home for the
holidays oh what fun we’ve had in the christmas city this year.
Since the launch of our first issue one year ago, we have enjoyed sharing all of the wonderful events, shopping, dining, and attractions that the City of Bethlehem has to offer. From famous Musikfest to the Celtic Classic, to Christkindlmarkt and the Christmas City Village, Bethlehem is a city that celebrates passionately and often. We couldn’t be happier to be a part of this inspiring community. We thank the business owners who have opened their doors to us so that we can share their stories, and showcase their wonderful style, service, and products. We thank our team of bloggers for sharing Bethlehem through their own eyes. And, we thank all of you for reading Fig® Bethlehem, following our adventures through social media, and supporting local businesses and organizations. It is with great pleasure that we bring you this year’s holiday issue filled with great dining destinations, fabulous fashion, and entertainment to excite all ages. This holiday season, we encourage you to shop locally, remembering the very businesses that make our city a great place to live, and a great place to visit.

authentic:
andy vasquez
just like nobody compares to the magic-
realism that brings the page to life like Gabriel Garcia-Marquez or the landscapes of the southwest like Georgia O’Keeffe, the carpentry of Bethlehem resident and artist Andy Vasquez has its own signature vibe, as well. Heavily into the skateboarding scene while growing up, Andy began to take an interest in drawing and painting skateboard graphics. He then advanced to creating three-dimensional sculptures and furniture making as he appreciated being able to move around and create energetically, much like the art of skating itself.
After studying Art Education and Furniture Design at Kutztown University, Andy took an internship in the Netherlands with the highly experimental designer Nacho Carbonell. While abroad, Andy noticed a movement happening in furniture design: “a cleaner aesthetic with a clearer ethos.” Product photos: Max Zahradnik
6 figbethlehem.com
Andy Vasquez Furniture is simple, functional, reclaimed, and made from sustainable materials. His history of skating comes out beautifully with the soft curves he uses to craft anything from wall planters to Pennsylvania-themed cutting boards to sleek coffee tables. A signature counter he custom built for Liven Up Fitness in town was made from old wooden bleachers and has the smoothness of a skater’s half-pipe. Andy keeps his passion for the skate culture alive with a nonprofit project where he creates curved parking blocks and drops them off at various skate parks in different cities to give the local skaters a new gift. Andy describes his furniture as, “a balance of functional and beautiful, getting better with each use and gaining more character over the course of time.” This philosphy carries through each of his unique and inspiring designs. You can find some of his work at The Steel Beam, Loose Threads Boutique, or Bethlehem House Gallery, or contact him directly at andyvasquezfurniture.com to have a piece custom designed.

at home bethlehem is truly the christmas city.
Whether you’re strolling past historic landmarks adorned with holiday wreaths, admiring the soft glow of miniature lighted pine trees on traffic lights, listening to carolers singing in the distance, or smiling at the sound of Clydesdale hooves hitting cobblestones during a carriage ride, it is clear that “O Little Town of Bethlehem” is illuminated with charm and personality. There is always something and someone unique to be found here. We are thankful for the local business owners who devote themselves to uplifting the city year round. Their spirit of entrepreneurship is the character and texture that is woven into the foundation of the city. We are thrilled to bring you some standouts this holiday season within these pages. Use Fig® to explore the streets for unique finds and holiday treats, and to experience festive events. There are traditions to be made and treasures to be found within the historic buildings and in the streets of Bethlehem. Remember to support the generous and original spirit of the season. Let’s work together to celebrate Bethlehem’s authentic history, exceptional dining, and diverse art and culture. This season the Bethlehem star lights the way. Let it be your guide to continue to brighten not only the season, but the spirit that keeps our community alive and shining.

