Five years ago, we weren’t thinking about Fig®. But we were thinking about how we could bring together our cool little city, package it and help people see what an amazing community we have. It was August. In eight short weeks we defined our product, created sample pages and pedaled our concept boards block to block and shop to shop. We wore heels. It was hot. It was humid. It was humbling. No one knew us and no one knew what we were talking about. And then ... we found some supporters. A few bold business owners who could see past the unknown, feel our energy and were willing to invest. We published the first issue of Fig® in November 2005. There were the doubters, those who said “that’s not really our town.” There were the skeptics, those who claimed it would never work. There were the resisters, those who preferred to stay with the ways that were tried and true. But slowly, our community began to find Fig®. And they were happy. They were happy because Fig® reflects all that is good about the City of Lancaster. And there is a lot of good. Fig® is about much more than stunning photography and inspired design. It is about a shared pride in our community and a celebration of the independence, tenacity and passion that makes the City of Lancaster unique. Fig® is about all of us and what we love. So we say thanks to those who have traveled with us. For being the inspiration for Fig®. For standing by us because you, too, believe in the power of unity. For supporting the businesses, the causes and the ideals that have made the word ‘fig’ mean something. Together, we have shown that thinking local, acting local and being local can make a difference. As we celebrate our 5th anniversary heading into the holiday season, it’s easy to remember some of the early inspiration for Fig®. Our gloriously independent, owner-operated businesses, our breathtaking historic city streets, our dynamic farmers markets and our energetic creative scene. Five short years ago, we thought of the City of Lancaster as a treasure hunt. It was a bit of a search tracking down the really cool gems nestled about. Now, we still have really cool finds, but they’re everywhere. Down every block and around every corner, we still enjoy the charms of Lancaster that drew us and constantly find new things to adore. "Follow your inspiration" is one of my favorite sayings! Living downtown, I walk, wander and enjoy looking at the eclectic range of architecture. Artists like to make things. Fooling around one day, I scored and folded a sheet of white watercolor paper, and was amazed at the light and shadows, created with just a few folds and cuts. Always at the right place at the right time, I teamed up with Moxie House and the rest is paper history. Architecture is a passion, I hope when people see the buildings on the cover and in the window at Fig Central, they will be inspired to look, really look at the beauty of Lancaster City in a new way. Zap & Company, an anchor for the 300 block of North Queen Street, may be most well known to city inhabitants for Hilda, the stylish sidewalk mannequin who has been standing guard for over 20 years. To those in the know, Zap is a mecca for one-of-a-kind retro fashions that offer a stylishly unique, cool quotient. Step inside the shop and you’re likely to meet the energy behind the enterprise — a tall slender man with a thick mustache and long hair pulled back in a ponytail. Steve Murray, owner and operator of Zap & Company. With a passion for vintage and an eye for design, Steve has cultivated a unique collection of clothing, barware, accessories, books, albums and movie posters for more than 30 years. Reviews from Zap visitors rave and customers come regularly from New York City and Washington, DC to scan the racks and comb the aisles. Zap's niche collection has been a resource to the film industry for decades. Apparel and accessories from this local, vintage clothing gem has appeared in an impressive collection of both independent and big budget films. While his influence is far-reaching, it is a passion for our local community that helps keep Steve rooted. What many don’t know is how Steve Murray is committed to championing for the betterment of the City of Lancaster. He’s been an officer in the Merchant's Association, chaired the Special Events committee and led a collaborative group of retailers on the 300 block to advocate for city beautification. He was pivotal in leading the fight to preserve the Watt and Shand building from being demolished, by developing an unlikely coalition with local doctors, lawyers, retailers, residents and a former mayor, which ultimately led to a preserved facade and an an exciting new enterprise in the city. His energy for the City of Lancaster is unfailing and always taking a new form. In reflecting on recent city events, he mentions the Keys for the City piano located at the corner of Queen and Walnut, and how its placement, as well as the initiative behind it, was the culmination of what he has worked so hard for all those years. He recalls how one night a few months ago, as the sun was beginning to set, someone stopped at the piano and began to play a beautiful tune. Steve says he stopped what he was doing, made his way to the storefront and listened to the music fill the block. It was one of those rare moments he was able to sit back and appreciate the spoils of all his hard work in helping the city he loves become more than it was when he first opened his own city doors. LEARN MORE: thefulton.org/youtheatre This is the season of celebration and the perfect time of year to reflect on the work of the Fulton Youtheatre; an ensemble of at-risk, disadvantaged, and disabled young people dedicated to creating art with a message of hope that celebrates the human spirit. All of the performances are offered free of charge to the public, but goodwill donations are collected at the door, every penny of which is then given to a charitable or social service organization whose work connects to the theme of a given production. Recent recipients have included Free the Slaves, CASA of Lancaster County, and two local refugee service providers. The Youtheatre teens also engage in community service year-round. Now, at this holiday time, they send “Season's Greetings” to everyone in Lancaster and a “Thank You” to Moxie House for all it does for our community every day of the year.

