Columbia native and hand-wrought knife maker Reed Moore has raised the bar on local craftsmanship, and the world is taking notice. Applying his impressive understanding of metallurgical science to an ancient craft, Reed forges Damascus steel with more than 400 layers of metal, freezes the steel cryogenically, and tempers it three separate times.

the innovation issue issue no
TWO
Columbia is a city embracing innovation and change—
but on its own terms. Today’s Columbia, with its exciting new energy, still honors those who came before us, and we like it that way. The younger generations now making their mark on the city seem to understand intrinsically how to bridge what was and what will be. Their fresh-eyed creativity is constantly taking elements of the past, infusing them with new ideas, and building a future we can all be proud of. From blacksmithing to carpentry, haberdashery to mixology, and art to tech, this upand-coming breed of Columbian is forging a fresh new identity for our capital city, all while staying rooted in what makes Columbia the town we love. After all, Columbia has long been a place where people can take creative risks and test out new ideas. It’s a place where we connect as neighbors, family members, and friends, cheering each other on, helping each other when we stumble, and celebrating when we succeed. This is an exciting time to live and work in Columbia, a distinctive and vibrant city that finds itself increasingly on the cutting edge. As we continue to forge ahead, our local stories just keep getting better and better. Here’s to an innovative 2014!

the cma opens a new interactive education gallery
creating an accessible, comfortable, and engaging
space for families, the Columbia Museum of Art is thrilled to share its Interactive Education Gallery with the community. A place for children to learn about fine art in a fun, hands-on environment, this exciting, new gallery is completely free to the public. With its permanent interactive components, including art supplies, a bean bag area for kids to read and dream, and even a space for parents to unwind while their children set free their imaginations—the gallery is home to Gladys the Grasshopper, the CMA’s family mascot. “Parents need a place to not have to worry about their children while introducing them to fine art,” says Kathryn Hilliard Stuart of the Hilliard Family Foundation, whose generosity made the gallery a reality. “The Education Gallery provides a space for the children to touch, play with their hands, make noise, and create while allowing the parent a place to sit and relax for a moment. Education and art should be fun, and the Columbia Museum of Art is making that happen for people of all ages!”
“We are thrilled to provide this free and accessible interactive gallery for kids to play and learn,” says CMA Director of Education Kerry Kuhlkin-Hornsby. “The CMA is committed to bringing fun learning opportunities to the community, and this gallery is open for all to enjoy. We think both children and their parents are going to love it. We are very thankful to the Hilliard Family Fund for making this possible.”
Three interactive areas are centered on works of art from the CMA Collection that guide children in creative thinking and playful activities. The space with Frank Owen’s Shack, by Beverly Buchanan, has doors that open to reveal background information about the piece and fun facts about the CMA Collection. The section featuring Joan of Arc, by Paul Dubois, emphasizes symbolism while children create their own shields. Dream Boater, by Jeff Donovan, inspires visitors to write haikus using magnetic bubbles.

“I know how difficult it is to attain a balanced life. Juggling family life, a career, and self-care can be quite challenging. I deal with it on a daily basis, and I know it isn’t easy to find time for yourself.” Too often, personal care falls to the bottom of our priority lists, but, as Dr. Asha James explains, “Ensuring self-care is important not only to us but to those around us—when we look and feel our best, we tend to be better caretakers and perform better at our jobs.” Thankfully, skin care doesn’t have to be time consuming to deliver results. Just a few simple steps can unleash your inner glow and help you attain the healthy skin you have been longing for. With so many options available, from simple daily regimens to highly effective cosmetic procedures, it is easier than ever to find what works best for you. By visiting a professional who can truly relate, you know that you’ll be cared for in a way that realistically integrates your personal care into your daily routine. Dr. Asha James specializes in skin care and cosmetic treatments, such as Botox, fillers, and chemical peels.

Created to celebrate the power and beauty of women who are unafraid to express themselves authentically and unapologetically, the Miss Naturally Crowned Carolina pageant provides a wide-reaching platform to promote positive images and dialogue about natural hair, while also helping to celebrate a spirit of scholarship, entrepreneurship, and authenticity.
The Miss Naturally Crowned Carolina pageant is the brainchild of Columbia natives and best friends of more than 10 years Jessica Boyd and Maureen Ochola. Jessica and Maureen created the Miss Naturally Crowned Carolina pageant in an effort to further their mission to promote positive images and dialogue about afro-ethnic textured hair, while uplifting the beauty and the dreams of women who choose to wear it.

COLUMBIA on innovation What’s got Columbia so excited? We asked and you answered!
“I'm super-excited about the new trampoline park. So excited that I bought a new sports bra.” katie fox “I think it’s so exciting that our very own nonprofit art museum, the Columbia Museum of Art, has become one of the coolest places to be on any given day or night of the week because of stunning new exhibitions like Japan and the Jazz Age, brilliant events ranging from Chamber on Main to Arts & Draughts, and an array of educational programming for children and adults alike.” sarah wells
“Things that are happening that we don’t even know about yet, but will soon. Why? Because Columbia allows you to dream, to try, to test ideas. What is new and exciting is being dreamed up. Right now.” asheley scott “What excites me most about Columbia are entities like Sustainable Midlands, Soda City, and City Roots, as well as area restaurateurs who have introduced Columbians to the concept of ‘fresh and local’ in an appealing and enticing way.” anne weston

