From coffee to castles to couture, Doylestown has an eclectic mix of restaurants and shops and is rich in art, culture, history, and education. Yet, what makes Doylestown really special is the people—the residents, visitors, and merchants. When Doylestown was founded by James Doyle in 1745 after he petitioned to build a tavern at the intersection of what we now know as State and Main, this town began as a place for social gathering. While Doylestown has grown and changed significantly from its start as Doyle’s Tavern, it still remains a place for locals and visitors alike to meet. Thanks to our business owners, museum curators, and restauranteurs, Doylestown is chock full of big city amenities, but with small town charm to spare. Stop and talk with our shop owners, many of whom left corporate America or careers in Manhattan and Philadelphia to share their expertise and talents with you. We couldn’t be more excited at the launch of Fig® Doylestown’s premiere issue. And whether you’re strolling through town shopping, dining at our numerous restaurants, taking in a movie or the latest museum exhibit, we at Fig® look forward to sharing all that is fresh, fashionable, and flavorful in Doylestown, PA.

AT FIG®, WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF CREATIVE THINKING TO TRANSFORM COMMUNITIES.

For 2013, we have chosen an innovative non-profit whose good works contribute immensely to Doylestown. Please consider supporting this worthy cause. Join us in welcoming our 2013 Social Mission Partner, the COUNTY THEATER.

“It’s really the audience that makes the County Theater who we are.” Chris Collier ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR ONE COULD SAY the evolution of the County Theater is akin to a Hollywood movie, but in Doylestown, it’s a story unto itself. Beloved, iconic, popular, and now digital and stronger than ever thanks to a generous and supportive community. “The County,” as it is affectionately known, opened in 1938 and had its heyday until television stepped in. Nearly going under, dedicated people stepped up and in 1992, the County Theater was saved and restored to the stately icon we know today. 2013 marks the 20th year since re-opening with John Toner as Executive Director and the first full year of switching to digital cinema, which was imperative in order to continue to

present first run movies. The County undertook a huge fundraising effort that was met with overwhelming response. “It was only because of the incredible support and generosity of our members and patrons that we were able to make the transition to digital,” says Associate Director Chris Collier. “We needed to educate everyone about why the transition was necessary and then we needed to ask for help.” Now they’re sharing that knowledge. Early in 2013, John and Chris were selected to present their digital cinema case study at the prestigious Sundance Institute’s Art House Convergence in Utah.

These days, when people can watch movies anywhere, audiences flock to the County Theater. Membership supported, everyone at The County knows without a doubt, their success is thanks to the community. “We bring culture to our screens with great movies and events, and essentially the audience ‘votes’ by buying tickets,” says Collier. “It’s a collaborative effort to find that right mix to make the theater experience work.” The movies are top notch, but as Collier puts it, “It’s really the audience that makes the County Theater who we are.” VISIT & LEARN MORE: 20 East State Street 215.345.6789 countytheater.org

Det Ansinn – The man with the BrickSimple Plan

“…We’re located in this great gem of a town and that’s important to me.” Det Ansinn OWNER/FOUNDER

AS OWNER/FOUNDER of the successful app development company BrickSimple, Det Ansinn could have located his business anywhere. Yet with an impressive resume and the world at his door, Ansinn didn’t choose a big city. He chose Doylestown. He chose home. When asked the proverbial question, “Why Doylestown?”, Ansinn, who grew up here, doesn’t hesitate. “We have the human capital and talent in this area between New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., and we wanted to be in a place with a good quality of life for that talent.” Founded in 2002, BrickSimple works with clients in the fields of entertainment,

06

financial services, and healthcare, from Fortune 500 companies to startups. In 2011, they moved from Dublin, PA to their central Doylestown location. With a high level of clientele, Ansinn understands the importance of a healthy and positive work environment, yet even he was surprised at the impact the move into town would have, saying, “We saw benefits from morale to creativity to the bottom line that I didn’t fully appreciate until we relocated the team here.” In 2005, Ansinn’s deep commitment to the community led him to serve on Doylestown Borough Council, where he

@figdoylestown

has been President since 2008. Wanting to make a difference, Ansinn feels Council is the best way to be directly involved in the town that he loves. As for BrickSimple, Det says, “We are a very creative place focusing on emerging technologies, a.k.a., ‘the next big thing.’ The qualities of town, being engaged with the community, first impressions with clients, and the employee’s everyday experience, have been a boost to moving here. We’re located in this great gem of a town and that’s important to me.” LEARN MORE AT bricksimple.com

authentic Chanin Milnazik – Woman on a Mission

“Empowering others to succeed is a mentor moment. If I can be that for even one person, that makes it all worth it.” Chanin Milnazik OWNER/FOUNDER BROWN DOG DESIGN

