t s e t e e Sw year the

time of the

during this good and joyful season, we gather

with friends and family to celebrate the things that matter most. As we remember cherished traditions from days gone by, we’re also creating brand new memories that will carry us into the years ahead.

Perhaps now, more than at any other time of year, this is the season when we show our love in thoughtful and festive ways: a perfectly wrapped gift under the tree, a dinner party with friends, a handwritten note. And with no place like home for the holidays, we’re so happy to enjoy the simple pleasures of living in Columbia. On the pages of this issue, we celebrate the gift of shopping locally for everyone on our list. We’re showcasing local shops and boutiques, as well as the many wonderful things that make this city so distinctive and unique. As Fig® Columbia wraps up a remarkable first year, we’re overwhelmed with gratitude. You’ve joined alongside us in celebrating what makes Columbia such a special place. You’ve helped us illuminate the fresh, fashionable, and flavorful of this thriving community. You’ve shared your lives and your stories with us—and we are honored beyond words. We look forward to being a part of the positive change and growth in Columbia and to celebrating many more festive holidays! friends since their college years,

Kellan Monroe and Andrew Johnson once had long discussions in the back rows of engineering classes at USC about starting their own brewery. But after months of development and product research (aka, drinking lots of beer), Kellan and Andrew decided to take their original concept in a different direction and opened Craft and Draft, Columbia’s first craft beer store and growler shop. “It's a complete blessing to go and do what we love on a daily basis,” says co-owner Andrew. “From the walk to work, to sampling and buying new beers for the store, to meeting new faces each day, each part has its own thrill factor.”

Alongside its impressive inventory of six-packs, bottles, and cans, Craft and Draft also features 12 taps serving premier beers from all over the country —including local craft breweries in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. Not just a great location to browse and shop, Craft and Draft’s comfortable and laid-back atmosphere is a welcome invitation to linger. Providing a refreshing change of pace from the typical bar scene, Craft and Draft is the ideal spot in Columbia to wind down from the workday alongside fellow craft beer enthusiasts. “Heck, every day someone new comes by, shakes our hand, and tells us how happy they are to have us in the community,” says Andrew. “We’re planning to host even more functions, parties, and brewery nights in the coming months.”

giving back:

volunteering runs in susie heyward’s family. Throughout

her childhood in Eloree, South Carolina, her grandmother was the unofficial, unauthorized, and self-appointed SPCA. People would leave animals on her front porch, knowing she would care for them. Susie had a pet squirrel as a companion when she was in elementary school, a rescued animal whose mother had been run over by a car. She also used to ride with her grandmother, taking meals and groceries to local families. Thanks to her grandmother’s grace and commitment, Susie learned early how to care for those in need. Volunteering and helping others in her community was a way of life.

susie heyward

She has been on several boards in Columbia, including the Columbia Museum of Art and Columbia Green. Her passion for the environment was reignited in 1989, when she became a Master Gardener. These days, she serves as chair of the board for Sustainable Midlands, working to promote sustainable practices in the community. She has chaired the board since its inception. She works hard, for free, but she has her reasons. “I can only raise money for things I’m passionate about, and volunteering is really about improving the quality of life in the community," she says. Susie is perfect for Sustainable Midlands because she is passionate about the

environment and doesn’t shy away from politics, having served on Columbia’s planning commission for nine years, beginning in 2000. During that time, she is most proud of helping develop the tree and landscape ordinance and getting it passed. According to Sustainable Midlands’ founding director Ryan Nevius, Susie is also the energy behind Treasured Trees of the Midlands, a Columbia program designed to recognize and preserve trees with historical, social, or environmental significance. From this city’s numerous green spaces, large and small, to its beautiful trees and flowers, Columbia’s environmental landscape will be Susie’s legacy.

self described as “americana exotica,” the ruby brunettes are a true columbia original. Creating a soundtrack for southern rural life, this four-piece collective is headed by singer/guitarist Chris Compton, with Chris Paget on bass, Ken Mixon on percussion, and Catherine Allgrim on trombone.

Describing the band’s evolution, Chris Compton explains: “After hearing Catherine performing with another band, I asked her to join us. I liked the idea of having a horn in the band to add an interesting twist to an already quirky set of songs, but it was her innate ability to harmonize and follow the lead vocal with perfect phrasing that had me hooked.”

