GOOD

THINKING THIS SEASON, WE’RE EXCITED TO DISCOVER Bethlehem’s bright ideas for innovation. In a city that uses its rich history to propel it forward, we’re inspired by your suggestions and insights about what matters most—and where to find the sparks of creativity at work.

In our second year of showcasing the best of shopping, dining, arts, and entertainment in the city of Bethlehem, we aim to ignite a passion for what’s new, what you love, and what the future holds. In this issue you’ll find out what locals and leaders enjoy most and what they hope to see next. On the following pages, find entrepreneurs with a passion for locally made goods, educators who are thinking one step ahead, artisans using imaginative reuse to create art, and developers and designers leading historic preservation at its finest. This spring, may you be guided by the illumination of ingenuity of a season that’s all about change, growth, and a renewed sense of possibility. We believe that ideas rather than circumstances will guide the future of Bethlehem—and recognize that human history is, indeed, a history of ideas. Here’s to your next bright idea! With appreciation, Deborah Brandt Meet the entire creative and talented team that makes Fig® possible at figbethlehem.com.

“ A steel core is more than a strong center; it’s about withstanding instability and imbalance in your life.” Marisa Cerveris in her workspace.

authentic:

MARISA CERVERIS OF STEELCORE

marisa cerveris wanted a new name

for her budding clothing business that reflected her key values of originality, durability, and community. Inspiration came one morning while walking along the towpath of the Little Lehigh near her home. Looming large in the distance was the recently repurposed Bethlehem Steel plant. “You can see the blast furnaces of SteelStacks through the trees with an American Flag flying over it,” Marisa told me. “I took a picture and immediately sent it to my brother, who came up with the tagline ‘strength comes from within.’” 4 figbethlehem.com

®

With that, Marisa, a former New York City Ballet dancer, decided to name her lines of dance, fitness, and lifestyle clothing SteelCore®. “A steel core is more than a strong center; it’s about withstanding instability and imbalance in your life.” Bethlehem’s manufacturing industry was undergoing that kind of instability when Marisa started her business. Vital equipment was sent overseas, and local skilled craftsmen had no work. Known for going all-in with everything she does, Marisa began to impart a much needed sense of

mission to both key industry leaders and underappreciated, underused artisan labor. For Marisa, SteelCore® is more than a clothing enterprise, it’s a philosophy she wants to share with her community. “Being a successful professional dancer required strength, stamina, faith and courage. No one can teach you that; you have to find that on your own.” Marisa’s successful labor of love reveals that strength does indeed come from within, and it’s hand-crafted, American-made, and Bethlehem strong. v

INNOVATION IS A CURIOUS PHENOMENON.

What makes it so peculiar is that no one knows when inspiration will strike or where new ideas really come from. But in our increasingly fastpaced world, the need for innovation has never been greater. Fortunately, two Bethlehem schools have become paragons of innovation, enabling students to hit the ground running when they graduate.

moravian college, tracing its

roots to 1742, was inspired by one of the “founding fathers” of modern education, John Amos Comenius, who wrote: “Not the children of the rich or of the powerful only, but of all alike, boys and girls, both noble and ignoble, rich and poor, in all cities and towns, villages and hamlets, should be sent to school.” The idea of universal education was groundbreaking at that time. Today Moravian continues that tradition of innovation by going to an All-MacBook Pro and iPad campus in 2013. “By providing new students with a MacBook Pro and an iPad that will be covered by their tuition, the College will, in effect, be providing all students with equal access to technology,” says Scott Hughes, Chief Information Officer at Moravian. The Apple platform was chosen because it can run iOS, Windows, and Linux, so students can utilize the one that’s best for their discipline. The wireless initiative was named Innovation Project of the Year by Alcatel-Lucent. “This initiative will benefit our students by enabling them to better understand

Photos provided by Lehigh University & Moravian College.

and effectively utilize information technology to gain the knowledge necessary for 21st century careers,” Moravian president Bryon Grigsby said. “All Moravian students will be uniquely prepared for the careers they choose— even those that have not yet been created—by learning the technological skills they’ll need in the modern workforce.” While Moravian is leveraging cuttingedge technology to transform the way students learn and professors teach, lehigh university is encouraging its students to recognize themselves as innovators. “Our perspective on entrepreneurship is about the way people think, not just related to whether or not they start companies,” notes Lisa Getzler, Co-Executive Director of Lehigh’s Baker Institute for Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Innovation. Lehigh’s Baker Institute is the latest iteration along a continuum that began twenty-one years ago with their Integrated Product Development program. Its role is to support entrepreneurial thinking across all disciplines.

Lehigh University achieves this goal through programs like the Eureka! Ventures Competition Series, which is a way for students to recognize that what they're doing in any discipline might be an imaginative project to pursue, and the Mountaintop Initiative, which provides a unique learning environment where students are given the freedom to explore answers to open-ended questions while working in, and across, all disciplines. “When students are deeply engaged and recognize themselves as potential solvers of a problem,” says Getzler, “and that they can create value for other people and the world, it changes them.” The word "innovate" comes from the Latin innovatus, which means "to make changes in something established." Both Moravian College and Lehigh University are drawing on their renowned histories of ingenuity and helping change both their students and the world for better.

