one idea can change everything.

I remember it was a Friday night in August of 2005 when I had the idea to create Fig. I called my friend Tracy and shared it with her; she was used to hearing my wild ideas. That was the beginning. One decade later, you hold in your hands the culmination of that single thought. This very special issue commemorates the 10-year anniversary of Fig. It’s a timestamp of positive change, a measure of this City’s growth, and a fiercely beautiful labor of love. A lot can happen in ten years…and a lot has. How do we celebrate the passage of time? Is it measured in seconds or by firsts? Fig was there as the City watched the arts’ scene come alive—as Gallery Row was born. Fig was there as the City’s foodie culture expanded—and we ate through many a plate of diverse tastes. Fig was there as multiple mixed-use community hubs were planned and built—entertaining us with events and celebrations. Fig was there as retail stores filled vacant downtown buildings, season after season, offering customers goods they wanted without traveling outside city limits. You can hear the success of the City in the rhythm of the streets; see it on the friendly faces of business owners; feel it on a Saturday morning at Central Market. Fig has helped brand Lancaster as a desirable place to live, work, and play. The meaning of the name Fig is purposeful. It’s a historical and Biblical fruit that signals abundance and prosperity. The tiny, jeweltoned seeds are a bundle of possibility, unified with the purpose of creating sun-ripened, full-flavored substance. Figs come from both careful cultivation and wild chance—growing in accordance with their environment, soil, and care. They’re a symbol of peace and plenty. Fig’s foundation of positive change is also measured in service to others. Our work is produced by faith, our labor prompted by love, and our endurance inspired by hope. We seek to find common ground through collaboration and a greater good mentality that draws on collective strengths and harnesses the power of smart ideas. In due season we taste the fruits of our labor. A new season is upon us and the timing is right. Moxie House, the creator and producer of Fig, is now Fig Industries. We’re not just a part of the industry; we’re inside it. As industry insiders, we’re a powerful hybrid of professionals who are engaged in productivity—skillfully and energetically devoted. We believe that with time and persistence we can grow and produce goodness, fruitfulness, and success. Welcome to this milestone issue. Thank you for your support as we follow our journey to uplift and help revitalize the City we love— proof that you can, indeed, have your cake and eat it too. Let’s party!

fresh face | holiday 2015 | figlancaster.com life & legacies + = fig stories An exciting collaboration coming spring 2016!

Meredith Jorgensen Cooke & Joe Mitton

F R E S H FAC E : Life & Legacies “we’re a storytelling company. What we’re looking to do

is archive a life story,” says Joe Mitton. As longtime professionals and friends, journalist Meredith Jorgensen Cooke and videographer Joe Mitton have spent decades telling stories—and that’s at the heart of their newest business venture. Life & Legacies is a visual storytelling business where clients are interviewed telling their life stories and are then given a way to archive and share it with friends, family, and the community. The original idea was born from Meredith’s personal experience with

her grandfather’s sickness. After Egon’s unexpected diagnoses, Meredith grabbed a camera, flew to Florida, and put her interviewing skills to work. The time spent learning about him served as preservation of her family’s history. After the funeral, those videos became invaluable tributes to their personal legacies and her family’s identity.

did keep their crowdfunding dollars and walked away with a turnkey business plan.

Meredith and Joe decided this idea could work as a business and participated in The Great Social Enterprise Pitch, a friendly competition facilitated by ASSETS and LCCF to promote local social enterprise ideas. Life & Legacies made it to the finals. While they didn’t win the grand prize, they

The ultimate goal for all these collected stories? Share them on a TV show called Storytellers, which would have the greatest reach and community impact. Share your story and learn more about package options at LancasterLegacies.com.

“We’ve signed our lease for 52 North Prince Street,” Joe says with excitement. “There are no other businesses like this in Lancaster. We think we serve a unique niche; and we’re really excited to be small business owners and new entrepreneurs,” Meredith adds.

Chef Matt Titter with team at Steinman Park Bar

F R E S H FAC E : The Pressroom the pressroom is experiencing

a quiet revolution. This summer, they unveiled the Park Bar at Steinman Park. Beautifully executed, it was strategically planned as the start of what was to come. The community embraced the space, enjoying Carmen and David’s ice cream, listening to live local music, and celebrating late night happy hours under strings of light. The quality of service ascended, too, as a dynamic leadership team was assembled. Chef Matt Titter is at the forefront of these amazing changes. He elevated creativity and good taste with a menu that can only be described as “Not Your Momma’s

Cooking.” He was laying the foundation for change as additions were soon made to the front and back-of-house staffs. Recent interior renovations were inspired by the restaurant’s heritage. “We still respect the name and the tradition that has been around for hundreds of years with the Steinman family, but it’s becoming more current and relevant,” says General Manager Rob Commero. “The menu was a driving force behind these changes.” The new seating in the dining room includes wide open, zone style seating: the front half of the restaurant is more family style with hightop tables and communal-friendly 26 – 28 west king street

seating. Copper-covered lighting accents horseshoe-shaped leather booths, adding texture to the brick red, grays, and wood browns found throughout the new decor. “At the end of the day, we are here to enhance your experience. I don’t want you to come here just for my food, I want you to come here because it’s an awesome place to be,” Titter says with a gleam in his eyes. Some of the greatest and most powerful revolutions begin quietly. Dine at The Pressroom and see and taste the difference.

