in good taste old-fashioned fourth of july at Fonthill Castle.
Home swim meets at Fanny Chapman. Sicilian pizza at Nat’s. Afternoons on the merry-go-round at Burpee Park. American flags lining the downtown streets. There is something so special about our little town in the summertime. For many of us, summer in Doylestown evokes cherished childhood memories. It was always a time to explore, savor the season’s freshest fruits and vegetables, run barefoot along the sidewalks—and, well, just be kids. As a parent, I realize the importance of sharing these traditions with my son and giving him the summer memories that started with Doylestown’s landmarks, restaurants, boutique shops, and abundant activities. It is this Doylestown—the Doylestown that still embodies the nostalgia of our past, but embraces the uniqueness of our future—that makes our town exquisitely “In Good Taste.” Throughout this issue, I want to share with you all of the flavors that make up the savory secret that is Doylestown. From the wideranging menus of our downtown restaurants to the enlightening exhibits in our museums—each of these aspects add up to an eclectic diversity that provides Doylestown with its own unique taste. There is a delightful juxtaposition of sophistication and small town friendliness that can only be found while strolling down the center of town in the midst of summer. Join me in celebrating the beauty of the summer season, and read on to see how Doylestown’s amenities truly embody the notion of “In Good Taste.” With gratitude,

authentic : MAYOR RON STROUSE eager to experience the fast-pace and excitement of our
nation’s capital, Mayor Ron Strouse left bucolic Bucks County to attend American University in Washington, D.C., getting his first taste of politics as a sophomore when he became a congressional intern for the representative of his home district during the Lyndon Johnson Administration. A mere six years later, he became the youngest Chief of Staff in Congress at the time. But after his boss retired, Strouse went through a period of soul-

searching, eventually settling on the hospitality business as his next career. After an intense culinary apprenticeship, Strouse went on to manage two boutique restaurants in Bucks County. A couple of decades in the arduous hospitality profession once again led Strouse to a spell of personal reflection. Introspection involves digging in your own soil—eventually, you find your roots. Having served on the boards of the Bucks County Tourist Commission and the County Theater, Strouse decided to run for mayor of Doylestown.
A sign of authenticity is always taking a little of your home soil with you, no matter how many times you’re repotted. It means that, for you, your town isn’t just a tourist destination; it’s a diverse, vibrant community. “Creating a dynamic, workable community like Doylestown doesn’t happen by chance,” says Strouse. He’s making sure that Doylestown remains true to its roots by staying true to his own. Learn more at doylestownborough.net.

when our military men and women
return from overseas, they’re often still faced with difficult challenges. They come home and wonder about their next step in life. Fortunately, the Travis Manion Foundation, named after 1st Lt. Travis Manion, is there for them. Travis made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq in 2007 when he drew fire away from his wounded comrades, all of whom survived. The Foundation’s nationally-recognized 9/11 Heroes Run began as a grassroots effort to remember Travis’s service, but 8 figdoylestown.com
soon became a symbol for all the men and women who have given their lives since 9/11. “The run is our way into the community,” says Ryan Manion Borek, Travis’s sister and current Foundation president. “It lets people become connected to what we do.” One of the most valuable partnerships the Foundation developed is with local Delaware Valley University through a program called “Mentorship & Advocacy Program for Veterans.” This internship helps veterans not just find jobs, but their next career. The Foundation also gives
back to the community by helping create a sense of community. “We have so many great runs here in Doylestown,” says Ryan, “but there’s no run with the same sense of patriotism and pride for all that is great in America.” The last words Travis spoke before his fateful deployment in Iraq, “If not me, then who,” are at the same time an energizing inspiration for his fellow citizens, a remembrance of those who have fallen in combat, and a source of local pride for Doylestown. BRAYDEN MORGAN The Doylestown community is a beautiful patchwork of young and old alike. In each issue, our Fig® Kid section will feature a local Doylestown child with a unique story and an amazing talent who loves to call Doylestown home. not every child gets to have a super
power, but eight-year-old Brayden Morgan’s oil pastels, colored pencils, and markers transform him into an articulate, proud, and enthusiastic modern-day Van Gogh.
10 figdoylestown.com
Brayden, a young Doylestown local, loves to draw. To him, art is pure bliss and a way for him to express himself when he struggles to find the correct words. After being diagnosed with autism at an early age, drawing provides Brayden with a calming experience and an inner peace. Two years ago, while newly embarking on his art-filled journey in first grade, Brayden created a Rembrandt-style self-portrait that was chosen to be exhibited in the Central Bucks District Art Show. Since then, Brayden has started taking comic strip classes after school. Here,
Brayden has learned to retain what he is taught in the class and to draw and color comics from memory. Art is also a form of communication for Brayden—not only does it help him connect with others, but it also teaches him to channel his ideas in an imaginative way. Although Brayden is a very verbal child, he occasionally lacks the typical back-andforth conversations that most eight-year-old children have. Through his artwork, Brayden gets the opportunity to talk about and share his talents with the community.

