welcome home, DOY LESTOWN Why would Santa trade his traditional sleigh for a vintage firetruck? Why would the local high school marching band wander off the field and into the streets? And when did cider and sweets become a major dietary staple? It can only mean one thing—the holidays have arrived in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. It’s time to set the tree aglow. Borough residents and visitors alike fill the snowflake-lined streets after a day of shopping on Black Friday in anticipation of the tree lighting. The grand display is followed by Hanukkah celebrations, visits to Santa’s cottage, museum open houses, and our favorite shopping day— Holiday Magic. And it all happens during the days between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. It’s a time to gather with friends and family—and also a time of giving. At Fig®, we encourage you to support independent, locally owned businesses this year. Purchase something unique from one of the beautiful boutiques on State Street, a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant, or a family membership to a museum or the County Theater. Give your time by volunteering to help hang the snowflakes in town. Whatever you decide, stay close to home this season, and gift local.

beyond the icon ON VIEW NOW through JANUARY 26, 2014
from
philadelphia to monaco
THERE COULDN’T BE a more exciting time here at the James A. Michener Art Museum with the installation of From Philadelphia to Monaco: GRACE KELLY—Beyond the Icon, on view through January 26. The Michener is the only U.S. venue for this exhibition, and every day the museum is buzzing with visitors drawn to the magical story of a Philadelphia native who went from movie star to princess. As I view Grace’s gowns, theatrical wardrobe, photographs, and film clips, I feel her presence very much alive in Doylestown. We are also featuring a companion exhibit, Local Mill Makes Good: Celebrating 75 years of American Theater at the Bucks County Playhouse. On view through March 2, 2014, the installation tells the story of this historic New Hope landmark, tracing the Playhouse’s impact on American theater as well as the regional economy and cultural life. Curator David Leopold brings together a collection of diverse material, including rare photographs and footage, and artwork by Charles Child, Ben Solowey, Al Hirschfeld, Robert Beck, and others. We are thrilled to acknowledge the support we have garnered for Local Mill Makes Good from the Bucks County Foundation, which is invested in our educational framework and our ability to tell compelling stories about Bucks County history through our exhibitions and programs. The Board of the Corporate Business Partner program and Silverman Family Partnerships have also provided significant funding for this effort. We appreciate this support and the opportunity to give the Playhouse a forum outside of its performance hall.

giving back
Jeanell Morgan SHE’S PERSISTENT. SHE’S COMPASSIONATE. SHE’S A MOM. “Hey, where’d you get that cool shirt?” That’s how lots of people find the great little shop across from the County Theater. Monkey’s Uncle (owned by wife and husband Jeanell and Derrick Morgan) is a sports fan’s mecca of retro t-shirts and more. For Jeanell, it’s a place that feeds her passion to help her community. It started with repeatedly meeting moms of kids with cancer and wanting to help. Realizing the store could be a platform, she thought, “I can be a resource and a voice to get the word out.” And so she is, by teaming up with organizations like the BE STRONG FOUNDATION, started by Tracy Ehleben, who lost her son to “ My customers cancer. They met when become friends. Jeanell organized a I connect with toy collection for local oncology patients. them, share my “Jeanell gives back, seeks experiences, and nothing in return and is help them sort driven,” says Tracy. “She is kind, caring, generous, through theirs.” and selfless. I’m so grateful that our paths have crossed.” An engaging shopkeeper, Jeanell isn’t shy about letting people know how they can help, but she does it with grace and compassion, saying, “It’s because I’m a mommy. That’s truly it. I’m a mommy first.” Causes hit close to home for Jeanell. The mom of a child with autism, she focuses on helping other parents. “My customers become friends. I connect with them, share my experiences, and help them sort through theirs.” Jeanell is quick to credit Derrick, saying, “He’s truly the reason we can do what we do. With his background in fundraising, it’s in his blood.” Jeanell and Derrick make a great team, even though they joke about being so busy: “We’re like Clark Kent and Superman, rarely in the same room together.” Hmmm, superheroes in Doylestown. We like it.

