Bethlehem

IS A

Spring is upon us, and with it comes a renewed sense of being. The days get a bit longer, the air smells a bit sweeter, the sun beckons us to come outside. We awaken from our winter hibernation curious about what's new in this city we love. It's time to try that new spot on the corner that people have been talking about. It's time to start filling our calendars with upcoming events and social gatherings. With the warmer weather comes a freedom to begin exploring and expanding our horizons. Try out a cooking class at Northampton Community College so you can make the most of your fresh veggies from the farmer's market. Volunteer at New Bethany Ministries and learn how they are helping our neighbors. Check out a show at The Ice House or Zoellner Center and dive into the amazing art community that Bethlehem is building. There are new and exciting things happening all around us. While curiosity may sometimes get the best of us, in this town, being curious helps us to push our boundaries and think outside the box. So get out there and find out all you can about our amazing city. We'll be right there with you.

FRESH FACE : a fashionable woman in her fifties has a strong sense of herself. She knows what she wants. She doesn’t want to look twenty-five, but she doesn’t want to look eighty either. Fortunately, AM Luxe in downtown Bethlehem is in the business of creating the image she envisions for herself. Owner Ann Marie Supinski has spent decades in corporate retail. She was VP of operations nationally for stores like The Limited and Liz Claiborne, and was flying out of Philadelphia or Newark every week.

AM LUXE “After 35 years of doing that,” she says, “friends and colleagues encouraged me to go out on my own.” Ann Marie and her husband have lived in the Lehigh Valley for years, enjoying the variety Bethlehem has to offer. But still she felt there was something missing. “I personally went to King of Prussia to shop, to Short Hills, and to New York,” she says; but there was no place in Bethlehem that was comparable. “When I envisioned opening a shop of my own, it was really important to me that it

be unique and focused on that sophisticated woman.” Unlike other stores, AM Luxe is open until 8 pm Thursday through Saturday. Ann Marie is also expanding the brand to do personal styling consultations. With apparel, accessories, and home furnishings, AM Luxe will be all about creating a lifestyle for the customer, “where urban elegance meets downtown charm,” as its tagline says. needed to know about life, I learned from skateboarding. Skating taught me that it’s okay to fall down and the only way to achieve my goal was to get back up. Practicing new tricks taught me to be patient. And when you finally roll away from a trick you’ve tried 100 times, you realize the most rewarding experiences in life are the ones you work hard for, for yourself.” - andy po, owner The Bethlehem Skateplaza is an amazing place for the youth to safely learn to skateboard and stay active. COLOR ME MINE

Me Mine, you’re missing out. There are activities for every age, occasion, and interest—from afterschool enrichment programs and birthday parties for kids to corporate events and ladies night out for adults. And there are more than 700 different bisque, ceramic, and clay items to spark your imagination. Marketing manager Jaime Shively has been working at Color Me Mine for three years and is a driving force behind new ideas and exciting events. Owner Tara

Nagabhyru and her friendly and talented staff are there to help you as much or as little as you like, with three easy steps: You pick the item you want. You paint it. They fire it in their kiln. Tara spent most of her career in the financial industry before opening her Color Me Mine franchise. She had always had a creative nature, but the practical realities of life compelled her to put that impulse on the backburner. Eventually, she realized she had enough of the rat race. “I wanted to have a business where I could spend more time with my kids. I didn’t want to

Today, Tara gets to share in her customers’ special moments as well, like the time a father told her that coming here was the first time his teenage daughter had talked to him in two years. At Color Me Mine, she put down her smartphone and worked happily on her project with him. “The aspect that I love about this business is the human stories,” Tara says. “It makes my day when I hear them.” Learn more at lehighvalley.colormemine.com.

Curiosity

IN BETHLEHEM

M O R AV I A N C O L L E G E “entrepreneurship”

derives from an old French word meaning “an undertaking,” and Moravian College was born of this spirit. Founded in 1742 by sixteen-year-old Countess Benigna von Zinzendorf, Moravian became the first school in the American colonies to educate women and Native Americans in their own language. Modern society today has brought with it new and more complex problems than ever before, and the demand for entrepreneurial thinking has never been greater. Gary Kaskowitz, Dean, School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, decided to meet that demand by creating the college’s first course in entrepreneurship last fall. But this wouldn’t just be your traditional business course.

“I wanted the students to get a flavor of actually creating something,” Gary says, “not just having them read about entrepreneurship in a textbook.” As Gary was designing his course, an alumnus who had founded his own asset management firm came forward wanting to donate money to the college. In true entrepreneurial spirit, a light bulb went on and an entrepreneurship symposium was born. But this wouldn’t just be your traditional symposium. Moravian College’s symposium would not only combine student, alumni, and community participation, but culminate in a Shark Tank-style competition that would provide cash awards for the student winner and runners-up. Moravian’s new entrepreneurship design allows students to have traditional

classroom study supplemented by real world experience. “I wanted to have an applied model where students could go out and test their ideas against the marketplace,” says Gary. During the semester, students consult each week with an alumnus mentor, so that by the time the symposium comes, they have a refined product to present to the judges. Moravian College’s first entrepreneurship course and symposium was a resounding success, validating the college’s vision for the future. The creative juices are flowing.