A Fig® Authentic is a hometown hero. They think big, they think of others. They move things forward to better the community while finding inspiration in the past. They are foundational in their thinking, open to change, and always authentic. CHANIN MILNAZIK founded the Women’s Business Forum to help women entrepreneurs rise to their potential. She turned a block party into an annual charitable event humorously titled, “The BluBall.” She was integral in developing First Friday in Doylestown. She’s donated her Graphic Design services to many deserving nonprofits. Chanin Milnazik, of Brown Dog Design, understands authenticity and for her, it’s all about the heart of community. A “change agent” and leader who loves her town, Chanin says, “People that know me, know that that my first reaction is, ‘How can this help the community?’” Being authentic also means going deep. What makes Chanin stand out is her drive to give back, no matter what. Even when it’s hard, even when the chips are down, even when you might get hurt. “None of that matters,” she says. “What matters, is it’s the right thing to do.” Initiating the Karen Walsh empowerment fund for the Women’s Business Forum in honor of her late mother rings true of that. “I see the potential in people, businesses, and non-profits and I work to make it happen,” says Chanin. “Seeing someone achieve the success they’ve dreamt of is very rewarding. People don’t often have an outsider who says, ‘You CAN do this’. Empowering others to succeed is a mentor moment. If I can be that for even one person, that makes it all worth it.” For example, she encourages people to “take someone out for coffee” to connect and discover. It sounds simple, but Chanin is already thinking beyond the coffee to the power and possibility of conversation. Chanin Milnazik lifts others up and it’s that spirit that shines through. Great design is all about the visuals, but for Chanin, it’s the passion of seeing the big picture that feeds the authenticity that benefits the community.

Meet new local businesses that are adding to the thriving texture of downtown. Look for our Fig® Fresh Face in every issue. “IT’S ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE.” That’s the message Doc Bakers’ pharmacist and president Angelo Greco wants people to know. Part juice bar, part restaurant, part “off the grid health care” as Greco puts it, there’s a new place in town that’s ready to feed the senses.

Doc Bakers is named for an 1800’s era Philadelphia pharmacist who practiced natural remedies and has ties to Greco’s family. Angelo pays tribute to the past while honoring the present with his custom “farmulations” made from cold pressed juice and plant based food, embracing local, seasonal, and organic produce. The cold press process involves fruits and vegetables that are carefully squeezed to extract the best parts of the whole plant. The magic results in a “live juice” that retains flavor and nutrients—plus enzymes. In addition to juices, smoothies, and shakes, the dairy free and soy free menu features salads, panini, breakfast, soups, and small plates. Most items are gluten free, plus cheese made out of cashews, cheesecakes made from avocados, milk from Brazil nuts, organic coffee, Kombucha on tap, and raw chocolate, emphasizing, in Angelo’s words, “all the good without the bad.” There’s a super cool kids menu too that will stand out to any nutrition conscious parent. Greco has a mission to inspire others and make a difference. “It is the food that brings us together. It is the food that will keep us healthy and ensure our quality of life,” he says. “Health starts with you and your ability to heal yourself from within.” With Doc Bakers, Angelo Greco is bringing a unique flavor to Doylestown, one that embodies his philosophies of sharing food and belonging to a common table. discovering art

Director of the James A. Michener Art Museum in the Byer ’s Gallery.

LISA TREMPER HANOVER Director & CEO of the Michener Art Museum 138 South Pine Street 215.340.9800 michenerartmuseum.org “As we celebrate 25 years, we continue to strive to be the most dynamic and vibrant cultural destination in the region.”

There’s a new face at the Michener Art Museum. In her first year, Director & CEO Lisa Tremper Hanover has given the Michener a facelift. And visitors are noticing. After leaving the Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College, where she was the founding director, Lisa Tremper Hanover set to work fulfilling her desire to take on new challenges at the James A. Michener Art Museum. Succeeding Bruce Katsiff as Director & CEO in July 2012, she has continued the museum’s trajectory.