The team at their new location at North Prince & West Orange Streets

F R E S H FAC E : Rice & Noodles rice & noodles, lancaster’s choice for simple Vietnamese cuisine,

will soon open a second location at the corner of North Prince and West Orange Streets. Their team has proudly served the Lancaster community for nine years and owners Alys Truong, Bernard Truong, Vy Banh, Ninh Banh, and Khoa Cao are so happy to be expanding their trusted (and delicious!) brand. The restaurant’s atmosphere will be relaxing and inviting—similar to the Lititz Pike location. It will have a light and fresh look. There will be seating for thirty and

devotees can expect to find favorites like fresh spring rolls and refreshing vermicelli noodle salad bowls. “We’re going to have a large menu selection; it’s going to be smaller than the Lititz Pike location, but it’s still going to be a really good variety,” Vy says. Adding a second location was a natural expansion of the success and support Rice & Noodles has experienced— thanks to their kind service and family recipes. Alys shares that not a single recipe is written down; they have all been memorized. Those delicious

and time-tested recipes are on their third generation—having come from their grandfather’s recipes and mom’s creations for more than thirty years of restaurant expertise. “We’re excited to be a part of the downtown family,” Bernard says with a smile. becoming their best selves,” says Founding Owner of Evolution Power Yoga, Lisa Taylor—an idea directly in line with their mission statement to lead people into their greatest possibility. Evolution Power Yoga is moving from the Champion Forge location to the brand-new 4,000-square-foot space at College Row. This move is the next step of fine-tuning and updating the staff as well as positioning the studio to expand programs and offerings unique to Lancaster, such as the 500-hour level teacher training.

The larger space not only affords the opportunity for more parking, Downward Doggie club for kids, more bathrooms and showers, but it really showcases Evolution’s potential to do more— for students, teachers, and the community at-large. “We’ve got some things up our sleeves in terms of future offerings, locations, ways to expand what we do into the world,” Lisa says. In fact, Evolution live streams all their classes from the Lancaster studio to more than 70 countries. Students can connect to Evolution live from home or participate in a recorded

class through the website and YouTube. Operational Owner Julie Mathers, creator of the Love Your Selfie, No Edits series, is excited for connections the new space will bring. “My hope is that this studio becomes a place for people to feel the way I do—like it is a part of their lives and that the studio feels like a second home,” she says. John & Kelly Dantinne, proprietors & visionaries

F R E S H F AC E : E x c e l s i o r the magnificent 35,500square-foot complex that

includes several buildings built between 1852 and 1873 by brewer businessman John A. Sprenger will soon be restored in all her glory! Excelsior, or the Grande Dame of King Street, sat vacant for nearly 38 years until the spring of 2015 when proprietors John and Kelly Dantinne created a viable business strategy to fund its development and restoration. The Excelsior building will finally emerge from her slumber as downtown Lancaster’s premier event venue in early 2016. “The space itself is very unique. It has an atmosphere of sophisticated urban

elegance,” Kelly says. Historic hallmarks include original tin ceilings, abundant elongated windows, a sweeping grand staircase and the stunning Second French Empire façade. One rare beauty mark is the catacombs—the barrel vaulted stone chambers at the base of the Sprenger Brewery building. There are seven indoor and outdoor spaces in total. “We would really like to see the space for a multi-use purpose and rent it at an affordable price. Our goal is to have all types of people use and enjoy Excelsior for various events,” John says. Those who use the space for galas, weddings, corporate functions, and parties will find its central location to 125 east king street

everything downtown Lancaster already offers as a bonus—with parking, lodging, shopping, and dining nearby. Long-term environmental sustainability is paramount. Three green spaces and plans for solar panels are already in the works. Everything that can be reused and salvaged will be. Decks and stairs are made from the timbers coming out of the building—beautiful large pieces of cherry floors. Salvaged tin from non-historical areas will be repurposed into mirror frames and fronts of mobile bars. Now booking for 2016 and 2017! Take your next event to a higher level and beyond expectations at Excelsior. Learn more at excelsiorlancaster.com.

