celebrate

the season

there’s no place like doylestown for the holidays. With twinkling lights in the windows of borough

boutiques, it’s a place to embrace traditions of the past and create new memories for the future. It’s a time for gathering. It’s a time for giving.

Catch snowflakes, go sledding, see Santa, sing some carols, celebrate the holidays in your own way. The holidays are here and Doylestown promises a season full of cheer (not to mention all those catered parties!). Whether it’s strolling through an open house at the Mercer and Michener Museums, going to see The Nutcracker, or enjoying the varied offerings at the local shops and restaurants decorated for the season, the holidays are a time of giving—giving thanks, giving gifts, and giving back. Doylestown is a community that embraces these traditions in so many ways.

06

This will be Fig®’s second holiday celebrating in the borough. We’ve grown to love the business owners who enrich our borough every day with their generous spirits and open hearts. Doylestown truly is our home for the holidays. This holiday season, let’s celebrate all of the things that Fig® believes in: the power of thinking local, acting local, and shopping local. Let’s sleep in on Black Friday. Let’s skip the mall and shop at the businesses we know and love and celebrate the independence and passion that makes Doylestown special—this holiday season and all year round.

LOCAL

CHEER & festivity for all

is upon us again. Time for celebrations and gatherings, open houses and holiday parties. In a cozy place like Doylestown, there’s a welcoming feel as you stroll in and out of stores, restaurants, taverns, and lightadorned places all over town. And did we mention the new Santa house? After a tree crashed through it last year, the elves have been hard at work and all will be unveiled in time for children to share their Christmas list with Santa. As tradition has it, Santa will ride into town on an antique fire truck. He will be accompanied by the high school marching band—arriving at State & Main—where the crowd will help countdown to the tree lighting while the high school choir sings holiday songs. Then in mid December, shops in town will be open late to celebrate the annual “Holiday Magic” event, followed by a Hanukkah Songfest just a few days later in front of the giant dreidel. Sponsored by Temple Judea, the evening will feature songs of celebration, dreidels, and lots of Hanukkah gelt—chocolate coins. The holidays bring good tidings, well wishes, and a winter wonderland of smiling shoppers to town for old-fashioned, small-town experiences in boutiques filled with new and exciting gifts and treasures. So stay local this holiday season. Shop to your heart’s content. Make a reservation or two in your favorite restaurant. Kick back with a hot toddy at a nearby establishment. Grab a beverage with lots of whipped cream, and sing sing sing the celebration of the season. Santa arrives: Friday, November 28, 6 pm Holiday Magic: Friday, December 12 Hanukkah Songfest: Wednesday, December 17

fresh face: “If you go to Italy, this is what you get. It’s a very old school way of making pizza.” – Roberto Carollo, co-owner

spuntino

you might think you know pizza.

But after you visit Spuntino, right inside the Main Street Marketplace, you may rethink. Yes, it’s called pizza, but it almost yearns for a different name, one that will represent its uniqueness. Spuntino specializes in the authentically Italian Neapolitan style—wood-fired and delicious. Brothers and owners Salvatore and Roberto Carollo grew up making pizzas in their family’s restaurant and have now developed their own special recipes. “Once you taste it, you know the difference”, says Roberto. “If you go to Italy, this is what you get. It’s a very old school way of making pizza. We love our heritage and we’ve learned so much from our family. We hope our passion for what we do shows through in our product.” The brothers pride themselves on customer service. “We’re here every single day, very

much like a local boutique,” says Sal. “We have a lot of repeat customers. We know each other by name and that’s one of the things we love most in a small town like Doylestown.” Roberto adds, “The restaurant business is in our DNA. Our parents worked extremely hard for our futures, and we’re very thankful. We want every single customer to leave here more than satisfied, and can’t wait until their next visit.” The food speaks for itself, like the traditional Schiacciata, a pizza dough sandwich cooked in the wood-fire oven—hot and crispy on the outside, but cool on the inside. In addition to the yum factor, the pizzas take just 90 seconds to bake, from start to finish. Spuntino is BYOB, with space for about 20 people. So stop in, sit a while, enjoy the pizza, and be sure to say “hi” to Sal and Roberto.

