WHAT IS IT ABOUT LIVE LOCAL MUSIC? Never the same from one moment to the next, live music breathes. It sweats. It has a pulse. Invisible, yet transformative, music connects those who otherwise have no connection. Uniquely communal, music serves as a kind of language for the soul, giving voice to the ineffable, inexpressible experience of being human. And, besides all that, it’s just plain cool. In this issue, Fig® takes a backstage view to better understand, appreciate, and enjoy all of the work, creativity, and drive that happen behind the scenes. From songwriters to performers, promoters to venue owners, we’ve been talking to the music lovers and makers in this city, discovering a community of people who are passionate about the power of local music. There aren’t many things that bring people together and make them feel as one, but, happily, music is one of them. And with such a wealth to be explored, we’ve only scratched the surface. Consider this your all-access pass to Columbia’s larger music community, and be sure to let us know what you find. As one local musician put it: “If you want to see the heart of any city, there isn’t a better window to look through than its music and art scene. It will tell you everything you need to know, and that’s just one small reason among many that it's worth supporting.” We couldn’t agree more. So flip the pages to learn about our own local rock stars— and then make plans to catch a show, buy their music, and show some love. You’ll be so glad you did. Rock on,

What to try this fall: Try the Single Malt Rye Whiskey. Made from 100% malted rye and aged in charred new oak barrels, this spicy whiskey is unique—only three distilleries in the country distill from 100% malted rye.
crouch distilling
with columbia’s growing thirst for local and unique, Crouch Distilling is perfectly positioned with their distinctive line of craft whiskeys. For owners and founders Phil and Jessica Crouch, the progression from grain to glass has been natural. “We started our distillery to make our own whiskey, not repackage someone else’s. We’re proud that
we mash and distill our own spirits in small batches.” Drawing upon his expertise from previous employment at a local organic mill, Phil first selects the finest grains and malts, which they then mill and distill themselves. Aging their whiskey on-site in their unique cooperage and then bottling by hand, Phil and Jessica are reviving the art and science of handcrafted spirits.
With offerings such as Carolina White Whiskey, Carolina Raw Rye, Young Carolina Bourbon, Carolina Rye Single Malt, and Carolina Sour Mash Whiskey, visitors to the Crouch tasting room not only enjoy samples, but also learn about the distilling process with a personal tour of the facility. Visit the tasting room Thursdays and Fridays (4:30 – 7 pm), or Saturdays (1 – 7 pm).

the title track of Brian Robert’s
debut solo record, 1117 Magnolia, perfectly captures the experience of saying goodbye. With waltzing two-step undertones that hurt your heart a little bit, this is the kind of song for losing yourself, the kind that you don’t want to end. “For this record, I really got into old country and folk music,” says Brian. “And I tried to make an effort to tell stories in this style.” Succeeding beautifully with age-old lyrics like, “I fall in love too easily/ Darling, please answer my call,” this album is achingly good. There’s a sweet mournfulness to many of Brian’s songs, and his voice has the quality of someone who instinctively understands how to find beauty in the
bruised and tender parts of life. A recent transplant to Columbia, Brian is settling into his new hometown’s music community. Formerly the front man for his band Company in Charleston, he’s now working with local artists and releasing his album through 10 Foot Woody Records, a new label co-founded by Greg Slattery and Zac Thomas. “I’m terrible at saying goodbye, especially with people whom I love so dearly, and my music is really the only way I have to tell how I honestly feel,” says Brian. “Hopefully, all the folks I’m telling stories about on this record hear it and know how I feel. And hopefully others can listen and enjoy it, too.” Have a listen and order Brian Robert’s new album 1117 Magnolia at brianrobertsc.com.

providing comprehensive, family-focused, behavioral health services to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect, The Nurturing Center believes that every individual is a person of value and worth. As they work to foster trusting, caring relationships between adults and children, The Nurturing Center recognizes that the earlier positive parent-child interactions and family functioning are promoted, the more successful they are. In a warm and loving setting, the team at The Nurturing Center works one-on-one with adults to coach them on how to parent and interact with their children. In addition to helping them understand children’s normal developmental stages, the team also helps parents cope with problems such as unemployment, lack of education, depression, or other stress-inducing circumstances. When families are referred to the center, they are welcomed into an environment that promotes the therapeutic and healing process.