With an open, clean, and upbeat sound, The Ruby Brunettes are inspired by the legacy of Southern music but are certainly not limited by it. Taking a variety of musical styles and traditions, they continually reshape them into something unique. Their live four-song EP titled Woodshed Sessions, with songs like “Back of Beyond” and “Lazybone,” demonstrates a kind of songwriting that is simultaneously carefree and comfortable in its own skin. The Ruby Brunettes sound like no one else and that’s fine with them. That’s fine with us, too. Visit figcolumbia.com/voices to read more from Fig®’s interview with The Ruby Brunettes.

holiday wine pairing tips: The most important rule of thumb is to select wines that complement your meal, not overpower it. The food comes first. Bubbles are your friend. You can set a fun and exciting tone for the evening by pairing a sparkling wine with light hors d’oeuvres, and then wrap things up beautifully by pairing it with almost any style of dessert. When selecting a white wine for your meal, look for those with good acidity and bright fruit flavors, like an Oregon Pinot Gris or a Gewürztraminer from France or Germany. When choosing reds, it’s a good bet to steer toward well-balanced wines with softer tannins and good acidity, like a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir or a Tempranillo from Rioja. For the perfect holiday gift, bring both a white and a red from a specific wine region that your host or hostess may not normally drink, but that still fits their style. For instance, if they often favor California wines, treat them to wines from the RhÔne Valley. And if you need to pick up a quick little something on your way to a dinner party, you can never go wrong with a great bottle of Rosé Champagne. Wondering how much wine to buy when planning an event? A good guideline is two glasses of wine per person per hour, with the typical holiday get-together generally lasting about three to four hours. Of course, it never hurts to be generous in your estimation since it’s a 100% certainty that wine leftovers will not go to waste. And if your guests are inclined to linger, there’ll be plenty of wine to keep the party going. Advintage Distributing is a SC-based importer and distributor for a number of Columbia’s great local wine shops that can guide and assist you in choosing exactly the right wines for the holidays.

Nana was Sally’s greatgrandmother. The four dots in the logo represent the four generations of women here because of Nana: Sally’s grandmother, mother, herself, and her daughters.

the thread that binds Sally Peek, creator and designer of locally made Nana products, is almost as well known in Columbia for her excellent hugs and warm smiles as she is for one-of-akind handbags. A regular fixture at Columbia’s Soda City market on Main Street, Sally notes that the origins of Nana are never too far from her weekly booth: “It’s a little surreal—at the market, my booth is often located right near the very room where I learned how to sew.” As Sally tells it, she developed a fever for fabrics back in 2007, when it just so happened the Columbia Museum of Art 42 figcolumbia.com

was offering a class on making handbags. Sally showed up with a yard of fabric and her brand new sewing machine, and left that same day with a freshly made bag and a new creative outlet. As part of this city’s growing community of artists and craftspeople, Sally believes the desire to make and create in Columbia has greatly expanded over the past few years. “Soda City is an integral part of that, in my opinion,” explains Sally. “With the market now on Main Street, the work of local artisans isn’t tucked away and hard to find—it’s right in the middle of town, mixed in with doughnuts and balloon animals and fun.”

Her latest endeavor, working with leather, has been an exciting addition to Nana’s original repertoire of vintage and vintageinspired fabrics. “I started playing with leather last summer, so it has been a little over a year,” says Sally. “It was a natural evolution and has been a total learning process. It’s a challenge and I love that.” As for what’s next, Sally vows to continually keep things fresh: “Every January I take the month off from the world to completely unplug and make one new goal for Nana for the year.” Find Nana products at nanabysally.com

Salt water pools have approximately one-tenth the salinity of ocean water and about the salinity of human tears. Swimmers enjoy the soft feel of the water, and it’s more soothing on the skin, hair, eyes, and nose than the water found in traditional chlorinated pools.

with the mantra: “We love brewing craft

beer because beer makes people happy,” River Rat Brewery originally emerged from owner Mike Tourville’s home-brewing hobby. Now boasting state-of-the-art equipment and recruited talent with a combined 26 years of experience in the professional craft beer industry, River Rat is dedicated to creating beers that are perfectly balanced, refreshingly bold, and deliciously drinkable. Named in honor of the three rivers that run through this city and the working-class laborers on the canal more than a century ago, River Rat was established at the heart of Columbia

in 2013. Their tasting room on Shop Road has quickly become a favorite among beer lovers, and their patio and green space are perfect for enjoying local food truck fare and soaking up the sun with friends. Beyond the tasting room doors, beer aficionados can also enjoy River Rat brews at bars, restaurants, and shops all over town and even around the state. And with the recent expansion of their bottling operation, there are even more opportunities to enjoy, share, and make people happy.

scout & molly’s

a university of south carolina grad who always dreamed of owning her own boutique, Amanda Mott opened Scout & Molly’s earlier this year in Trenholm Plaza, offering a variety of women’s clothing and accessories. The original shop in North Carolina—founded 12 years ago by Lisa Kornstein after completing graduate school at USC—was named for her two beloved dogs, Scout and Molly. Envisioning a store where a customer would feel like she was in her best friend’s closet, Lisa wanted to create a place where customers can count on a friendly face and an honest opinion. With local jewelry lines and designers that appeal to a broad range of ages, the Scout & Molly’s at Trenholm Plaza has stayed true to Lisa’s original vision of fabulous clothing and accessories in a warm, fun atmosphere. Whether helping a customer find the perfect pair of jeans or a dress for an upcoming event, Amanda has a knack for making everyone who walks in the door feel equally welcome. And with new styles arriving weekly, there’s always a new reason to stop by. 58 4840 forest drive