When you meet Kingsfoil, you don’t immediately think melodious singer-songwriters with a passion for bonfires and burritos. With their cool band presence and growing musical accolades, the four from Kingsfoil might seem hard to reach. Happily, they are just a group of friendly guys with a lot of talent who love to make good music.

With roots as an acoustic duo, original band members Jordan Davis and Tristan Martin bring a powerful edge to the harmonies that lead today’s four piece. The Kingsfoil sound has a strong regional following that has begun to attract lots of attention. Recent airtime on WXPN has started to push them beyond the local music scene. Lead singer Jordan describes the group as an “indie rock band with a sharp focus on songwriting.” Recently he and co-writer Tristan have “gotten more into arrangement and writing” like the songs recorded for their new album, On Our Own Together. As a result, their music is reaching a more mainstream audience than ever. With this in mind, it would be wise for us to catch Kingsfoil locally while we still can. When asked about the Lancaster music scene Tristan says, “It’s one of the best places [to play].” “We do a lot of traveling around, but Lancaster always feels like home,” adds Joe. Collectively the group says their two favorite places to play have been the Chameleon Club in Lancaster and World Cafe Live, next to the WXPN radio headquarters in Philadelphia.

Every class at EPY is designed to encourage anyone who walks through the studio door to connect with their personal power, regardless of what that means for them. Occasionally, it may be about doing a perfect backbend or finally reaching their toes. But for most of us (even our teachers and most advanced students), being powerful is usually much simpler: maintaining a steady breath throughout the practice; finding balance in a basic pose; feeling fully present in each moment. No matter what our physical ability or starting point, these seemingly simple goals are the ones that transform lives. They are the things we often forget to do in our everyday lives, and the things that can remind us to slow down and be thankful for every moment we receive.
OUR CLASSES AT EVOLUTION POWER YOGA HAVE A REPUTATION FOR PROVIDING PEOPLE WITH A GREAT WAY TO STAY IN SHAPE. After all, when “Power” is your middle name, students usually expect a good workout. But what many people may not realize is that the physical poses we teach in class are relatively meaningless. Yep — you read that right. All those complex poses you may have seen on magazine covers, TV, or even in our ads? They’re all just things people happen to be doing with their bodies while they practice yoga.
PERSONAL Sure, the poses and sequences we teach can help you find alignment and balance within your body, and there’s no doubt yoga can help you build strength and flexibility. But our goal at EPY is to help students go beyond those physical poses — to go beyond their preconceived notions of what they can or cannot do — and to connect with that little bit inside each of them that is truly amazing. That is what “POWER” means to us. We believe that power is not something you gain; it’s not something you achieve by earning more money or holding a longer headstand. It’s something deep within you that no one else can take away. Personal power is the thing you were born with that makes you who you are when you’re at your best. It’s what you feel when you love what you’re

They become powerful not just in the situations where they feel confident, but in the unknown moments of confusion or fear. INSPIRATION: ORDINARY PEOPLE CREATING EXTRAORDINARY COMMUNITY Twenty-year-old Zach Love does no disservice to his name. A sophomore at Millersville University, he has a real passion for youth leadership and volunteerism. While keeping up with his studies, Zach spends his free time serving with Student Senate and his fraternity. He also volunteers at Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminars, focused on developing youth for a life of leadership. Through his work with students, Zach realized that they might not always know about the leadership training opportunities available to them, or have the ability to pay for those opportunities. He realized that he wanted to do something that would benefit these aspiring leaders for years to come. “You can make a bigger impact if you do something for the future rather than just for now. I want to see the effect years down the road and want to impact as many students as possible,” said Love. Zach established the “Love for Youth Leadership Fund” at the Foundation, a field of interest fund that will grow over time to help teens pursue youth leadership opportunities, including conferences or workshops. “If [students] don’t have this funding, then how are they going to find out about leadership opportunities?

I think it’s important that they get on the path to becoming a leader,” he said. By leaving a legacy for the Student Senate to build on, students will help to carry on the cause by contributing to the fund and spreading the word to others who would like to donate. Zach hopes the fund will inspire and motivate others and prove that no gift is too small to make a difference. “Many people know that there are students out there that care about the community, but this [fund] is something permanent that shows that we are capable and serious about making a difference.”
