taking flight

the holiday season in kennett square it was just one year ago that Fig® joined the Kennett Square community.

As we celebrate a year of excitement and growth, we owe many thanks to those who have been a part of this amazing beginning.

Thank you to Historic Kennett Square, who shares our passion for encouraging and enabling the businesses of Kennett Square to grow and thrive. Thank you to our partner Longwood Gardens, who has long served as a community leader and whose gracious beauty marks our countryside. Thank you to the local businesses who tirelessly devote themselves to their boutiques, restaurants, studios and offices, creating the charm and defining the personality of Kennett Square. Most of all, thank you to the people of Kennett Square, whose devotion and support for their town is unmatched. There is so much to be excited about, and more is yet to come. Every day, new businesses open their doors, bringing a new life and spirit to town. Magnolia Place will soon be Kennett’s newest addition—providing beautiful places for locals to live and a home for Victory Brewing Company, a greater Philadelphia area favorite who has chosen Kennett Square as their new home. Join us as we celebrate Kennett Square for its small-town charm and big-city passion on the pages of this issue and remember to gift local this holiday season. Later this month, visit figkennett.com to find even more gift ideas for everyone on your list in the Fig® Digital Gift Guide. We look forward to spending many more years here, encouraging small businesses, celebrating local culture and enjoying every moment of it.

authentic: “ Chester County has a heart and a soul, and it beats in Kennett Square.”

mary hutchins

thirteen years ago, when Mary Hutchins started working with Historic Kennett Square, the business district was a humble two-block area. Now State Street is the pulse of Kennett Square—a bustling downtown filled with unique storefronts, gourmet restaurants, and spirited community gatherings. And no one knows it (or says it) better than Mary, “Chester County has a heart and a soul, and it beats in Kennett Square.” Mary spends her days devoted to the growth of Kennett Square. In fact, she’s spent years dedicated to that mission. When Mary moved to the area more than 20 years ago, she began as a part-time writer for the Kennett Paper. Eventually she wordsmithed her way up to editor, until leaving in 2000 to do public relations for the borough itself. Now as executive director of Historic Kennett Square, Mary still works for the

borough she fell in love with. “I love the charm; it just doesn’t lose its charm,” Mary says with a smile. “It feels like home.” Through her work with Historic Kennett Square, Mary gets to make the borough a better home for its residents and a distinctive destination for visitors. By supporting local businesses and organizing festivals and downtown events, she spends each day championing Kennett Square. For Mary, it’s easy to find motivation to get the job done. “The community members and business owners are so dedicated, it’s easy to be passionate about what I do because it’s a reflection of what they do. I get to partner with the merchants, and community leaders like Longwood Gardens and Genesis Healthcare. We all share the same goal: to make Kennett the best it can be.” Find out more at historickennettsquare.com

fresh face:

walking into state & union,

you’re brought back to a time when bohemian spirits traveled freely in search of a deeper meaning hidden along winding roads and in shaded woods. With walls filled by American heritage brands in an urban woodland showroom, owner Doug Harris has finally found his deeper meaning in paying it forward. With the mantra “shop for good”, Doug represents brands who make their products in the USA, alongside brands with the highest standards for social and environmental responsibility. His curated collection of bags, accessories, and apparel for both men and women, includes American heritage brands such

state & union

as Pendleton Wool, Red Wing Boots, and Stormy Kromer Hats, in addition to the freshest made-in-the-USA brands such as United by Blue (known for picking up a pound of trash for each product sold). Every item in State & Union pays tribute to a historic past and sustainable future, even down to the store materials. Look at the walls and you’ll notice 200-yearold Chester County brick. Take a seat and you will be sitting on a bench made from a fallen walnut tree, brought down by a tornado 25 years ago. “There’s a renaissance of younger people wanting to get out and explore. Lifestyle trends are returning towards USA-made products, shopping for good, sustainability,

and exploring life,” Doug says with a passion that’s palpable. “State & Union is part of an overarching greater movement, dialed into the growth of the Brandywine Valley. This is what 2015 looks like in America.” State & Union honors the best of the past and the best of the future. Literally at the crossroads of State and Union streets in Historic Kennett Square, Doug’s store is at the crossroads of a budding movement— shopping for good, living for good, and being present in the moment. Stop in State & Union to shop for good with Erica Smith, Doug Harris, Dan McShane, and the ever-loveable, Blu.

talula’s picks

a sweet winter treat from fig ® foodie & restaurateur aimee olexy.