Meet people who inspire and give back to our thriving city. Look for Fig® Giving Back in every issue. Pictured: Officer Jason Holschwander and Raven. giving back:
mounted police
in the early 1900s, hooves of the Bethlehem Mounted Police could be heard clopping down the city’s cobblestone streets. After a hiatus of more than 60 years, the unit was restored and returned to downtown Bethlehem. Reining the city again since 2009, the Bethlehem Mounted Police serves as a daily reminder of the rich history and character ingrained in Bethlehem. A hardy team of six (Michael Leaser with mount George, Officer Jason Holschwander with mount Raven, and officer Jon Buskirk with mount Pharaoh), the officers start their day in the stables before they hop into the saddle. Feeding, grooming, and caring for the horses is a day’s worth of work itself. But once the horses are ready, the unit hits the streets to attend daily dismissal at Liberty High School and other Bethlehem special events, including walk-a-thons, local festivals, and groundbreaking ceremonies.
14 figbethlehem.com
Community outreach plays a large role in the daily duties of a mounted officer. When the officer and his mount stroll Bethlehem’s historic streets, they are often greeted by admiring onlookers. Both adults and children alike are awed by the horses’ towering beauty and power. But never be wary, the horses are as humble as they are powerful and are always looking to make a new friend. Whether it’s directions or dining suggestions, the Mounted Police serve as gracious representatives of our city. As a nonprofit organization, they are supported by your generosity. The officers and their horses provide the people of Bethlehem with a unique experience while building a sense of community. They protect and serve our city with a little extra care and concern for our vibrant downtown. This season, let’s show them just how thankful we are by donating to these goodwill ambassadors who make Bethlehem a better and safer place to shop, work, and live locally.

Read Together supporting education in our local community For the first time in more than a decade, the entire school district lost their federal funding for afterschool programs for students. It’s no question that urban schools need extra support to give each child the tools and experiences necessary to be successful—ones that extend outside the classroom and help students grow academically, socially, creatively, and independently. It was about six years ago when Sonia Vazquez became principal of Donegan Elementary School in Bethlehem. She saw the great possibilities that could take place for the school and with perseverance and motivation, Sonia was able to tap into the community and gain much-needed support to carry out her vision. One of the businesses that stepped up for the school was Sands Bethlehem. About four years ago, Sands Bethlehem adopted Donegan Elementary and supplied it with volunteers and mentors who conduct homework clubs, family nights, afterschool programs, athletics, busses for field trips, and meals, including breakfast and lunch for their 6-week summer school program. Donegan is now considered a community school, meaning everyone in the community works together with the main mission of increasing the literacy and bettering the lives of children through recreation, health, sound minds, and empowering skills that extend from child to family members, and in turn, back to the community. Within just three months of Donegan being a community school, student and parent participation skyrocketed, athletics exploded, and involvement in every aspect increased—but what Sonia didn’t expect was to see how the tutors and mentors were positively affected by helping the children just as the children were affected by their help. The next big event Sands Bethlehem will be helping out with and supplying volunteers for is Monday, March 2, 2015, for Read Across America Day—a nationwide Dr. Seuss reading celebration.
Sands Bethlehem has a partnership with Donegan Elementary, and Sands employees volunteer throughout the year.

and the Bethlehem Redevelopment Authority, following the success of WRT’s new SteelStacks campus and Levitt Pavilion, are moving forward with the next exciting development of the former Bethlehem Steel site: to redevelop and revitalize the historically significant Hoover-Mason Trestle. The goal of the adaptive reuse effort is to use the existing trestle structure by creating connectivity through creation of a pedestrian-oriented promenade, supporting circulation, historic interpretation, and passive recreation uses.
The Hoover-Mason Trestle was identified as a significant resource for pedestrian connectivity by a panel of experts at a design forum sponsored by the American Architectural Foundation. In its heyday, the trestle was used to carry ore cars from the Ore Yard area—currently the site of the Sands Bethlehem Casino Resort—to the blast furnaces. It was part of an overhead material conveyance system that, for the most part, still exists. The project area includes the entire length of the Trestle—2,000 feet— which currently extends from the recently completed Visitor Center at the Stock House
to the entrance of the Sands Bethlehem hotel. WRT first completed the Concept and Engineering Study to move this project into reality. The trestle, named for the New York engineering firm that designed it, was commissioned in 1905 under the leadership of Charles Schwab, the company’s first chairman. The project is currently under construction, managed by Boyle Construction with a projected opening date of Spring 2015.
