“I love every minute of living here, and at this point in my life, I could be here forever. I really do love my local.”

AUTHENTIC

Chris Clark

loving local

Hey, who is that guy? That’s what Chris Clark often hears. Moving here sight unseen from Louisiana, his journey began as a music major in college, then on to pursuing his passion in Austin, New Orleans, and Baton Rouge, with a rockabilly-surf-punkcountry band along the way. When he and his wife headed north to raise their daughter, they found Doylestown. It had everything they were looking for, plus the added bonus of being a hop, skip, and a train trip to NYC, where Chris could feed his love of jazz.

With an unwavering focus on family, Chris wanted the type of job where he could meet his daughter after school. That’s when he found Nonno’s, where he’s been somewhat of the coffee ambassador of town ever since, even earning the nickname, “Captain Americano.” “It’s about priorities and what’s important to you,” says Chris. “The reason I wanted to move here was the education, the lifestyle, and the small town appeal with a Euro feel. I love every minute of living here, and at this point in my life, I could be here forever. I really do love my local. Building new relationships is what makes small

town living so special.” Speaking of special, Nonno’s owner Andrea Serio gets it, saying, “I have been stopped many times by people saying how great and friendly Chris is. He treats Nonno’s as if he were entertaining guests in his own home. That’s a quality that shines through, and one you don’t see very often.” Chris is ready to get more involved in the local music community. A self-described “hollow body guitar fanatic” who also plays sax and piano, Chris confesses his dream of someday opening up a boutique guitar store in the borough. He even has a spot picked out, so stay tuned.

FOOD for THOUGHT “It really is a destination location because you have so many choices. The nice part of our town is that restaurants provide a personal touch and a memorable dining experience, along with the superior food.” – Matt caffrey, chambers 19

food. The centerpiece of many gatherings

and much joy. The sustenance of a celebration. The first half of dinner and a movie. The happy hour specials. The business lunch. The live music and bar menu. The snacks for the big game. Say the word “food” around Doylestown and mouths start to water, dinner reservations are made, plans are arranged, and/or spontaneity abounds. As Doylestown has grown in culture, popularity, and offerings, what could be better than yummy food accompaniments before or after a museum visit, watching a movie, a shopping excursion, or simply planning everything else around the meal itself? Locals and visitors are flocking to the fresh array of savory and flavorful cuisine in this walking

wonderland of gastronomy. With spring just around the corner, get ready to dine in the shine of the sun as the outdoor patios start prepping for the season. Like world cuisines? Doylestown has it. Prefer local fare? Doylestown has it. Can’t resist a good plate of pasta, healthy salad, comfort food, a big ol’ steak, sushi, vegetarian, gluten-free, or all of the above? Well, you may need to come back more than once or twice or thrice. Bring the family, bring the friends—Doylestown has something for every palate. You get the picture. With its plethora of delectable delights, the borough has become a destination for foodies near and far who are looking for a gourmet alternative to the city, while experiencing fine or casual dining in a small town with a metro feel. And now that the farm-to-table movement is part of the vernacular, restaurants (and the brand-new food co-op) are sourcing from local farmers more than ever before, and that’s good for everyone. A chance to have the freshest produce while supporting local farms is a win-win in our book. There’s craft beer, there’s fine wine, there’s BYOB, smoothies and ice cream and soup, barbecue and chocolate—there’s even fancy olive oil to taste and take home for your own gourmet meals. There’s eat in, take out, fly-by pick up, dining al fresco (soon, people, soon!), a quick lunch, a catered event, a leisurely dinner, or a late night snack. And coffee. Let’s not forget the coffee. Hot, cold, fancy, simple, meet up for a cup before or after your walk around town.

When you come to Doylestown for a meal, you get more than food. You get the experience. A chance meeting on a café patio turns into a new friendship, a quick conversation in a store brings several referrals for great restaurants, and an unexpected encounter with a new food you never tried before is icing on the cake. There’s something about the atmosphere of a community where the locals know the restaurant staff and the visitors feel like they do. Matt Caffrey, owner of Chambers 19, offers his take on the local scene and his many restaurant peers. “It really is a destination location because you have so many choices,” he says. “The nice part of our town is that restaurants provide a personal touch and a memorable dining experience, along with the superior food.” So c’mon over. You can watch the game, have a romantic date night, grab a beer and wings after work, close a deal, have a picnic, order a pizza, and of course, there’s always popcorn and gourmet chocolate to accompany a movie at the County Theater. Doylestown and food. It’s a small town with big flavor. Our compliments to the chef.

As you flip through these pages of Fig® Doylestown’s first-ever Food Issue, we hope you discover all the great places that make Doylestown so absolutely delicious. Dig in!

delightful and delicious in doylestown. Have you seen the orange awning across from the County Theater? It’s an inviting and colorful entry to the latest addition to East State Street. But here’s the twist. You may think they’re the new kid on the block, but really they’re not. Genevieve’s little corner panini shop has been open since 2011 (and still is), but co-owners Genevieve DiFilippo and Karen Bryant have always had a vision to open a full-service restaurant. In fact, Genevieve had her first restaurant job at age 12 and the rest, shall we say, is history. Genevieve’s Kitchen is now open and has already garnered a buzz around town. It’s no wonder. The food is fresh and delicious, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the tagline says it all: “pure. simple. good.” Genevieve is all about using the freshest ingredients. “For me, it’s just real,” she says. “I want people to be excited about the food they’re being served. By keeping it simple and not layering on too many ingredients, the flavor of the food really stands out.” Try seasonally inspired sumptuous delights like Winter Chicken stuffed with spinach and parmesan, braised and finished in a tomato red wine sauce, or the grilled fresh ahi tuna with lemon-caper pesto, or farro with chickpeas, greens, and fennel, for a start. There’s brunch on the weekends, and pretty soon there will be plenty of outdoor dining, including a brand new patio with bistro tables out front.

