MERRY & BRIGHT The holidays bring a host of traditions and much-loved rituals: sipping hot cocoa by the fire, hanging strings of lights, shopping for that perfect gift. And in this City rich with culture and filled with inspiring people, these traditions are infused with even greater levels of joy. As we whimsically count down the twelve gifts of City life from our true love, Lancaster, we continue to be dazzled by all this place has to offer. For every type of person in every stage of life, Downtown Lancaster is a vibrant and glittering home for the holidays. For the art lover, the fashion finder, the earth mama, the vintage soul, or even the café surfer, this City is a-glow with possibilities. Yet even in the midst of winter festivities and revelry, Lancaster doesn’t forget about those with the greatest needs. In this issue of Fig®, we celebrate people like Paul Pearce at Water Street Ministries who have made it their mission to serve from the heart, bringing light and life to the hungry and hurting among us. Celebrating the wonder of the season, the team at Fig® thanks you for sharing this year of Lancaster’s local dining, dynamic performances, creative events, sophisticated shopping, and innovative art. Best wishes for a very local Holiday! Deborah Brandt, Owner, Moxie House

A LANCASTER HOLIDAY TRADITION FOR OVER 280 YEARS Winter is the season to connect with the people—and places—we love. But before you gather together friends and family at your table, you’ll need to gather your ingredients. Find everything you need for a memorable, local meal at Lancaster Central Market: a dash of history, a pinch of warmth, and a whole lot of community. Oh—and don’t forget the food: Beef, ham, or chicken make a mouthwatering centerpiece for your holiday table. Find crusty breads so fresh and flaky that your aunt and uncle might arm wrestle for the last piece. Pick up an array of local cheeses and pickled vegetables in the Pennsylvania German tradition for your appetizer tray. And yes, there is still produce in season: leeks, parsnips, apples, and potatoes to name a few.

“When my 1950s style over-the-shoe rain boots, inherited from my mother, sprung a leak in New York City while traipsing through slush, I panicked. Although they never fit properly, I loved the convenience of slipping a boot over my shoes and braving Mother Nature's worst.”
FRESH FACE ®
After what most people would have simply chalked up as a fashion disaster moment, Joyce Burkholder began percolating her concept for Gads, a reinvention and improvement on vintage galoshes for modern women. As she began imagining retro-practical rain boots that could be worn attractively over heels and flats, Joyce’s attention to detail drove her to create a well-designed product that would both fit well and last for years. At the same time, her impeccable sense of style inspired her to design them in an array of fabulous colors, topped by a touch of sparkle.
“I owed it to women who wear nice shoes.” Knowing that too many women have ruined too many pairs of shoes, Joyce felt passionately about pursuing her invention: “I owed it to women who wear nice shoes.” Now that her product is on the shelves— both locally and on-line—Joyce is excited to introduce Gads to today’s stylish yet practical women. When people discover Gads for the first time, says Joyce, the first thing they exclaim is: “I’ve always needed these and didn’t know they existed!” The gift of Gads is perfect for the girl who has everything—yet has the good sense to protect it. It’s for the girl with “GaditudeTM,” which as Joyce explains, is “a way of living that makes the world a better place; an attitude of gratitude.”

PCA&D’s DESIGNERS CONNECT WITH COMMUNITY
YOUR PLACE TO PREPARE FOR A LIFE IN ART
For the past four years, faculty and students at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design have led one of our best-known projects: the 24-hour Designathon. Designathon has linked PCA&D with over two dozen nonprofits serving more than 200,000 people in Lancaster County. And we’ll do it again in February 2013 with a new group of nonprofits because PCA&D is always involved with the community in creative and influential ways. SO, WHO’S IN THIS PHOTO? Go to pcad.edu/news to see PCA&D faculty, students, and the nonprofits we’ve worked with during Designathon.

AUTHENTIC Paul Pearce Water Street Ministries
As the vice president of Advancement for Lancaster’s Water Street Ministries, Paul Pearce’s path has taken a significant turn. After 32 years of thoroughly enjoying a corporate career—most recently at a multinational conglomerate based in Lancaster—Paul now spends his days serving the city’s poor and homeless. While the sound-bite version of this life transformation seems impossibly altruistic, Paul tells the story a little differently. Back in January of 2008, Paul confessed to a good friend: “I’m having stirrings of discontent.” His friend then recommended a book, Half Time by Bob Buford, which asserts that the second half of life can be better than the first, focusing on the transition experience—or “half time” —when a person catches a new vision for living. Entering into this “half time” prayerfully and thoughtfully, Paul asked himself:
“ W hat am I really good at? What does significance look like? What is most important to me?” And through these questions, Paul acknowledged his gifts and talents, understanding they were transferable to a second career of greater significance than his first. Then he got into an argument with God.
“And you know you never win those arguments,” Paul said, laughing. A man of faith who had been living in the practical world, Paul explains: “I used to think the only people called by God were ministers and missionaries.” Yet as he sought to transition cautiously from one life stage to the next, Paul sensed a calling to Water Street Ministries that became impossible to ignore. During the application and interview process for the Water Street position he now holds, his then-corporate job was eliminated. “God does move in interesting ways,” asserts Paul. Through his journey from discontentment to a place of great peace, Paul Pearce has discovered that his ultimate purpose exists outside of himself: “The reason I’m here is not for me.” And as he considers his unlikely yet inevitable path to Water Street, Paul takes great comfort in knowing that God is very much at work. To make your own impact for the good, include Water Street Ministries in your charitable giving this year. “Your donations to Water Street continue to help changing one life at a time,” says Vice President of Advancement Paul Pearce.

