U C AT I O N
A WARM WELCOME As a girl who’s lived all over—but has deep family roots in the South—first arriving in Columbia almost 20 years ago felt like coming home. The way of talking around here was instantly familiar: Ma’ams and Sirs punctuating nearly every sentence. Hugs for greetings instead of handshakes. Friends saying things like “y’all be good now” instead of good-bye. At last, I’d found my people. Just over three years ago, when I followed my husband up to Lancaster, PA, my love for Columbia only grew. And whenever I was inclined to indulge in a little homesickness, I’d turn on some Alison Krauss: “Heartstrings hold tighter than the roots of a live oak tree.” Tears every time.
• DINING •
COMMUNITY
But when I finally looked around enough to enjoy the adventure life had given us, I discovered a little magazine called Fig®. Created by a small and talented group of folks making a positive difference in their community and other special destinations, Fig® was distinctive and lovely to look at. It reminded me that there are good things worth discovering no matter where you find yourself. That there are interesting, hard-working, and creative people putting their mark on a place, and that getting to know them is one of the best gifts life can offer. Now that we’re finally back in Columbia (hooray!), I’m so pleased to bring Fig® down South to share with the city I love. And as we settle in for a happy holiday season with magnolia leaves on the mantel and not a single snowflake in the sky, I’m deeply grateful to be back in Columbia. And whether the roots of your family tree have been planted for generations in Columbia or you’re brandspanking new and ready to learn about this amazing city, this Fig® is for you. Y’all be good now.

YOU ARE HERE As one of the first planned cities in the country, Columbia was built on a 2-mile grid of orderly blocks along where the Broad and Saluda Rivers come together to form the Congaree. Since its creation in 1786, Columbia has expanded considerably, with neighborhoods and shopping districts springing up to create a vibrant and diverse city with strong ties to the past and a vision for the future.

VISTA WEST + VISTA On the banks of the Congaree River, the Vista is Columbia’s revitalized warehouse district. Home to the historic Adluh Flour Mill, this former industrial quarter now features upscale shops, restaurants, galleries, hotels, and sophisticated urban dwelling places. giving back Debbie McDaniel
Debbie McDaniel Owner, Revente’s 2nd Chances on Millwood & Revente and Sid Nancy in Five Points
A PERFECT FIT Debbie McDaniel wanted to make a difference. As the daughter and granddaughter of women who volunteered their time and talents to help others, Debbie had the role models she needed to encourage her to action. As the owner of two successful resale stores, Revente and Sid Nancy in Five Points, she knew just how she could make her talents work for others. She began making plans to open another store. The clothes from Revente that didn’t find a home would be moved to this new store—and all the profits would be given to charity. “I knew I wanted to help a non-profit that worked with women,” Debbie says. “I spoke with a friend in that area who referred me to

“I feel extremely fortunate that I am now able to give back and support...”
“Over the last three years, it’s more than $75,000,” according to Kathy Riley. She continues to be overwhelmed by Debbie’s generosity. “Here’s someone who works hard to make her for-profit business a success so she can give all the profits away!” Second Chances isn’t the only way Debbie makes a difference in Columbia. A family tradition of volunteerism and some serious business savvy has benefitted other organizations, too. And Debbie is happy to make a difference. “I feel extremely fortunate that I am now able to give back and support so many different causes—from those in need to the arts.”

Owners John and Nickki Sparrow— along with Mary Sparrow, purveyor of Columbia’s own Mother’s Shuckers cocktail sauce—decided that Columbia needed a store where the creators of local foodstuffs could get their products on a shelf.
Partnering with Tyler Jones, who opened the first Provisions by Sandy Creek in Indian Land, NC, the Sparrows are thrilled to bring this concept to Columbia. Stocked with products from local farms and small businesses, such as DiPrato’s pimento cheese, the store also features Provisions by Sandy Creek-branded products.

