columbia is such a special place, but never more so than during the holidays. With thrilling anticipation as the curtain is raised on this magical season, we catch our collective breath while the dancers in this fantastical production take their places. As our local shops, boutiques, restaurants, and eateries prepare for this most marvelous time of year, we realize anew just how fortunate we are to live in this city. Seeing with fresh eyes the beauty all around us, we’re proud to support our local community with its grace and elegance, fun and whimsy, charm and tradition—all the things that make it uniquely Columbia. Celebrating our 2nd anniversary of Fig Columbia, we can’t think of a better way to mark the occasion than by inviting Columbia City Ballet's beautiful and talented dancers to enjoy some of our favorite things. Whether it’s digging into seasonal treats, playing with adorable puppies, or trying on a cool new pair of shades, everything is more festive when you include sparkling tutus into the mix. We’re so grateful for the warm welcomes and the lasting friendships we’ve experienced over these past two years. Falling in love with Columbia again and again has been our pleasure and our privilege, and we thank you for joining us along the way. As we look ahead to our third year of loving local, we wish you and yours the happiest of holidays. FOSTERING TRUST and nurturing caring relationships providing comprehensive, family-focused, behavioral health services to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect, The Nurturing Center believes that every individual is a person of value and worth. call for volunteers! Volunteers are critical to the effective provision of services at The Nurturing Center. Whether they are working with a child oneon-one in the classrooms, planting flowers, aiding in the redesign of the playground, or bringing special sweets from a local bakery, they are cherished and supported by The Nurturing Center staff.

As they work to foster trusting, caring relationships between adults and children, The Nurturing Center recognizes that the earlier positive parent-child interactions and family functioning are promoted, the more successful they are. In a warm and loving setting, the team at The Nurturing Center works one-on-one with adults to coach them on how to parent and interact with their children. In addition to helping them understand children’s normal developmental stages, the team also helps parents cope with problems such as unemployment, lack of education, depression, or other stress-inducing circumstances. When families are referred to the center, they are welcomed into an environment that promotes the therapeutic and healing process.

G I V I N G B AC K : since 2002, The Cinderella Project

has been providing prom dresses for economically disadvantaged students unable to purchase a gown for their high school prom. Sponsored by the SC Bar Young Lawyers Division (YLD) and the Upsilon Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and chaired this year by Sheila Bias of Richardson, Plowden & Robinson, P.A., this project enlists local fairy godmothers to donate gently-worn formal, bridesmaid, and prom dresses, evening bags, jewelry, and shoes to help

the cinderella project

Cinderella arrive at her prom in style. “This project is so important because not only are we helping our students get the tangible benefit of a free prom dress, which eases a large financial burden for their families, but we are also helping our students build memories that will last a lifetime,” says Sheila. “It’s a true pleasure that we have the opportunity to help our students feel beautiful and special.” Clean dresses in all sizes, as well as evening bags, jewelry, shoes, and

other accessories are needed, and donations will be accepted throughout December, January, and February—not just in the city of Columbia, but also in Greenville, Orangeburg, Greenwood, Aiken, and Anderson. Beginning in February 2016, pop-up boutiques will be held in each city, where students from all area schools are invited to “shop” for dresses at no cost, making their prom dreams come true. To learn more about how and where to donate, visit scbar.org/yld.

singing songs about whiskey and men who done

them wrong, these fun, gutsy Southern ladies aren’t bellyaching or crybabying. Instead, there’s an almost renegade Depressionera spirit to their songs, telling stories of the kind of woman who can fry a chicken, whip up some biscuits, and bury some cheatin’ no-good man in a shallow grave. At the opening chords of “Dead, Drunk, or in Jail” (written by Steve Nuzum), their gentle voices harmonize over melancholy middle-of-the-night thoughts: “I cannot sleep. Your arms have left me. I toss and turn to no avail. For my love, who spoke so sweetly, is now drunk, dead, or in jail.”

By the end of the song, however, the tone has shifted delightfully to indignant gumption and decisive action: “Found you with her…and put out your lights.” Influenced by artists like Woody Guthrie, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Hank Williams, the Prairie Willows explore themes that are decidedly Southern American. But as Kristen, Kelley, and Perrin inject their winking and playful spirits to the mix, they deliver an irresistible, toetapping sound that is uniquely Columbia’s own. JLC Presidents, Holiday Market Chairs, and Council Members, both past & present; L to R: Misty Burton, Claudia Baker, Meg Mohan , Kim Jamieson, Ammie Smith, Linda Ferrante, Carla Moore, Lee Patterson, & Kim Leighton

AUTHENTIC: “We are very excited that this year is the 30th anniversary of Holiday Market, the Junior League of Columbia's largest fundraiser! It truly is a spectacular shopping event, and serves as the perfect way to kick off the holiday season. Events like Holiday Market give the Junior League of Columbia the ability to reach out to the community and improve the health and wellbeing of children and families in the Midlands.”

the junior league's holiday market

since 1986, the Junior League of Columbia’s Holiday Market has been the unofficial start to the local Christmas season. As the Market celebrates its 30th anniversary, this unparalleled shopping event, co-chaired by Meg Mohan and Ammie Smith, will serve as the JLC’s largest fundraiser of the year.

Generating more than $2 million during the past three decades, proceeds from this market support the wide array of community programs, events, and volunteer efforts that are

the hallmark of the Junior League’s charitable mission. Kicking off the four-day event with their highly-anticipated, black-tie optional Preview Party, the Market also features Ladies Night Out, as well as PJs with Santa, a fun and memorable evening for little ones with games, crafts, storytelling, and a visit from a certain special guest. With more than 125 merchants at the Market, shoppers are sure to discover the perfect holiday gifts for family and friends this season, all while knowing they

are supporting a long and proud tradition of giving back to the community. Held December 3 – 6 at the SC State Fairgrounds in the Cantey and Goodman Buildings, general admission tickets are $8 per person and include entry to all four days of the market. Children 12 and under are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased online and at the door. Separate events require an additional ticket purchase for each attendee. Please visit jlcolumbia.org for more information.