The Butz family has a long and successful tradition of building in the Lehigh Valley that dates back to the mid-1800s when the family constructed covered bridges. Butz is proud to be the recipient of many prestigious Top General Contractor awards for excellence.

The Chabad House

imagination is at the heart of innovation—an appreciation

for the past and a vision for the future. That’s the case with Lehigh University’s Rohr’s Jewish Student Center. Rabbi Zalman Greenberg imagined having a space that fostered education, fellowship, and community. When the historic 10,000-square-foot mansion, built in the 1860s, became available, the Rohr Family Foundation helped fund that dream. David Hausman of David Hausman Designs and Michael Weber of Alvin H. Butz, Inc.

helped make that dream a stunningly beautiful reality. The Chabad House had many historical features that Hausman wanted to keep and the collaboration was an integral role in the transformation of the property. They preserved the structural and historical integrity of the front doors and the mahogany stair tower and fireplaces—maintaining as much of the historical value as possible. All of the interior design specifics had been given careful consideration. Everything from the cabinetry, countertops, lighting

fixtures, wallpaper, furniture, flooring, ceramic tiles, and every detail of all the finishes had been thought out. Hausman and Weber have been instrumental in coordinating and project managing and organizing the interior space. The first floor will serve as a space for dinners, services, and recreation. The second floor will house the rabbi and his family, and the third floor will offer lodging to alumni when they come to visit their children at school.

social mission

At Fig® we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of Lehigh Valley Girls Rock, our 2015 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year.

Lehigh Valley Girls Rock is a nonprofit organization that seeks to empower girls and foster their self-esteem with creative expression through music and the arts.

Left to right: Julie Kunkel, Volunteer Coordinator; Caitlin Schultheis, Marketing Director; Felicia Lockett, Vice President; Kelsi Page, President & Program Director; Pam Page, Treasurer; Dannah Hartman, Event Coordinator. Image captured at Wise Bean Coffee & Espresso Bar.

Kelsi Page got the idea for the organization while living in Texas and volunteering at Girls Rock Austin. She saw the positive influence such a group had on young women and she couldn’t wait to bring the concept to her hometown. Lehigh Valley Girls Rock is made up of musicians (Kelsi and Felicia make up local band Moonstruck), designers, artists, teachers, volunteers, and other women of the Lehigh Valley who are passionate about the mission and the organization. Focusing on inclusivity and affordability, all girls are encouraged to participate in the events and reap the benefits. Each summer they host a one-week long camp for girls ages 10-17 where they can learn to play an instrument, form a band, write an original song, and perform in concert. Additionally, different speakers offer workshops on art, stage presence, positive body image, and even yoga classes. The first Lehigh Valley Girls Rock camp weekend for women will launch Spring 2015. “We nurture an inclusive community for all girls and women by promoting collaboration, developing positive relationships, and encouraging effective communication. We use creative expression and ROCK to strengthen each girl’s inner voice and help her become the confident and self-aware person that she aspires to be,” Kelsi says. ........................................................................................ IF BETHLEHEM WAS A PERSON? I’D CALL HER A DREAMER. SHE HAS BIG PLANS AND SHE DOESN’T GIVE UP. I ADMIRE THAT. – MARTY

I hope and expect Bethlehem to continue to grow in the same manner it has over the recent years. I feel we expand in a way that pays homage to our historic, industrial past.

– CHRIS

THERE IS A NATIONWIDE TREND OF FOLKS MOVING BACK INTO URBAN AREAS. I HOPE THIS TREND APPLIES TO THE CITY OF BETHLEHEM. IT WOULD BE EXCITING TO HAVE MORE PEOPLE LIVING ON BOTH THE NORTH AND SOUTH SIDE. – TIM

WHY DO YOU LOVE

BETHLEHEM? we asked around town.

We wanted to hear your thoughts about why you love Bethlehem—and where you see it going in the next 5 years. Let’s look toward the future and see if we can make some of these big ideas and big dreams a reality.

WHAT ABOUT THE NEXT

FIVE YEARS?

Brian

WE GET PEOPLE DRAWN TO BETHLEHEM FROM NEW YORK, PHILADELPHIA, AND POINTS ALL AROUND US AS A DESTINATION. IT’S SUCH AN ECLECTIC MIX OF BUSINESSES AND SHOPPERS. WE CAN APPEAL TO EVERYBODY ACROSS THE BOARD.

I HOPE TO SEE RECYCLING BINS IN THE HISTORIC DOWNTOWN ALONG MAIN STREET AND THIRD STREET, MAKING BETHLEHEM MORE GREEN. – CHELSEA

BETHLEHEM IS A LITTLE BIT MORE INTIMATE, A LITTLE BIT MORE MOM AND POP— PEOPLE YOU CAN SHAKE HANDS WITH. – JENNIFER Chelsea

In the next 5 years I hope Bethlehem has more small businesses opening, and I hope to see growth in a way that helps to promote healthy living.