Bringing the community together through agri-tourism, local food, and local chefs who deliver the freshest ingredients to the table in creative and unique ways, Farm to Table’s events include a series of Harvest Dinners, Nose to Tail Dinners, Adventure Dinners, and music events. The seed for this innovative idea was planted in 2010 when founder Vanessa Driscoll first returned home from living in Asheville, NC and attended a Sustainable Midlands Holiday Market. Having heard of the then-new City Roots Farm, Vanessa— who’d always wanted to create a field dinner—walked right up to the owners of City Roots and said, “I want to have dinners on your farm.” They thought she was crazy. A couple of months later, Vanessa joined with the McClam family, owners of City Roots, and Chef/Owner of @116 Ryan Whittaker, to create Columbia’s very first Harvest Dinner. Three years later, the team at Farm to Table—which now includes Chef/Owner Kristian Niemi of Rosso Trattoria and Bourbon Columbia and Executive Chef Travis Rayle as the resident Harvest Dinner Chefs—decided to take their passion for local food events and put it all under one roof. As they continue the growing tradition of bringing the community together over local fresh food, Farm to Table creates unique settings with talented chefs in large and small venues.

Whether it’s through their regular series at City Roots Farm, at a museum, by a riverside, or in your backyard, the Farm to Table Event Company brings fresh, locally-grown food, expert chefs, and even the table to share in a spirit of community. City Roots, a 3.5-acre Columbia City farm, includes approximately 100 varieties of fruits and vegetables, bees (not only for honey but for pollination), and chickens (not only for eggs but for the fertility they add to the soil). The farm does extensive crop rotations, cover cropping, and composting for soil fertility and pest management. It produces microgreens year round, grows culinary mushrooms, and operates an aquaponic system which combines aquaculture, the production of commercial fish (tilapia), and hydroponics.

A long-time champion of local art through Frame of Mind—the state’s only eyewear boutique and alternative art gallery hybrid—Mark hosted the first art show about five years ago at FOM as a way of supporting a local artist and friend, which soon developed into a monthly series with an ever-increasing attendance.

We pride ourselves on being an event for the people by the people. Come out and enjoy!”

Dianne Light & Bill Prato
Bill Prato & Dianne Light Owners, DiPrato’s
NEW YORK STYLE, SOUTHERN CHARM In a quiet Columbia neighborhood barely off the beaten path, DiPrato’s offers the best of two worlds: a true New York Style delicatessen blended with Southern grace and charm. An unlikely pairing that has stood the test of time, restaurateur Dianne Light—born and bred in South Carolina—and chef Bill Prato — a native New Yorker and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America—first opened DiPrato’s in 2004. Working together, they first discovered their culinary chemistry at Dianne on Devine’s, a Columbia institution of fine dining from 1989 to 2013.
When the former home of The Purple Cow grocery at 342 Pickens Street became available, Dianne and Bill knew they’d found the ideal spot to fulfill their dream of creating a true New York-style delicatessen. Today, DiPrato’s is Columbia’s go-to spot for homemade salads, signature sandwiches, award-winning brunches, and weekday specials that make every visit an event.
“I’m very excited about the opportunity to continue my 40-year restaurant career at DiPrato’s.” -Dianne Light
And, most famously, DiPrato’s is known for their perfect pimento cheese, most often served as nature intended—in a big bowl with garlic pita chips.
Great News! DiPrato’s fans can stock up on their favorite pimento cheese at retailers all around town.

STAY ROOTED Robin Waites in her own words
F
ig® believes in the power of history—that
“ Lots of people think that
understanding where we’re from
because Columbia was
is part of knowing where we’re heading. Robin Waites, Executive Director, Historic Columbia, agrees: “Lots of people think that because Columbia was burned in 1865 that there isn’t anything interesting to see. While this was a devastating event, Columbians used it to raise up what was not lost and to lay a foundation for a vibrant, diverse future. The result is an eclectic mix of historic places that date from the 1790s to the 1950s. Our Main Street boasts an extraordinary array of buildings from the 1870s (like the newly renovated Brennen Building and City Hall) that mark the rebirth of the city to the early 1900s that mark its rise as an a modern urban center (Palmetto Building,
Barringer, Kress). The historic Congaree Vista, once the center for light industrial business and the hub for the transportation of goods (and people), includes an incredible representation of masonry structures from the early 20th century. Historic neighborhoods ring the city center with architecture that includes styles ranging from bungalows to shotgun houses to Queen Anne mansions. Today it is these unique historic places that serve as the foundation for much of Columbia’s renaissance. Historic Columbia utilizes our built history to tell the stories of the people who walked these streets, built these places, and made the capital city what it is today.”