FROM LOCAL ROOTS Rich Ruoff loves live local music. In 1985, he opened a small Lancaster nightclub called the Chameleon Club. Twenty years later, and a second location larger, he’d staged 3,700 shows and brought a million people through the doors. In February of 2014 he introduced a festival of music called Lancaster Roots & Blues. Centered around great bands, live music, and the local Lancaster experience, Rich plans to expand the festival to three full days across twelve stages. What does Roots & Blues mean? When you hear it, you'll get it!

I’ve gone to Popovsky for two years and I take private voice lessons, acting, and dance. My favorite is voice—and I’ve taken that the longest. I love Popovsky and the staff there is uplifting and you can count on them to be professional and friendly; it feels like family. Give it a chance if you’re thinking about it! a recipe for holiday fun First, gather your ingredients: • Tiny Tim, now a grown man with children of his own • Two Eccentric Sisters—one bold, one befuddled • A time-traveling Christmas Spirit • An ornery Uncle Scrooge back from the grave Stir in one Crazy Cook, a bit of Fezziwig, and a pinch of St. Nicholas. Combine all in President James Buchanan’s Wheatland. Sprinkle with rhymes and riddles, stuff and nonsense, song and dance. And serve with four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie!

Great thanks to all the local magazines and radio stations everywhere that have put us in touch with the people of the world. These outlets bring us to the people who wake up in the morning and turn the radio on to hear what’s happening in their communities. They connect us to the people who turn the radio on to hear something different, new, maybe local. They support us and we are thankful.

the districts: Great! The first time we were played on WXPN we were driving, knowing we'd be played sometime within the local hour that night, and when it came on we bumped it and raised the roof. It was an awesome night. But yeah, WXPN and Fig have been great to us and countless other local artists.

We're woking on some new stuff in the midst of touring, so trying to get our heads in the mode for working on a new record. fig: What do you love most about Lancaster? the districts: That's hard, but we'd have to say nature. We've been living in Philadelphia for a few years now and have realized that we've kind of taken our hometown surroundings for granted; it's a beautiful place!

THE PENNSYLVANIA GUILD OF CRAFTSMEN

MIMI SHAPIRO

Get mugged this holiday season by The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen! Enjoy a fun, one-day event where the Guild will visit four local coffee shops (Rachel’s Cafe & Creperie, Mean Cup, Commonwealth on Queen, and Prince Street Cafe) and give away handmade mugs to patrons—celebrating local businesses and local art. Learn more at pacrafts.org/get-mugged.

As an artist, Mimi likes working with children because they are all natural artists and filled with ideas. Murals are painted quilts and divided into squares. For her project, Mimi collages some of the artwork of students with whom she has worked. “It's wonderful to be able to do all the things that I love, sharing the creative spirit with other children,” she says. The finished painting will be on display for the whole Lancaster community.

building character is where lancaster goes for a treasure hunt. The downtown space is packed with all things homemade, recycled, salvaged, and uniquely displayed. At its center is owner Marty Hulse, who directs the ins and outs of inventory and makes sure there is always something to catch the eye.

But when space gets tight and items need to move, Marty and his team turn to Lancaster Habitat ReStore, where they donate their overflow of furniture and home materials, assuring these pieces will have the chance for a happy second life on ReStore’s retail floor. What’s more, BUiLDiNG CHARACTER is diverting waste from landfills. The more great stuff Lancaster Habitat ReStore sells, the more great people Habitat can help. Donate your furniture, building materials, and appliances…and give the gift of a second chance.

WILLIAMS FORREST PREMIUM TECHNOLOGY PRODUCTS & SERVICES WWW.WILLIAMSFORREST.COM/FIG

authentic | holiday 2015 | figlancaster.com authentic. true. lancaster.

David Barr, Owner of Williams Forrest

AU T H E N T I C : David Barr welcome to the world of Williams Forrest—a place teeming with ideas and intricacies. Behind nondescript orange doors you’ll discover a place where tech and skate collide, a space where you’ll get more respect by doing rather than talking. Williams Forrest, founded by David Barr, is a digital solutions agency that provides services for consumer facing digital technology—creating premium and sustainable solutions for web, mobile, and social channels. Visit the website and you’ll find a simple choice: Work Hard or Play Hard. Both light up the brain, but the user decides whether to engage the top or the bottom brain.

“People want to work for a company that has ideals and has a culture and stands for something and is genuine in what they do and has passion for it,” he says. The Williams Forrest culture is real—and organic. It’s a mixture of Pac Man and Ping-Pong, coding and mathematics, human understanding and social behavior. Barr’s office includes an intimidating fourmonitor display—tempered slightly by his daughter’s Hello Kitty coloring taped to a shelf behind his workstation. With nearly 500 skate decks from the 80s, one of the world’s largest, it’s understood that his collection is meaningful and serves as inspiration for a culture that values hard work, ingenuity, and persistence—and a touch of serendipity.