“What’s exciting is the youthful energy that is demanding a new and vibrant Columbia. Unconventional arts, great food and drink, and cool walkable places are making Columbia stand out.” matt kennell “I appreciate our local government for their proactive insight, as they have made both City and County Council meetings available for viewing via live-stream and by maintaining an online archive.” derek riley “It is phenomenal to see how Columbia has matured and grown to cater to and appeal to a diversity of people. From a thriving arts environment offering traditional and eclectic art openings, recycled fashion shows, to science cafes, entrepreneurial forums and TEDx talks... Not only do these events now exist, many of these groups are collaborating, creating even greater synergy and momentum.” elizabeth nkuo johnson “One of the great things about Columbia is that a person has a chance here, to be heard, to make a difference... A friend dropped me off here with a suitcase and a box 23 years ago, and I appreciate everyone and everything that helped me up along the way. I hope to return the favor tenfold.” emile defelice

“There's a buzz in and about Columbia that's become almost audible. It's a new sense that something is happening and people— old and young—are excited to be part of it.” barbara rackes “I love that there are so many yoga studios in town! Not just gyms or recreation centers, but actual yoga studios. No one should be stressed out or have tight hamstrings!” dara brown “The visual, performing, and even culinary arts scene in Columbia has seen new levels of collaboration in recent years. If we keep it going, Columbia could become a new destination for the creative class.” jonathan sharpe “It is exciting to see Main Street coming alive! My husband and I love catching a flick at the new Nick Theatre on weekends, and we are both avid supporters of the Columbia Museum of Art, which continues to bring extraordinary exhibits and programs to enrich our city.” emily brady “Of all the new and exciting things happening here, Kristian Niemi and his successful restaurant ventures immediately come to mind. His fresh take on dining is making a considerable impact on this town.” brenton sadreameli
“As a native of Columbia, I am beyond excited about how our city has grown. From the Nickelodeon's vibrant new marquee on Main Street to my local neighborhood bakery Crust (where everyone knows my name!), I love Columbia more and more.” Caroline Quillen
Doreen Sullivan Owner, Post No Bills
inspiration sparks creativity and innovation. That’s a maxim Doreen Sullivan could well have coined. At Post No Bills, her ad agency headquartered in Columbia’s Vista, she and her team constantly push creative to the next level. Often praised for their work for global mega-brands, including ESPN, Disney, and NBC Universal, they’re just as enthusiastic about work for local clients, such as the South Carolina State Fair, the Kennedy Pharmacy Innovation Center, Columbia Visitor’s Bureau, and the upcoming debut of the Blackstock Music Festival. In the early ´90s, Doreen uprooted her New York City company, bringing her roster of high-profile music clients to rural Prosperity, South Carolina. Demand for her special brand of creative thinking and innovative execution continued to grow, so she moved again in 2003—to Columbia. Today, she’s an active, vocal supporter of her adopted home, always on the lookout for ways to get positive national press for Columbia and to connect local talent with national opportunities. “When you love what you do and you love where you get to do it, you find inspiration and innovation all around you,” says Doreen. As she celebrates 27 years in business, Doreen is expanding her reach again, launching a website (DoreenSullivan.com) for speaking engagements, coaching, a blog, and random creative cool stuff. “I’m using the Post No Bills legacy of pop-culture projects to teach and inspire others,” she says. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”

FRESH FACE
denise stahl loves mixing and matching, anything and everything.
“I love prints and patterns, but I also love solids and neutrals. And I love unique jewelry,” says Denise. “But, most of all, I love that with fashion, you can express what you feel inside and walk out the door being someone different every day.” Opening Steel Garden earlier this spring in Five Points, Denise also loved choosing a name that perfectly captures the essence of her new shop: “My last name, Stahl, is the German word for ‘steel.’ I am an only child and I wanted a way for my name to carry, so it only seemed fitting to incorporate it into my business name,” she explains. Wanting to juxtapose steel with something a little softer, Denise then came up with the word “garden.” “I think it works because a garden is a collection of many beautiful, but different things, just like a small boutique.” Seeking to become the go-to place in the city for women who want to stand out, Steel Garden offers smaller quantities so that the store feels very hand-selected and intimate. As for the future of her new shop, Denise raves: “I’ve received so much support from friends and family, and have had such a positive response. It’s far exceeded my expectations, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.”

every so often a rare building like 701 Whaley comes along—an opportunity for the future, a cornerstone on which a neighborhood is built. Once in a state of decay and exposed to the elements, this lovingly restored 1903 building now serves as the heart of its community. Looking ahead once again to bring another space to life—a place where music, theater, and dance will blend with the unique architecture of a former time—“The Y” and the site of its old swimming pool and gym will become a cultural asset for its community and help anchor the Vista’s Southside. Keep up with 701 Whaley and its progress on their Facebook page. 701 Center for Contemporary Art

gives back by engaging SC students. Each year more than 200 students participate in three youth orchestras. The orchestras encourage young musicians at various levels to deepen their musical education. And the education programs don’t stop there. Executive Director Rhonda Hunsinger is especially proud of Link Up. Offered in partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Institute, Link Up provides classroom curriculum to teachers and culminates with an interactive performance. “The first time

I heard students playing with our musicians, I teared up,” Rhonda says. “I had never seen elementary students at our concerts so completely engaged.” Music education is the place you would expect to find the SCP making a contribution, but some innovative thinking by Rhonda Hunsinger took things a step further. The Music for a Cause concerts support the work of seven non-profits each year. Each non-profit partner is featured at a Masterworks Concert. The partners can sell tickets to the concert as a fundraiser.

They also set up displays in the lobby of their concert to raise awareness of the work they do and take donations. Rhonda says Music for a Cause started after she was challenged by a donor to find a way to support other community organizations. “It was a learning experience for me to figure out how to see beyond my own non-profit’s mission and realize that our organization could help other non-profits, too.” Because Rhonda was able to see beyond the usual way of thinking, she’s been able to lead the South Carolina Philharmonic to another level of giving back.