THE DISTRICTS
VOICES
The Districts are the real thing.
As their indie-rock sound seeks out that achy and elusive spot between melancholy and joy, touching down at various points along the spectrum, this band is quickly becoming more than just a local favorite. Walking away with top honors at the Beta Hi-Fi Festival at the World Cafe Live in Wilmington back in early September, The Districts have a big future ahead of them.
“You can’t help but listen to the new music of young artists and ‘hear’ the past influences. Rob Grote has a distinctive voice and draws you into the music. Check out their powerful live performance which you can check out on The Key Studio Session at xpn.org” — Helen Leicht — Their recent album, Telephone, has an emotional and slightly off-kilter sensibility that resists easy definition. With tracks like “Where We Started” and “Funeral Beds,” this is the kind of music that burrows into your subconscious and stays a while. A bit of blues, a little folk, a lot of rock, The Districts’ sound is an amalgam that the band members themselves can’t quite pin down. Grote explains, “Our music is a raw and natural representation of our feelings.” Drawing inspiration from Lancaster County’s rolling countryside and wooded vales, this band is a product of its natural surroundings. And while future successes may ultimately pull The Districts away from this place, says Grote: “No matter where we go, Lancaster is always going to be home.” For more on The Districts, including videos and music, check out thedistricts. bandcamp.com or visit facebook.com/ thedistrictsband.
Helen Leicht David Dye
Sounding like a band you’d find down by the riverbed, this young Lancaster County four-piece performs songs that stretch beyond their years. Lead vocalist Rob Grote has a voice from another era, with shades of gravel and broken glass, while Mark Larson, Connor Jacobus, and Braden Lawrence round out and smooth the edges with a percussive, waltzing virtuosity.

At Fig ® , we envision a different kind of publication— one that energizes a thriving, sustainable local economy. We believe in the power of creative thinking to transform a community.
For us this means finding ways to support non-profit organizations that foster creativity and educate people about the power of innovation.
Power Packs Project is combating childhood hunger here in Lancaster County through a weekend educational and nutritional food program for eligible families. The program was started in 2005 as a response to children returning to school on Monday mornings showing secondary signs of hunger. Each ‘Power Pack’ includes a low-cost recipe and its essential ingredients, as well as additional pantry staples. Power Packs Project now serves 25 schools across 8 school districts— that’s over 800 families and their children—with the help of its dedicated volunteers.
We believe that awareness of opportunities helps people to make informed personal choices or to find the encouragement they need to make a difference.
Girls on the Run is a transformational learning program for 8 to 13 yearold girls. We teach life skills through dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

art have a creative holiday
In Lancaster we are blessed to live in a place where artists’ visions are forming and becoming reality. Give memorably this holiday. Giving a piece of original art supports local artists, the creative community, and keeps the creative spirit alive, year round. So here’s to the New Year and the many galleries that make Lancaster a thriving arts destination.
Freiman Stoltzfus celebrates Lancaster’s vibrant seasons at his downtown gallery. This November and December, he features new original and printed works in a variety of media, and is pleased to introduce his ornament designs, perfect for holiday gift-giving and collecting.
With a personality as vibrant as her paintings, Belgium born artist Christiane David has taken art to a new level in Lancaster County. Walking into her Lancaster gallery on Prince Street is like walking into an enchanted world of color.
Featuring art by Cindy Schlosser and period reproduction furniture by Joel Bare. Substrates include wooden bowls, antique panels and shutters with a unique character all their own, and other antiquing finds.

NORTHGATE on LEMON STREET Once some of the city’s more decrepit and decaying properties, the row houses at 14-24 East Lemon have been refurbished by long-time broker and realtor Marilyn Berger into luxury residences that perfectly capture the essence of today’s downtown living. With no detail too small, the facades of the Northgate properties on Lemon Street have been restored to their original turn-of-the-20th-century appearance, including charming front porches with enormous curb appeal. The interiors of these exquisite homes are far from a throwback, however, with up-to-the-minute modern amenities. In the kitchen, home cooks will appreciate Bosch stainless steel appliances, a travertine stone backsplash, and dark polished granite countertops.

The floor plan of these 1,700-square-foot homes reflects today’s lifestyles, with a finished basement, an open great room on the first floor, and a dignified master—including a light-filled walk-in closet, laundry, and en suite full bath—on the second. The third floor is a delightful surprise with a second bedroom, another full bath, and a dreamy view from a panel of four side-by-side windows. Honored with a prestigious award by the Charlotte Street Association for renovating an existing structure, Marilyn and her partners at the Hammer Group haven’t stopped at reclaiming this stretch of East Lemon. Instead, their ambitious plans have involved resuscitating the entire corner of Lemon and Queen Streets into a glorious residential block, making it one of the hottest spots in the city. Just across the gated courtyard—complete with secure, well-lit parking—is Northgate on Christian Street. The former warehouse has been completely transformed into luxury condominiums, whose crown jewel is a 4,200-square-foot unit covering the entire first floor.

The spacious top floor of the fully renovated building has been divided into two units of 1,800 and 2,200 square feet, each with two bedrooms, two full baths and exposed, angled wooden trusses that add unique character to the space. Even with its stunning views of the city, the building is so well-insulated—as are all of the properties at Northgate—that ambient street sounds are virtually inaudible, lending an unexpectedly peaceful quality to downtown living.
Dave & Kathy Cassidy in their Northgate loft. “We love the convenience of the city and the sophisticated nature of our space.”