there’s a hero to puppy dogs in

Doylestown by the name of Stasia Thompson. A dedicated volunteer, Stasia is currently with Almost Home Dog Rescue in Doylestown. As a meeting and event planner by day, she knows how to use her time wisely and is happy when her experience can help the dogs, whether it’s fostering, reviewing applications, planning fundraising events, conducting home visits, or posting on social media about rescue efforts. “Volunteering with the rescues is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done,” she says, “and I don’t even feel like I do that much.” (We beg to differ.) It all began when she and fiancé Dominick Parzanese adopted their beloved cats Emma and Talulah, and their dog Athena, who many locals know from daily walks through town. “I’m so proud to see Stasia do this work selflessly to

save dogs’ lives, because every little bit counts,” says Dom. Stasia adds, “I just try to spread the good word and teach people about fostering and adopting, the importance of spaying and neutering, and putting an end to puppy mills. People don’t understand. Spay and neuter initiatives are making a difference yet thousands of dogs and cats are being killed every day.” More volunteers are needed, but Stasia says, “You don’t have to volunteer 20 hours a week. You help when you can. If a lot of people each do a little, it will have a huge impact.” Stasia loves that Doylestown is very dog friendly, with a dogfriendly culture. “When we walk around with ‘Adopt Me’ vests on the dogs, the adopt rate increases significantly,” she says. So look for Stasia and Dom and the dogs at local events. Say “hello” and get involved. The dogs will thank you, and so will Stasia.

michelle wiley

michelle wiley is about as authentic as you can get. A virtuoso jazz pianist and

vocalist, she teaches music, performs at weddings and private parties (plus her regular jazz gigs) including the Doylestown Arts Fest. Michelle grew up around music, but didn’t truly find her own voice until college as a music composition and voice major. Her mother was classically trained in piano and violin and her father was a jazz enthusiast, playing sax, clarinet, and piano, but Michelle had a hard time understanding piano early on and didn’t become a full-fledged pianist until grad school at the renowned Berklee College of Music. Inspired to help others, Michelle developed a children’s music project called “Welcome to Staffland” for kids to learn and understand music in a fun way. Think Sesame Street meets Alice in Wonderland, surrounded in a world of music. “My goal is music literacy for every child by school age,” says Michelle. “It is an achievable goal.

Music education is as important as any other subject in school, but programs have been drastically cut and many children don’t have that opportunity.” Michelle’s background is vast. She sang vocals for Coca-Cola® and Chef Boyardee® jingles and had her own jazz gigs during college, playing with Ella Fitzgerald’s bass player Keter Betts, who even helped with her harmony homework. She worked for 20th Century Fox and co-wrote the theme song for the film “An Unmarried Woman.” Oh yes, and there was that world tour she performed on with Steely Dan. “Music opened up the world to me”, says Michelle. “I want every child to have that opportunity. You’re literally empowering a human being when you open their lives to music.” Michelle is doing just that, now chairing the Committee for the Riverside Symphonia Caprio prize, awarded for outstanding young musicians.

welcome to our home at

historic aldie mansion for 57 years, Heritage Conservancy has continued to preserve and protect our natural and historic heritage. Along with conserving critical lands in this region, our organization is committed to preserving historic structures that impart identity and a sense of place and pride in our community. We’ve designated over 600 structures on the Register of Historic Places, and we maintain this database to recognize the architectural integrity and historic significance of the properties. A quintessential example of the preservation work that we do is the adaptive reuse of Aldie Mansion as our headquarters. Aldie Mansion began its history as a beloved private residence when William Mercer, younger brother to Bucks County’s renowned historian and architect Henry Mercer, commissioned the mansion in 1925 along with his wife, Martha. For quite some time, Aldie Mansion was full of life, with the Mercers often hosting international luminaries such as Groucho Marx, Isadora Duncan, and the von Trapp family, who sang for guests from 24 85 old dublin pike 215.345.7020 heritageconservancy.org

the Great Hall balcony during a Christmas party. The mansion eventually fell into disrepair and abandonment until it was deeded to our organization in the late 1980s under the premise that we restore the mansion to its original grandeur. After years of rehabilitation work with assistance from local community support, our organization remained true to its word. By adaptively reusing historic Aldie Mansion as our headquarters, we safeguard the unique history of this structure and its landscape for the heritage of our community. We’d love to invite you into our home! To take a guided tour and learn more about the history of Aldie Mansion and its importance in our community, or to find out how you can host your own special event at the mansion (events generate revenue that helps us to maintain the mansion!), contact us at 215.345.7020 or visit HeritageConservancy.org.

Pete Hartkorn, Nick Torcini, and Al Torcini

fresh face: “Much is still the same, but with new equipment to maintain cars better and take care of customers at a higher level.” – Pete Hartkorn

doylestown auto & tire center

there’s a new kid in town. OK, two new kids. OK, three. But actually, they’re longstanding businesses with new owners, and chances are you’ve either driven by or driven in on multiple occasions. Meet brothers Nick and Al Torcini, owners of the two Doylestown Auto and Tire Centers—Liberty Gas and Smiths’ Auto and Truck Service. Nick and Al were drawn to Doylestown, though on different life trajectories. Nick recently married and thought Doylestown would be a great place to raise a family, while Al has four kids getting closer to flying the coop every day. He sees Doylestown as a place to settle into when the nest is empty. The brothers want the community to know they stand behind their service, as Nick notes: “It’s our goal to carry on the same level of business as the previous owners who were here for 40 years.” All their auto repair techs are ASE (Automotive