16

figdoylestown.com

In the first few weeks in her new office in the old stone warden’s building of the former Bucks County prison, she mapped out her agenda: To bring a major exhibition on the life of Philadelphia native Grace Kelly, along with a companion exhibit on the Bucks County Playhouse, where Kelly got her start, to the museum. From Philadelphia to Monaco: Grace Kelly — Beyond the Icon, October 28, 2013 through January 26, 2014, is expected to draw more than 100,000 visitors to the Doylestownbased museum, where three galleries will be devoted to the story of her personal and professional life. Prince Albert has accepted her invitation to an opening ceremony.

facebook.com/figdoylestown

@figdoylestown

In addition, Hanover is coordinating a series of events to celebrate the museum’s 25th anniversary, kicking off with a Founders’ Celebration June 15. She has grown the museum’s exhibitions, reinterpreting works by the New Hope Impressionists and experimenting with space for an exhibit of paintings by contemporary classical artist Nelson Shanks opening June 8. Along with the growth of the building, Hanover is also growing programming and educational events, adding speakers, performers, and workshops, and reaching into different genres, such as poetry events.

If that’s not enough, she set to work renovating the museum’s Pine Street façade to highlight sculpture, landscaping, and the original stone wall. SO MUCH TO SEE AND DO! Located in the heart of the Cultural District, the James A. Michener Art Museum, named for the Pulitzer Prizewinning author and Doylestown native, showcases changing exhibitions of international art alongside its extensive collection of Pennsylvania Impressionism. An all-glass event pavilion brings the former stone prison-turned art museum into the 21st century. Celebrating 25 years of ART in the heART of Bucks County, the museum offers six new exhibits this season.

Doylestown

a hometown place with world class culture Coffee and commerce. Art and architecture. Festivals and foodies. Shopping and socializing. History and heritage. And we’re just getting started. Welcome to Doylestown.

k d you now? i D

the county seat, a few train stops from Philly, has the best in arthouse cinema, eclectic boutiques, and historic castles. Locals love it and visitors come back for more. Alive with culture, Doylestown is a feast for the eyes and the imagination, not to mention the palette. A plethora of unique buildings storied in history, the architectural experience is much more enhanced when you look up— the point where the buildings touch the sky is where the fun often starts. Watch where you’re going, but take time to visually absorb these fascinating façades. The National Trust of Historic Preservation must have done this when they chose Doylestown as a top 12 distinctive destination. While perusing through this walkable town of Victorian homes and pocket parks, look around to find something you never noticed before. A fun challenge, you might see a new shop, restaurant, historical landmark, or whathaveyou as you wander. Let us know what you find. We’d love to hear.

Roots run deep in this region for farming, and the fresh foodways, farm markets, and local farm-to-table sensibilities are a testament to the growers that raise crops and consciousness. CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture) are cultivating lots of members and there are approximately 50 farm markets within a short radius of Doylestown. The prestigious “DelVal” College knows a history rich in farming and agriculture, highlighting educational opportunities just outside of town. In this renaissance of healthy lifestyles, Doylestown feeds the well being of the community with nearby places of beauty and recreation. So whether you’re a walker, runner, cyclist, yoga or sports enthusiast, dog owner, fisherman, or rock climber, it’s all close by. Afterwards, there are plenty of restaurants and cuisines to savor. The quintessential Mercer

tiles are particularly unique to Doylestown, found throughout many a home, sidewalk, and Henry Mercer’s iconic structures. The James A. Michener museum rounds out the cultural district with its walls of wonder including the work of world-renowned and area artists. In good company with Doylestowners Mercer and Michener were local notables of history: Margaret Mead, Oscar Hammerstein, and Pearl S. Buck. One can only imagine what the conversation might be like around that dinner table.

Character, community, and culture. That’s here. That’s Doylestown. figdoylestown.com

Traveling to trade shows each year from New York to Milan to Paris to Israel, they continue to bring new and trendsetting frames back home, to the delight of their customers. It’s all about “fitting the frame to the face and the face to the frame,” as Robert puts it, also crediting his conscientious employees Erica and Tara for their great care with clientele. “We all take the time with customers so they feel comfortable and have a great experience finding the right look.” Giving back is part of the picture as well. FONTHILL CASTLE Visit Henry Mercer’s home for an up close and personal look at this 44-room architectural masterpiece. Fonthill is decorated with Mercer’s Arts and Crafts style tiles, prints, and the objects he collected from around the world. See the Saloon, where Mercer hosted guests like Henry Ford, and the Columbus Room, which tells the story of Columbus’ journey to the New World in tile. Tours of Fonthill Castle are one hour in length and reservations are strongly recommended. The Tower Tour for Families takes place on the first Saturday of every month. Special tours include the evening Behind the Scenes tours in March, October, and November and the Winter Wonderland tours in December.