FRESH FACE

When Genevieve and her partner Karen moved to this area, they never looked back. Relocating from DC and leaving the corporate world, Genevieve felt the support of the community right away. “Doylestown is so embracing and welcoming,” she says. “We felt that from the day we opened the panini shop, and it’s flowed over into the Kitchen.”

GIVING BACK

John LaSala

a local life of service

You’ve probably seen him around town. In the co-op. At the coffeehouses. Over at the conservancy. John LaSala is the very fabric of Doylestown, and we are lucky for that. After saying goodbye to corporate America, and the tragic loss of his wife to cancer in 2001, John felt a calling to shift focus, help the community, and improve the environment, starting with a memorial fund in his wife’s honor and being a star fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure. John was on his way to fulfilling his life’s mission: “I can’t fix the world, but I can make my corner of the world better and I can make it bigger.” Going back to college for a Sustainable Building Advisor certificate, John conducted a full sustainability analysis for the Heritage Conservancy and now co-chairs the farm-totable dinner. In 2010, when his best friend and dance partner, Karen, was losing her battle to cancer, undeterred, John stepped in to help. After her passing, he joined with Karen’s daughter, Chanin Milnazik, founder of the Women’s Business Forum, in establishing the Karen Walsh Fund to raise money for women entrepreneurs. John now serves on the advisory board and organizes the very popular bowling fundraiser. John is relentless about promoting causes he believes in. Did we mention the food co-op? There from the start, he just finished working 24/7 for 4 months as the volunteer general contractor, doing everything from demolition to decoration. Though member based, John wants everyone to know that you don’t have to be a member to shop there, and now that the store is open, maybe John will (finally) have time to devote to his own venture as a Sustainable Business Advisor for his new company, Green Box 123. We hope so. He deserves it. 20

I can’t fix the world, but I can make my corner of the world better and I can make it bigger.

modern marvels at the michener The Michener Art Museum is proud to present exciting, original exhibitions this spring that celebrate internationally recognized artists from Bucks County. Led by the Michener’s own Connie Kimmerle, Curator of Collections, Paul Evans: Crossing Boundaries & Crafting Modernism is the first comprehensive survey of Evans’s work. Known for conceptualizing furniture as sculpture and abstract composition, Evans (1931 – 1987) established a reputation as a creative designer of unique, sculpted-metal furniture. This exhibition will be on view from March 1 – June 1, 2014, and then travels to Cranbrook Art Museum in Michigan. In June, the Martin Wing will house monumental steel and bronze sculptures by Quakertown resident Steve Tobin. Tobin is perhaps best known in this country for his three-ton bronze sculpture, known as Trinity Root, which was inspired by the 70-year-old sycamore tree that shielded Trinity Church against falling debris during the collapse of the Twin Towers in 2001. His creative oeuvre spans more than twentyfive years and multiple mediums, including glass and ceramics. His work has been exhibited widely in Europe and Asia, and is held in the collections of major international institutions. The Michener will install several large-scale steel root sculptures, both inside and outside of the museum complex, from June 28 – October 26, 2014, along with a variety of bronze, ceramic, and recycled metal objects. I hope you find these exhibitions as exciting and engaging as we do, and that you’ll make a visit to the Michener Art Museum part of your Doylestown experience.

At Fig® we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions— one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of Bucks County Opportunity Council—our 2014 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this spring.

SOCIAL MISSION “ We believe that empowering people with the education, training, and the resources necessary to permanently leave poverty is far more beneficial than helping them cope in it.”

when opportunity knocks The Bucks County Opportunity Council is about to turn 50, and the mission is clear—to help low-income people in Bucks County achieve and sustain economic selfsufficiency. Whether in an emergency or for the long term, the BCOC fulfills and fortifies many in our community, helping them leave poverty behind through the Economic Self-Sufficiency (ES) program. Coaches are partnered with participants and help them on their way to changing their lives for the better. Development Director Jessie Marushak sees the paradigm shift firsthand. “We 36

We see courage and human spirit manifest in almost unfathomable ways; whole new worlds open up to individuals and families who learn to thrive and, best of all, pass on their new life to the next generation, creating a far-reaching impact.” The BCOC reaches directly into the community with projects like the Hope of the Harvest Charitable Garden. In partnership with DelVal College who supplies the land, and Philabundance, to date, the garden has produced an astounding 50,000 pounds of produce.

Around 150 volunteers (including many from the Doylestown Food Co-op) tend the garden and distribute the produce to food pantries, so those in need can have fresh fruit and veggies. There are even more success stories to celebrate. Over 250 people have graduated from the ES program with an average salary increase of $39,000, and every dollar invested saves the community $4 in welfare subsidies. With plenty of opportunities for businesses and individuals to get involved, let opportunity knock on your door for the opportunity to change someone else’s life.
