside the perimeter of this complex than meets the eye. Meet Joe Koch, safety manager and so much more. Joe knows a thing or two about safety on the property he’s been walking since 1965, when he first worked at Bethlehem Steel. His clever steelworker father thought the best way to keep his son in college was to expose him to the “dirty steel mill.” It worked. For a while. Joe became a science teacher but returned to Bethlehem Steel following the teachers strike, and stayed beyond the end, all the way to the present day of Sands Bethlehem. “I could probably talk about this site all day,” says Joe. “There’s a lot of history here, and I’ve had a unique perspective from when it was a city within a city, with 15,000 employees at ‘The Steel’. My work hasn’t really changed; it’s the same interesting concoction of jobs. Without The Sands providing the engine needed to get the site back into productivity, I wouldn’t be here, and I don’t think this site would be what it is today.” Joe adds, “At times it’s as if I can still hear the voices of the men that worked there. I’ve spent so much time here and watched it evolve, like the phoenix rising. Hopefully it holds onto enough of the history so people can appreciate the tremendous past here, both in structure and in stories.” Well said, Joe, well said. And thanks to the addition of the Steelworker’s Archives, housed at Sands Bethlehem and open to visitors and former Steel employees alike, Joe will likely get his wish.
