BETHLEHEM
INSIDE t MUSIC from Stephanie:
Marie and I talked about making the cover look like a concert poster. Mike got some great pics at Godfrey Daniels - we really liked the one wall that's plastered with music photos and I think there's an instrument hanging. Other good ones are of the steel cogs at Steel Stacks. I like the imagery that Marie found from CBGBs of one image duplicated in a Andy Warhol-type of way; very grungy, a bit dirty and cool. People are starting to say the South Side is Bethlehem's Brooklyn; I like that feel. some of the trestle photos may be cool for the different squares. Thoughts?

B E T H L E H E M ’ S S O U N D S, TA S T E S & S T Y L E S Bethlehem’s artistic side has been shining bright, lately. Our city is known for its rich Moravian history and its groundbreaking steel manufacturing, but the arts are on deck to take their place alongside The Christmas City’s main attractions. In recent years, turning the Bethlehem Steel Corp. grounds into a hub of music, arts, and history has set the stage for Bethlehem to become the new and hot must-see venue. BuzzFeed recently listed SteelStacks as one of 19 Insanely Weird Concert Venues to Visit Before You Die, alongside the Hollywood Bowl and Red Rock Amphitheatre. But this is just the tip of what Bethlehem’s arts community has to offer. Dig a bit deeper and you’ll find some great little galleries, open mic nights, jazz bands, and playhouses. I admit, I’m not a going-out-at-10 pm-to-see-a-band kind of girl, but I know it’s out there if I’m ever in the mood. Our city definitely has something for everyone. From upscale art houses to vintage pop culture shops, marionette theater to Broadway musicals, underground rock venues to jukebox-playing pubs—Bethlehem’s art and music scene is all around us. Join me in celebrating the sounds, tastes, and styles that make this city so exciting. Rock on, Bethlehem!

the slogan “often imitated, never duplicated” is intended
to invoke the notion of being the gold standard for a particular endeavor. Nothing captures the essence of the Liberty High School Grenadier band better than this saying. The band has become such an institution that PBS has selected them for its next documentary. The band formed in 1926 and became known as the ‘Grenadiers’ in 1966, when they first donned their iconic red uniforms with tall bearskin headdresses, modeled 8 figbethlehem.com
after the famed infantry regiment of the British Army. In 1967, the band made its first trip to the celebrated St. Petersburg Festival of States, marking not only the band’s first victory on a national level, but the Grenadiers ‘dynasty’ at the Festival, now known as the Suncoasters of St. Petersburg. While many high school bands are seen as tangential to a sporting event, the Grenadiers command respect in their own right. No one knows this more than the band’s current director, Kevin Long,
a Bethlehem native who played trumpet as a Grenadier when he was at Liberty. “You’re not really a band geek,” Kevin says, “you have a place of respect in both the school and the community.” Much has changed in the world in the past ninety years, but the passion, virtuosity, and rich pageantry of the Liberty High School Grenadiers has remained an enduring tradition and an authentic touchstone. if you’re feeling dispirited
by life’s dissonant symphony, harmony can be restored just by crossing the threshold of Stephanie Bealer’s new Metta Relaxation Co. on West Broad Street. The simplicity of her space’s industrial design is intentionally uncluttered and crafted using refurbished materials repurposed into minimalist furniture and fixtures. Stephanie’s vision for Metta Relaxation Co. coalesced during a harried career in advertising and graphic design. “I felt the need to help people,” she says, “as opposed to sell them things.” When she switched
to nutrition counseling, it was evident that the root cause of most people’s troublesome relationship to food was stress. “When you’re under a lot of stress,” she says, “you don’t make good choices.” Her interest in relaxation techniques emerged from that epiphany. Metta Relaxation Co. offers a medley of services from which you can choose whatever suits you best, from traditional physical work like massage, reflexology, and yoga to floating tanks where the salt solution is denser than the Dead Sea.
“While floating, you are free from gravity and external stimulation, allowing you to relax in a meditative state while the outside world melts away. It’s likely to be the most relaxing thing you’ve ever experienced,” Stephanie says. The word “metta” is translated as “lovingkindness,” and from the moment you walk in the door, everything about Metta Relaxation Co. embodies that principle. Learn more at mettarelax.com.

At Fig®, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors.
We believe in the mission of Lehigh Valley Girls Rock— our 2015 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year.
lehigh valley girls rock is a nonprofit organization that seeks to empower girls and foster their self-esteem with creative expression through music and the arts. Lehigh Valley Girls Rock is made up of musicians (Kelsi and Felicia make up local band Moonstruck), designers, artists, teachers, volunteers, and other women of the Lehigh Valley who are passionate about the mission and the organization. Focusing on inclusivity and affordability, all girls are encouraged to participate in the events and reap the benefits. Each summer they host a one-week long camp for girls ages 10-17 where they can learn to play an instrument, form a band, write an original song, and perform in concert. Additionally, different speakers offer workshops on art, stage presence, positive body image, and even yoga classes. “We nurture an inclusive community for all girls and women by promoting collaboration, developing positive relationships, and encouraging effective communication. We use creative expression and Rock to strengthen each girl’s inner voice and help her become the confident and self-aware person that she aspires to be,” Kelsi says. Be on the lookout for LV Ladyfest (an annual fundraiser show) and the second annual LV Ladies Rock Camp, which will both be happening in spring of 2016. if you’ve spent time in bethlehem in the past 40 years, then
you’ve definitely heard of Godfrey Daniels, the legendary live music listening club on East 4th Street. Unlike your typical choices for entertainment, Godfrey Daniels offers a unique experience. Godfrey Daniels is membership-supported and volunteer-run, hosting Open Mic nights and monthly jams where amateur artists can improve their skills or simply play for the love of making music with others. This tradition goes all the way back to 1976, 28 figbethlehem.com
making it the longest-running Open Mic in the Lehigh Valley. In addition to their staple of musicians, they’ve also hosted poetry readings, stand-up comedy, and even improv. For Managing Director Ramona LaBarre, improv is a testament to Godfrey Daniels’ creative alchemy. “It’s an art form that’s unique to the moment,” she says, “skits that aren’t rehearsed, have never been seen before, and will never be seen again.” Godfrey Daniels goes beyond the promotion of individual performances
to the advancement of the arts in general. “Many local arts organizations are strengthened by our partnerships,” Ramona says, “such as WDIY public radio, Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild, SouthSide Film Festival, and the Touchstone Theatre.” Though Ramona’s never taken the stage herself, she’s adamant that Godfrey Daniels’ unique mix of art, fellowship, and education is a performance worth repeating.