“It’s all about relationships,” he surmises. And Williams Forrest has cultivated strong ones with big names like American Express, BMW, Hewlett-Packard, General Electric, Volvo, and Puma. With an office in Soho and a home base in Lancaster, the agency is skilled enough to be in any major city in the U.S., as evidenced by their prestigious invitation to SoDA Academy Learning Conference at Pratt in Brooklyn in October. “Given the choice, people would choose Play Hard without a doubt—which is why we try to make work like play,” he says with a laugh. Learn more and explore their world at williams-forrest.com.

Milagro House has been a refuge of strength, encouragement, and support for homeless mothers and their children since 1998 by providing them with life-changing opportunities.

The mission of A Week Away is to coordinate and finance respites for individuals and their loved ones who are dealing with a life-threatening illness. We take care of everything from travel expenses to medical care to lost wages.

The Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic provides comprehensive treatment to children with cleft lip and palate from birth to college. Whether we first meet a family at a pre-natal consultation, in a hospital or at the Clinic, we recognize that each child’s journey through care is unique. Treatment of cleft issues is never easy, quick, or cheap and with our commitment to care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay wider community support is always necessary. cleftclinic.org

Thank you to the Lancaster Community for supporting our mission and giving our wonderful mothers the opportunity to further their education and break the cycles of dependency for themselves and their children. Together we can—one family at a time! EXTRAGIVE 2015: November 20! milagrohouse.org

The burden of battling a life-altering diagnosis does not fall solely on the shoulders of the patient, but on the caregivers and loved ones as well. LIVING YO U R BEST LIFE Dr. Pawel Ochalski

lancaster neuroscience & spine associates is proud

to announce the arrival of Dr. Pawel Ochalski. He’s dedicated to providing comprehensive, integrated nonsurgical and surgical care for disease or injury affecting the brain and spine. Dr. Ochalski worked at WellSpan Neurosurgery, in York, prior to coming to Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates. He brings to the table neurosurgical oncology and complex spine services that are not typically offered in a community setting. “What we’re able to do here is bring high quality neurosurgery to the community and keep it in the community by

working with the health systems in the area,” he explains. What Dr. Ochalski likes most about Lancaster NeuroScience is that it’s an independent, physician-led, patient-centered practice. “This is a completely unique place,” he adds. “I’m drawn to it and inspired by how thriving the energy is here within the practice and in this community.” In his downtime, he gardens with his wife, a fertility specialist who works in both Lancaster and York, and spends time with his three sons. He enjoys digging in the dirt and working his ten acres of land. “I’m also inspired by the ability of the farming community

here to make things happen out of raw materials,” he says, drawing the parallel with neurosurgery and the truly amazing outcomes and impacts on patients. “You can argue this point, but truth be told, what makes us human is the brain and the nervous system. Even though a majority of the work we do is on the spine, losing any neurological function is a big deal and takes away part of our humanity. So really, we’re very much in tune with what makes us human—and we’re preserving that,” he says. Learn more about Dr. Ochalski at lancasterneuroscience.com.

Thrills have no odometer. Few things in life stay amazing – as amazing the thousandth time as they were the first. A Porsche is one of them. A base model with a 3.4-liter flat-six engine. A 0-60mph time of just 4.4 seconds with PDK, and a top track speed of 178mph. The 911 Carrera surpasses expectations every day. It’s a visceral, sporty driving experience that you can expect across all models. Which is why for Porsche owners, there is no substitute.

The 911 Carrera. Forever amazing.

Reasons to Celebrate Willow Valley Communities raises a glass to celebrate Fig’s 10th anniversary, as we proudly celebrate our own milestone—the 1st anniversary of Local Table, our newest culinary offering. This casually sophisticated restaurant features innovative, seasonallyinspired and locally sourced cuisine as well as top-shelf spirits, craft beers on tap, and an eclectic wine list. At the center of this vibrant venue, located at The Clubhouse at Willow Valley, are some local luminaries of the Lancaster restaurant scene making the magic happen. Chris Trendler, a certified sommelier leads the team, which includes Chef Rolando Anoceto and Gorden Drake as lead bartender. Warm, welcoming, attentive service, the hallmark of the culinary journey at Willow Valley Communities, is beautifully expressed at Local Table. So here’s to the Local Table team and all those who, through their patronage, have made it a wonderful first year! 866.986.6488 | Lancaster, PA | WillowValleyCommunities.org | LifeLivedForward.org