Clark Ellefson & Andy Rodgers, co-owners
AUTHENTIC:
art bar
a true original for more than 20 years, Art Bar in the Vista has long been Columbia’s most eclectic answer to where to go for extraordinary nightlife and live music.
As Clark Ellefson tells it, he and former co-owner Jeff Helsley decided more than 20 years ago to reimagine the former tire store at 1211 Park Street into a bar, both enhancing the then limited nightlife in the Vista and allowing them to help save the upstairs studio of artist and friend Eleanor
Byrne. Throwing a raw space party on New Year’s Eve 1992, they kicked off the nine month renovation of what soon became Columbia’s iconic Art Bar. Andy Rodgers, one of the original bartenders, and now a co-owner, has been an important part of Art Bar’s longevity, helping connect the bar to new generations. With a variety of weekly events and live music, including both national acts and almost every local band within a 50-mile radius of the city (including Capital City
Playboys, American Gun, New York Disco Villains, and Debbie and the Skanks), this Columbia icon draws an impressive crosssection of patrons through its doors. “Back in 1992, I think only Clark had the vision that the Vista would turn into the entertainment and dining mecca it is today,” says Andy. “Thanks to our ability and willingness to adapt while staying true to our roots, the future looks bright for Art Bar.” Visit artbarsc.com to learn more.

“Girls Rock is so much fun because it gives me a chance to make new friends. I love how girls are cheered for being themselves and that everyone is so supportive of each other!” – Kiana W., camper GIVING BACK: Image captured at New Brookland Tavern “New Brookland Tavern is a venue where a lot of people in this town get their first introduction to Columbia’s music scene, with its all-ages shows and willingness to book new bands. From the beginning, NBT has supported our work, and we can’t wait to see a rising generation of musicians taking the stage there!” – Mollie Williamson
girls rock columbia
founded locally in 2013,
Girls Rock Columbia is a weeklong summer day camp that fosters a community of girls ages 8 – 17 through music education and performance, empowerment workshops, and positive role models. Encouraging selfconfidence, challenging gender stereotypes, and promoting creativity and leadership, Girls Rock is part of a larger international movement to help girls find their voices. As executive director Mollie Williamson explains: “Girls Rock
Columbia is an oasis where you can look around and realize that all of the things about yourself that you thought were wrong, or ‘too’ something—too loud, too fat, too old, too weird—are not only accepted, but celebrated by your peers.” Girls Rock includes girls of all backgrounds regardless of socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, community, age, ability, or experience. And with 57 campers this July—four times as many from their first year—and about 400 people in the audience at their end-of-camp showcase at
the Columbia Museum of Art, it’s clear that Girls Rock is growing. “We’re trying to figure out ways to expand so that we can provide a more continuous experience for youth,” says Mollie. “The upcoming year might hold monthly skill shares, a teen mentoring program, multiple camp sessions, Ladies Rock Camp, or even a Girls Rock afterschool program.” Want to get involved? “I can’t lie, being on stage is amazing. I love it. The first few minutes up there, I’m always a nervous mess but it doesn’t take long before the stage monster that is ‘Debbie’ gets going and all bets are off.”
“Every year I’m blown away with the music on our annual SceneSC sampler, and it makes me so happy to be the one who gets to share some of the amazing local talent we have here.”
o n RECORDING JAY MATHESON “Jam Room operates in the same fashion as studios used to in the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. We make legit records that are not really part of any fad or trend, but are just good straight-up reproductions of a band’s music.”
Background image: the stage at Music Farm
o n THE COMMUNITY CATHERINE ALLGRIM “I like the democracy and collaboration found in our large, active music circle. It’s not ‘cut throat’ like many other music scenes, and we surely like to get together and have a good time.”

“Instead of having one large concert hall, we have a three-room configuration, along with our awesome outside area. Marty Fort and Greg Slattery handle most of our band booking, and we try to vary our live music and not get stuck in one genre.”
MOLLIE WILLIAMSON
o n INSPIRATION
o n INDEPENDENT RECORD LABELS
“Most of the bands that we promote are touring 150+ days a year, so it’s imperative that we make them feel at home but also keep things consistent and moving along. When building Columbia Music Farm, we were very aware of the ease in which bands could get loaded in and loaded out. We even added a three-phase power source to a light pole so they could plug their bus in so not to have to run a generator all day. It’s a small thing, but it shows we pay attention to the little details.”
o n t h e ART BAR ANDY RODGERS
DANIEL MACHADO “I’ve been inspired by free jazz and noise music for a few years now. It’s been fun to do a few single pieces over the last few years that ignore pop structure altogether, but I haven’t quite committed to a full-length project that’s completely deconstructed yet. Would love to try that.”
o n PAPA JAZZ RECORD SHOPPE TIM SMITH “Most people still like being able to browse and be surprised (‘I’ll know what I’m looking for when I see it’), and talking to a live person makes a big difference. People feel like they are a part of the music community when they come here.”
o n SONGWRITING JOE BUCK ROBERTS “Usually it’s a fight between the words and the music. I’ll have a little turn of phrase come to mind with a melody already attached. Just a few words, maybe a complete line. And I’ll just give it all the time it needs. Once I get a hook or a chorus and an idea of where the rest of it needs to go, then most of the work is already done.”
“Live local music is important because it’s a way for us to share our experiences with one another. In a city like Columbia, understanding the experiences of others is crucial for our community to continue to grow and thrive.”
ZAC THOMAS & GREG SLATTERY “We started 10 Foot Woody Records because we believe in the music and art of our community. South Carolina has a music scene teeming with creative talent, and we want to pull back the curtain and show what a rich musical culture our state has to offer.”
o n PHOTOGRAPHY SEAN RAYFORD “I think my favorite place to shoot a band is at a house show, in a living room or maybe a kitchen. You meet people where not owning their own venue won’t stop them from putting on shows. It’s that DIY ethic. No excuses—and being able to apply that to the approach of my own craft has been invaluable.”
o n HIP HOP FAT RAT DA CZAR “Columbia has traditionally been a rock city, but as it becomes more progressive, it’s now inviting guys like me into the fold.”
TRAE JUDY
o n THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE MURRAY BAROODY “I see a real renaissance taking place with clubs like New Brookland and Art Bar featuring local acts, and Music Farm filling the void for both regional and national acts. Also, we are very fortunate to have an awesome free music event like the Jam Room Music Festival.”
o n SPINNING LOCALLY PREACH JACOBS “I wear several hats as a hip-hop artist, DJ, and show producer. My spinning gigs include places like Bourbon, Speakeasy, and Cafe Strudel, and I mostly play the type of music you won’t hear at your ordinary club: soul, funk, ‘90s hip-hop, house, etc. My goal is to put people on to great indie music that may not get the attention as commercial acts.”