lose your eyes and reminisce of a time gone by, with the cozy comforts of holidays in a small town. Now open your eyes and look around at the sparkle that is Doylestown. Some would call it idyllic. Others might say charming. Longtime Doylestowner and owner of LAD Salon, Lynn Anne Donchez says, “Doylestown is a ‘Currier and Ives’ photo and we live in a town that most people dream of, where Santa dances in the streets and there’s real “ It’s a different hot chocolate!” Many of the experience older “children” in town may here. The vibe remember the effervescent is happy, less Stewart Montgomery, who frenzied, more played Santa for the better of 20 years, delighting kids enjoyable. It’s of all ages, gleefully awaiting a wonderful his arrival with their eyes as opportunity to bright as a Christmas star.
showcase the
Times change, but coming town and all it home for the holidays is has to offer.” a constant, with the best of old-fashioned customs – NERICE KENDTER, and new memories to last a busy bee toys lifetime. Of course, Santa is still the big celeb, as a couple of thousand people line the streets for his big entrance on the antique fire truck, driven for many years by Doylestown Fire Co. President Bill Cope. Santa is accompanied by a marching band decorated with antlers and lights and plenty of elves and volunteers alongside. Storytelling follows over at Class-Harlan Real Estate, including tales about Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. The magic of the season is alive and well in Doylestown. A place for friends to gather, families to reunite, college kids to come home to, and traditions to celebrate. Shopping and dining with the local flavor puts an added treat on the gifts that are shared. Sip a cozy coffee, bask in the warmth of a delectable meal at one of the many glittery restaurants, and bring your guests to world-class
museums. Visit the Mercer’s display of vintage holiday toys and winter wonderland surprises, or step back in time to the Grace Kelly exhibit at the Michener, where the splendor of her sophistication is on display through January 2014. Tie it up with a bow by perusing the many adorned shops in town. It all begins the night of Thanksgiving, with the first night of Hanukkah arriving early. The decorative snowflakes follow, marking the official unofficial start of the holiday season in the borough. Nerice Kendter from Busy Bee Toys loves how joyful the season is with neighbors and friends meeting in town and away from the malls. “It’s a different experience here. The vibe is happy, less frenzied, more enjoyable. It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase Doylestown and all it has to offer.” The annual Holiday Magic event is a favorite, with the shops open late and the town a festive flurry of friends and family. Thanks to Lynne Anne, carolers revel in costume, and Frosty the Snowman and a certain reindeer with a red nose show up each year. “The holiday season is about giving,” says Cathy Hoot, President of DBCA (Doylestown Business & Community Alliance). “Giving gifts, of course, but also giving our time. We depend on volunteers: the families who help decorate, the person perched twenty-five feet up placing a star on the tree, those driving by saying, ‘thank you’, and anyone who pauses to enjoy the season are all embracing the atmosphere here in Doylestown. Our hope is to spread our mission of bringing everyone together in a way that fosters the pride and spirit of our town.” Deputy Borough Manager Phil Ehlinger adds, “Preparing Doylestown for the holidays is a major annual community-wide effort, from Santa’s house and the recently refurbished Dreidel, to the Christmas tree set up with the help of the Doylestown Fire Company.” So c’mon home for the holidays. Whether you live in Doylestown or are just visiting, enjoy the good cheer and spirit of the town and take some back home with you.

