Hello, Jello

We’re bringing Jello back! Both edible centerpiece and art form in its own right, there’s a retro charm to Jello molds that we simply can’t resist. An elaborate, jiggling memorial to a time when labor-intensive dishes were all the rage, today’s Jello molds are a whimsical reminder to pursue whatever weird, fun party ideas we want. Big thanks to our friends at Spotted Salamander for creating the masterpiece on our front cover.

Hospitality.

H E R E I N T H E S O U TH , W E’R E P R ETT Y FA M O U S FO R I T.

Opening our homes and our lives to guests and friends comes naturally. For us, there’s no occasion too small to celebrate. There’s something both beautifully old-fashioned and wonderfully modern about throwing a house party. And while we appreciate the traditions of the past, we’re certainly not afraid to put our own spin on them. Having set aside many of the stuffy formalities and elaborate rituals of days gone by, we can still pick and choose what charms us most about our parents’ and grandparents’ eras. A big frothy punch in Grandmother’s silver bowl? Yes, please! Or, better yet, something with a little more kick? You bet! The way we see it, hospitality is a gracious expression of love for the people in our lives. It’s a way of sharing a piece of ourselves and an act of creative generosity. And by inviting friends into our homes, we’re telling them just how much we like and appreciate them. We’re not quite so concerned about using the right fork anymore— or whether it’s sterling, stainless, or plastic. Our only essentials for entertaining are bubbly conversation, happy guests, refreshing beverages, and good food. The spirit of hospitality is alive and well in Columbia, and we’re celebrating that spirit in this issue of Fig. Flip the pages to discover fun party tips and great fashion ideas—and then start planning your own spring gathering! Cheers! Caroline Black & Janet Scouten Meet the entire creative & talented team that makes Fig Columbia possible at figindustries.com.

Charley Scruggs & Sarah Simmons

FRESH FACE : recognized by Food & Wine magazine as one of the 50 best chefs in New York City, Columbia native Sarah Simmons recently opened the new Rise Gourmet Goods & Bakeshop on Harden Street in Five Points. Working alongside former Oak Table restaurant pastry chef Charley Scruggs, Sarah has created a unique and charming “Southern Boulangerie” serving the kinds of breads and pastries you’d find in a Paris bakery, but with a definite Southern spin. “I’ve always wanted a gourmet takeaway shop with breads, sandwiches, salads,

RISE GOURMET GOODS & BAKESHOP and packaged goods for entertaining, and Charley has always wanted a bakery, so the idea for Rise was a natural fit,” says Sarah. In addition to sweets and baked goods, Rise also offers take-home meals such as the highly popular Turkey Enchiladas, Ancient Grain Risotto, and Chicken Tikka Masala. “Busy families struggle with getting it all done and putting a great dinner on the table at night,” says Sarah. “We help them out by giving them a tasty meal that’s made from real, fresh ingredients. We cook from the heart at Rise, and everything is made with so

much love—it’s the next best thing to making it yourself.” For Sarah, the lessons of her Southern childhood still resonate: “Growing up in Columbia where southern hospitality is seen everywhere taught me an early lesson in life that going the extra mile with a smile makes all of the difference.” Learn more about Rise Gourmet Goods & Bakeshop and view their menu at risebakeshop.com.

From the

EXPERTS —

Columbia is full of great hosts who truly understand the art of hospitality. We asked what hospitality means to them!

Melissa Blanchard

Bruce Lawrence, Jr.

“Hospitality means making your guests feel comfortable. People in the South, especially Columbia, are by nature very friendly and hospitality is an extension of that instinct. Well, that and what your grandmother or mother instilled in you by example.”

“Hospitality is all about creating an atmosphere where you and your guests are comfortable enough to enjoy yourselves and the company of other guests while experiencing some of the things you and they love.”

Meagan Warren “The art of hospitality means always opening your doors to anyone. And, as Southerners, we all love good food, good drinks, and good company. Hospitality is a part of our culture, just like good manners and saying ‘yes ma’am’ and ‘bless your heart!’”