Here’s a sweet winter and holiday project, perfect for all ages: homemade chocolate truffles. You’ll need a creative palate and a willingness to make a small mess. And, just in case anyone asks, dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants that are good for the heart, body, and soul. Spending time with loved ones, conjuring a truffle-f illing unique to you and yours, and handing out the morsels as gifts add up to a holiday season that begins and ends with chocolate.

to serve:

My Personal Favorites: Fresh Roasted Coffee, Maple-Rosemary, Vanilla Beans & Sea Salt ( for my sweet little Annalee!), Earl Grey-Honey, Dad’s Hat Rye Whiskey ( for my love Charles!), Sun-Dried Spicy Peppers (all for me!), Mint Leaves & Chamomile Buds, Pumpkin Pie Spices

Pull out your vintage colored-glass plates and have fun setting them up around your entertaining space! Or take a trip to Scout & Annie to find dishes that may be old to some, but new to you. Use a lovely cake stand and elevate the truffles on plates around a party!

1 lb dark (58-65%) chocolate 1 oz local honey 1 oz soft high-fat butter 8 oz heavy cream

giving as gifts:

1. S teep your flavoring in the cream for a few hours the morning you are in truffle-making mode. 2. Heat your cream and honey up on the stove when you are ready to make truffles. 3. Strain out the flavoring. 4. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and mix together until combined. Add the softened butter and mix gently. 5. Chill for at least 2 hours.

6. With a small ice cream scoop or spoon, portion out chocolate into balls. 7. Roll truffles into cocoa powder, nuts, vanilla sugar, crushed Herr’s pretzels, or chips. Try decorating with dried Phillip’s Mushrooms, candies, corn nuts, or dip back into melted chocolate for an extra-chocolatey truffle.

Egg cartons are the perfect casing for giving your truffles as a quirky gift. Ribbon it all up for petite chocolate surprises of twelve different flavors, if you dare. This dessert could make a splendid ending to Hanukkah nights or the twelve days of Christmas. Head to the flea market to find some teacups to fill with truffles. Be sure to include a little box if your loved ones are traveling. Rummage through your collection of jam and Mason jars. Fill them with truffles and decorate with ribbons and inscriptions for a very sweet gift, inside and out.

Send or tag us in a photo using #talulastable of your creative truffles and we will pick our favorite on Thanksgiving Day and send you a $100 gift certificate to stock up on more Talula's holiday treats & cheeses.

doctor cari grew up in the Lehigh Valley, the second of four boys. After receiving both a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Lehigh University, he followed his passion for automobiles and joined the exclusive Chrysler Institute program in Detroit, where he developed new powertrain technologies and control systems, earning several patents. Yet, he possessed a strong desire to have a more direct impact on his community. He returned to school to pursue dentistry, where he could utilize his mechanical skills with more personal interaction. He returned to Pennsylvania to attend Temple University’s School of Dentistry, earning his Doctorate in Dental Medicine (DMD) and completing his orthodontic residency, including an additional M.S. in Oral Biology. While at Temple, he used his background to research ways to achieve better orthodontic results in less treatment time. But more importantly, he found a great fit for his energy and passion in his new career as an orthodontist. Dr. Cari and his wife Christie have a son and a daughter. In his free time he enjoys woodworking, renovating their early 20th century house, and pursuing automotive interests. Dr. Cari prides himself on open, easy communication with his patients, and promotes a friendly, relaxed atmosphere in the office. He truly enjoys the personal relationships he is able to make with patients and their families.