HOME IS WHERE HER HEART IS Her business may be new to town, but she’s not new to the business. Owner of Streamline6 Communications, a full-service boutique public relations and marketing agency, Krista Sherkey knows how great it feels to come home. After all, she grew up here. As a military spouse, she moved about every two years. Landing back in Doylestown, Krista has quickly been embraced by the community both personally and professionally. “Doylestown is a very special place; you don’t realize it until you’ve lived elsewhere,” she says. “Being back has motivated and rejuvenated me to be involved in the community that I truly care about.” Motivated indeed; Krista is on the Board of the Doylestown Business and Community Alliance, is a corporate business partner of The Michener Museum, and belongs to the Chamber and the Women’s Business Forum. Streamline6 is a “one-stop shop,” serving clients big and small, from merchants on State Street all the way to large corporations. You should see what they are doing as a partner with inbound marketing company HubSpot. “I want to bring this amazing technology to our town,” says Krista. “If people utilize the content we’re developing, it will attract more visitors, and bring leads to our stores and businesses. We support each other in order to move the community forward for the benefit of everyone.” Krista extends that philosophy even more with her commitment to hiring military spouses, knowing what it’s like to try to maintain a career when you’re always moving.
“Being back has motivated and rejuvenated me to be
involved in the community that I truly care about.”
Krista’s roots go far back here. Her parents were high school sweethearts from CB West, her grandparents both went to Doylestown High School, and her great-grandparents immigrated to the US, settling in an existing Bucks County farmhouse. Growing up swimming at Fanny Chapman, Krista’s freestyle record still stands to this day, and to Doylestown’s delight, she’s still jumping in with both feet.

A TOUGH LADY WITH A SOFT HEART You may have seen an unusual sight around town, followed by double-takes, followed by smiles. If so, it might be Joan Doyle taking a walk with Tucker, her pet rabbit, in a stroller. But Tucker isn’t any ol’ rabbit. He’s an English Lop therapy rabbit. Yup, you read that right. Joan and Tucker volunteer at Wesley Enhanced Living and Center Square Towers, to the delight of residents. “He’s like a lap dog. He’s very gentle and friendly, so I thought it would be great to work with seniors,” says Doyle. The staff agreed. Surprisingly (ok, not really), they’d never had a rabbit visit before. The impact was significant immediately, as a recreational director told Joan about an advanced Alzheimer’s resident who remembered Tucker’s visit.
authentic Joan Doyle
Joan has had an atypical life. Widowed in her mid-20s, before moving to Doylestown she represented 20,000 people in Ossining, NY, and was the first woman elected to the governing Board of Trustees. A businesswoman with a marketing background, she is also a realtor and writer. Joan has served on Doylestown Borough Council since 2008 and is involved with the Doylestown Business & Community Alliance. She is passionate about causes near to her heart, like ovarian-cancer awareness.
“I think of myself as a free spirit, independent, and
Joan’s sister passed away from ovarian cancer, and for the last five years, Joan has led the “Turn the Towns Teal” ribbon campaign for awareness, noting, “If we can save one woman’s life, then we’re all winners.” A trailblazer, Joan became a passionate advocate for people. “I am truly a no-nonsense businesswoman who stands for my convictions. I think of myself as a free spirit, independent and practical, with integrity and a caring heart. I would do anything to help anybody.” Known around town as the rabbit ambassador, we can see what she means.

A TRUE FAMILY BUSINESS
hardware and lumber), they’re the hometown store for contractors, plumbers, builders, electricians, and families alike.
How many establishments can say they’re a 4th generation business, located in Doylestown for 88 years? Paul B. Moyer and Sons can. In this world of big-box stores, it’s more than refreshing to patronize a local business where, just like the old sitcom, “everybody knows your name.”
Speaking of family, out of about 15 employees, nine are family, and the rest might as well be, as most have been there for about 30 years. The original Paul B. Moyer was born locally in 1902. Known as “Grandpop,” Paul learned the trade of rebuilding batteries and electronic component repairs from his brother Charlie in the early car days of the 1920s and perfected his craft in the 1930s before going out on his own.
“If we can’t fix it, it isn’t broken”
“Moyer’s” is the go-to place for everything lawn and garden, both commercial and residential, and both sales and service, from lawn mowers big and small, to drills, saws, compressors, and everything in between. But wait. There’s more. They are also the exclusive Honda small engine distributor for Pennsylvania. Need a generator? Moyer’s has that. Jake Moyer, who runs the sales and service department with his brother Mike, sums it up, saying, “Essentially, we’re like a car dealer for lawn equipment.” With all the additional products (figure everything but
Common phrases heard around Moyers are, “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it,” and “If we can’t fix it, it isn’t broken.” With 88 years of expertise, customers can rest assured that they’ve come to the right place. By the way, there IS a next generation on deck, and Paul B. Moyer and Sons looks forward to many more years in Doylestown.