Service Excellence) certified, and they provide jobs for 40 local employees, including high school students. Many of the former employees are still there, including manager Pete Hartkorn who’s worked at Liberty for nearly 25 years. He says, “Much is still the same, but with new equipment to maintain cars better and take care of customers at a higher level.” That includes amenities like lifetime warranty on parts, shuttle service, wi-fi, and even iPads for customers to use while waiting for service. The brothers give back too, recently donating $2,500 to the Borough Dam Project and continuing their annual “extreme car makeover” where locals can nominate a deserving person who can’t afford repairs. So call for service, check out the redesigned North Main location (State Street is next), and if you’re lucky, you might even see Franco the French bulldog while you’re there.

social mission

At Fig®, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of Bucks County Opportunity Council—our 2014 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this holiday season.

celebrating 50 years with chef jose garces Talk about the best

birthday party ever! The Bucks County Opportunity Council kicked off its year-long 50th anniversary celebration on October 4th with an exclusive event hosted by celebrity Chef Jose Garces at Luna Farm, his family’s 40-acre private retreat in Ottsville. 2015 marks the 50th year the Opportunity Council has helped low-income families throughout Bucks County achieve economic self-sufficiency. Proceeds from the event will help the organization fulfill that mission. An Iron Chef and proprietor of more than a dozen restaurants in six cities, including Philadelphia, Garces began the evening with a VIP meet and greet, followed by dinner prepared with fresh farm-to-table ingredients grown on the property. He addressed the group during dinner to welcome the guests to his home and share his sentiments.

“Together, we can make a powerful difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors in need in Bucks County,” said Garces. The Opportunity Council has served more than 462,000 Bucks County residents since its founding. Using a multifaceted approach to help motivated, hard-working people leave poverty forever, the Opportunity Council provides coaching for education and job performance, works to prevent evictions, and provides reliable transportation and nutrition assistance. Every $1 invested in its programs saves the community $4 in welfare subsidies.

50th

anniversary

The 50th anniversary campaign will continue throughout the duration of 2015 with anniversary events including the Adopt-A-Pantry food drive in May, Adopt-A-Family and Give A Christmas in December, Self-Sufficiency Graduation, and the 2015 Anniversary Finale Party.

The campaign is made possible by generous sponsors including: Applegate Organic and Natural Meats, PECO, The Intelligencer, Bucks County Courier Times, National Penn Bank, Mark and Mimi Worthington, Tara Riedley Foundation, Hardwick Benfer, LLC, Univest, Celebrity Cruises, Infiniti of Willow Grove, Bob & Pam Byers, First Federal of Bucks County, Lore & Bob Eichfeld, Curtin & Heefner, LLP, Comcast, First Savings Bank of Perkasie, Dad’s Hat Whiskey, Karamoor Estate and Photos by Hillary.

2015 marks the 50th year the Opportunity Council has helped lowincome families achieve economic self-sufficiency. Your investment can provide food for a family that is hungry, car repairs so they can make it to work, or guidance from our experienced coaches to complete their education and find better employment. The Opportunity Council stands apart by bringing all of these resources together to provide the support for those that long to permanently leave welfare and overcome poverty. just beyond the south of town,

business is booming at the ‘barre’ and working out has taken a whole new direction. Take a bit of ballet, mix in some Pilates, a dash of yoga, and you’ve got the latest fun workout movement. Barre3 hit the ground running nationally six years ago. Lauren Ziel is the owner of the Doylestown and Newtown locations, and joined the craze after falling head over heels for the workout herself. She first tried it while seeking a new workout that she actually looked forward to, rather than it being a chore. She tried an online class and loved it. Then she did another. And another. And another. For the first time ever, she was looking forward to working out. After experiencing the barre3 community in person, Lauren knew it would be a hit in this area. Barre3 is a one-hour, full-body workout that

incorporates isometric holds with small ranges of motion to dive deep into muscles, focusing on length, strength, flexibility and balance, while targeting the deep layers of the muscle. The focus is on whole body health, a full-body workout within a supportive community, and, of course, rockin’ music. Barre3 is located in the Shoppes at Blueberry Hill situated in a light-filled space with great ambiance, plus a cork floor providing a natural cushion, which is also anti-microbial. Members have the added bonus of using the Newtown location as well. “The whole boutique fitness industry is really booming right now, and it’s especially nice to be in an environment where everyone knows your name,” says Lauren. “When I opened in Newtown, clients who were driving up to a half hour would say, ‘I wish we had something like this in Doylestown.’” Now they do.