Karen’s take on home trends for 2015: “It’s all about comfort and ease in our busy everyday lives. Soft and soothing colors, inviting smells, the right amount of lighting, and comfortable fabrics make a house a home.”
it’s the little things
proving that it’s the little things that make a difference, owner Karen
Cotran has created a shop on State Street in West Columbia where visitors immediately feel at home. In addition to offering beautiful furniture, lamps, candles, books, bedding, and home accessories, Karen and her associate designer Nadine Brown also help clients pull together all of the elements to make an inviting and comforting space. Whether you drop into their store for inspiration or to discover a
lovely little something to take home, Karen and Nadine’s expertise is always at the ready. As Karen explains, “In a time when our homes are our refuge, design professionals serve as an invaluable resource to help you achieve the desired impact of an individual room or a whole house.” For instance, as a professional window treatment expert on everything from roller shades to plantation shutters to custom draperies, Karen can work with you
in your home to help select just the right look for your windows. “A designer can save you thousands of dollars in one room by preventing costly mistakes,” says Karen. “We are trained in scale, proportion, balance, color, texture, and product quality, and can save you time and money by helping you shop for the right items to create the home of your dreams.” Learn more at karencotran.net.

Creativity and the Art of Innovation Creativity is a process of discovery and experimentation. Open-ended investigation and self-expression is vital to the development of young minds. Whether painting on canvas or constructing a cardboard city, creativity fosters critical thinking and inquiry, risk-taking, ingenuity and problem-solving – valuable tools that can build new ways of looking at the world and lead to true innovations in art, science and technology. EdVenture provides a wide range of programs designed to encourage creative exploration through experiences that engage both mind and body. Combining standards-based, stem-focused instruction with hands-on exploration, our museum activities, community outreach, and after school programs teach children how to harness the power of their own creativity and paint a bigger picture of the world around them. Expect
creative confidence
Because we respect students’ minds and expect the most of them, they gain both the competence and confidence to accomplish the extraordinary. From the first time your child sets pen to paper, lips to trumpet, foot on stage— to the time she paints a compelling landscape, performs a dance solo, delivers her lines with an inspired twist—she’s at work on the same, indelible skills. Among fellow artists and highly trained teachers, she gains discipline, rigor, and the confidence to approach a blank page or stage with utter fearlessness and trust herself enough to create. monkee’s
a graduate from the university of south carolina with a degree in
retailing, Taylor Stocker truly understands the spirit of Devine Street shopping. In her former role as assistant manager at Pink Sorbet, Taylor received support and encouragement from well-established shop owner Beth Baxley to pursue her dream of opening her own boutique. Now a whole-family affair, Monkee’s of Columbia is locally owned and operated by
the mother-daughter team of Taylor Stocker and Judy Miller. Along with sister, Reece Miller, these three ladies have a flair for style that makes this boutique a perfect addition to Devine Street. Carrying a unique blend of clothing and shoes from top designers and brands such as Hunter, Frye, Shoshanna, BCBG, Kate Spade, Kendra Scott, and Kelly Wynne, Monkee’s has been outfitting Columbia’s most fashionable shoppers from head to toe since February 2014.
Making the shopping experience what it should be—fun and personal—stepping into Monkee’s makes you realize that you might just need a bigger closet. And with their unique multi-generational focus, shoppers of all ages can find exactly what they’re looking for. Want to learn more about good style in Columbia? Visit monkeesofcolumbia.com.
