Life Is Good... and Getting Better

Make Way for the Merry West Chester is a special place,

but never more so than during the holidays. As snowflakes swirl and dance from the sky, our home sweet home takes on a shimmering quality under its dusting of snow. With thrilling anticipation as the curtain is raised on this most magical season, we catch our collective breath as we gaze upon the quaintly familiar streets of West Chester, now festooned with greenery and lights. Like waking to a real-life dream, we are blessed to have this town as the backdrop of our everyday lives. And it’s at this time of year, in particular, that everything comes into a kind of twinkling focus—when we see with fresh eyes the beauty all around us.

The local shops and boutiques, the restaurants and eateries, the music, the art —all of it is shared through our talented and inspiring friends and neighbors, the people we hold near and dear. Together, we all create and support this beautiful place with its grace and elegance, fun and whimsy, charm and tradition—all the things that make it so uniquely West Chester.

And as we celebrate the wonder of the season, the team at Fig® thanks you for a magical first year in West Chester. We look forward to celebrating many more with you.

Give Gracefully: shop locally this season for everyone on your list.

Giving Back todd marcocci

WHEN TODD MARCOCCI WAS A YOUNG BOY, he used to put on backyard parades with his cousins, complete with fireworks, marching, and music. These days, Todd produces parades that are a bit bigger and more spectacular—but they are still launched with just as much heart.

Through his company, Under the Sun Productions, Todd and project manager Amy Walp produce events that are recognized as some of the best in the nation—the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, the National Independence Day Parade, and the National Cherry Blossom Parade, just to name a few. As a long-time resident of West Chester, Todd’s hometown pride inspired him to share his talents as a holiday gift to the community. Focusing first on revitalizing West Chester’s Christmas Tree in 2005, Todd’s attention then turned to the parade. In 2006, Under the Sun Productions began producing the parade on a purely volunteer basis—and has been doing so ever since. Today, under Todd’s direction, the MARS Drinks Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade has grown to impressive proportions, all while retaining its hometown charms. Over the past five years, attendance at the local event has skyrocketed from about 5,000 spectators to 30,000. The parade has even garnered national acclaim, with USA Today listing it in 2009 as one of the Top 10 Holiday Events in the country. Never seeking recognition or payment for Under the Sun’s estimated 2,000 hours of volunteer work each year, Todd says, “Our intent from the beginning was to give this as a gift to the community.” Amy agrees, saying, “We get a lot of joy from seeing the kids, rows and rows deep, watching the parade go by. The smiles on their faces make it all worth it.” For generously giving back to their community, Todd and Amy received the Volunteers of the Year Award for 2012.

“Truly, without Todd’s immense talent and involvement, this parade would not be what it is today. We thank our stars for Todd wanting to give back to the community in this way.” Mark Yoder, President of the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce

• WHERE JOY COMES IN SMALL PACKAGES. Ask anyone who has become a parent. No words can accurately describe the feeling of holding your child for the first time. The obstetricians, labor and delivery, and maternity nurses at The Chester County Hospital understand the miracle of birth well—as do the clinicians in the Hospital’s NICU. They help welcome the more than 2,600 babies born there each year. Their perspective on the importance of the care they provide speaks volumes about their dedication. “Delivering a baby is a life-changing event. Being part of the experience as a clinician is a privilege,” comments Frances E. Doyle, RN, MSN, CNML, Director, Maternal Child Services. “And our CHOP connection is a critical part of the services we offer for women who deliver here,” adds Susan Cacciavillano, RNC,NIC, Clinical Manager, NICU. The Chester County Hospital partners with The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to bring the expertise of a world leader in neonatal and pediatric medicine to West Chester. The Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery—the highest level available in Chester County—is operated as part of the CHOP Newborn Care program. Neonatologists work together with the Hospital’s perinatologists, obstetricians, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, specially trained nurses, and others to deliver the highest level of care to newborns around the clock. Some babies stay just hours and others stay for days—particularly if they are born early and require observation or treatment due to complications. At The Chester County Hospital, the goal is to prepare mothers to deliver healthy babies. “We are prepared for all emergency circumstances in the event of a high-risk delivery,” emphasizes Jennifer Cohen, MD, Neonatologist. “And we focus on providing the best comprehensive care starting from birth, especially for our most high-risk patients and mothers.” The maternal-fetal medicine program is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania Health System’s Department of Ob/Gyn, bringing Penn specialists to prospective parents in Chester County. Above all, the maternity staff places an importance on familycenteredness. Keeping the environment welcoming and offering ways to bring families together to celebrate the birth of a new member of the family is more than a goal—it’s a promise.

bringing the arts

Together

At Fig®, we envision a different kind of publication— one that energizes a thriving, sustainable local economy. We believe in the power of creative thinking to transform a community. For us this means finding ways to support non-profit organizations that foster creativity and educate people about the power of innovation as foundations for a vibrant town. We believe that awareness of opportunities helps people to make informed personal choices or to find the encouragement they need to make a difference.