MERCER MUSEUM

MERCER MUSEUM The Mercer’s concrete castle features an extensive collection of pre-industrial artifacts suspended from every surface. See a whaling boat, stage coach, and antique fire engine or uncover the mystery of the “vampire killing kit.” Young children will enjoy a scavenger hunt that takes them throughout the castle. The museum’s Martin Gallery hosts changing exhibits that are educational and fun for the whole family. From April 26-August 25, see the exhibit, Turning Points: Civil War, 1863-1864. Visitors will experience the war through the eyes of local citizens and soldiers. The exhibit commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and is based on the period collections of the Mercer Museum and Library.

The Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle host weddings, birthday parties, scout programs, camps, and adult and children’s programs. For more information, hours and admission, visit mercermuseum.org.

Matt Bender Board President

THE STANDARD CLUB, situated in the heart of downtown Doylestown, is part restaurant and part event space, but there’s something different happening there. They serve more than food. They serve the community. The Standard Club is a private Social Club with a membership whose mission focuses on promoting awareness and donating to those in need within Bucks County. Every six months the Club supports the cause of a different local organization. “There’s more than a restaurant within these walls,” says board president Matt Bender. “It’s the awareness that’s the big picture.” Currently, they are representing Ridge Crest Pediatric Care facility in Sellersville, which helps care for medically fragile and technology

dependent children. The Standard Club collects wish list items, features Ridge Crest on their menu, and provides updates as well as fundraising efforts.

“ There’s more than a restaurant within these walls.” Matt, along with the other board members, envisions the Club as a vehicle to inform the community, with members actively participating. The Standard Club is a place where people can simultaneously socialize and give back. “Fundraising can be centered around having a good time

and bringing people together, and we’ve had great support from friends, family, and the community,” says Matt. “The biggest spark in our mission is that we have the capability to bring good people together for the sake of helping others.” With its farmto-table restaurant located in a historic and prominent building designed by noted architect Oscar Martin, The Standard Club is well suited for meetings, events, fine dining, and its mission of serving in more ways than one. shiatsu transforms lives one touch at a time

HOW DOES SHIATSU WORK? Shiatsu moves stagnant energy, removes blockages, and creates balance in the body’s energy systems. By applying firm pressure to energy points, the flow of “chi” or “life force” is restored. Shiatsu practitioners help facilitate this change. The body then begins to heal itself and the receiver of Shiatsu begins to feel more empowered and responsible for small changes. Over time, the body begins to feel calmer, rejuvenated, balanced, and more energized.

giving back

At Fig®, we pay tribute to those in our community who think beyond themselves and selflessly give back to Doylestown. We thank you.

MIKE STACHEL REELS IN THE NEXT GENERATION OF FISHERMEN & WOMEN Doylestown residents know Mike Stachel as the man who saved the Borough Dam and the Youth Fishing Program. Stachel, owner of Mt. Lake Pool & Patio, is ever so humble, saying with a soft grin, “I’m a professional volunteer.” Nearly 20 years ago, Mike’s friend, Judge Ed Ludwig called on him saying, “The dam is in trouble, and you’re the Chairman of the Board to save it.” Mike had zero hesitation. Faced with a daunting task of overhauling a dam that was in deep water in the form of dollars and disrepair, Stachel went before Borough Council and said, “I know HOW to do this. I don’t know HOW I’m going to do it, but it won’t cost the taxpayers any money.” True to his word, Mike came through, with donations and volunteers galore, underscored by his unwavering tenacity. Now each spring, the kids help stock the fish in preparation for the community wide fishing day.

OPENING DAY! MARCH 30 8AM

“Seeing those kids catch the fish makes my heart smile,” he says, having grown up fishing at the dam himself. Doylestown Borough Manager John Davis knows what the power of one person can do for a community. Early on, Davis knew how horrible the conditions were at the Dam. Though he thought Mike’s efforts to help were admirable, he had no idea how Stachel would pull it off. Then he saw it for himself. “The unique thing about Mike is that he doesn’t do impossible, and he’s relentlessly positive.” Davis says. “At that point in my career, it radically changed my definition of what’s possible.” Later this spring, Mike is planning a second stocking of fish so that seniors and the disabled can participate, once again demonstrating the power of what is possible.