strolling state street, you might notice a new face in town, and along with that new face comes the style of Colombia in Kennett Square. Everything inside the doors of 121 West State Street is 100% Colombian, including owners Marcela and Eduardo Cruz. After moving to Kennett 16 years ago, Marcela wanted to find a way to support the underprivileged and single mothers of her home country. Three years ago, she began selling Colombianmade accessories online through MarcelaCruz.com. Designed by Marcela and crafted by the indigenous people

of North Colombia, Marcela gave underprivileged artisans an opportunity to sell their goods and earn a livable wage to support their families. But two years after establishing her successful social enterprise, Marcela was diagnosed with breast cancer and was forced to take a rest from her passion. A year later—thanks to the loving support of her husband and the grace of God—Marcela has fully recovered. She says, “After I healed, Eduardo and I thought, ‘Why don’t we start fresh and do something different?’ We came to Kennett Square for a Cinco de Mayo celebration and decided this

was where we needed to be.” Now Marcela has opened her doors, offering a glimpse into traditional Colombian style and culture. Whether you’re looking for a custom Morroa, Cana Flecha, or Wayuu bag, each item is entirely unique and handmade by the Morroa and Zenu peoples of Colombia. Slip on a pair of beautiful leather boots or try on a piece of fine jewelry and know that they each were made delicately and intricately by hand. Whichever stylish accessory you take home, know that you can make a difference in the life of a Colombian all the way from State Street.

Meet people who inspire and give back to our thriving downtown. Look for Fig® Giving Back in every issue.

giving back:

david myers is a man with more jobs than hours in the day. As a husband, father of three,

lawyer at Larmore Scarlett LLP, and board member for Historic Kennett Square and the Kennett After-School Association’s After-The-Bell, we’re left wondering when David gets any rest. But after growing up in the borough, working in the borough, and now still living in the borough, it’s only natural that David wanted to find a way to give back to the community that has given him so much. As president of the board of Historic Kennett Square, David is able to directly give back to the supportive community where he grew up. Through After-The-Bell,

david myers of after-the-bell

he shows his support for the next generation of Kennett-residents growing up in the borough and surrounding townships right now. After-The-Bell volunteers organize after-school activities for middle school students, ranging from academic studies to recreational, social, and cultural activities. Students can participate in unique activities that cater to their interests, including reading Olympics, stock market simulations, gardening, guitar for beginners, outdoor survival skills, or bass fishing—just to name a few. During their formative years, it’s important to David that our youth feel supported and encouraged. By supporting traditional values and teaching students lifelong

skills, David also hopes to inspire the next generation to eventually give back in their own way. “We’re raising the next generation of volunteers. Maybe if they see us giving back to the community, they’ll be the next as well,” David says. It’s not just about the youth for David, he also hopes to inspire his peers. “I want to show my peers that you can find time to make the community better by donating as much as you can. Whether it’s a dollar, an hour, or a day, you can make a difference.” It’s hard to imagine that Kennett Square could get any better, but if we take a cue from David, together we can make it happen. “Music is one of those difficult

fields of study that combines the emotional with the factual, the artistic with the disciplined, and the inherent with the learned. It is something that comes naturally to all of us, and I believe that with proper instruction anyone is capable of learning how to play music. Using the traditions of the past and coupling it with the music of today, the instructors at the Mattock School of Music give students the means and desire to make music an integral part of their lives.”

at the core of the The StanAb Development Company is a passionate devotion to Chester County community. The StanAb Development Company was founded in 1994 by life-long Chester County residents and entrepreneurs, Victor Abdala, Jr. and Tony Stancato. Their mission was unique and focused: repurpose and revitalize under-utilized real estate in Chester County to create a positive economic impact on the community. They have never wavered from this strategy. StanAb has been a catalyst in the transformation of West Chester. In 1998, they purchased the former Woolworth building on the corner of Gay and High Streets and brought in Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, now a much-loved anchor of the borough of West Chester. StanAb has completed more than 23 residential and commercial real estate projects in Chester County, with their latest project being The Chestnut Street Lofts, West Chester’s first lifetsyle-inspired apartment community.

Located in the most-desired neighborhood in the borough, The Chestnut Street Lofts combines sophisticated architecture typically found in metropolitan cities with practical amenities. Once an under-used laundromat, The Chestnut Street Lofts epitomizes StanAb’s expertise in re-purposing. Now, they plan to expand into Kennett Square. StanAb hopes to apply their vision and creativity to enhance culture, lifestyle, and economic opportunities for the families, businesses, and residents right here in Kennett Square.