"At Lehigh, entrepreneurship isn't just another skillset to be learned, it's a mindset to be cultivated."

Curiosity

IN BETHLEHEM

LEHIGH UNIVERSIT Y lehigh university has become so suffused with innovative thinking you can say their campus represents an entrepreneurial ecosystem. Grounded in the soil of the Baker Institute for Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Innovation, creative curiosity is sown at every level, across all disciplines. At Lehigh, entrepreneurship isn’t just another skillset to be learned, it’s a mindset to be cultivated. One of the newer innovations on campus is Baker’s Dozen, an ongoing series where outside domain experts from a variety of areas of interest are brought to campus to have dinner with 12 students who go through an application process. “The purpose is so students can start to understand the kinds of problems that need solving in a variety of settings,” says Lisa Getzler, Executive Director of the Baker Institute for Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Innovation at Lehigh University. “What are the kinds of issues that need addressing in some new way?” Lehigh even contributes to the flourishing of entrepreneurial thinking outside its own ecosystem, through collaboration with ventures like Building 21, a new, non-selective competency-

based high school in the Allentown School District. Building 21 is based on a model that develops teachers as guides and students as designers of their own pathways to graduation by giving them choices about how, what, and where they learn. When Building 21 wanted to incorporate entrepreneurship and innovation into their offerings for students, they came to Lehigh’s Baker Institute. “We’ve done entrepreneurship modules with them on student projects where they have an idea, learn about the market, and build a prototype,” says Lisa Getzler, “and we serve as consultants, coaches, and judges.” She is even working on developing a radio program series. “It will focus on the idea of demystifying innovation,” she says. “We’re excited to be talking about innovation in the Lehigh Valley with Lehigh Valley innovators, and beyond.”

giving back | spring 2016 | figbethlehem.com volunteer. donate. give back. Doug Roysdon, founder of Mock Turtle Marionette Theater

GIVING BACK : the purpose of creative placemaking is to bring diverse

stakeholders together to strategically shape the character of a city around the arts and other cultural activities. By celebrating the distinctive values of a place and cultivating local artists, the community thrives both economically and socially. No one knows this better than Doug Roysdon. Doug’s Mock Turtle Marionette Theater is one of the founding groups of The Icehouse down on River Street. “When 28 figbethlehem.com

DOUG R OYS DO N I came into the puppetry field,” Doug says, “I had all kinds of support from all kinds of different sources. I look around now and I’m not seeing the same opportunity for younger artists.” For Doug, creative placemaking is an organic ecological notion of culture. “The healthier that ecosystem,” he says, “the more economically beneficial it is. When you create a nice place, with a good strong living pulse, then you have created a very important piece of the economic pie.” More commercial enterprises can

attach themselves to this kind of community. There’s no better place for them to grow roots. Doug sees his responsibility now as a sort of gardener cultivating the soil of a small but rich world of local and regional artists in this ecosystem. For Doug, giving back to the community isn’t sentimental, he just thinks it’s the right thing to do. “I’ve been lucky,” he says, “so I try to help other people get a stage.” Learn more at MockTurtle.org.

SOCIAL MISSION At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of New Bethany Ministries—our 2016 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year.

for 30 years, the mission of New Bethany Ministries has been to create opportunities for a secure future for the homeless, hungry, poor, and mentally ill of the Lehigh Valley. Our goal is to help families and individuals who are capable to become self sufficient and live independently. We also strive to identify and optimize opportunities and improve the quality of life for our guests who cope with mental illness, disabilities, and/or extreme poverty. a lifetime of love, legacy, & necessity

stephanie brings her love of events and how to

produce them to fruition in her hometown of Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, at Bell Gate Farm. With a consumer direct approach, she finds joy in helping clients realize their dreams of producing an unforgettable occasion within a reasonable budget, and works tirelessly to that end. She says, “People aren’t packages, and their events shouldn’t fall into this industry’s profit template; I want clients to know they can have an unforgettable and well remembered event without busting through the seams of their own bottom line.” From a small and intimate dinner party to a large, extravagant gala, everyone is welcome. Forget all you know about throwing a party, hosting a charitable event, or going to a yoga retreat. Stevens and her team are making waves with their innovative planning, design, and marketing ideas. “It is important to me that Bell Gate generate community interest with outdoor movie nights, yoga under the stars, cooking classes, etc. The possibilities are endless.” To learn more and to schedule your tour, visit bellgatefarm.com.