We are currently looking for our 2013 Fig Social Mission Partner.

AS BOROUGH COUNCIL PRESIDENT and local boutique owner Holly Brown tells it, the streets of downtown West Chester once had all the charms of an office park.

Back in the day, when people would ask for a good place to eat lunch on a Saturday, there was maybe one restaurant worth recommending. “Today, there are about 20,” says Holly.

Downtown West Chester’s amazing transformation from an area where the last person leaving each night would turn off the lights to a bustling, lively community with restaurants, boutiques, and specialty shops did not occur by happenstance. Instead, it took two decades of visionary work from a core group of dedicated citizens like Holly Brown to make this inspiring revitalization possible. Knowing early on that West Chester was a “hidden gem” with the perfect walkable layout, these citizen volunteers began putting their long-range vision into action.

The Authentic holly brown

Sharing her time and talents for over 20 years with the town she loves, Holly poured herself into learning all she could about downtown revitalization. “You need a continuous flow of retail, or else it is very hard to revitalize,” explains Holly. “Retail, restaurants, and residential: these are the cornerstones of a thriving downtown.”

The owner of Kaly—a women’s clothing and accessories boutique—Holly jumped at the chance to buy a building at 37 West Gay Street when a law office there closed its doors. Recognizing it as the ultimate perfect spot for her business, Holly restored its façade from an office entryway to the original retail exterior. As Kaly celebrates its 25th anniversary, Holly notes, “Over the years, our shoppers have become our friends. We’ve watched families growing up: babies being born, children becoming adults, and new generations coming to the store.” Serving on the borough council since 2006 and as council president since 2010, Holly has not only been a leader in the business community but has also given her time and energy through local government. With a true downtown now in the heart of West Chester, countless more generations can enjoy the vibrant community that visionaries like Holly Brown helped bring back to life.

“ R etail, restaurants, & residential: these are the cornerstones of a thriving downtown.”

Fresh Face MAKEUP SKIN HAIR EMILY ALICE, WEST CHESTER’S NEWEST BEAUTY SPOT, isn’t your typical salon. With a keen awareness of each individual client’s needs, owner Emily Person offers an extensive selection of products. In addition to many natural and organic solutions, Emily Alice also carries gluten-, paba-, paraben-, and sulfate-free shampoos and styling products for clients with allergies and sensitivities. “Many salons offer one product line for all customers. At Emily Alice we carry several different product lines to meet the specific needs of each customer,” says Emily. Located in a beautiful space at 35 South High Street with a private room for wedding parties, girls’ or guys’ nights out, and special event gatherings, Emily Alice Salon is the perfect spot both for personal rejuvenation and celebrating with friends. “My dream was to create a place where everyone is welcome to come have fun, enjoy time spent on themselves, and get real advice about their hair, skin, and makeup,” says Emily. “Whether you’re alone or with a small group, we are happy to host you for a lesson on makeup application, skincare maintenance, or hair-styling techniques.” A salon where both men and women can come to look and feel their best, Emily Alice strives for the absolute highest quality in everything they do.

ERICA BROWN

WHERE ART MATTERS

Painting with encaustic, or sometimes mixed media, Erica Brown is both selftaught and largely influenced by her education at Tyler School of art. She has been involved in many group exhibitions, solo exhibitions, and has donated pieces to charity auctions. She has pieces in private collections from coast to coast. With a background in art education and art therapy, she currently resides and has her studio in West Chester. ebcbrown.com

ANNETTE ALESSI

JEFF SCHALLER

or have your business sponsored

Annette Alessi is a figurative and landscape artist greatly inspired by the Wyeths and has studied with Karl Kuerner. She has been published in the 100 Artist’s of the Brandywine Valley, exhibits locally, teaches at various art centers such as CCAA and will be having a solo exhibit at the CCAA Exton location in April 2013 for a pediatric cancer benefit.

Provocative and whimsical, Schaller propels the viewer into scenes of seemingly unrelated subjects, creating his own captivating and complex sonatas. Simultaneously, they are pop and edgy, esoteric and direct. His work can be seen in local watering holes such as Iron Hill Brewery, and galleries here and abroad.

JOHN BAKER

RHODA KAHLER

KAREN DELANEY

In both vessels and wall pieces, John designs a quiet rhythmic energy often associated with a reference to landscape and architecture. His work is inspired and informed through travel. Subtle changes within color and textures aid the viewer in always seeing something new.

A ceramic artist working in tile and sculpture of all sizes, Rhoda continues to push the envelope of how all the qualities of clay can be intuited and explored. She has recently been awarded a Guest Artist residency at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. About her work, she says, “It usually starts with a fortuitous glimpse of some random point of inspiration catching my eye, forcing me to stop and take a closer look, embracing texture, line, and emotion.”

Wonder Ball, created by Karen Delaney, is made of steel with a patina. The sculpture is nearly five feet tall and three feet wide and can be exhibited indoors or out. It is currently on exhibition at Sykes Gallery on the Millersville University campus until December 2012.