I LIKE BETHLEHEM BECAUSE IT HAS A SMALL TOWN VIBE WITH BIG CITY OPPORTUNITIES. THE DOWNTOWN AREA IS JUST IMMACULATE AND BEAUTIFUL. THERE’S A LOT OF FUN THINGS TO EXPERIENCE LOCALLY.

– JAMAL

Through the years I have come to appreciate all that this area has to offer. It is rich in its diversity, access to the arts and culture, and it is constantly moving forward. It is exciting to see how much the area has grown just in the short time that we have been here.

– ERIN

I HOPE TO SEE BETHLEHEM BECOME EVEN MORE WALKABLE. –   M A C K E N ZI E Mackenzie Laura

I LOVE BETHLEHEM BECAUSE THIS IS MY HOME. I’VE ALWAYS LIVED HERE, I GREW UP HERE, SO TO ME, THIS IS HOME. – TANAYAH

In the next 5 years I hope to see Bethlehem grow into a more ‘green’ and eco-friendly city. More community gardens, more bike paths, more group street cleanup projects, and more art made of recycled materials.

–   A LY SH A WITH THE NEW CONSTRUCTION, IT SHOULD BRING A LOT OF NEW FACES TO THE CITY. BETHLEHEM IS ONLY GOING TO GET MORE AND MORE POSITIVE. WE’RE DEFINITELY ON THE MAP. GRAND THINGS ARE IN OUR FUTURE.

–   L A UR A Tanayah

Rebecca

Bethlehem’s an urban area where I can access food, culture, and diverse people and still get in my car and drive to go on a hike. There’s so much enrichment in this area.

- R E B EC C A My heart led me to Bethlehem. I’ve formed so many bonds in this town. I’ve made a career here. I have fallen in love here. It is the place where I grew into a woman—for that I feel deeply rooted.

–   K AT E

BETHLEHEM IS SMALL ENOUGH TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND BIG ENOUGH TO HAVE MANY DIVERSE ACTIVITIES. – SAMANTHA

I LOVE THAT EVERY DAY IT HAS SOMETHING NEW TO OFFER. IT’S MY HOPE TO CONTRIBUTE, EVEN IN A SMALL WAY, TO THE VIBRANCY OF THE COMMUNITY AND PROMOTE ALL THAT IS GOOD ABOUT OUR TOWN. – DR. KRISTEN Bethlehem has an authentic, small, hometown type of feel. My wife always says, ‘it’s been a great place to raise a family.’ I think she’s right.

I’m excited about the revitalization of the South Side. I’m hoping it pulls the community together and brings awareness to key issues.

–   J AY

–  PA M

Pam

I’D LOVE TO SEE MORE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. TRAIN SERVICE TO PHILADELPHIA, NEW YORK, AND BOSTON WOULD DRAW A NEW DIVERSE CROWD TO BETHLEHEM. IT’S A KEY ELEMENT FOR OUR COMMUNITY’S FUTURE.

– THOMAS I LOVE THE CITY BECAUSE IT HAS A LOT OF CULTURE. IN THE TRI-CITY AREA, I THINK BETHLEHEM HAS THE MOST CULTURE. IT’S GOT AN ECLECTIC FOOD AND ART SCENE THAT I FIND ENGAGING.

TIM FOX

as a lover of the arts as well

as an optometrist, Dr. Tim Fox believes that vision is about more than just seeing clearly—it’s about changing perspectives. When Tim was contemplating starting his own practice in 1998, he saw that the South Side of Bethlehem was undergoing a renewal. Inspired by other cultural projects in progress at the time, Tim realized he could give back in a way that mirrored his own vocation. “Eyewear isn’t just function,” Tim says, “it’s also fashion.” With that philosophy in mind, Tim decided to contribute to Bethlehem’s renaissance by creating a space that was both a doctor’s office and an art gallery featuring the work 30 figbethlehem.com

of area artists. Tim transformed a first floor space in a 100-year-old building on Third Street into Fox Optical & Gallery. Entering Tim’s office is like being transported to the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. It boasts exposed brick walls and hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings with original tin covering, and a gorgeous skylight. The strategically placed track lighting focuses your eyes on the artwork, enabling Fox Optical & Gallery to help more than 80 local artists gain recognition since its inception. In addition to promoting these established and emerging artists, Tim also helps those less fortunate by serving on the board of the Lehigh Valley’s Center

for Vision Loss. “Vision is how we live our life,” says Tim, “and the loss of vision can be devastating. The Center for Vision Loss is there to help blind and visually impaired clients restore their quality of life and achieve their personal goals.” If perception is reality, then Tim—who was born and raised on the South Side of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, by parents who also loved the arts—hopes his conception of giving back will ensure that Bethlehem’s South Side becomes as vibrant and flourishing as it was in the glory days of the industrial revolution. Find out more about Tim at Fox Optical & Gallery and at foxoptical.com.