Anne Wolfe Postic Anne Reynolds “Growing up in a family that opened the doors to guests, visitors, and strangers has shown me the importance of relationships. Eating a meal with them. Slowing down long enough to learn something from the older generation and pass it on to the next. Entertaining doesn’t always have to be a formal occasion, so invite that friend you want to get to know better. Step out of your comfort zone and spread the love.”

“Hospitality is about making other people feel welcome, whether it’s for a formal dinner or a seat on your porch swing.”

Julie Brenan “The art of hospitality, to me, is bringing people into my home and making sure they feel completely comfortable. I probably don’t set the fanciest table and I am NOT a gourmet chef, but I love sitting around the table with all kinds of people, talking, laughing, eating, and drinking good wine.”

Rachel Hodges “I read this statement a long time ago and I’ve always lived by it...‘Greet strangers as friends, friends as family, and family with open arms.’”

Ella Dickerson “Hospitality allows you the opportunity to be creative and to share the things that you love with other people. It is an important part of our local culture because southern hospitality is real. The bar was set a long time ago and we have high expectations to meet.”

Maryanne Belser “We have much to celebrate with what is changing in Columbia, but at the heart of this city is a strong community that loves the sweet traditions, too. From keeping cheese straws in your freezer for that drop-by from a friend, to making casseroles for new babies, to throwing a cocktail party ‘for no reason,’ there are many little ways this community connects with its small town roots in our thriving, growing city.”

Tips for perfect

P A RTY PLA N N I N G Fresh Flowers “I always love to have fresh blooms on the table or near the appetizers when I am entertaining. Even if it’s just some clippings from the yard placed in a vintage vase; it makes a great impact.”

Party Prep “Create a relaxed environment by planning ahead with a timeline of what needs to happen when. Prep any of the food that you can the day before, like mixing together the salad dressing or chopping the vegetables. Chart out what food needs to be prepped, mixed together, or popped into the oven. The evening before your party, go ahead and have your house cleaned, the table set, and serving pieces out. Getting little things like this done the day before will make the evening seem way more relaxed—as you the host, will actually be relaxed!”

Family Style “I love serving brunches or dinners that are family style. Large platters of entrees and bountiful bowls of salads not only serve your guests, but also double as table centerpieces with all their textures and colors. Also, something about gathering around a long table and passing food to one another feels so communal and cozy, which is what sharing a meal at home together is really all about!”

From the

EXPERT —

Jessica Rourke, wedding planner, stylist, and Fig blogger, is a master of dream celebrations. Learn more about her at jessicarourke.com and read her blog at figcolumbia.com.

Fast Favorites “Start compiling a list of go-to hors d’oeuvres that are easy to make and crowd pleasers. Then when you are throwing together an at-home party, refer to that list to help save time. This is helpful too with impromptu guests!”

Proper Presentation “Begin collecting an assortment of platters and serveware. How you present the food is almost as important as the food itself! Create height with different pieces, add color and texture with fabric napkins, and mix in little bowls with dipping sauces. Having the right serveware makes even the most ordinary food look thought out!”

C O C KTA I L P A RT I E S with spring in the air, the time for get togethers with

friends and family couldn’t be better. No matter the occasion, you’d rather enjoy the festivities instead of scurrying around and pouring wine, serving beers, or shaking cocktails. So we’ve asked party expert and all-around bon vivant Kristian Niemi from Bourbon and Rosso Trattoria for his tips on making parties easier and more fun for the host.

Simple Setup “My biggest piece of advice for setting up a party bar is KISS… or Keep it simple, sexy! You don’t need every liquor and every mixer in addition to your beers and wines. Batch a couple of cocktails and your life will be SO much easier. One with lighter spirits like vodka or gin, and one with brown spirits like bourbon or rum. Put them in decorative dispensers or pitchers alongside a bowl of ice and garnishes and you’re all set!”

For beer and wine selections, Kristian also leans toward simplicity: “Two beers, one darker and more ‘craft’ and one lighter style beer. I tend toward River Rat Brewery’s Broad River Red Ale for the darker one, and their American Kolsch or Pilsner for the lighter style. For wines, I usually choose a crowd-pleasing red blend and a medium-bodied, unoaked Kristian Niemi of Bourbon and Chardonnay or bright Sauvignon Rosso Trattoria is a master of Blanc. Also, you can’t go wrong with cocktails. For more tips and a great Champagne or other bubbly!” recipes for his batched cocktails, visit figcolumbia.com.