fresh face: BUCKS COUNTY ORTHODONTICS everyone loves a fresh face
when it’s accompanied by warm affability, refreshing sincerity, and a welcoming smile. That’s just what you’ll get when you visit Dr. Welsh’s Bucks County Orthodontics, whose motto is “Smile Bigger. Laugh Louder. Live Better.” Doylestown responded by welcoming Dr. Welsh as the successor to the late Dr. George A. Bullock, whose practice Dr. Welsh purchased a year ago. “This community gave me a chance to earn their trust,” says Dr. Welsh, “and I can’t thank them enough for that.” Though Doylestown lost a beloved pillar of the community when Dr. Bullock passed away, they have
good reason to smile now that Dr. Welsh has established himself. In addition to his impressive résumé, which includes both dental and orthodontic degrees from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Welsh provides cutting-edge orthodontics in an atmosphere where both patients and parents can relax and kids can have fun. Dr. Welsh’s state-of-the-art office comes complete with complimentary Wi-Fi, a Movie Theater, interactive gaming systems, and beverages including tea, hot chocolate, and Starbucks coffee. Dr. Welsh also maintains a five-day appointment availability, including late
nights and early mornings, and makes himself available for questions by providing his personal cell phone number. But Dr. Welsh’s reputation is built on more than exceptional skills and old-fashioned customer service—he also gives back to the community that’s embraced him with open arms. “We support multiple local charities and sponsor dozens of local events and teams,” says Dr. Welsh, “including donating full sets of braces to CBAA Coaches vs. Cancer and sponsoring Relay for Life, the iRun4Life Kids Only 3K, CB Cares, and the CBFYMCA Summer Camp.” Now that’s something that has us smiling!

ALUMNUS SPOTLIGHT Maggie at age 5
For Maggie Villari ’13, M.A.’15, it is about more than improving the lives of people; her passion is protecting and advocating for animals. “I want to effect social, positive, and progressive change in the animal welfare field.” As an undergraduate studying zoo science at DelVal, Maggie saw the “business side” of zoos. “I read about human mistakes that animals paid the price for, and recognized the person I was learning to become didn’t fit in with my morals and values.” Maggie decided to pursue her Master of Arts in Policy Studies at DelVal. Policy studies is the systematic study of public policy—the nature, goals, conflicts, causes and effects, with an emphasis on how to achieve goals. It combines program evaluation with policy analysis. At DelVal, the program’s mission is to prepare leaders in developing policies that protect the planet and improve people’s quality of life. By continuing with her graduate education at DelVal and earning a master’s degree in policy studies, Maggie gained the credibility and training to channel her passion. “Ultimately, DelVal allowed me the ability to apply what I learned in the degree to a career in animal activism,” she said.
“DelVal allowed me the ability to apply what I learned in the degree to a career in animal activism.”
Maggie is currently serving as the district leader at The Humane Society, where she serves as a liaison between the organization and the Philadelphia community and lawmakers. Additionally, she’s interning at The Humane League, where she was primarily responsible for the research portion of a campaign advocating for better quality of life for chickens. “The campaign is hoping to persuade popular casual dining chains to source their eggs from farms that do not use battery cages,” she said. “The small, wire cages provide insufficient space for egg-laying hens, leading to distressing and miserable lives.” As a continued animal advocate, Maggie wants to use her education to reduce the amount of suffering animals have to endure. “I want to be in a place of power and credibility to project my passion to a wide audience, to show—and not force —people how to treat all living things with the respect and value they deserve.”