A L I C I A’S S EVE N T I PS alicia barnes is not only known locally as a TV News Anchor on WOLO ABC Columbia, she is also a gracious hostess with a true spirit of hospitality. As this issue’s Fig Authentic, Alicia shares some of her thoughts on entertaining, as well as tips on hosting unforgettable gatherings.

Hospitality “From the time they open the invitation to the time they leave the event, I love for guests to feel appreciated. Whether it’s a personalized place card or a themed event, my attention to detail is my way of expressing my gratitude for our friendship.”

Entertaining “I think I get the hostess bug from my mother—she can whip up the most fabulous dinner party like it’s effortless. And my husband, Jacob, is a huge foodie so I feel like I’m married to my own private chef. So, yeah, we entertain a lot! I think my favorite part of entertaining is the mood in the air. With good food, friends, and a tasty beverage, it’s always a laid back, fun environment.”

Dining “My schedule is crazy busy but I can always eat. We typically like to hang out with couples who are foodies. If I could suggest anything, it would be to start hosting your own supper club. You would be amazed as to how many people really love food. Make your supper club events a mix of single and married people—coed gatherings are so much more interesting!”

At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors.

WE BELIEVE IN THE MISSION OF CENTRAL C A R O L I N A C O M M U N I T Y F O U N D AT I O N — O U R 2 0 1 6 S O C I A L M I S S I O N PA R T N E R . Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year.

the one sc flood relief fund was established in response to the massive flooding that occurred across the state of South Carolina in October 2015. The Community Foundation’s board has provided initial funding of $50,000 and thousands of donations have been received from across the country. Governor Haley’s Original Six Foundation has donated $50,000 to underwrite administration of the fund. In addition, a matching challenge gift of $100,000 was donated by the Lipscomb Family Foundation. 100% of monies donated are going directly to local organizations aiding those in need. Grants will fund relief and recovery assistance programs provided by nonprofit organizations in the 24 FEMA designated emergency counties. Over 600 homes benefited from the work of the 24 organizations who received funding through the first two grant cycles. However, an estimated 28,000 individuals were impacted by the flood. The need is still great and each donation received will help continue the work of rebuilding South Carolina.

donations to the one sc fund can be made in the following four ways: • Donate online at onescfund.org • Call 803.254.5601

There is a thin line between challenging students and inspiring them— actually it’s not that thin.

HERE’S TO

INSPIRATION.

JoAnn Turnquist, President & CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation

GIVING BACK : what makes people love where they live? And what draws new people

to a place and keeps them there?

JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation (CCCF), believes the answer to these questions is helping all our city’s residents feel welcomed and cared for. Under JoAnn’s leadership, the Community Foundation recently introduced “Connected Communities,” a new initiative to fund innovative projects that knit our community together, drawing new people to the Midlands and encouraging current residents to stay. These projects seek to make our community a warm and welcoming place with great public spaces and vibrant events.

JOANN TURNQUIST The financial support for these grants comes through the CCCF’s Community Impact Endowment and Field of Interest funds for the arts, which are comprised of gifts from generous local donors who make it possible for the Foundation to invest in our community, both now and in the future. “At the heart of what makes our community a wonderful place to live, work, and play are the folks who live here—the everyday philanthropists,” says JoAnn. “Philanthropy simply means ‘love of humanity,’ so anyone who takes time to help a friend, works with students learning to read, or donates to a charity, they become a philanthropist. And the more folks give, the more vibrant our community

becomes, making it a place where people love to live and others want to join them.” To learn about the projects funded by Connected Communities grant initiative, as well as to learn about how you can help make our community a better place, visit yourfoundation.org. The vehicle for philanthropy in the Midlands, Central Carolina Community Foundation is a nonprofit organization that links charitable people and businesses with areas of need in the Midlands of South Carolina.
